Take a Bite Out of the Big Apple with These 13 New York Disney Moments

By D23 Team

There’s something magical about a big city like New York City––which is probably why some of our favorite Disney moments take place in the Big Apple. Read on to see some of our favorite NYC moments from Disney films, shorts, and shows.

(P.S. Explore the city with D23 during our exciting event, D23’s Behind-the-Scenes Experience: Magic in Manhattan & More––click here for more details.)

Splash

Splash (1984)
This isn’t your ordinary mermaid tale… When a mysterious mermaid (Daryl Hannah) re-encounters a man (Tom Hanks) she saved as a young boy, she sets out to find him in New York City. Through a series of mermaid mishaps, Madison explores the city with her newfound friend and learns how to live on land, before she’s captured for examination.

James and the Giant Peach

James and the Giant Peach (1996)
A giant peach comes to the Big Apple in this live-action meets stop-motion animation film. James dreams of visiting the Empire State Building before the death of his parents, and his new bug buddies help him get there by way of this phenomenal fruit. James and his friends end up living in Central Park, in a house made from the peach pit.

The Cheetah Girls

The Cheetah Girls (2003)
Galleria, Chanel, Dorinda, and Aqua strut all over Manhattan in their quest for fame, but perhaps the most memorable New York moment comes in the film’s finale, when Galleria’s dog, Toto, is trapped underneath the streets of Manhattan. The Cheetah Girls’ singing saves the day and the fear of almost losing Toto brings the group back together.

Newsies

Newsies (1992)
This beloved musical about New York newsboys on strike danced into the hearts of Disney fans everywhere. The newsies may be a bunch of down-on-their-luck boys fighting for fair paper prices, but they all have big dreams of someday being the “King of New York.”

Olivier & company

Oliver & Company (1988)
“Once upon a time, in New York City…” An unbelievable cast (starring Billy Joel, Bette Midler, Joey Lawrence, and more) leads this unforgettable tale (or should we say tail…) of a lonely kitten who finds friendship in a pack of dogs. The 1988 film gives audiences a “dog’s-eye view” of NYC, particularly during the catchy musical number “Why Should I Worry?”

Johnny Fedora and Alice Bluebonnet

Johnny Fedora and Alice Bluebonnet—Make Mine Music (1946)
These star-crossed lovers first meet in the window of a New York deparment store, but soon Johnny Fedora travels from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Jersey Shore to find his true love, Alice Bluebonnet, once more.

Gargoyles

Gargoyles (1994)
Under a magical curse, the Gargoyles are forced to be frozen in stone until their castle “rises above the clouds.” Little did they know that relocating the Gargoyles to a New York skyscraper would break the curse and allow them to defend the night once again! Now the Gargoyles trade Scotland for New York City as they fight crime and save the day.

Fantasia 2000

Rhapsody in Blue—Fantasia/2000 (2000)
This dynamic look at the relationship between sound and sight features a whimsical segment set to the tune of George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” that takes place in the city of New York. Never has the faced-paced, diverse life of New York City been depicted so fluidly as in this jazzy segment. From the life of a construction worker to the trials of a young ballerina, the whole city comes to life in fabulous animation and sound!

Enchanted

Enchanted (2007)
The 2007 film takes viewers on an enchanting tour of New York, from Times Square to Central Park (who could forget “That’s How You Know”?).

Bolt

Bolt (2008)
Action hero Bolt only knew the Hollywood life of soundstages and special effects until a mix-up results in a one-way ticket to New York City. While Bolt must adjust to the life of a regular dog, he meets a great friend in a local cat, Mittens, who helps him learn how to be a regular dog and travel across America to find his beloved Penny.

The Avengers

The Avengers (2012)
We all know New York’s famous landmarks: The Statue of Liberty, The Empire State Building, Avenger’s Tower… In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, these Super-Heroes loom large over New York City, defending its citizens from the monstrous Chitauri and the tricks of Loki. While the Super-Heroes get off to a rocky start, by the time they are done saving the day they’ve learned to be a true team, moving in to the former Stark Tower and giving the Marvel Cinematic Universe one of its most iconic landmarks.

Paperman

Paperman (2012)
While the Walt Disney Animation Studios short may be about a real love letter, it’s also a love letter to New York City, as our hero and heroine travel the city by way of (very aggressive) snail mail.

New York Weenie (2013)
During a walk through Central Park, Minnie gets a hankering for a hot dog. Ever the gentleman, Mickey buys Minnie a weenie—which ends up slipping out of the bun and bouncing its way through Central Park. Mickey chases the dog through iconic Central Park spots before ultimately catching the slippery snack.

Celebrate 10 Years of Meet the Robinsons with These Walt Disney Quotes

By D23 Team

Today we are celebrating 10 years of the Disney animated film Meet the Robinsons. We love the movie for its forward-thinking adventures of the young inventor Lewis in the amazing world of the future! While Louis is marveling at the wonders of the future—or as the citizens of the future call it, “Todayland,”—everyone reminds him of one important thing: “Keep moving forward.” This mantra isn’t just good advice, but also a quote from Walt Disney himself!

In the spirit of Meet the Robinsons’ forward-looking ideals, we’ve made some sharables with our favorite Walt quotes that we think capture the spirit of the movie. Download your favorites, and share them with any of your friends who love Meet the Robinsons!

Wreck-It Ralph 2 logo

Break-ing News: Wreck-It Ralph 2 Debuts Full Title and New Logo

The Internet is a-buzz with some very exciting news to come out of CinemaCon (the official convention in Las Vegas for the National Association of Theatre Owners) last night: Wreck-It Ralph 2 has an official title, and a brand-new logo!

Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 will open in theaters on March 9, 2018, and—as you can take away from the title—the film follows Ralph as he goes on what’s sure to be some amazing adventures in the land of the Internet! We’ve only heard a few other tantalizing snippets of info about the film so far… chiefly, that John C. Reilly is back as the title character, and he’s joined once again by Sarah Silverman as Vanellope Von Schweetz.

Keep your eyes peeled (and your WiFi routers open) for more info as it becomes available.

New Behind-the-Scenes Look at Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

We’re (not-so-)patiently counting down the days ‘til the fifth installment in the Pirates adventure—Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales—sails into our local cineplex, and we were needing a little somethin’ to help tide us over… so color us thrilled about this brand-new, behind-the-scenes look at the film, above.

If you’ve been keeping track (like the good Pirates fans you are!), you know that Oscar® winner Javier Bardem joins the sea-worthy shenanigans as Captain Salazar, a sinister apparition bent on exacting revenge on Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp). You’ll hear from Javier in this new video—which also briefly introduces us to actors Brenton Thwaites and Kaya Scodelario, who play Henry Turner and Carina Smyth, respectively.

Don your tri-corner hat, gather up some rations, and mark your calendars: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales opens in theaters nationwide on May 26.

Spring-themed train overlay

Shanghai Disney Resort Launches New Spring-Themed Trains

Spring is bloomin’ all around the world, and our friends at Shanghai Disney Resort are getting into the spirit of things by launching four new spring-themed trains on Metro Line 11, along with the city’s subway operator, Shentong Group.

The trains are customized both inside and out with lovely decorations blending spring seasonal touches with classic Disney elements. Happen to be heading to Shanghai in the next few months? You’re in luck: With the recent launch of the new Shanghai Disneyland Spring Seasonal Pass, Metro passengers will also be able to scan a QR code printed on the interior of the train to purchase the new passes. (So convenient!) The new pass will be valid for multiple entries to the theme park by the same visitors from now through July 16.

Happy spring!

Created by comedian Harland Williams, Puppy Dog Pals follows two fun-loving pug brothers, Bingo (Issac Ryan Brown, black-ish) and Rolly (Sam Lavagnino, Miles from Tomorrowland), whose appetites take them on “paws-itively” thrilling adventures throughout their neighborhood—and around the world! Williams serves as a consulting producer and writer on the show, and voices the role of Bob, the pups’ devoted owner.

Recurring guest stars include musician Huey Lewis as Bulworth, the junkyard dog; Patrick Warburton (Family Guy) as Captain Dog, the star of the pups’ favorite television show; Jack McBrayer (30 Rock) as Hedgie the hedgehog; and Leslie David Baker (The Office) and Cheri Oteri (Saturday Night Live) as neighbors Frank and Esther Exposition.

Autopia

A Fresh New Look for Disneyland Park’s Autopia

It’s a fun new trip for a fan favorite! Our friends over at the Disney Parks Blog recently debuted some new photos of Autopia—the classic Disneyland Park attraction where so many of us got “behind the wheel” for the very first time. Featuring Honda’s amazing ASIMO (Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility) humanoid robot and its new friend Bird, Autopia now takes guests on a fabulous “road trip” that begins at a friendly campground.

Back in spring 2016, Autopia got a headstart on its refresh when its cars were repainted in cool Honda colors—and fuel-efficient Honda engines were installed under the hood. Take a spin through Autopia’s new story during your next visit to Disneyland Park!

Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jordan Fisher Take to the Streets with “You’re Welcome”

They may be residing in different countries (at least for the next few months), but that didn’t stop a recent collaboration between Oscar® nominee Lin-Manuel Miranda and singer/actor Jordan Fisher—who will soon be co-hosting this year’s Radio Disney Music Awards—for the music video for their Moana end-credits version of “You’re Welcome.”

Lin, who’s currently shooting Mary Poppins Returns in the United Kingdom, walked the streets of London for his portion of this fun new video, while Jordan took to the New York City streets… all before the two actually came together (for realsies) in a recording studio for the video’s big finale.

Check out the video, above. And, “you’re welcome.”

D23 Fab Five: Jenna Elfman’s Favorite Disney Movies

By Tim Lammers

Fifteen years after the conclusion of her sitcom Dharma and Greg, comedy great Jenna Elfman will celebrate her return to the ABC Primetime comedy lineup this spring with Imaginary Mary. In the series, Elfman stars as Alice, a successful ad executive whose imaginary childhood friend, Mary (voice of Rachel Dratch), turns up again in her life as she begins a relationship with a divorced father of three.

Imaginary Mary (sneak peek March 29 at 8:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. CT, Tuesdays starting April 4 at 9:30 p.m. ET/8:30 p.m. CT) is a combination of live-action and computer-animation, and Elfman is thrilled that previews have attracted a wide audience.

Imaginary Mary

“My kids love watching the show. I have two boys and they’re super-responsive to Mary,” Elfman says. “Also, women love the show and guys dig it. It’s a family show, but it has romance and has this CGI character. It has all these elements, and they all work together pretty well.”

Elfman’s love of both live-action and animation is reflected in her list of her Fab Five Disney Movies below.

The Incredibles

1. The Incredibles: “I love the spirit of that movie. It’s funny, and I feel that the female characters are strong and I like their family dynamic!”

Toy Story

2. Toy Story and 3. Toy Story 2: “I love everything about Toy Story! I love all the characters. I love the humor. I love the writing. I love the animation. I love the story. Just everything, everything, everything!”

The Jungle Book

4. The Jungle Book (1967): “This is the first movie I ever saw in a theater as a kid! And I remember being emotionally impacted by it and being surprised that a two-dimensional screen impacted me emotionally. I thought it peculiar and magical.”

Mary Poppins

5. Mary Poppins: “What’s not to love about Mary Poppins? The good-natured spirit, the music. This movie always makes me happy!”

Fan Favorites from Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival

By Nicole Nalty

Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival is in full swing, and there’s a lot to see, do, and, of course, eat! We ate our way through the festival (in every job that must be done, there is an element of fun!) and rounded up some of our favorites for every appetite.

Don’t forget––Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival features more than just marvelous marketplaces! You can experience culinary demonstrations, brewmaster and winemaker’s dinners, hang out with Goofy at Jr. Chef and Chip ‘n’ Dale at Jammin’ Chef, and catch live performances from local bands. The festival continues through April 16!

DCA Food and Wine Festival 2017
Dole® Pineapple-Strawberry Float with Vanilla Ice Cream and Strawberry Pearls (left) and Chicken Teriyaki Slider with Spicy Dole® Pineapple Jam (right)

If you’re looking for something sweet…

LA Style––This marketplace is located in Hollywood Land, near Monsters, Inc. Mike and Sulley to the Rescue! You can find sweet eats like the Chicken Teriyaki Slider with Spicy Dole® Pineapple Jam, and an indulgent (but refreshing) Dole® Pineapple-Strawberry Float with vanilla ice cream and strawberry pearls. Pair these two festival favorites together for a super sweet meal.
Sweet & Sourdough––A piece of Boudin sourdough bread is already a treat, but when combined with milk chocolate in a decadent bread pudding, it’s even sweeter. This was our favorite eat of the festival!
Lemon Grove––A tangy lemonade turns sweet with a cherry twist and cherry pearls.

DCA Food and Wine Festival 2017
Baby Iceberg and Heirloom Tomato Wedge with Peppered Bacon and Blue Cheese Dressing (left) and Smoked Bacon Mac and Cheese with Barbecue-seasoned Crispy Onions (right)

If you’re looking for something hearty…

Bacon Twist––This meaty marketplace is a hearty heaven! Enjoy mac and cheese piled with smoked bacon and barbecue-seasoned onions, and pair it with a baby iceberg and heirloom tomato wedge with peppered bacon and creamy blue cheese dressing. Still hungry? Try the Maple-Bacon whoopie pie.
The Onion Lair––Try the French Onion mac and cheese at The Onion Lair for a hearty vegetarian option. For meat lovers, the Braised wagyu beef falls apart on the fork and is complemented by creamy polenta and haricot verts.
Garlic Kissed––We loved everything at this marketplace highlighting Gilroy Garlic, but the grilled beef tenderloin slider with garlic chimichurri sauce will delight a bigger appetite.

If you’re feeling adventurous…

Garlic Kissed––Savory ice cream may seem out of the ordinary, but this Garlic-Rosemary and Avocado Oil Ice Cream Pop is a must-try for any foodie.

DCA Food and Wine Festival 2017
Warm Olive Focaccia with Olive Oil and Sea Salt (left) and Vanilla Bean Crème Fraîche Panna Cotta with Amarena Cherry Jus and EVOO Madeleine (right)

If you’re looking for a snack…

Nuts about Cheese––Three different cheese and nut dishes are available at this marketplace, but our favorite was the Brie Toast: topped with fig, mint, and roasted almond crumble, it’s a buttery-sweet snack.
Olive Us––There are few things more comforting than a warm piece of good bread, which you can find at the Olive Us marketplace. Baked with California olives, this roll is topped with olive oil and sea salt.

DCA Food and Wine Festival 2017
Verlasso® Sustainable Salmon Tataki with Avocado-wasabi Puree and Furikake Dust (bottom left), Mango Agua Fresca (top left), Cage-free Cream Cheese Deviled Eggs with Farm-raised Smoked Trout and Chives (bottom right), and Passion Fruit Posset and Coconut Chia with Mango Compote and Jelly (top right)

If you love seafood…

Seafood…Sustained––This marketplace has you covered. Try the sustainable salmon tataki and a fresh twist on deviled eggs—filled with cream cheese and topped with smoked trout.
Sweet & Sourdough––Two classics combine when a Bay Shrimp Louie Salad is served in a Mini Boudin boule.
Olive Us––Perfect for warm spring California days, a classic cioppino is served chilled (order the olive focaccia on the side!).

DCA Food and Wine Festival 2017
Roasted Sweet Corn Custard Tart with Honey Tuille and Smoked Chili-infused Chocolate Sauce (left), Jackfruit Carnitas Banh Mi Nachos with Cilantro Crèma and “Pickled” de Gallo (top), Sweet Corn Nuggets with Beef Chili, Spring Onions and Sour Cream (right)

If you’re a vegetarian…

I ♡ Artichokes––Each offering at this marketplace is vegetarian, but our favorite was the grilled and chilled artichoke hearts with a tangy romesco sauce.
Lemon Grove––Roasted cauliflower is served with a Meyer lemon-infused yogurt.
Off the Cob––Meatless nachos are taken to the next level with Jackfruit Banh Mi Nachos––this dish can be made vegan if you omit the sauce!
