From writing historic scripts for Walt Disney to leading the creative teams that brought Epcot to life, Marty Sklar has shared Walt’s spirit of optimism and happiness all over the world through his role in creating unique and groundbreaking Disney experiences. During his 53 years of service at The Walt Disney Company, Marty provided leadership for Disney Imagineers behind Walt Disney World Resort, Tokyo Disney Resort, Disneyland Paris, Hong Kong Disneyland, Disney Cruise Line, and beyond. When he was named a Disney Legend, it was hard to think of anyone more deserving.
On Friday, May 12, a limited number of D23 Gold Members will be treated to an intimate, three-course luncheon with Marty in the Whitehall Room, a private dining space inside Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa Convention Center. During this exclusive event, guests will spend time with Marty and learn about his legendary career with The Walt Disney Company.
Plus, a very limited number of tickets will be available for guests to dine with Marty at the Disney Legend Table.
Marty’s Disney journey began in June 1955, when he was recruited to create The Disneyland Times newspaper. He soon joined the Disneyland publicity and marketing staff, where he established the popular Vacationland magazine. In 1961, Marty joined WED Enterprises (now Walt Disney Imagineering) to help develop the four main Disney shows for the 1964-’65 New York World’s Fair, including Carousel of Progress, Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, the Magic Skyway, and It’s a Small World. He eventually found himself writing personal material for Walt Disney, whether for publications, television shows, or special film appearances—including the historic “EPCOT Film,” in which he translated Walt’s bold vision for an Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow.
By 1974, Marty was an Imagineering officer, leading concepts and planning for the development of EPCOT Center (now Epcot) at Walt Disney World Resort. Later, as Walt Disney Imagineering vice chairman and principal creative executive, Marty led the creative teams through growth and innovation, including new Disney theme parks, resorts, and other experiences all over the world. Although Marty retired on July 17, 2009, he continues to share Walt’s legacy through special events, articles, and books. Inducted as a Disney Legend in 2001, he is the only Disney cast member to participate in the opening of all 12 Disney theme parks around the world.
This one-of-a-kind event will also include an exclusive gift created just for you! In addition, please feel free to bring copies of Marty’s books for him to sign at the event—including the recent releases One Little Spark!: Mickey’s Ten Commandments and The Road to Imagineering (Disney Editions, 2015) and Dream It! Do It!: My Half-Century Creating Disney’s Magic Kingdoms (Disney Editions 2013), which are available in bookstores.
