By Nicole Nalty

Fans of Freaky Friday, rejoice! Whether you’ve been a fan since the publication of Mary Rodger’s 1972 novel or the debut of the 1977 feature adaptation, or if you discovered the hilarious hijinks with the release of the 1995 television movie or the 2003 feature film, get ready to celebrate the story in a whole new way with a brand-new musical based on the classic story. While we eagerly await its arrival in La Jolla (join us for a performance and special post-show chat!), our friends at Disney Music are giving us a first listen at one of the songs created for the musical!

“No More Fear,” sung by Emma Hunton as Katherine, the mother, in her daughter Ellie’s body, (freaky, right?) is a pivotal moment for Katherine to inspire her daughter to be bold and move through life without fear.

James White Celebrates at Magic Kingdom—Plus More in News Briefs

By Courtney Potter

Super Bowl Hero James White Visits Walt Disney World

Can you believe it’s been a full 30 years since the first Super Bowl-winning football player celebrated his team’s victory with a trip to Disneyland or Walt Disney World Resorts? The tradition started back in 1987, just after Super Bowl XXI, and now all kinds of achievements—in sports and beyond—are memorialized with a trip to visit Mickey Mouse and his pals…

Naturally, this year is no different: James White, a New England Patriots running back and one of the heroes of Super Bowl LI this past Sunday, was honored with a colorful, celebration-filled parade on Monday down Main Street, U.S.A. at Magic Kingdom Park! Park guests and NFL fans alike lined the street as James smiled and waved from a float he shared with Mickey, Minnie, and other Disney characters. After all that Main Street, U.S.A. fanfare, James posed for photos and even enjoyed some fun time in the park—including a trip on the popular Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.

Congrats to James and his teammates!

New Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Teaser Trailer

If you happened to be watching the “Big Game” this past Sunday (and eating copious amounts of delicious snack foods, because that’s clearly part of the fun), you may have noticed there were several very cool, brand-new teaser trailers (from Disney and Marvel) that premiered during the broadcast. Case in point: An extended first look at Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2! (If you missed it the first time ‘round, check it out above.)

Our favorite ragtag team of vagabond heroes—Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), Baby Groot (Vin Diesel), and Drax (Dave Bautista)—is back and better than ever… and they’re joined by Yondu (Michael Rooker) and Nebula (Karen Gillan), as they continue to hurtle around the universe—this time trying to unlock the mystery of Star-Lord’s parentage.

Ready to go “running in the shadows” with the Guardians? You’ll have to wait til May 5… but if this teaser is any indication, it’ll be so worth it.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Extended Trailer Debuts

Honestly, Sunday’s game was an embarrassment of cinematic riches—besides the Guardians sneak, we also caught a glimpse of the next installment in the Pirates adventure… Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tale No Tales. In case you had to refill your chips and guac during this particular commercial break, take a gander at the trailer, above.

Johnny Depp returns as everyone’s favorite antihero, Captain Jack Sparrow—and as per usual, the good cap’n is in a heap of trouble… a cadre of deadly ghost sailors (led by the terrifying Captain Salazar, played by Javier Bardem) have escaped from the Devil’s Triangle, and they’re bent on killing every pirate at sea—especially Jack! His only hope of survival lies in the fabled Trident of Poseidon, but to find it he must forge an uneasy partnership with Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario), a brilliant and beautiful astronomer, and Henry (Brenton Thwaites), a headstrong young sailor in the Royal Navy. Ultimately, Captain Jack must reverse his string of ill fortune and face down one of the most formidable foes he’s ever encountered.

The fifth film in the franchise also stars Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa, Golshifteh Farahani (Body of Lies) as sea-witch Shansa, and, yes—Orlando Bloom as Will Turner. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales sails into theaters on May 26!

Cloak and Dagger

Freeform and Marvel Announce Cast for New Series Cloak & Dagger

Freeform is ready to enter the Marvel Universe in a big way with Cloak & Dagger, a live-action series based on two beloved Marvel comic book characters. Former Disney Channel star and Hollywood Records recording artist Olivia Holt will portray Tandy Bowen, a once-privileged little girl who watched as her family was destroyed by a disastrous storm that uprooted her life. Now in her late teens, an unexpected encounter with a boy named Tyrone Johnson sparks a life-changing event. Aubrey Joseph (Run All Night, The Night Of) will play Tyrone, who, as a young man wanted nothing more than to prove he was fearless… but when everything he held close was taken away, life taught him to be afraid. Now older and more sheltered, Tyrone closes himself off—until he meets a girl named Tandy, and his life changes forever.

Additional cast for Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger will be announced at a later date, so stay tuned for more info on the decidedly intriguing show as it becomes available.

Say it ain’t so!

Inside the new Tomorrowland-themed exhibit at the Walt Disney Studios

By Justin Arthur, Archivist, Walt Disney Archives

With the beginning of a new year comes a brand-new exhibit at the Walt Disney Archives. Inspired by one of the original thematic lands of Disneyland, the Archives’ Reading Room has been refreshed to celebrate Tomorrowland.

From Man in Space to the Millennium Falcon, The Walt Disney Company has long been inspired by stories of science fact and fiction. Tomorrowland celebrated this optimistic future, and continues to drive innovative storytelling at The Walt Disney Company today.

WDA Tomorrowland-themed exhibit

The Kem Weber-designed animator’s desk display has been dialed back to the mid-1950s, reminiscent of Ward Kimball’s desk while he was directing space exploration television shows like Man in Space, Man and the Moon, and Mars and Beyond. Not only were these programs influential in fueling American pop culture’s obsession with anything “Space Age,” but Man in Space, in particular, was shown by President Eisenhower to top brass at the Pentagon, becoming instrumental in pushing the space program forward. An original astronaut navigator costume used in the filming of 1955’s Man and the Moon is also displayed for the first time.

WDA Tomorrowland-themed exhibit

Around the room, visitors will now find props, attraction posters, and signs from Disney theme parks, including EPCOT Center’s Horizons, Captain EO, Star Tours, and even an original Rocket Jets sign from Disneyland. Additionally, robots, spacecraft, and artwork representing films from The Black Hole to TRON: Legacy are presented, along with some relics of Disney’s Audio-Animatronics® history. In the merchandise case, favorite products inspired by Walt Disney’s first sci-fi epic, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, sit alongside souvenirs from the early days of Epcot, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year.

Employees of The Walt Disney Company may visit the Walt Disney Archives during regular weekday hours, and D23 Gold and Gold Family Members can visit the Archives exclusively through The Official Walt Disney Studios Tour—Presented by D23.

A Disney Fan’s Dream: This Author Has a Backstage Pass to Disney Parks

By Beth Deitchman

“Once upon a time…” So many of the best Disney stories begin with those four words, and Ridley Pearson’s amazing Disney story is no different.

Ridley Pearson

In Pearson’s case, “once upon a time” was about 15 years ago, when the wildly successful suspense novelist—who was writing books for a Disney-owned publishing imprint—took his inaugural trip to a Disney park with his family. Leaving the Magic Kingdom at the end of an unforgettable first day, Pearson had what he refers to as his own “Toy Story” moment.

“I stopped at the turnstiles and realized that none of the Disney characters were leaving the park,” Pearson tells D23. “My ever-imaginative mind just said, ‘What are they doing for the next 12 hours while we sleep and reboot to come back here in the morning and start all over again?’”

The question remained in Pearson’s mind after he returned home, and when he telephoned Wendy Lefkon, the Disney Book Group’s editorial director, to express his thanks for a wonderful trip, the conversation took an unexpected turn—though not surprising, given Pearson’s stellar catalog and the dedication that leads him to write, by his estimation, “about two and a half books a year.” Lefkon asked Pearson if he’d ever considered writing one of the thrillers he writes so well, but setting it inside a Disney theme park and gearing it toward a young audience.

The Return Book Three Disney at Last

Eight Kingdom Keepers novels and two trilogies later—The Return, a sequel to Kingdom Keepers, concludes with the March 28 release of The Return: Disney at Last; while a brand-new trilogy set at Epcot is currently underway—Pearson has become something of a Disney expert, and as devoted a Disney fan as his readers. When he embarks upon writing any of his books, Pearson explains, he typically immerses himself in weeks of on-location research. In the case of his novels set within the worlds of Disney, he’s been granted unprecedented access to Disney parks, Disney Cruise Line, and even the Walt Disney Archives.

Pearson has stood, virtually alone, inside most Disney parks after closing, taking in the detail and marveling at how the atmosphere changes once the guests leave at the end of the day. “It feels like a ghost town, because it’s so beautiful—even with hardly any lights on—and it’s so dramatic,” he said, adding, “It’s like this perfect place with no people, and it’s a little eerie. It really fit what I wanted to do in the books.” The author has enjoyed guided walkthroughs of attractions, accompanied by Imagineers, and he’s been allowed to go on rides—sometimes 10, 11 or 12 times in a row, he says—before a park opens and he’s able to watch the park “wake up.”

The Return Book Two Legacy of Secrets

Some readers have assumed that Pearson’s behind-the-scenes experiences must create “spoilers” for him, but that’s not the case. “For some reason with Disney, seeing behind the scenes and seeing backstage and getting all of the info only makes it all the more special and exciting,” he professes. An insider’s tour of Haunted Mansion—with the lights on—let him to conclude, “That ride is even more scary when the lights are on, because it’s such a dark ride you don’t see everything that’s actually in there. When you’re in there with the lights on and nobody’s in there, it’s really creepy.”

The Return Book One Disney Lands

Many of the details and secrets Pearson is privy to make their way into his novels, and sometimes the Disney insiders who advise him find their way onto the page, as well. Disney Legend Marty Sklar has appeared in one of the Kingdom Keepers novels, as have retired Imagineer Joe Garlington and current Imagineer Alex Wright, to name just a few. The Kingdom Keepers’ mentor, Wayne, Pearson reveals, is based upon a longtime Splash Mountain ride operator with the same name, who retired in 2016 after 35 years with Disney. “He knew everything about Walt Disney World. He had met Walt Disney once as a young man,” Pearson mentions, and he notes that young guests would light up with excitement upon see the name “Wayne” on the cast member’s badge.

Sleeping Beauty book prop

The Return trilogy is set around the opening of Disneyland park in 1955, and Pearson relied heavily on the Walt Disney Archives in Burbank to help him go back in time. He describes a “heart-stopping moment,” when [Walt Disney Archives Director] Becky Cline allowed him to study an iconic prop. “They knew I had focused my series around Fantasia and Maleficent, and therefore around that whole era of movies,” he explains. “They brought out this box—I wasn’t even allowed to touch it—and put on cotton gloves, opened it up, and sitting in front of me was the shooting copy of the book in Sleeping Beauty, exactly as you would see it in the movie. Things like that just take your breath away.”

As much as Pearson attributes the success of his novels to his exhaustive research, he stresses that it’s the unlimited power of imagination that has made him the writer that he is today—the same power that drove Walt from the earliest days. “One of the things I sign in my books sometimes is just the word ‘believe,’” he says. “If we’re just willing to believe in the things that we believe in, to dream the big dream that Walt Disney spoke of so eloquently, it gives us such rich, amazing lives.”

Shadowing Disney: 10 Shadows for Groundhog’s Day

By Jim Fanning

Looking to see your shadow today? Or do you leave that to Punxsutawney Phil, the celebrated groundhog who retreats back to bed for six more weeks of winter if he sees his shadow but promises an early spring if he doesn’t. Shadows have been part of Disney animation almost from the start, for according to master animators and Disney Legends Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, “They anchored the figure to the ground. Without some kind of contact with the background, the characters seemed to float around, walking on air, no matter how much weight had been animated into their movements.” Shadows are often overlooked but never on Groundhog’s Day so here are 10 shady ways Disney has used shadows to brighten your February 2 (or any day).

Huntsman shadow in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

1. Snow White and Several Shadows
Many innovative animation techniques were developed for Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), shadows among them. Walt wanted the cinematic possibilities the creative use of shadows opened to him for his first animated feature, so his layout and special effects experts searched for ways to both create and utilize shadows. Disney Legend Ken Anderson constructed a detailed scale model of the Dwarfs’ cottage, and artists cut out shadow-casting paper figures and placed them within the model house for them to study, especially as light sources were shifted for different effects. A little-remembered device, called the Shadowgraph, was invented (but only briefly used) to simulate realistic shadows of characters on irregularly shaped backgrounds. Most important, after years of using first black and then transparent paint, a more realistic shadow was rendered by double exposing the film of an animated shadow. This allowed the filmmakers to use shadows to powerful effect as in the dramatic scene where the Huntsman attempts to stab Snow White and she sees his menacing shadow looming over her, or when the Evil Queen’s disguise as the Old Hag is first seen only in shadow on the stone walls of her dungeon laboratory’s wall. And when the Old Hag makes her appearance at the window of the Dwarfs’ cottage, it’s the darkness of her sinister shadow that fills the screen and makes her bone-chilling presence known before the visage of this villain supreme is even revealed. Walt and his artists also used shadows to charming effect, as in shadows cast by the Seven Dwarfs on the mountainside as they march home from the diamond mine.

Pinocchio shapeshifting shadow

2. Writhing is on the Wall
As with its predecessor, Pinocchio (1940) amps up the scary through the masterful application of shadows. The sinister side of the seemingly carefree world of Pleasure Island is divulged when the innocent puppet’s bad companion, Lampwick, is transformed into a donkey. What at first seems to be a joke is anything but as Pinocchio watches in horror as his naughty playmate turns from boy into braying jackass. The climax of this terrifying transformation, one of the most horrifying scenes in animation or any other medium for that matter, is shown in shadows on the pool hall wall.

Peter Pan shadows

3. A Boy and His Shadow
When Disney animation portrays a shadow as a character in its own right, as with Peter Pan’s shadow, it has a lot of personality. As Walt observed, Peter “is a boy who can do very strange things,” pointing out that “his shadow leads a merry life of its own.” In its antic attempts to elude Peter, who is trying to recapture it by chasing it through the Darling nursery, the shadow stealthily tiptoes away—and zooms across the ceiling. It can even hide with another shadow! So important was this shady character to the fantasy of Peter Pan (1953), that it was the first scene Walt put into production so that the animators established the main characters: Wendy, Tinker Bell, Peter—and not so incidentally—Peter’s shadow.

Dr. Facilier shadows

4. Some Shady Characters Celebrated in Song
Many villains have a sidekick, and in the case of Dr. Facilier in The Princess and the Frog (2009), his sinister subordinate is his own lanky shadow. A shadowy figure with mysterious, menacing charm, Dr. Facilier introduces himself—and the dark forces he’s in cahoots with—in the “Friends on the Other Side” number. As the wily witch doctor shows off his graceful moves, his shadow has some moves of its own. The shadow even acts independently of Dr. Facilier, exposing the charming conjuror’s darker side by taking the form of a snake. Later, when the not-so-good doctor must find the wayward frog prince (Prince Naveen in frog form thanks to Dr. Facilier’s deceitful voodoo), his fiendish friends grant him an army of slithering Shadow Demons, designed and animated by Alex Kupershmidt. No wonder that this shady deceiver is known as the “shadow man.”

Pecos Bill shadow

5. Blue Shadows on Pecos Bill’s Trail
Disney animation also achieved visual poetry through shadowy images and nothing was more beauteous than the “Blue Shadows on the Trail” number bookending the wild and wooly tall tale of “Pecos Bill” in Melody Time (1948). Performed with the smooth, Western-infused harmonies of Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers, the song is accompanied by striking scenes of the nighttime desert where, indeed, “the world is silhouetted against the sky.”  Animated by Disney effects expert Joshua Meador and filmed with the multiplane camera, long shadows are cast by cacti of various shapes and sizes as well as spidery tumbleweeds, all under an ultra-bright full moon. The hauntingly beautiful Western ballad is showcased on the classic Echoes of Disneyland album, as played by Dee Fisher on the electronic organ, available on iTunes.

Lady and the Tramp shadows

6. Dogfight Seen in the Shadows
The artists behind Lady and the Tramp (1955) sought the most visually compelling way to present Tramp’s fight with some bullying canines to protect Lady in a back alley. Sequence director Gerry Geronimi called for a “real knock-down, drag-out battle,” and when layout artist Tom Codrick noted “we could get a good dramatic effect by having part of the fight behind the barrels,” directing animator Woolie Reitherman suggested that they “have shadows of the dogs cast on the wall.” The effect of the fighting dogs’ shadows seen over wide-eyed Lady packs a punch in one of Walt’s gentlest animated features.

The Phantom Blot

7. The Phantom Blot Shadows Mickey
Shrouded in darkness and with a lot to hide, a shadow could make a truly sinister villain—as evidenced by the Phantom Blot. In 1939, Disney Legend Floyd Gottfredson introduced this shadow-like, night-stalking criminal into the Mickey Mouse newspaper comic strip—the story that was reprinted in the first-ever Mickey comic book, Mickey Mouse Outwits the Phantom Blot (September 1941)—about his non-stop efforts to blot out Mickey. In 1964, the first issue of the Phantom Blot comic book was published, making this shady character one of the first villains to be awarded his own comic-book title. When a somewhat modified version of the Blot appeared in the video game Epic Mickey, this baddie’s shadowy status was solidified when he was called—what else?—the Shadow Blot.

The Great Mouse Detective Sherlock Holmer shadow

8. It’s a Surprise, Sherlock
Shadows can reveal surprises as intriguing as they are delightful. Case in point: In The Great Mouse Detective (1986) Sherlock Holmes himself makes two cameos, first in silhouette against the window shade of his famed flat at 221-B Baker Street (Basil, the titular mouse detective, has his own flat in the basement of this legendary London building), and then in shadow within the flat itself. Holmes is heard conversing with Dr. Watson (also making a shadowy surprise appearance). To make the shadow even more special, the voice of Holmes is that of Basil Rathbone in a sound byte from a radio show in which the actor performed his signature role as the great Sherlock.

Mary Poppins shadow

9. A Supercalifragilistic Shadow
“I’d know that silhouette anywhere!” exclaims Bert in Mary Poppins (1964), when an unmistakable shadow falls across the pavement where he is making chalk pavement pictures. He immediately begins sketching a chalk portrait of the practically perfect person. This unique way of showing up is most appropriate, for whether it’s soaring through the air holding her umbrella or sliding up the staircase bannister, Mary Poppins must make an entrance—and when she is reunited with her old friend Bert, the unmistakable shadow of this extraordinarily magical nanny allows her to do just that.

Expedition Everest Yeti shadow

10. Seeing Shadows in Disney Theme Park Attractions
As with animation, shadows are but one tool Imagineers use in the storytelling guests experience in a Disney attraction. From the shadow of the creepy hand crossing the grandfather clock in the Haunted Mansion to the shadow of the Yeti destroying the ride track in Expedition Everest, guests may spot shadows large and small, adding layers of fun and adventure to the already elaborate attractions. In the well-remembered Disneyland® Park Audio-Animatronics® show America Sings, Mrs. Rabbit musically wondered where her “Wanderin’ Boy” was, and the silhouette of an all-too-happy hare hoisting a few outside her window gave the answer. Shadows of sword-fighting buccaneers set up the fact that the pirates have invaded the village in Pirates of the Caribbean. In the queue through Mickey’s Movie Barn, guests can hardly miss Donald and Goofy’s shadows in the projection booth (especially when the Goof playfully forms some hand shadow puppets) in Mickey’s Toontown’s Mickey’s House and Meet Mickey attraction. So keep your eyes peeled the next time you visit a Disney Park—you never know when a shadow might show up to enhance a Disney attraction, even if it isn’t Groundhog’s Day.
