Her Time has Come: Meet A Wrinkle in Time’s Storm Reid

By Beth Deitchman

“Be a warrior.”

It would be a daunting command for any teen to receive, even if it weren’t coming from a figure as imposing as Mrs. Which (played by Oprah Winfrey) at the climax of the trailer for Disney’s upcoming film A Wrinkle in Time. Mrs. Which issues the directive with the conviction of someone who knows the 13-year-old is capable of great things… even if the young heroine is a little less certain. We met Storm Reid, the delightful actress who plays Meg Murry, during production on the film’s Santa Clarita, California set, and we quickly realized why director Ava DuVernay placed her right in the center of battle between darkness and light.

The Atlanta-born actress spoke with a quiet confidence during a break between scenes on a busy day of filming. Reid, who had read Madeleine L’Engle’s classic novel while she was in sixth grade, shared that she didn’t initially see herself as Meg. She remembered thinking before her first audition, “I’m not going to get this, so I was just going to try my best.” But her best was more than enough to impress DuVernay and producer Catherine Hand, who told us that Reid was the first actor to be hired for the film.

Reid had to keep her big news a secret from all but her closest family and friends until casting as announced, so she used the time to prepare for this life-changing role. “I wrote ideas down from the book, but I didn’t really want to copy that Meg,” said Reid, who wanted to make the role her own. “Of course, the main things that people love and know about the book, I want to have those things—but I still want to have my own little quirks and stuff about Meg.”

storm reid a wrinkle in time

Meg Murry is the largest role that Reid has played to date and the actress worked to overcome the initial challenge of feeling like the movie is resting heavily on her shoulders. “I don’t really look at myself as the lead of this movie because I feel like we’re all a team,” she came to realize. But acting alongside the film’s remarkable visual effects and performing the stunts in those striking sequences remained a hurdle—albeit a fun one—throughout the production. “Being in a harness all day, not being able to move around like I like to and dance—that’s a challenge,” Reid said with a laugh. “You get used to it, but I still [find myself wishing] that I could still do a cartwheel [at any given moment] and I can’t.”

But the eighth grader was in good company while suspended above ground, frequently finding herself alongside “Ms. Oprah,” as Reid calls the Disney Legend. “She’ll sit up on her harness and not want to come down. I was nervous about meeting her, but she’s so sweet,” Reid emphasized.

Reid also had nothing for admiration for the visionary director she knows as “Ms. Ava.” “I’ve never worked with a director like her before,” said Reid. “She moves props, she moves marks. She’s not just a director—she’s really involved. I know that to make this movie successful—to make anything that we do in life successful—we have to work as a team and really cultivate our ideas together.”

When asked how she would follow her star turn in A Wrinkle in Time, Reid shared that she hopes to shadow DuVernay on one of the filmmaker’s future projects and she revealed that she might try her own hand at directing sometime in the future. “I have a couple of ideas that I have brewing in my head, so hopefully I’ll get to pursue them someday,” she said. In the meantime, Reid is content to spend time with her friends, play with her three dogs, and watch movies with her family. “I know once this movie comes out it’s going to be a whole different perspective, so I’m just trying to stay the 13-year-old that I am now.”

That can’t be a small feat for a young adult who is holding her own on screen alongside a cast that also includes Oscar® winner Reese Witherspoon, Emmy® nominee Mindy Kaling, Emmy nominee Chris Pine, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Zach Galifianakis. “I feel like this is an opportunity of a lifetime, so I’m trying to seize everything and every little bit and soak it all up,” Reid happily stated. She loves that the film’s cast members have diverse backgrounds and—having grown up enjoying series such as Shake It Up, The Proud Family, and That’s So Raven—she’s been proud to receive tweets and messages from fans who are thrilled to have a Meg that looks like them. “I hope that [the film] inspires girls my age and everyone—women, women of color, different races, any gender—to believe in themselves and know that they can do anything,” the effervescent actress stressed. “Nothing’s impossible, because in that word it says ‘I’m possible.’ So just always know that no matter what, you can always do it and don’t let anybody ever tell you different!”

Celebrate Lunar New Year with Our Favorite Disney Dogs

By Megan Deppe

We can’t find a single bone to pick with any of these cuddly canines as we prepare to celebrate the Lunar New Year! The Year of the Dog begins today and we can think of no better time to celebrate our favorite pups from throughout Disney’s history. We’ve seen Disney dogs help their owners find true love, guard them in times of danger, and settle in for lots of cuddles. Lunar New Year also marks the perfect time to get to know these pooches a little better.

We’ll start off our celebration of our favorite Disney dogs with the very first Disney dog—Pluto—Mickey’s canine companion, who loves Mickey the most!

2. Lady and Tramp (Lady and the Tramp)
Lady and Tramp may have started out as polar opposites, but that doesn’t mean that the two of them don’t make a great team. In fact, their differences actually complement each other perfectly. Lady’s tendency is to approach things somewhat cautiously; Tramp can coax Lady out of her shell and, at the same time, learn to take the world a bit more seriously from her.

3. Winston (Feast)
Everyone can see a bit of themselves in Winston, the dog who eats anything and everything put in front of him—except veggies (We don’t always feel that either, buddy). Five Reasons Why You Need to Watch Disney’s ZOMBIES

By Beth Deitchman

Is there any better way to experience the challenges and triumphs of young adulthood than through a Disney Channel Original Movie? “DCOMs,” as they’re called by the fans who love them, have given us magical musical looks at baseball players and mathletes who want to break from the status quo, taken us to the rock ‘n’ roll summer camp of our dreams, and introduced us to young villain progeny who might not be as rotten to the core as most people think they are. The newest DCOM, Disney’s ZOMBIES, takes on the monster movie genre as only Disney Channel can—with memorable songs, eye-popping choreography, and relatable characters the movies are known for, even when those characters just happen to be the undead.

ZOMBIES is set in the suburban town of Seabrook some 50 years after a zombie apocalypse. Thanks to a nifty device the zombies all wear on their wrists, they no longer pose a threat to humans and are allowed to attend the local high school alongside their human counterparts. It turns out that old fears are even harder to put to rest than zombies, so the undead continue to be relegated to their own part of Seabrook—the isolated, but incredibly creative, community of Zombietown. When devoted cheerleader Addison meets aspiring football player Zed, the pair realize that the differences between them are meant to be celebrated, so they team up to show the rest of Seabrook that conformity isn’t the way to build a solid community.

We spoke with stars Meg Donnelly (Addison) and Milo Manheim (Zed) about the brand-new music-and dance-filled movie premiering tomorrow night on Disney Channel at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Here’s why the lifelong DCOM fans think you’re going to love ZOMBIES:

Zombies

1. Characters that are full of life… even when they’re undead.
“I don’t think these zombies are similar to any other type of zombie,” says newcomer Milo Manheim, who plays Zed, a character much like the effusive actor himself. “He’s a got a lot of swagger and style. He’s great—he’s very positive and he fights for what he believes in. That’s my favorite part about him: He has a goal, he sets his mind to it, and he does it.”

Addison, a cheerleader with a secret that sets her apart from most Seabrook residents, is played by Meg Donnelly, who also plays high school student Taylor Otto on ABC’s American Housewife. Donnelly tells us, “She believes that she can change the world through cheer, meaning if you cheer on people that you love and you want to support them, it can really light up people’s days and everyone can kind of come together.” The character’s optimism and empathetic nature inspired the actress, who shares, “I find myself in my real life going, ‘What would Addison do in this situation?’”

Zombies

2. Songs you’ll love to sing as much as the actors did.
If you’re a regular Disney Channel viewer, you’ve no doubt heard ZOMBIE’s signature anthem, “BAMM,” and watched the high-energy video. The scene in which the song appears is Manheim’s favorite. “The coolest scene, in my opinion, is ‘BAMM,’” he says, “just because of the set and how everything looks—and the dancing and visuals are incredible.” You’ll meet Addison in the opening number, “My Year,” and for Donnelly—who is living a childhood dream as the star of a DCOM—filming the sequence was a pinch-me moment. “I remember we were waiting to film for about four weeks, and every time that song came on I got goose bumps—I get chills even now,” she says. “I just remember thinking, ‘Wow, I’m actually doing this. It’s crazy.’”

Zombies

3. It’s not just the cheerleaders who have all of the moves.
“However much fun you think we had, just multiply that by like 2 billion,” Donnelly emphasizes. A musical theater veteran, she had a solid dance background but couldn’t help but be a bit intimidated at the outset. “But we all became such a huge family so fast it was easy to pick up the choreography,” she says. We knew we had each other’s back and it became fun.”

“I wasn’t used to all the poppin’ and lockin’ the zombies are doing,” Manheim says, and he also appreciated the supportive cast and learned a tremendous amount from day one. “I’m so thankful to have such an incredible choreographer, Christopher Scott, who was able to teach me so quickly how to do all these things and make them look super awesome.”

Zombies

4. …Did we mention the zombies?
You’ve never seen zombies like this before, and the filmmakers went to great lengths to give Disney Channel’s undead a distinctive look. “Every human was in and out of the makeup trailer before I was done,” Manheim mentions, but the process—which involved “spray painting” the actor’s arms in addition to styling his hair green every day—was streamlined over the course of the production. Still, Manheim laughs, “Meg got it so easy! She could probably do her makeup five times before I could do my makeup once.”

Donnelly agrees, and admits that she appreciated the later call times and the shorter visits to the makeup trailer that came with playing a cheerleader. “I am jealous, though, because the zombie costumes are so cool,” she says, “and Zed’s best friend is Eliza and sometimes I wanted to be Eliza because zombie clothes are great.”

Zombies

5. The movie features an inspiring message for everyone—zombies and humans, alike.
Both Donnelly and Manheim hope that ZOMBIES’ themes of acceptance and celebrating what makes us different resonate with viewers. “I want [viewers] to understand that being unique is awesome. Doing what you love to do is how you can become truly happy and you have to give everyone a chance,” Manheim says. We don’t have to all be the same way.” Donnelly underscores that in addition to embracing unique qualities in other people, young viewers should also look within. “We should all accept everyone for who they are, but you should also accept yourself, too. I think that’s really important, the ‘yourself’ part—because a lot of people don’t realize that,” she shares. “If you have differences or the little unique things about you that no one else has, you should really embrace that and really be true to yourself.”

The two actors—and Disney fans—each shared with D23 their Disney “Fab Five.” Click here to hear what they had to say, and tune in to ZOMBIES tomorrow night at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Disney Channel, or on the DisneyNOW app.

D23 Fab Five: Milo Manheim and Meg Donnelly from Disney’s ZOMBIES Share Their Disney Favorites

By Beth Deitchman

They may play a cheerleader and someone undead in Disney’s ZOMBIES, but actors Milo Manheim and Meg Donnelly are Disney fans, through and through. “I had multiple birthday trips to Disneyland,” says Southern California native Manheim, who adds to his Disney cred the estimation that he’s watched High School Musical about 80,000 times. And Donnelly, who grew up in New York but went on annual Walt Disney World vacations with her family while growing up, recalls dressing up in a Belle costume for two solid months when she was young.

The pair recently traveled to ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort where they took part in a special grand opening event for The Arena—a new venue that will host a variety of sports for girls and boys, including gymnastics and cheerleading—which featured a special performance to the movie’s hit single “BAMM.” During the holiday season, Manheim and Donnelly were also part of Disney Parks Presents: A Disney Channel Holiday Celebration, performing the song “Wonderful Christmas Time.” “I’ve been going to Disney World my whole life, but going for work is a completely different experience and it was so amazing,” Donnelly shares.

1. Favorite Disney character: “My favorite Disney character of all time is Olaf the snowman from Frozen. He’s perfect—I love him. He’s so optimistic. He’s the happiest person I’ve ever seen. I wish I could meet him. I’m going to meet him one day—you can quote me on that!”

2. Favorite attraction: “I grew up at Disneyland so I love Disneyland, but my favorite attraction is Avatar Flight of Passage at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. It’s amazing—it’s so crazy. It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before.”

3. Favorite song: “Disney just has this way where they can turn anything into the most catchy thing. Honestly, I think I’ve probably sung ‘Get’cha Head in the Game’ from High School Musical more than any song ever—not even just Disney songs. It’s just the hypest song ever.”

4. Favorite thing about Disney: “Not a lot of people get to experience this, but the people that work at Disney—everyone behind the scenes—are the best. It’s like a family at Disney.”

zombies fab 5

5. Favorite of all time: “Just Moana—everything about it is amazing. Everything about Moana, in every single way, is perfect.”

Meg Donnelly (Addison):

“Wait—did Milo say Moana? I knew it!” Donnelly laughs, when we catch up with her to hear her favorites.

1. Favorite attraction: “Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith. That’s my all-time favorite roller coaster ever in the entire world. I’m a huge music fan, and I love Aerosmith, so you’re going on a roller coaster but they’re blasting Aerosmith in your ear—how cool is that? And there’s also three loops. It’s crazy! You’re supposed to be in L.A. [on the ride], and I remember every time I would go on it I felt like I was in Hollywood, living the dream.”

2. Favorite movie: “The Little Mermaid. That was huge. Ariel was my biggest obsession because I’ve always wanted to be a mermaid, too.”

zombies fab 5

3. Favorite Disney character: “Mickey Mouse—I actually had the biggest crush on Mickey Mouse when I was little.”

zombies fab 5

4. Favorite song: “My favorite song is definitely from High School Musical 2—it’s called ‘What Time Is it?’ That song gives me goosebumps every time. There’s a key change in the song, and whenever the key changes I’m all, ‘oh, it’s so good!’ As soon as school is out you have to listen to ‘What Time Is It?’ from High School Musical or you won’t have a summer [laughs].

5. Favorite thing about Disney: “Disney Channel. All of the shows: Wizards of Waverly Place, Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Kim Possible… so many. High School Musical was really huge for me—that made me want to sing and dance and act. And my dream since I’ve been little has been to be in a Disney Channel Original Movie musical—the fact that this is happening is so surreal.

Central to the stories of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Rey has become an inspiration to a whole new generation of Star Wars fans.

Joining Chewbacca, Rey will visit with guests at the Light Side character experience throughout the summer, with Darth Vader and Kylo Ren encountering guests at the Dark Side area. So brush up on your Jedi skills and get those cameras (or mobile devices) ready…

Frozen on Broadway: Behind the Scenes at the Sitzprobe

If you read D23.com with any regularity, you know how truly excited we are for the debut of Disney Theatrical’s brand-new Broadway musical Frozen! So color us tickled to see this very cool behind-the-scenes video from the musical’s sitzprobe during its pre-Broadway run in Denver, Colorado. What’s a sitzprobe, you may ask? It’s the first time the cast of a musical gets to sing through the show with their live orchestra… and it’s definitely one of the most amazing days during a musical’s production process.

Based on the 2013 film written by a trio of Oscar® winners, Frozen on Broadway will feature music and lyrics by the creators of the film score—Kristen Anderson-Lopez (Up Here, Winnie the Pooh, In Transit) and EGOT (Emmy®, Grammy®, Oscar, and Tony®)-winner Robert Lopez (Avenue Q, The Book of Mormon, Up Here)—and a book by Jennifer Lee (Zootopia, Wreck-It Ralph), the film’s screenwriter and director (with Chris Buck). Directed by Michael Grandage, choreographed by Rob Ashford, and starring Broadway vets Caissie Levy as Elsa and Patti Murin as Anna, Frozen begins previews at the St. James Theatre on February 22!

Black Panther Soundtrack Debuts Online This Friday

Awesome news, Black Panther fans—the score to the extremely anticipated film will hit digital shelves on Friday, February 16!

Composed by Grammy®-nominated composer and songwriter Ludwig Göransson, the score album will be released by Marvel Music and Hollywood Records. Black Panther marks Göransson’s third collaboration with director Ryan Coogler (Creed, Fruitvale Station). The Swedish-born composer wrote the original songs for Creed and has also produced albums for music stars including Childish Gambino, Haim, and Chance the Rapper.

The score was recorded in London with a whopping 132-piece western classical orchestra, as well as African percussionists and a 40-person choir. “After reading Ryan’s first draft of the script, I quickly realized that the only way I could properly score Black Panther was to travel to Africa to record, research, and learn from as many musicians I could find,” Göransson recently said. “I was introduced to Senegal’s most incredible musicians and storytellers, and from there it all started to come together.”

You can already pre-order the Black Panther score on iTunes, and you can listen to the full soundtrack on Spotify right now!

Everything You Need to Know About the New Characters in Marvel Studios’ Black Panther

By Jim Frye

There’s a new king in town, and his name is T’Challa, better known as Black Panther. The groundbreaking Marvel Comics character made his first appearance in Fantastic Four Vol. 1 Issue 52, published in 1966. Then in 2016, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) welcomed Black Panther to the big screen in Captain America: Civil War. This February, he’s back in his own film with a whole new cast of characters.

black panther

Marvel Studios’ Black Panther follows T’Challa who, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to take his rightful place as king. But when a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king—and Black Panther—is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk.

Marvel Studios President and Black Panther Producer Kevin Feige says, “It’s great to be able to delve into the world of Wakanda, see Black Panther’s lineage and heritage, and meet these amazing, rich characters that surround him. To bring them to life, we put together a phenomenal cast. They are among the best that we’ve ever assembled.”

Here are some of the amazing cast members, to help get you ready for Black Panther, which releases in U.S. theaters on February 16.

CHADWICK BOSEMAN: T’Challa/Black Panther
Mourning the loss of his father, T’Challa’s claim to the throne is waylaid when villains outside the country pull him out of Wakanda and lead him on an adventure that spans the globe.

“T’Challa is smart. He’s a strategist and that has always been something that stood out to me, even in the comic books,” says Boseman. “He’s a world leader and with that comes the responsibility for an entire nation and considering its place in the world. That’s something that other Super Heroes don’t commonly have, but he must also uphold his legacy. It’s an interesting combination.”

MICHAEL B. JORDAN: Erik Killmonger
Erik Killmonger is a new foe to Wakanda with designs on the throne.

A longtime comic book fan, Jordan could not turn down the chance to work on the film. “I was very familiar with Black Panther,” he says. “As a kid I always wanted to be the Black Panther. Black Panther was a character that I always looked up to and admired my whole life, so it’s pretty amazing to get to be part of the story for the big screen.”

LUPITA NYONG’O: Nakia
Nakia is a War Dog, a Wakandan spy often imbedded in countries outside of Wakanda to observe and report back. She must decide whether she should be guided by her duty to her nation or her feelings for T’Challa.

Academy Award® winner Lupita Nyong’o was drawn to Black Panther by several different elements. “I had been wanting to work with Ryan Coogler, who I think is brilliant,” says Nyong’o, “in addition to wanting be a part of the MCU. And then the fact that this was going to be Marvel’s first black Super Hero, and that he is an African king, and the fact that we were going to be creating this really dope African country, and populate it with all sorts of badass African characters—it was a no-brainer, honestly.”

DANAI GURIRA: Okoye
Okoye is the head of the Dora Milaje, the all-female Wakandan Special Forces. She is the best fighter in Wakanda who is not named the Black Panther, and she is fiercely loyal to the throne.

“These women have pledged their lives to the throne and to the maintenance of the security of the kingdom and specifically of the throne,” says Gurira. “But my character, Okoye, is also the general of the armed forces as a whole and the head of Wakandan Intelligence.

LETITIA WRIGHT: Shuri
Shuri is T’Challa’s little sister and the smartest person in Wakanda—the top scientist and the innovator behind the Black Panther’s updated suits and technology.

“Shuri is someone who’s very innovative,” says Wright. “She takes care of the technology side of everything that’s going on in Wakanda. She designs exciting, cool things that we’re going to see in the film. Her brain is always working, and she’s always thinking of solutions to help her country and building gadgets and things like better armor.”

MARTIN FREEMAN: Everett K. Ross
A CIA agent who was last seen interrogating Zemo in Captain America: Civil War, Ross soon finds himself aligned with T’Challa against international forces threatening to destroy Wakanda.

“I like his authority,” says Freeman. “I like his status, actually. I like the fact that he doesn’t care about offending people. I think he doesn’t care about where his jurisdiction is because his jurisdiction is everywhere as far as he’s concerned.”

ANGELA BASSETT: Ramonda
Ramonda is T’Challa and Shuri’s mother. Her goal is to help T’Challa become King of Wakanda in a peaceful transition of power, serving as a de facto advisor to the throne.

“Ramonda’s a wife, and she’s a mother of a son whom she is immensely proud of, and of a young daughter Shuri,” says Bassett. “As a mother of a boy and a girl, I know that there are just different dynamics and tensions that play out between boys and girls and mothers and sons and mothers and daughters.”

FOREST WHITAKER: Zuri
Zuri is the spiritual leader of Wakanda. A good friend to former King T’Chaka, Zuri has become a mentor figure to T’Challa, bestowing his knowledge and wisdom onto the Black Panther.

For Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker, joining the Black Panther cast as Zuri was akin to a family reunion with director Ryan Coogler and Jordan, with whom he collaborated as a producer on Fruitvale Station.

ANDY SERKIS: Ulysses Klaue
Ulysses Klaue is an illegal arms dealer, smuggler, and gangster operating out of South Africa, whom we met in Avengers: Age of Ultron. He is after Wakanda’s vibranium.

“We do really honor the character of Ulysses Klaue and his brutal history with Wakanda,” says Serkis. “I wanted him to retain that anger and if there is any redeeming factor about Ulysses Klaue it is that he wants to expose their hypocrisy.”

Did You Know? 8 Incredible Facts About Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey

By Jim Fanning

Take one cat and two dogs who comically converse among themselves in human voices, separate them from their humans, and send them off on a perilous quest through the Sierra Nevadas to find their family, and you have Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey. This Disney hit, the popularity of which inspired a sequel in Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco (1996), is a remake of Walt Disney’s classic 1963 film The Incredible Journey. Released on February 12, 1993, this live-action comedy-adventure celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, so to fete the film and its two fidos, Shadow and Chance, and their feline friend, Sassy, here are some fascinating facts about this beloved Disney animal adventure.

The Incredible Journey

1. The Incredible Journey Began with a Book… and a Movie
The story of Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey starts with The Incredible Journey, a top-selling book by Sheila Burnford. The author based her novel about the unstoppable animal trio on her own pets. Her three animals were her constant companions in England during World War II, and the pets were themselves inseparable. “They were closer than any other dog and cat relationship I have ever seen,” she said of her English Bull Terrier and Siamese cat. “Sleeping in the same basket, hunting and playing together, they made a lawless pair.” Later, a young Labrador was added to the mix, and the pup guarded the older dog when the Bull Terrier’s eyesight began to fail. It was this remarkable animal-kingdom kinship that inspired the author to write The Incredible Journey. Less than a year after its publication in 1960, the book became an international bestseller. Walt Disney immediately saw that this extraordinary story would make a compelling film. Released in 1963, The Incredible Journey became an iconic Disney animal film.

2. Two Oscar® Winners Team Up
One of the primary differences between the original film and Homeward Bound is that the animals talk. Since audibly revealing the thoughts of the pets is integral to the story, the casting of the actors who could convey personality with their voices alone was crucial. Consequently, the Homeward Bound filmmakers cast Academy Award®-caliber talent. Two-time Oscar® winner (For Best Actress in Norma Rae (1979) and Places in the Heart (1984)), Sally Field performs the voice of Sassy, the sophisticated Himalayan feline. As for the voice of Shadow, Don Ameche was signed to vocalize the wise Golden Retriever. A movie star from Hollywood’s golden era, Ameche experienced a popularity resurgence when he won an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor for Cocoon (1985). Homeward Bound marked a return to Disney for Don as he had starred in the popular comedy The Boatniks (1970).

3. Fox Voices Dog
When Emmy Award-winning TV and movie star Michael J. Fox voiced Milo Thatch in Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001), animator John Pomeroy noted, “He was a virtuoso at the microphone, and he understood the situation and would improve it. He also improvised emotional nuances that weren’t in the script and made the character very sympathetic.” When Fox worked on Homeward Bound a few years earlier, he brought that same vocal skill to performing the voice of the enthusiastic American Bulldog pup, Chance.

4. The Animal Actors of Homeward Bound
Each of the animal actors portraying the three four-footed leads worked for up to seven weeks before shooting even began. Each responded to voice and sound commands, and each was rewarded for its performance not with movie-star perks, but with liver treats. The heart of Homeward Bound is of course the unusual bond between the three, which meant normal canine and feline conflict had to be dealt with. “There are certain restrictions to working with dogs and cats together,” said head dog trainer Gary “Sam” Vaughn. “But there are rewards, too. By nature, they don’t get along. But our animals spent so much time together that they have become very close. These animals developed affections for each other and the actors that come through on screen.” Added veteran animal coordinator and trainer Joe Camp, “This is the first time where you have animals, not just performing a behavior, but actually their behaviors interacted between each other. They’re in a sense communicating with their partner.”

5. Beauties and the Beasts
Homeward Bound has quite a Disney animation pedigree. Along with Donald W. Ernst, co-producer of Aladdin (1992), Kirk Wise, co-director of Beauty and the Beast (1991), served as executive producer. In that capacity, Wise supervised the writing and recording of the animals’ dialogue and was involved in casting the voice talents. Screenwriter Linda Woolverton came to Homeward Bound after penning the screenplay for Beauty and the Beast, while co-screenwriter Caroline Thompson also wrote Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, released in 1993, the same year as Homeward Bound.

6. Stand-In Pets and Supporting Players
Ben, Rattler, and Tiki, the main animals portraying Shadow, Chance, and Sassy, receive star billing in the film, but, in reality, Chance and Shadow were each played by four dogs, while Sassy was played by 10 cats. The additional animals were brought in to perform specialty actions or simply to give the lead animal performers a break. Other animals in the Homeward Bound cast include a mountain lion, an owl, black bears, a porcupine, and a skunk.

7. Chance, Sassy and Shadow’s Human Family
The first Incredible Journey film adaptation focused primarily on the animals’ journey, but this later version was expanded to examine the special bond between a child and his pet, especially as exemplified by Peter (Benj Thall) and his relationship with Shadow. “There is a magic between children and animals that adults can’t touch,” observed co-producer Mack Bing. “This magic was evident on and off screen. There’s an almost visible chemistry in that special relationship that makes this film work.” Producer Jeffrey Chernov added, “To me, the most important part of this movie is about family. The human characters don’t start out as a solid family, but they grow into one.” The animals’ family is named Burnford in honor of the original book’s author.

8. Incredible Journey, Incredible Scenery
Though the original book and movie took place in Ontario, Canada, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey is set in California as the pets’ trek takes them through the wilds of the Sierras. In reality the movie was filmed in Oregon. “Oregon is a popular site for filmmaking because of its varied topography,” location manager Mark C. Hughes said. ”In this film, we used parts of downtown Portland to substitute for San Francisco; eastern Oregon to serve as Bishop, California, and the Eagle Cap Wilderness area, which bears a striking resemblance to the Sierra Nevadas.” Filming took place from August through October 1991. Midway through the project, the film crew packed their cameras and equipment on mules and horses and rode more than 15 miles of protected wilderness areas into the Eagle Cap area in the Wallow Mountains for three days of filming in the forest. “My job was almost made easier by Mother Nature,” said production designer Roger Cain. “You look around to decide what needs to be done to the surroundings and realize that there’s no way you can improve on the grandeur of the scenery. I think that the audience will feel awed by how remote a journey these animals are on.”
