Amazing New Marvel’s Inhumans Trailer Debuts at Comic-Con

Unless you were visiting some hot springs in Iceland (and if you were, we’re jealous!), you probably heard about—or even attended—this past weekend’s mega-huge Comic-Con in San Diego, California. A treasure trove of amazing announcements, from all parts of pop culture, were divulged at various Comic-Con panels… including a brand-new trailer for ABC’s Marvel Inhumans! See why it’s one of the most talked-about new shows of the 2017–18 season in the clip, above.

Marvel’s Inhumans examines the never-before-told story of Black Bolt, the enigmatic, commanding King of the Inhumans—with a voice so powerful that the slightest whisper can destroy an entire city. After his Royal Family of Inhumans is splintered by a military coup, they barely escape to Hawaii, where they’re greeted with surprising interactions with both the lush world and the humanity around them. Now they must find a way to reunite with each other and return to their home before their way of life is destroyed forever.

ABC will premiere a super-special version of the first two episodes in IMAX theaters around the globe for two full weeks, beginning September 1… subsequently, look for the show’s broadcast premiere on Friday, September 29, from 8–10 p.m. EDT.

Darkwing Duck

Let’s Get Dangerous: Darkwing Duck Will Visit DuckTales

Speaking of Comic-Con, there was a fantastic panel on Friday, July 21, dedicated to Disney XD’s forthcoming reboot of DuckTales—featuring the cast (including David Tennant, Kate Micucci, Ben Schwartz, and Beck Bennett) and creative team. And one of the biggest pieces of news to come from said panel? That Darkwing Duck himself will be making an appearance on the series!

According to our friends at Oh My Disney, not only will “the terror that flaps in the night” show up, but so will a bunch of characters from the Disney Afternoon series of the same name.

Audiences at the panel were also privy to an exclusive two-minute-long sneak peek of the show… but lucky for you, they’ve recently uploaded it onto the world-wide interwebs! Check it out, below:

Ryan Seacrest

Ryan Seacrest Returns as Host for ABC’s American Idol

He’s been busy co-hosting ABC’s Live with Kelly and Ryan, and he’s about to get even busier: Ryan Seacrest is returning to American Idol! The award-winning host and producer was with the beloved music competition since its inception in 2002—and he’s ready to help reinvigorate the series as it moves to its new home on ABC.

“It’s genuinely hard to put into words what American Idol means to me,” Ryan recently said. “I’m so grateful for the show and all the career and life opportunities it’s allowed me to experience… To be asked to return this year, at my new home at Disney|ABC, is an honor, if not a bit surreal. I believe ABC is the perfect home for Idol, and I’ve every confidence the show’s legions of fans will love it… ”

The nationwide search for America’s next music superstar kicks off on Thursday, August 17, as the Idol Bus tour heads out to cities across the country. Check out AmericanIdol.com for more details.

Ho, Ho, Hot—It’s Christmas in July at Walt Disney World Resort!

As far as we’re concerned, it’s never too early to start feeling some yuletide cheer… and the good folks down at Walt Disney World Resort agree! They just celebrated some of the amazing new offerings debuting at the resort for the upcoming holiday season—and D23 was there (with jingle-bells on) to get the inside scoop. Read all about it here!

All-New Trailer for Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok Will Make You Wish It’s November

Yet another exciting development at last weekend’s Comic-Con was all manner of ridiculously cool news from Marvel Studios… including a brand-new trailer for Thor: Ragnarok! See Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/the Incredible Hulk—alongside Marvel newcomers Jeff Goldblum and Cate Blanchett—above.

As we catch back up with the crown prince of Asgard, he’s imprisoned on the other side of the universe (without his mighty hammer) and finds himself in a race against time to get home and to stop Ragnarok—the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization as they know it—at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela (Blanchett). Directed by Taika Waititi, Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok thunders into theaters across America on November 3.

Steamboat Willie As Told by Emoji is New and Adorable

We’re big fans of the As Told By Emoji series, and their most recent video—released to celebrate World Emoji Day on July 17—is all kinds of adorable. Steamboat Willie As Told By Emoji takes one of Disney’s earliest cartoons (and its first one with sound) and imagines what its story might look like in 2017.

Follow along—in black and white—as Mickey pilots a river steamboat, runs afoul of the boat’s real captain (that ol’ meanie Pete!), meets up with Minnie, and “plays” animals like musical instruments! And make sure to keep watching ‘til the (vivid) end.

Minnie Van

Minnie Van Service at Walt Disney World Resort

There’s a new way to get around Walt Disney World Resort, and it’s sure to add some polka-dotted fun to your day! Starting this month, a fleet of Minnie Mouse-themed vans will take guests from Disney’s Boardwalk Resort and Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club to anywhere they wish around the entire Resort. And that’s not all: Pick-ups can be arranged right from a smartphone! Soon enough, a Disney cast member will arrive and drive you to your next destination in the most Minnie-fied way possible…

Keep your eyes peeled for more info on this new point-to-point transportation service as it becomes available.

Dream Big, Princess “Projections” Video Inspires Girls and Kids

The Disney Princesses are a pretty inspirational group of role models—no matter what age you might be—so Disney launched the Dream Big, Princess campaign in 2016 to inspire girls and kids all around the world to realize their own ambitions. The Villain Kids are Dressed to Thrill in Descendants 2

By Beth Deitchman

Kara Saun is tasked with making sure that evil is always in fashion. The designer—a finalist on the first season of the hit series Project Runway, and who recently served as judge for D23 Expo’s Mousequerade costume contest—is in her dream job, creating the costumes for the Villain Kids in Disney’s Descendants and Descendants 2, premiering on Friday, July 21, in an unprecedented simulcast on ABC, Disney Channel, Disney XD, Freeform, Lifetime and Lifetime Movies at 8 p.m. EDT.

Kara Saun

D23 spoke to Saun recently about what inspires her wickedly wonderful wardrobe for the sons and daughters of Disney’s iconic villains. When she embarked upon designing the costumes for the first Descendants movie, Saun did a ton of research—including trips to Disney’s Animation Research Library to look at the original artwork from classic animated films, which she watched “over and over again.”

“I start with the heritage parents to create a color wave,” Saun says. She assigns each character a dominant color based on the heritage parent and her research. For example, so as not to mix up Harry (son of Captain Hook, played by Thomas Doherty) and Gil (son of Gaston, played by Dylan Playfair) by dressing them both in red, like their fathers, Saun clad Gil in mainly burnt orange, a hue worn by Gaston in some early artwork she was able to view.

Descendants 2

Once she’s determined the color wave, Saun shares, “I pick out little things,” such as a white feather or an abundance of hooks worn by Captain Hook in some research material she turned up. “I really do start with the parent and then add my little version of punk to it.”

DOVE CAMERON

Mal (Dove Cameron)—Daughter of Maleficent
“She went from being the girl from the Isle of the Lost to, literally, a princess overnight. It’s really fun to create all of these princess looks for Mal in colors that she normally wouldn’t wear,” says Saun, who points out that Mal’s look has evolved from 1970s punk to preppy punk to a more polished punk. Mal’s wardrobe is still edgy but with more sophistication, and Saun notes, “It really tells her story. She’s just trying to fit in.”

SOFIA CARSON

Evie (Sofia Carson)—Daughter of the Evil Queen
Since Evie is now the junior fashion designer for all of Auradon, her wardrobe has been customized, from earrings and accessories to her distressed shoes. “Everyone is wearing Evie’s clothing to the cotillion, so for Evie, every time you see her I want you to feel like she’s a designer,” Saun says.

CHINA ANN MCCLAIN

Uma (China Anne McClain)—Daughter of Ursula
“I wanted to create a whole new color wave for Uma,” Saun tells D23. “I watched all the movies over and over again, and one thing that was so striking in Ursula’s look was that very bright turquoise eyeshadow, and that is how I got Uma’s color.” Uma’s braids are intended to look like tentacles, Saun says, “So when she’s fighting and dancing and you see the fringe going and you see her braids flying in the wind, it really looks like an octopus.” Viewers might also take note of the fishnet-inspired mesh Uma wears, and the trinkets that adorn her pirate jacket and her bag. “It’s really fun because Kenny said to me, ‘I want Uma to look like you just dragged her on the bottom of the sea,’” Saun laughs.

BOOBOO STEWART

Jay (Booboo Stewart)—Son of Jafar
A natural athlete, Jay’s wardrobe in Descendants 2 reflects the growth of the character, who has now become a natural leader. Saun points out, “For him, it’s still a polished punk but it has a little athletic twist to it, with the red knit on the sleeves and the waist.”

CAMERON BOYCE

Carlos (Cameron Boyce)—Son of Cruella DeVil
Carlos is one of the more tech-minded denizens of Auradon. “He has a polished punk look, but something he would never do before is wear a lot of shirts with collars,” Saun mentions, adding that this detail added a bit of preppy style for the character, as well.

Descendants 2 Director Kenny Ortega’s Secrets to Building a Hit Disney Franchise

By Beth Deitchman

He was the “playmaker” for Disney Channel’s much-loved High School Musical trilogy, but since 2015, director/choreographer/executive producer Kenny Ortega has had his head in a different game. Today, Descendants 2 premieres on an unprecedented six channels at once—a testament to the popularity of the Disney Channel Original Movie Descendants, which introduced the offspring of some of Disney’s most evil villains and their “wicked world” of the Isle of the Lost. The Villain Kids—or VKs, as they’re known—strike a chord with viewers in much the same way that High School Musical’s Wildcats did, and they’ve made a huge impact on the bestseller list, the music charts, and at retail.

When we asked Ortega whether there’s a recipe for a successful Disney Channel franchise, he shared a few key ingredients with us. “The big answer is having the right idea, where you’re going to be able to not just attract attention, but find an audience who’s going to want to come back and watch it again and again, and be thirsty for more,” he told D23.

Kenny Ortega on set

But, Ortega stressed, characters and a compelling story are no less significant. “I think that in High School Musical and in Descendants, we have these characters who come from different backgrounds that are dynamic in terms of their difference,” he pointed out. Even though characters like Mal, Evie, Carlos, and Jay are the offspring of some of the most evil characters in Disney history, Ortega stressed, they’re still relatable, which is why he believes that Disney villains have become the new Disney heroes. “I think there’s a really big story there. It’s that no matter where we come from, no matter what we’ve done, we have the ability to make choices that can determine who we’re going to become, and the choices can impact other people around us,” Ortega detailed.

From Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens to Sofia Carson and Dove Cameron, Ortega has worked with amazing young actors at the relative start to their careers, casting them in films that have a scale that could challenge even the most veteran actors. “I always look for partners,” Ortega explained. “It’s not enough to just come in and show that you have a skill as an actor or you have a voice or good movement skills. I’m looking for a person who is going to have opinions about their character. Who is a thinker. Who is an ‘imagineer.’” He was blown away by the dedication of the young cast of the High School Musical franchise, mentioning Efron’s insistence that Ortega shouldn’t be afraid to make the cast work.

The Descendants 2 cast at rehearsals
Ortega (far right) with the Descendants 2 cast—including Cameron Boyce and Sofia Carson (center)—who he acknowledges are triple threats who have blown him away with their ability to sing, dance and act.

“And that’s how I feel about everyone on Descendants 2—the new kids and the kids who are returning. They’re not afraid to do the work—they love it. They love raising the bar on themselves. They love having breakthroughs. They love learning. And that’s what makes them great partners,” Ortega said.

Ortega was drawn to the story of the Descendants from his first reading of the original script. “I was blown away that we were talking about the descendants of these heritage characters,” Ortega recalled. “The thought of being able to play with these brand-new characters who are born out of some of the greatest characters in all of Disney, many of which I grew up with, was so exciting to me—and also really frightening. Wow, what a responsibility!” He immediately envisioned how music and dance could help tell the story, and says the story came alive on the page. “As I was reading it, I found myself on the Isle. I found myself in Auradon,” he shared. “And whenever that happens to me—whenever I leave the page and I’m in the world, I know that there’s something there for me. That was it. I got bit—real hard and real fast!”

Kenny Ortega and the Descendants 2 cast hugging

One need only spend a few moments with Ortega to see how much he’s enjoying his time in this fantastical world and, when pressed, he confessed to having a favorite sequence. “I’ve always loved pirates and I’ve always loved Peter Pan. That was part of my childhood—I don’t know how many fences I fell off or how many sticks I broke sword fighting with my neighbors,” he laughed. He was thrilled to be able to play in that world with new characters like Uma and Harry Hook, and he pointed to the sequences on the old ship on the Isle of the Lost as some of his favorites: “They hearkened back to my own childhood and the things that excited me first in my life and made me want to be a filmmaker.”

Kenny Ortega with the Descendants 2 cast
The Descendants 2 stars and creative team joined Ortega for a warm moment after a script read-through.

The VKs have got all the ways to be wicked, but fans have all the ways to watch Descendants 2 tonight. Tune in to Disney Channel, ABC, Disney XD, Freeform, Lifetime, and Lifetime Movies at 8 p.m. EDT, and then stick around on ABC for Descendants 2: ABC After-Party, airing at 10:30 p.m. EDT on ABC.

Descendants 2

Descendants 2 After-Party Coming to ABC This Friday

The mega-huge premiere of Disney’s Descendants 2 is coming up in just a few short days! (It’s so big, it’s debuting on six different networks—ABC, Disney Channel, Disney XD, Freeform, Lifetime, and Lifetime Movies—simultaneously.) And the evening’s fun won’t be ending as the movie’s credits roll… in fact, make sure to stick around on Friday, July 21, for Descendants 2: ABC After Party at 10:30 p.m. EDT on ABC.

The exclusive ABC post-movie special, filmed inside the beautiful 21 Royal at Disneyland park, will take viewers along as the stars of Descendants 2—Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, Sofia Carson, Booboo Stewart, and China Anne McClain—appear as grand marshals in Disneyland’s parade down Main Street, U.S.A., and meet fans at the film’s recent red-carpet premiere event. Plus, they’ll be joined by the movie’s director, choreographer, and executive producer, Emmy® Award winner Kenny Ortega (High School Musical), who’ll talk about the making of the film… and will open the “director’s vault” to premiere his very own behind-the-scene clips and outtakes. It’s yet another “way to be wicked,” and we cannot wait!

Marvel's Spider-Man

Marvel’s Spider-Man Announces Premiere Date and Voice Cast

One of the amazing announcements to come out of this past weekend’s Expo was during the Marvel Animation panel, and it deserves a second look… The highly anticipated new animated series Marvel’s Spider-Man will debut on Saturday, August 19 (from 7–8 a.m. EDT), on Disney XD, and on the Disney XD App and VOD (at 12:01 a.m. EDT). The one-hour premiere will introduce us to teenage Peter Parker (voice of Robbie Daymond) as he navigates New York City—and his new school, Horizon High—all while trying to hide his super powers. As Peter embraces his alter-ego and takes on villains including Vulture, Lizard, Sandman, and the infamous Doctor Octopus (aka “Doc Ock”), he watches his hero lifestyle come between his personal relationships and struggles to keep his best friend Harry Osborn (voice of Max Mittleman) from landing on the wrong side of the law. The voice cast also features Nadji Jeter, Melanie Minichino, Laura Bailey, and Ratatouille’s Patton Oswalt.

But that wasn’t the only big news from the panel: a brand-new third season of Disney XD’s Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is on the horizon, as is a new 22-minute animated special from The LEGO Group and Marvel entitled LEGO® Marvel Super Heroes—Guardians of the Galaxy: The Thanos Threat. Keep your eyes peeled for more info on all things Marvel Animation in the weeks to come.

RESULTS

Moslty 1s: You are the child of: Maleficent

As a child of Maleficent, you can’t help but find many ways to be wicked. Things that you love: behaving dramatically, dressing dramatically, and scheming dramatically. Things you don’t like: being snubbed from party invitations. You can’t help it—it’s just how you take after your mother. You may not have magical powers and you might not be able to turn into a dragon, but, like the fairy of darkness herself, you always make sure to stand up for yourself—no matter what.

Mostly 2s: You are the child of: Ursula

You may not have eight legs or live under the sea, but you take after Ursula in your cleverness and determination. You can charm anyone with your words, and you know how to play a good trick or two. Like Ursula, you know exactly what kinds of schemes you need to concoct to get what you want.

Mostly 3s: You are the child of: The Evil Queen

Magic mirror on the wall, who’s the best-looking villain kid of all? As the child of the Evil Queen, we’re betting the answer is you. While you might not be as, well, intense about your appearance as the Evil Queen is about hers, you still take pride in dressing well, and might have a camera roll full of fabulous selfies. You may find yourself giving into your competitive edge, although when it comes to facing off against pretty princesses, you’d rather prove your worth through your actions then by using poison apples—we hope…

Mostly 4s: You are the child of: Cruella De Vil

If she doesn’t scare you, no evil thing will—and she’s your mom, so we’re pretty sure you’re not scared of anything! You’re not much of an animal fan, and you’d rather recruit some humans to do your bidding in your next scheme. You enjoy fashion and the power of a good accessory, and you’re not afraid to try bold trends—like maybe multi-colored hair?

A New Frontier for Disney Vacation Club

By D23 Team

Imagine taking in a serene landscape as you relax in a rustic cabin overlooking a tranquil waterfront. Sitting by the stone fireplace, you leisurely page through a book before turning to spend quality time with friends and family, eating s’mores and sharing stories. This wilderness retreat offers the ideal place to reconnect and revel in the simple joys of nature. And the best part: you’re just around the river bend from Magic Kingdom Park. At nighttime from select spots along the waterfront, you might just catch the glowing lights of the Electrical Water Pageant on Bay Lake or views of the fireworks from Magic Kingdom Park.

Monday, July 17, marks the opening of Copper Creek Villas & Cabins at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, where the team can officially “welcome home” Disney Vacation Club Members and guests to the 14th Disney Vacation Club Resort.

Copper Creek Villas & Cabins offers one of the widest ranges of accommodations found at Walt Disney World Resort featuring 184 modern, nature-inspired vacation homes—including Deluxe Studios, one- and two-bedroom Villas, and three-bedroom Grand Villas—and 26 all-new luxurious waterfront Cascade Cabins. The Deluxe Studios offer room for up to four guests, while the larger one- and two-bedroom Villas and three-bedroom Grand Villas create a tranquil retreat for families of any size. Each Villa is designed with today’s families in mind, offering full kitchens, expanded storage space for belongings, and private patios or balconies with scenic views. As the newest chapter for Disney Vacation Club, Copper Creek Villas & Cabins will serve as an idyllic retreat for adventurers and Disney fans alike!

Since its opening in 1994, Disney’s Wilderness Lodge has transported guests to a different time and place. The evolution of the transcontinental railroad and grandeur of the Pacific Northwest are themes that tie together the three distinct Resorts: Boulder Ridge Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge (drawing inspiration from the rustic communities along the railroad in the 1800s), Disney’s Wilderness Lodge (honoring the lodges that welcomed train travelers during the 1900s) and Copper Creek Villas & Cabins (reflecting the lifestyle of the Pacific Northwest today). As the story goes, Disney’s Wilderness Lodge was home to the early settlers heading westward on the railroad. Copper Creek Villas & Cabins is inspired by the resourcefulness of those Westerners who turned remnants of an abandoned railroad into contemporary communities.

When guests experience Copper Creek Villas & Cabins, they’ll see firsthand how railroad relics—natural resources and building materials that the early settlers used—are cleverly woven into the Resort’s modern yet cozy design.

From intricate patterns to unique building materials, the attention to detail is essential to telling the Resort’s story and creating a tranquil retreat.

Copper Creek Villas & Cabins

And, in true Disney fashion, Walt Disney Imagineers found fun and playful ways to further evoke the spirit of America’s Great Northwest by including imaginative details that pay tribute to Disney heritage, stories and characters that reflect the region. Take a look at just some of the Disney details found throughout the Resort.

Copper Creek Villas & Cabins

This framed totem artwork featured in the Villas is based on the actual plans that were used for the totems found in lobby of Disney’s Wilderness Lodge.

As a tribute to Walt’s passion for locomotives, a “Fair Weather Route” pass for the Carolwood Pacific—Walt’s miniature backyard railroad—is displayed in the Villas.

Copper Creek Villas & Cabins

A framed silhouette of a moose might seem like a simple nod to the wildlife found in the Great Northwest. But in this case, a careful eye will recognize the character from the Walt Disney Animation Studios film Brother Bear (2003).

Copper Creek Villas & Cabins

As guests open a bunk-size pull-down bed in the Cascade Cabin, they’ll discover a delightful sight: an illustration of the famous Disney chipmunks, Chip and Dale.

Copper Creek Villas & Cabins

While in the kitchen-dining area of the Cascade Cabins, guests will find artfully deconstructed railroad-logo blocks that pay tribute to two notable railways in Disney history: the miniature Carolwood Pacific Railroad that once traveled through the backyard of Walt Disney’s Holmby Hills home, and another representing the Fort Wilderness Railway, which operated at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground from 1973-1980.

Copper Creek Villas & Cabins

Also in the Cabins, a shadowboxed necklace is reminiscent of the symbolic totem presented to Kenai in Brother Bear.

Copper Creek Villas & Cabins

And, of course, be sure to keep an eye out for a Hidden Mickey or two at Disney’s Copper Creek Villas & Cabins. We’d tell you where they are located, but then they wouldn’t be hidden, would they?

Copper Creek Villas & Cabins at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge—along with the new Geyser Point Bar & Grill, the reimagined Roaring Fork quick service dining location, Salon by the Springs, and Boulder Ridge Cove Pool—offers the perfect place for Disney Vacation Club Members and guests to create memories that will last a lifetime.

Disney Vacation Club

Disney Vacation Club debuted in October 1991 with a flexible, point-based model, where Members are able to choose from among a variety of vacation destinations, including a stay at any Disney Vacation Club Resort or thousands of other Resort destinations around the world. And, of course, Members also have convenient access to the newest offerings across Disney Parks, from discovering Pandora – The World of Avatar at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, to enjoying Disney Springs, a one-of-a-kind retail, dining and entertainment district in the heart of Walt Disney World Resort, to setting out on a rockin’ new adventure on Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! over at Disney California Adventure Park at Disneyland Resort.

Legends of Imagineering

Legends of Walt Disney Imagineering
There was plenty of star power in the D23 Expo Arena this afternoon when TV icon—and serious Disney fan!—John Stamos led a fascinating discussion with Disney Legends Tony Baxter, and Marty Sklar. In a wide-ranging conversation, these two legends of Imagineering revealed inside stories about the artists, designers, and technical wizards who helped bring magically to life unforgettable Disney Parks and Resorts experiences around the world.

“We hold these men and women in higher regard than we do political figures or actors,” Stamos said, kicking off this lively discussion. “They’re rock stars!”

And with that, Stamos brought Tony Baxter and Marty Sklar to the stage, where they then received a standing ovation worthy of, well, a rock star. Baxter and Sklar then discussed their collaborations with several Imagineering legends, including Richard Irvine, Harper Goff, John Hench, Claude Coats, Blaine Gibson, Bill Evans, Harriet Burns, Herb Ryman, Leota Toombs Thomas, and more. Tony Baxter said of Harper Goff, “I knew him as a genius, before I knew him as a friend. He helped create the first E-Ticket Ride—the Jungle Cruise at Disneyland—and his work on Epcot World Showcase was amazing.” Marty Sklar, recalling Herb Ryman, noted, “Who did Walt pick to create the first drawing of Disneyland? Herbie. If you visually walk through the drawing, you can see details that were in Walt’s head that didn’t show up at Disneyland until five years later.”

After their conversation, Stamos brought on the newly honored Disney Legend Wayne Jackson, who played a vital role in helping to create and install complex technology and ride systems at Disney Parks and Resorts around the world. “Marc Davis was my mentor,” Jackson said. “I remember when we were building Jungle Cruise at Walt Disney World, he would take me to the zoo and study the movements of animals.”

Walt Disney Imagineering President Bob Weis then came on stage and congratulated Jackson for his legendary career. “You did amazing work when you didn’t have CAD, 3-D printing, or even a Xerox copier!” he said. He then presented him with a special gift—a replica of Tokyo Disneyland’s Cinderella Castle—an honorary gift from Walt Disney Imagineering and the Oriental Land Company.

90 Years of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit—Disney’s First Success
Before Mickey Mouse, there was Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, The Walt Disney Studios’ first successful animated character, so it seemed only fitting to save him for the final Stage 28 panel of D23 Expo 2017. As many a Disney fan knows, the story of Oswald is the story of the creation of The Walt Disney Company. When Walt “lost” the rights to Oswald back in the 1920s, it prompted him to dream up Mickey Mouse on a napkin on the train ride back home, and the rest—as they say—is history. This year marks 90 years of Oswald, who is now back inside the Disney family, and author David Bossert celebrates this occasion with his brand-new book Oswald the Lucky Rabbit: The Search for the Lost Disney Cartoons. It’s an in-depth look at Oswald’s history and the search for his “lost films.” The book includes the story of the rejection of the first Oswald cartoon, Poor Papa, and the success of Oswald’s second film, Trolley Trouble, which Bossert showed during the panel. He also showed Africa Before Dark.

Bossert went on to say that the easiest Oswald film to find was Hungry Hobos, because he simply bought it at auction. But most of the films have not been that easy to find, especially since the films are nitrate-based and decay over time. Bossert went on to tell the surprising story that Walt didn’t actually lose the rights to Oswald, because he never really owned them; what actually happened is that he lost the contract to produce Oswald. Regardless, it was a devastating—and life-changing—blow to the young Walt. But Bossert stressed the importance of this event because had it not happened, then perhaps Walt would have never created Mickey Mouse. “We hear that Walt said to never lose sight of the fact that it all started with a mouse,’” said Bossert. “But I like to say, ‘It all started with a rabbit!’”

Alan Menken

Magic with Alan Menken
Disney Legend Alan Menken’s special one-man show, A Whole New World of Alan Menken, made Disney fans’ hearts sing this afternoon in Hall D23 at D23 Expo 2017. For 90 magical, musical minutes, he performed iconic songs including “Friend Like Me” from Aladdin, “Santa Fe” from Newsies, and “Go the Distance” from Hercules, while sharing stories behind his music and his incomparable career. Find out more about this unforgettable event here.

Zero to Hero: The Making of Hercules
Hosted by directors Ron Clements and Jon Musker, this panel celebrated 20 years of the animated classic Hercules, featuring appearances by animators Erica Goldberg and Ken Duncan. Both shared their concept art of the characters they designed, and explained how the designs changed from sketch to screen. Clements and Musker also shared some of the live-action reference footage they used in animating the Hydra sequence and an animatic for the song “Shooting Star,” which would eventually be replaced by “Go the Distance.” Finally, Tate Donovan (the voice of Hercules) and Susan Egan (the voice of Megara) joined the panel to discuss their experiences auditioning and voicing their characters. For a finale of mythic proportions, Egan wowed the crowd with a live performance of “I Won’t Say (I’m in Love)” to a standing ovation.

Charming Costumes

Inspiring Women of Imagineering
How do you become an Imagineer? And, if you’re lucky enough to become one, what makes your journey at one of the world’s most highly respected creative organizations so unique, so gratifying?

That was the inspiring theme behind Inspiring Women of Imagineering, a Stage 28 panel on Sunday introduced by D23’s Jeffrey Epstein and hosted by Kathy Mangum, senior vice president, Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI). Joining Mangum for this conversation were Andrea Lawler, ride control engineer; Charita Carter, creative producer; Jodi McLaughlin, executive producer; Wendy Anderson, executive creative director, Disney Parks Live Entertainment; Marni Burress, project management executive; Sara Thacher, WDI Research and Development; and Laura Cabo, architectural design studio executive.

“There is no one answer for how you become an Imagineer,” Mangum said. “We all have our own stories to tell.” That proved to be the case. Carter was working as an accountant at a company across the street from WDI and literally “walked across the street” to join WDI. Andrea, who majored in Screenwriting at USC (and has an optioned script to her credit), interned at WDI in robotic engineering and sought to fuse her math skills with her storytelling side—and now works in ride engineering.

No matter what different avenues brought them to WDI—and what different professional paths they’ve taken since they joined WDI—Burress’s story about how she approaches her work seemed to sum up what working at WDI is all about. “I once gave a Make-a-Wish family a private tour of Soarin’ at Epcot,” she said. “They came to Walt Disney World once a year to celebrate their family’s health. It changed my perspective on what we do as Imagineers. Now, every decision we make, big or small, I think of that family and how they would be affected by it. I have never been more proud to be a part of an organization like this one.”

WDI comprises more than 140 disciplines, and, according to Carter, Imagineers should take “full advantage” of as many professional opportunities as you can. “It’s the culmination of different experiences that will get you where you want to go.”

Zachary Levi and Mandy Moore

Tangled: The Series
The voice cast and creative team behind Tangled: The Series let down their hair this morning at a panel in D23 Expo 2017’s Stage 28 that illustrated why the new animated series is so enchanting.

Though newcomers to Tangled, Jeremy Jordan and Eden Espinosa (Varian and Cassandra, respectively) are already fan favorites. Espinosa shared that she grew up in Anaheim and, by extension, Disneyland, where she eventually came to work (and was the singer of the song that accompanied the Magical fireworks show). But she recalled wishing, “I just want to record a voice for Disney.” She’d auditioned for the role of Rapunzel when the film was in production (as well as Frozen), so using her own voice to play a character on the hit series is a “full circle moment” for the actress.

This is the initial foray into animation for Jordan, who originated the role of Jack Kelly in Newsies on Broadway. When he first saw an animatic (early animation) of a scene in which he voiced the teen alchemist Varian, he shares, “I was laughing and crying at the same time. All my Disney dreams were coming true right before my eyes.” Our dreams came true when Sonnenburg gave us a sneak peek of a song we’ll hear on the series later this year—featuring Jordan singing a brand-new song by Disney Legend Alan Menken.

Zachary Levi loves the humor he’s able to bring to the role of Eugene. “I’m comic relief—and I love it,” he admitted. He was also excited to encounter a fan in Josh Gad, who told Levi yesterday at D23 Expo that he and his family watch Tangled: The Series together.

And Mandy Moore, Rapunzel herself, talked about coming back to the character she’s voiced since 2010. “I felt like we were really a team in making the decision,” she said of co-star Levi. When asked which other Tangled: The Series roles she might like to play, Moore threw it back to the “O.G.s”, sidekicks Maximus and Pascal. Moore isn’t the chameleon’s only adoring fan. D23 Expo guests were treated to a first look an upcoming episode, in which Pascal’s origin story is revealed. Even in the form of an animatic, the sequence had all of the emotion, humor and excitement fans have come to expect from the story of Tangled—just like this morning’s unforgettable panel.

D23 Expo daily recap The Lion King

A Celebration of The Lion King
Twenty-three years ago, when audiences saw that sun break over the African plains in the very first trailer, they knew they were in for something special. Disney’s classic The Lion King—still the highest grossing hand-drawn animated film of all time—keeps proving it has more and more “Circle of Life” still left in it, including a brand-new live-action film directed by Jon Favreau and a successful opening of the first-ever Mandarin stage production last year in Shanghai. The Lion King producer Don Hahn facilitated a panel Sunday, celebrating the legacy of this Disney gem. Joining him onstage was the creative team behind the film, including Rob Minkoff, co-director; Mark Henn, animator; Tony Bancroft, supervising animator for “Pumba;” Jim Cummings, voice of “Ed;” Ernie Sabella, voice of “Pumbaa;” and a surprise last-minute visit by Whoopi Goldberg, voice of Shenzi.

Minkoff told the audience how originally, the studio predicted that The Lion King would be a smaller film, barely cracking $50 million. Surprise, surprise—it doubled that in the first week. “People always want to know what exactly does an animation director do?” he said. He explained that an animation director works with each and every animator—who he described as “actors with pencils”—coaching and supporting them.

Hahn told this humorous story: Originally, the characters of Pumba and Timon sang the entire song “Can You Feel The Love Tonight.” At an early test screening in Atlanta, though, after the lights came up, singer-songwriter Elton John, who wrote the music for the film, just winced and asked, “What have you done to my beautiful song?” It was quickly changed.

The panel included historic footage of early pitch meetings, recording sessions, and examples of how the actors and creative teams brought to life memorable scenes. And, as a stirring and emotional grand finale, a choir of hundreds of fans showed up at the end to sing “Circle of Life,” led by Carmen Twillie, the singer who performed Elton John’s famous song in 1994 film’s opening scenes. Long live The Lion King! The Lion King is joining the Walt Disney Signature Collection on Digital HD August 15, and Blu-ray August 29!

D23 Expo Daily Download – Saturday

Richard Sherman

A Kiss Goodnight with Disney Legends Richard Sherman and Floyd Norman
“A Kiss Goodnight,” written by Disney Legend Richard Sherman, debuted in 2015 as the beautifully poignant final song for Disneyland Forever—the fireworks show created to commemorate the Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration… and now, the song has become a book with artwork created by Richard’s fellow Disney Legend Floyd Norman, and contributions from his wife, artist Adrienne Brown Norman. Saturday’s final panel in the D23 Expo Arena celebrated Richard, Floyd, and A Kiss Goodnight’s upcoming publication on August 22.

Audiences cheered as Wendy Lefkon, editorial director of Disney Editions, welcomed Richard and Floyd to the stage… who each told amazing anecdotes about their time with Walt, and about the stories Diane Disney Miller (Walt’s late daughter) shared about her father’s upbringing in Marceline, Missouri—which informed much of Floyd’s artwork for the book. Later, Wendy invited Adrienne; A Kiss Goodnight book designer Winnie Ho; Disney Press editor Brittany Rubiano; and music copyist Leslie Smith Buttars (who helped create the actual music notes that appear throughout the tome) to the stage to explain their own contributions to the labor-of-love project.

As the panel’s very own “kiss goodnight” for D23 Expo fans in attendance, Richard ultimately welcomed singer Juliana Hansen to the stage—who joined Richard (at the piano) for a lovely rendition of the original “A Kiss Goodnight” song, as well as two tunes from Mary Poppins: “Feed the Birds” (Walt’s favorite song) and a rousing audience sing-along of “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!”

Disney’s Magical Mid-Century
Don Hahn, best known for having produced Beauty and the Beast, the first animated film nominated for a Best Picture Oscar®, previewed his upcoming book, Yesterday’s Tomorrow: Disney’s Magical Mid-Century, to a packed—and riveted—audience on Saturday at the Walt Disney Archives Stage.

Hahn showcased pages from the book, which is out November 14, 2017, and drew oohs, ahhs, and plenty of laughs in the course of his spirited overview of the book, which is a paean to mid-century art, design, and pop culture—and reveals their influences on Disney entertainment. “The mid-century era was a crossroads between the old and new,” Hahn said, before beginning an almost-page-by-page look at this colorful, fascinating book. Hahn powerfully showed the impact of Modernism on the work of Disney artists like Mary Blair and Walt Peregoy; explained Walt’s business relationship with renowned Los Angeles architect—and his Holmby Hills neighbor—Welton Becket; reminded the audience of Walt’s sage embrace of television and his fascination with the Space Program; and explained how the world’s first theme park embraced the mid-century ethos—showing rarely seen images of the Monsanto House of the Future, the Disneyland Hotel, and extraordinary poster art developed for Disneyland. In the early ‘60s, the Disney Studio also went into the commercial business, creating classic mid-century-looking television commercials for companies such as Johnson Wax and Trix cereal.

This fascinating, colorful, instructive, and scholarly book is a must-have for anyone who loves this extraordinary era in Disney history.

Inside the Evolution of Pixar’s Characters
Dory. Sully. Riley. In the Pixar universe, every line, color, strand of hair, and key-stroke contribute toward the story—toward the characters. And no one creates characters like Pixar does. One of the best parts of Saturday’s The Evolution of Pixar’s Characters panel on Stage 28 was seeing all the stages of character development for the Inside Out characters, including Bing Bong, Disgust, Sadness, and Riley, and also the characters in WALL•E. And as a special treat, Daniel Arriaga, character art director, shared his sketches from the upcoming film Coco.

Have you ever thought about how long it takes to develop a character? According to Chris Sasaki, character designer, it’s different for each character. “Character designers wear so many hats,” he says. “What’s the story, what’s the mood, what’s their costume? It always come back to the story and the research.” Each designer on the panel admitted to beginning work on each character the old-fashioned way—with pencil on paper. “The blank page is always the scariest,” continued Sasaki.

One of John Lasseter’s main emphasis when developing characters is research. For example, WALL•E was created half in imagination and half in reality, according to Jay Shuster, production designer. He said the team actually took a trip to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to study robotics. Tia Kratter, manager of art and film education, Pixar University, agrees, sharing the story of how she used a hair dryer to blow hair around on stuffed animals so that designers could see how hair moves. And that’s just one of many examples. In this panel, Pixar designers took the lid off the proverbial pot and showed us the “secret sauce,” so to speak. And a tasty stew it is! In addition to Sasak, Kratter, Arriaga, and Shuster, fans also heard from Deanna Marsigliese, character designer; and Peter Docter, director.

Once Upon a Time
There are some exciting “new beginnings” on the horizon for ABC’s Once Upon a Time… and creators/executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz—as well as actor Colin O’Donoghue (Hook)—took fans on a journey through the show’s past, present, and future at today’s D23 Expo panel. Read more about it here.

Kingdom Hearts 3

Level Up! The Walt Disney Company’s Video Game Showcase
On Saturday at the D23 Expo Arena, fans took their excitement to the next level when Disney Consumer Products and Interactive provided sneak previews of hotly anticipated video games, such as Star Wars Battlefront II, Spider-Man, Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2, and a D23 Expo-exclusive sneak peek at a brand-new Toy Story-themed world for the eagerly awaited Kingdom Hearts 3, coming in 2018. A Wrinkle in Time

Disney, Marvel, & Lucasfilm — Live Action at The Walt Disney Studios
Hollywood’s biggest names in acting and directing… Surprises at every turn… Compelling stories and sneak peeks that had us on the edge of our seats. The Hall D23 presentation from The Walt Disney Studios this morning at D23 Expo featured all of these and more! Find out more here.

Marceline: Where the Magic Began
Walt Disney only lived in Marceline, Missouri, from 1905-1911, but as Kaye Malins, executive director of Marceline’s Walt Disney Hometown Museum, told a packed audience at the Walt Disney Archives Stage on Saturday afternoon, he never forgot this picturesque small town—an American pastoral of gently sloping hills, bending willow trees, and fragrant apple orchards.

In a charming walk back in time, Malins told the rapt audience that it was here that Walt attended his first school and first parade, here he sold his first art and got his first job, and here he saw his first live stage production—a performance of Peter Pan. Walt and his family moved to Kansas City in 1911, but he never forgot Marceline. He would return in 1956 for the Midwest premiere of The Great Locomotive Chase at Marceline’s Uptown Theatre, during which time he spent the night at the Malins family home—chosen because it was the only house in town that had air-conditioning. “My perfect life was just about to get even better,” Malins remembers thinking before the visit from Walt. Walt would also return to Marceline in 1960 to dedicate Walt Disney Elementary School.

Malins showcased a plethora of charming pictures of Walt and Roy during their visits to Marceline, including one of Walt at The Great Locomotive Chase premiere, when he told the audience of mostly children, “You children are lucky to live here. The best times in my life were spent in Marceline.”

Oceans, Forests, and Outer Space—Creating the Worlds in Pixar’s Universe
Have you ever wondered how all those spectacular backgrounds and environments are created in Pixar films? From the undersea environs of Finding Dory and the previously unimagined worlds of Inside Out, to the lush greenery of Brave and the outer-space splendor of WALL•E, the artists and designers behind some of Pixar’s most recognizable and beloved films took us through the process of creating the beautiful environments and moods of Pixar’s unparalleled collection of blockbuster animated films. Ralph Eggleston, production designer, Incredibles 2, said, “You can’t be precious with your art. Every film is different—for every 500 drawings you do, maybe one will be used.”

Kim White, director of photography and lighting, also described a long development process. “The most beautiful shots of Inside Out aren’t in the movie,” she said. “They got cut for story reasons. The director tried to reuse them somewhere because he loved the lighting, but he couldn’t. You just have to get used to that.” During the panel, fans were treated to a vibrant gallery of artwork, pre-visual development, mood pieces, and textures that helped shape some of the most beautiful and memorable films in Pixar’s—and Hollywood’s—history. Joining Eggleston and White in the panel were Sharon Calahan, directory of photography and lighting; Harley Jessup, production designer; and Katharine Sarafian, producer.

Power of the Princess

The Enduring Power of the Princess
What happens when four Disney princesses hang out together on one stage? The audience watching the Power of the Princess panel found out when Disney Legends Jodi Benson, Paige O’Hara, and Anika Noni Rose and Moana’s Auli’i Cravalho appeared on Stage 28 on Saturday to share their experiences making the movies that brought four famous Disney Princesses to life. Hosted by animators Kira Lehtomaki and Amy Smeed, the panel featured clips of the actresses recording their famous songs, pencil tests of the princesses by animator Mark Henn, and a special viewing of a princess-tastic clip from Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2, which features all the original living Disney Princess voice actresses reprising their roles. The panel finished with each actress performing a passage from their iconic Disney songs.

ABC Family Feud

ABC Comedy Kids Take on Celebrity Family Feud at D23 Expo 2017
“Let’s play the Feud!” On Saturday, Modern Family’s Nolan Gould donned an appropriately Steve Harvey-esque blue blazer for a rollicking D23 Expo version of Celebrity Family Feud, featuring a bevy of young stars from several ABC Comedies—including Miles Brown and Marsai Martin from black-ish; Daniel DiMaggio and Logan Pepper from American Housewife; Kyla Kenedy and Mason Cook from Speechless; Hudson Yang, Forrest Wheeler, and Ian Chen from Fresh Off the Boat; and Nolan’s co-star Aubrey Anderson-Emmons from Modern Family. And it was all in celebration of ABC’s Summer Fun & Games, the network’s insanely fun programming block that features fan-favorites like CFF, Battle of the Network Stars, Match Game, and To Tell the Truth

Separated into two teams—Team Fun, captained by Speechless’ Kyla; and Team Games, captained by Fresh Off the Boat’s Hudson—the kids were put to the Feud test with questions like “Name a character you envy because he or she can fly,” “Tell us one thing everyone knows about Star Wars’ Yoda,” and “Name someone from Wonderland that Alice would invite to her birthday party.” As with the primetime Feud, the Expo version relied on the results of an informal survey to come up with top answers to each question. After a super-close game (including an extra “sudden-death” question)—and a great “Fast Money” round with Mason and Hudson—Team Games took the win!

Once the final “Survey says!” was said, Nolan hosted a Q&A with his fellow ABC Comedy stars—where each kid had a chance to talk a bit about their careers. Marsai shared several adorable anecdotes, including the fact that she’d spilled syrup on her clothing during her final black-ish audition (“A great first impression!” she joked). After a few questions from the assembled crowd, the stars wished everyone an amazing Day 2 at D23 Expo…

Don’t miss Nolan and all the other comedy kids when Modern Family, black-ish, Speechless, Fresh Off the Boat, and American Housewife return to ABC this fall!

Disney Legends 30th Anniversary: A Legendary Conversation
Film historian Leonard Maltin hosted a celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Disney Legends Awards ceremony today with a lively, revealing—and often hilarious—panel discussion with a selection of Disney Legends. Joining Maltin on stage were Kathryn Beaumont (the voice of Alice and Wendy); renowned animator Andreas Deja; Karen Dotrice (Jane Banks in Mary Poppins); Bill Farmer (voice of Goofy and Pluto); Imagineer Bob Gurr; Walt Disney Archives Founder Dave Smith; and Mark Hamill, who was one of 11 luminaries named Disney Legends today.

During the course of this wide-ranging discussion, we learned, among other things, that Dave Smith counted the exact number of paper clips in Walt’s desk when he catalogued his office; Bill Farmer can do a spot-on John Wayne and Yogi Bear in addition to the voices he does for Disney; Walt personally selected Kathryn Beamount for her Disney roles; and Mark Hamill loves voice acting because “there is liberation in not being seen, there are chances you can take when the camera isn’t pointing at you.”

Unique and one-of-a-kind. That’s how Andrea Favilli described the Disney Legends Award statue at the beginning of the panel. And that’s what each Disney Legend is, too. “Each of you has given us so much Disney history,” Maltin said in closing. “You’re indelible in our minds and hearts.”

D23 Thanks The Golden Girls for Being Our Friends with Expo Panel
Slice up that cheesecake and pull up a lanai chair… it’s time to celebrate Dorothy, Blanche, Rose, and Sophia! This afternoon, Stage 28 was packed with friendly faces—much like Miami’s Rusty Anchor Bar on a Saturday night—as “The Golden Girls: A Celebration Laughter, Friendship and Cheesecake” honored the quintessential, long-running Touchstone Television series.

Writers Barry Fanaro and Stan Zimmerman; producer/director (who helmed more than 100 The Golden Girls episodes) Terry Hughes; production designers John Shaffner and Michael Hynes; and The Golden Girls super-fan/author Jim Colucci (Golden Girls Forever) joined Imagineer Morgan Richardson for a free-wheeling discussion of the show’s lasting impact.

The panel discussed everything from the ladies’ memorable Royal Command Performance for England’s Queen Mother and the impact that particular episodes had on both the staff and the actresses, to the iconic wallpaper in Blanche’s bedroom (direct from the Beverly Hills Hotel!) and everything in between… fans came away with a funnier, more intimate appreciation for the ladies.

From Screen to Page: Gravity Falls and Star vs. The Forces of Evil
Beloved cartoon shows have a special magic that makes them jump off the screen and into the realities of the fans, or, in the case of Gravity Falls and Star vs. The Forces of Evil, the wacky adventures of the beloved characters have jumped off the screen and into the pages of books released by Disney Press. Featuring a panel of Alex Hirsch (creator, Gravity Falls), Daron Nefcy (creator, Star vs. The Forces of Evil), and writers, editors, and illustrators of the shows’ amazing books, the panel celebrated the recent release of Gravity Falls: Journal Three and Star vs. the Forces of Evil Star and Marco’s Guide to Mastering Every Dimension.

Hirsch and Nefcy discussed the process behind creating a printed extension to their television worlds. Hirsch explained, “There’s no such thing as a show that ends when the series end. If we didn’t make books, the fans would anyway! With the rise of the modern fan community, Disney publishing gives us the chance to make what you’re showing us you want.” Nefcy added, “The universes are so big, and we can never fit anything onto the show.”

Besides discussing the two books which have already been released, the panel also focused on Don’t Color this Book!: It’s Cursed, the Gravity Falls-themed coloring book (available for purchase July 18) which book illustrator Stephanie Ramirez described as “the first coloring book with a narrative.”

Additionally, the creators announced not one, but two new books: Gravity Falls the Graphic Novel and Star’s Magic Book of Spells. The panel guests were also treated to a special screening of a clip from Star vs. The Forces of Evil: The Battle for Mewni, featuring the first time Queen Moon met the villainous Toffee.
