Ghirardelli Chocolate Chip Cookies

Makes about 4 dozen cookies

Ingredients

11 1/2 ounces Semi-Sweet Chocolate Baking Chips
1 cup butter or margarine, softened
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 1/4 cups unsifted flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup walnuts or pecans, chopped (optional)

Directions

Heat oven to 375 degrees F.
Stir flour with baking soda and salt; set aside.
In large mixing bowl, beat butter with sugar and brown sugar at medium speed until creamy and lightened in color.
Add eggs and vanilla, one at a time. Mix on low speed until incorporated.
Gradually blend dry mixture into creamed mixture. Stir in nuts and chocolate chips.
Drop by tablespoon onto ungreased cookie sheets.
Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown.

How to Make a Beauty Fall in Love with a Beast

One of the greatest challenges facing the creative team behind Beauty and the Beast was convincing their audience that a lovely young French maiden with her head buried in books could fall in love with a monstrous buffalo-headed creature sporting a lion’s mane, wolf’s tail and the tusks of a boar.

Not to mention making the story appropriate viewing for children.

The daunting task required the invention of scenarios that allowed Belle to see beyond the physical into the soul of a cursed young man paying dearly for crimes he committed as a boy. “Basically, it’s a story of the Beast and Belle having dinner every night,” notes the film’s Oscar®-winning composer Alan Menken, now scoring Disney’s live-action Beauty and Beast remake set for release in March 2017. “So there’s a lot of story invention that had to happen in order for it to really come to life.”

“They’re up against incredible odds,” adds former Disney Feature Animation President Tom Schumacher, now president & producer, Disney Theatrical Group. “And I think that’s the story’s romance. [She] doesn’t like him to begin with, but [comes to] see through why he behaves like he behaves. And they bond.”

Close your eyes and ask yourself, ‘When is the moment we know for sure that Belle has fallen in love with Beast?’

For Paige O’Hara, the voice of Belle, it’s the “Something There” sequence out in the snow, when Belle watches Beast awkwardly attempting to rediscover his lost innocence by offering seed to the birds that have gathered on his castle grounds.

“Birds come on his hand,” O’Hara says. “They’re afraid of him at first. And Belle touches him and they look at each other and she runs behind the tree. That’s the moment that this young woman realizes she’s falling in love. And that’s really the turning point in the film. They’d never had a romantic relationship; never had that touch. All these emotions are happening to her because, how could [she] be falling in love with the Beast? But [she] is.”

Before long, the two are cuddling in front of a burning fire about to read a book. Oh yes, there’s something there that wasn’t there before.

By the time Belle loops her delicate hand under the Beast’s arm as they make their way down the grand staircase for a romantic evening of dinner and dancing, there’s no doubting the deep feelings these two have developed for one another. Helping the animators set the mood was a revolutionary computer animation system created for the studio by Pixar. Recalls the film’s producer, Don Hahn: “[When] Belle and Beast are dancing, we wanted to create an environment so you felt like the camera was kind of celebrating them falling in love as much as the animation was.”

“The biggest thing in Beauty that you think of is, of course, that ballroom sequence,” Schumacher adds. “At the time it was so breathtaking that we could do that.”

Sealing the deal was the stirring title song sung to perfection by Angela Lansbury. “She sang, you know, ‘Tale as old as time…’,” remembers Hahn of the recording session. “She did it in one take. Thank God for Angela, because she knew how to perform that song.” The love ballad went on to win the Oscar for Best Original Song, and the pop version recorded by Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson topped charts around the globe, selling over a million copies worldwide and winning Dion and Bryson a Grammy®.

“I think the main legacy of Beauty and the Beast is romantic love, but also just love in general,” offers Menken. “The love of Mrs. Potts and Chip. The love of these enchanted objects that, although the Beast is tortured, remain with him. The love of Belle and her father.”

But most profoundly, the love a Beauty discovered for her Beast.

Disneyland Railroad and Rivers of America Attractions to Reopen in Summer ’17

There’s a lot to look forward to at Disneyland park as we head towards 2017 and beyond, and we’ve heard some great news from our pals over at the Disney Parks Blog: After a period of refurbishment, the Disneyland Railroad—as well as the Rivers of America attractions—will return in Summer 2017!

Soon, the Rivers of America will feature a beautiful new riverbank, as well as an elevated trestle over which the Disneyland Railroad will travel. Additionally, all your favorite Rivers of America attractions will be up and running once more—including the Mark Twain Riverboat and the Sailing Ship Columbia; the Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island; the Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes; and even the legendary Disneyland nighttime spectacular Fantasmic!

Disney Channel Teams with Girl Scouts of the USA to Inspire Girls

Hot on the heels of the big recent Elena of Avalor debut comes some very special news: Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) and Disney Channel are teaming up to inspire girls and their families to practice leadership, using Disney’s newest princess as motivation!

The collaboration brings GSUSA’s focus on leading like a G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™, the Girl Scout way, and Disney Channel’s newest animated TV series into action with the debut of The Elena of Avalor Leadership Guide by Girl Scouts and Disney Channel. Available in English and Spanish beginning August 2, the guide showcases leadership activities and conversations parents and other caregivers can have with their preschool through fifth-grade girls, to boost their everyday leadership skills and prepare them to create the amazing future they imagine.

The Muppets Bring an All-New Show to Walt Disney World—This Fall!

“It’s time to play the music, it’s time to light the lights!” As lovers of all things Muppet, we’re particularly excited to announce that the Muppets are bringing a brand-new live show to Walt Disney World! The Muppets Present… Great Moments in American History will delight guests at Magic Kingdom park, outside The Hall of Presidents, starting this fall.

The extremely patriotic Sam Eagle, an American eagle forever trying to set a high moral standard for the Muppets, will join Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, The Great Gonzo, and James Jefferson—town crier of Liberty Square—as they gather to present historical tales in truly hysterical fashion… From the midnight ride of Paul Revere, to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Muppets will appear throughout the day to share their own unique take on the founding fathers and the birth of the United States of America. The show will, of course, feature plenty of wacky Muppets humor—as well as an original song, written just for this show.

Destination: Disney Style Brings Disney Fashion to YouTube

Beloved by adults and kids alike, Disney fashion has truly gone global over the last few years… so it’s no wonder that a new digital series is coming to Disney Style’s corner of YouTube. Destination: Disney Style will take viewers on a trip across the globe to explore the unique and fun ways its characters and stories are interpreted through fashion. The five-part original series is hosted by YouTube influencers LaurDIY, Jaleesa Moses, Meredith Foster, and Lucy & Lydia, and gives fans a glimpse of recent international Disney collaborations, street style, and trends in fashion capitals around the planet. Each episode comes from an international city—including Tokyo, Shanghai, and London—and looks at how local designers, fans, and fashionistas alike put their own spin on Disney style.

Live Music Returns to Disneyland Park’s Tomorrowland Terrace

Are you a live music fan? Do you also enjoy a trip to Disneyland park? (Honestly, that describes our entire department here at D23!) Then have we got news for you: For a limited time, live music is returning to the stage at Tomorrowland Terrace!

Guest favorites such as 80z All Stars, Scot Bruce, Suburban Legends, and more will be performing on weekends—Friday through Sunday—beginning August 6, and only for a limited time. Different bands will appear from day to day, so be sure to check the Disneyland entertainment schedule before your visit.

Some very cool groups have performed at the Terrace over the years—from future Tony®-winning drum and bugle corps Blast! to former MMC stars The Party (on an episode of 1990s TV series Blossom) and even The Police! (Yes, the one with Sting.) Amazing, right? So don’t miss being a part of Tomorrowland’s musical history, all month long.

The Crowns of The Princess Diaries

From the moment we first watched the shy and clumsy Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) discover her connection to the Genovian throne in The Princess Diaries (2001), we knew she was a real-life princess we could all identify with—complete with pore strip, retainer, and out-of-control hair. (All right, fans, we know “Catch a Falling Star” is already starting to play in your head…)

But a true princess story wouldn’t be complete with crowns. And the Walt Disney Archives carefully preserves an incredible collection of exquisite crowns from The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004). Disney Wonder Becomes Winter Wonderland with New Frozen Stage Show

We may still be “in summer” but we just got chills! Our friends at Disney Cruise Line just announced that Frozen, A Musical Spectacular will make its way to the Walt Disney Theatre aboard the Disney Wonder! Starting November 10, 2016, guests sailing from Galveston, Texas will be able to relive the story of Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Sven, and Olaf as Frozen comes to life on stage in this brand-new show unique to the Disney Wonder.

You’ll feel like you’re seeing the hit animated film “for the first time in forever” thanks to a fantastic flurry of theatrical techniques, modern technology, and iconic Disney storytelling. “The story of Frozen is one of the most iconic animated movies ever, so this is a unique and special opportunity to retell the story onboard the Disney Wonder, transporting guests right into the world of Arendelle,” said Kevin Eld, creative portfolio executive, Walt Disney Imagineering. With intricate costumes and sets, unbelievable special effects, and show-stopping numbers, Frozen, A Musical Spectacular will transport Disney Wonder guests to the fjords of Norway, no matter their cruise itinerary!

Tony® Award-nominated director Sheryl Kaller (Next Fall, Mothers and Sons) leads the talented team bringing the snowy story to the stage. The popular music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez—the creators of the Frozen film score—will be adapted from the screenplay by four-time Tony Award nominee Chad Beguelin (Aladdin, The Wedding Singer, Elf, Gotta Dance), and our favorite reindeer and the sweetest snowman will be just as vibrant on stage as they were on screen, thanks to dynamic puppetry by Michael Curry (The Lion King on Broadway). Fun in the Sun: 8 Amazing Disney Resort Water Slides

What combines the best of a Disney Park attraction, and the beat-the-heat advantages of a resort pool? Why, a Disney-designed water slide, of course! Perfect for every member of your family, Disney water slides offer thrills, chills, and spills that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. These unique attractions are the best way to cool off after a long day at the park, while still having a lot of fun.

The summer season may be winding down (with the first day of school just around the corner), but there’s still time for a Disney diversion or two. D23 has combed through Disney Parks and Resorts worldwide to highlight some of our very favorite water slides… Did your fave make the list? Doubloon Lagoon’s “Scales” Slide at Port Orleans Resort—French Quarter
Meet Scales, the 51-foot-long, blue sea serpent that lives at the Port Orleans Resort. Don’t worry, he’s very friendly; once you take a ride on this snaking water slide, Scales’ “tongue” deposits you safely into the Doubloon Lagoon pool lagoon with a mighty spray. And here’s a fun fact: Scales’ name was partially inspired by the song “Scales and Arpeggios” from the 1970 Disney film The Aristocats.

Luna Park Pool Slide at Disney’s BoardWalk Inn
Stepping into Disney’s BoardWalk Inn, you’re transported to Atlantic City of the 1920s… and that goes for the resort’s Luna Park pool area too, which is themed after a whimsical, old-timey carnival. A fantastic 200-foot-long water slide ends in a 184,217-gallon basin. (If you’re hungry after your slide sojourn, check out the nearby lounge and bar.)

Monorail Slides at Disneyland Hotel
There are two Monorail-themed slides at the Disneyland Hotel: the 180-foot-long slide, and 80-foot-long slide. Both are replicas of the original Mark 1 Monorail trains that opened on June 14, 1959. We can’t ever choose between the two, so we ride both… multiple times… until we’re ready for a drink over at Trader Sam’s.

Redwood Pool Slide at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel
The Redwood Pool area at Disney’s Grand Californian is just about as majestic as the stately California tree it’s named after. The pool includes a 90-foot-long waterslide that curves around the giant Redwood “stump”; you’ll fly down this wild slide—bordered by beautiful pine trees and craggy boulders—before splashing down into the pool at the bottom.

AquaDuck on Disney Dream & Disney Fantasy (Disney Cruise Line)
Developed by Walt Disney Imagineers, this amazing, totally unprecedented water slide is found only on Disney Cruise Line (specifically, on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy ships). The AquaDuck takes riders on a crazy, waterlogged journey up, down, around, and even off the side of the ship through 765 feet of snaking tubes. Transparent, uncovered sections of the slide allow for breathtaking views of the ship—and ocean—below. Ride if you dare!

Tubestone Curl Slide at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa
The Tubestone Curl water slide is an open-air, twisty-turny tube adventure that eventually launches you into the beautiful Waikolohe Stream pool area (Waikolohe means “mischievous water” in Hawaiian, so the area is aptly named). Feel free to ride it solo, or with a partner; along the way, you can explore the Imagineering-designed Waikolohe Valley and discover all kinds of details inspired by natural Hawaiian beauty.

Summit Plummet at Disney’s Blizzard Beach
A mind-boggling 120-foot sheer slope awaits you at Disney’s Blizzard Beach’s most extreme water attraction! Summit Plummet is a “ski-jump”-like slide that’s so steep, you can’t see where you’re going… until you get there, of course! You’ll plunge 12 stories down, then rocket through a darkened tunnel before emerging into a massive whitewater spray. Are you game?

Humunga Kowabunga at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon
Not to be outdone, Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park has its own outrageously thrilling water slide. Humunga Kowabunga sends you 214 feet downhill at a 60-degree angle! Three side-by-side enclosed body slides mean there are thrills and spills for (big) kids, teens, and adults alike. You’ll zoom downhill in the dark, dropping five full stories before a mega-cool surprise ending. Never been? Don’t worry, we won’t spoil it for you…

Disney twenty-three Celebrates the 25th Anniversary of Beauty and the Beast

This year, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast—the first animated film ever to be nominated for an Academy Award^® for Best Picture—celebrates its 25th anniversary, and Disney twenty-three is giving fans a spectacular look at the film from its inception to its timeless legacy. The issue features interviews with Paige O’Hara (Belle), Robby Benson (Beast), Angela Lansbury (Mrs. Potts), David Ogden Stiers (Cogsworth), Richard White (Gaston), composer Alan Menken, screenwriter Linda Woolverton, producer Don Hahn, and many more, as well as stories about how the film has been equally successful in Disney theme parks and on stage. While we’ve seen many beautiful images of Disney’s newest park during the day, we wanted to take a closer, nighttime look at Shanghai Disney Resort.

Corners of Fantasyland come to life with new light at night—we love the stained glass hearts in the windows!

The Alice in Wonderland Maze becomes curiouser and curiouser after dark.

Perhaps even more iconic at night than it is during the day, Tron Lightcycle Power Run beams brightly in Tomorrowland, while Jet Packs spin and shine through the night.

It’s All in the Family: Boy Meets World Cast Reunion

The Boy Meets World family was already larger-than-life when the show aired its final episode in 2000, and it has continued to grow throughout three seasons of its family-filled follow-up, Girl Meets World. All of these characters are near and dear to our hearts, from Boy Meets World’s Mr. Feeny to Girl Meets World’s Farkle, which is we were so excited to see most of the original cast reunite and join the new cast for a ‘family reunion,’ as Ben Savage (Cory Matthews) shared on his Instagram.

Rider Strong (Shawn Hunter), Danny McNulty (Harvey “Harley” Keiner), Willaim Russ (Alan Matthews), Betsy Randle (Amy Matthews), Lee Norris (Stuart Minkus), Will Friedle (Eric Matthews), Anthony Tyler Quinn (Jonathan Turner), Lily Nicksay and Lindsay Ridgeway (Morgan Matthews), and William Daniels (Mr. Feeny) joined Ben Savage, Danielle Fishel (Topanga Matthews) and their new Girl Meets World family in the photo above.
