10 Amazing D23 Expo Announcements From 10 Amazing Years

By Zach Johnson

As our excitement for this year’s D23 Expo grows by the day, let’s take a trip down memory lane and revisit some of the biggest announcements to ever come out of its 10-year history. From extraordinary expansions in the Disney Parks to a stellar slate of animated and live-action films, the D23 Expo has played host to some of the most talked about moments in recent memory. Rest assured, we’ve got plenty of surprises in store for this year’s celebration—but until the fun officially begins on August 23, join us in celebrating just a handful of highlights!

Expo moments

2009: The D23 Expo Is Born
Technically, the first major announcement was made months before the first D23 Expo even happened. The March 10 episode of ABC’s The View cut to Bob Iger, Chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, who was at the annual shareholders meeting. It was there that he announced the genesis of D23: The Official Disney Fan Club and revealed the inaugural D23 Expo would take place September 10-13, 2009, in Anaheim, California. “We have a fantastic legacy that started in 1923 and is based on timeless stories, beloved characters and unforgettable experiences, but it’s our fans who keep the spirit of Disney alive year after year, generation after generation,” Iger said. “D23 is our way of saying ‘thank you’ and celebrating our fans, who bring the magic of Disney to life every day in every corner of the world.”

Expo moments

2009: The Muppets Reconnect With Audiences
The Muppets made a surprise appearance on a smaller replica of Disneyland Resort’s Mark Twain Riverboat during the “Disney Movie Magic: Inside the Disney Studios” presentation. Kermit the Frog played the banjo on the upper deck, while Fozzie, Pepe, Gonzo, Miss Piggy, Animal, Janice, Floyd, Dr. Teeth, Zoot, Beaker, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, Scooter, Rizzo the Rat, Lew Zealand, Robin, the penguins, and the chickens joined him by singing “The Rainbow Connection” from the riverboat’s lower decks; Sweetums, meanwhile, stood beside the group. Following the concert, Statler and Waldorf appeared onstage and shouted, “We want Grumpy!”

The Muppets had a film in the works, tentatively titled The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made!. The project later evolved into the 2011 comedy The Muppets, co-starring Jason Segel.

Expo moments

2011: Fans Get a Peek Inside the Castle
Four months after ground was broken on the Shanghai Disney Resort site, fans were given a sneak preview of Enchanted Storybook Castle—nearly two years before construction began! “We’re really starting to define our vision for the property,” Bob Weiss, then the Executive Vice President of Walt Disney Imagineering, said while showing 3D renderings and concept art. He later added, “While most people see an empty tract of land and mud, we see a stunning resort with a wonderful new theme park, a huge lake, two resort hotels, and an extensive retail, dining, entertainment complex.” As guests who’ve visited the park can attest, Shanghai Disneyland Park Resort—which opened to the public in June 2016—was well worth the wait.

Expo moments

2011: Disney Princesses Celebrate a Crowning Achievement
After the voices of the Disney Princesses were inducted as Disney Legends, Linda Larkin, who provided the speaking voice for Jasmine in 1992’s Aladdin, introduced Paige O’Hara, who sang as Belle; Lea Salonga, who sang as Mulan; Anika Noni Rose, who sang as Tiana; and Jodi Benson, who sang as Ariel. After their solos, they gave fans the royal treatment by teaming up to perform “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes” from Disney’s 1950 animated classic Cinderella.

Other Disney Legends inducted in the Tom Bergeron-hosted ceremony included Barton “Bo” Boyd, Jim Henson, Regis Philbin, Ray Watson, Guy Williams, Bonita Wrather, and Jack Wrather.

Expo moments

2013: Arendelle’s Gates Open With a Musical Number
After being introduced as “one of the most amazing actresses and singers on the planet,” Idina Menzel appeared onstage to perform Elsa’s instantly iconic song “Let It Go” for the first time in public. As the award-winning talent later told D23, “It was fabulous to unveil the song! We’d been keeping it in for a long time. And I’m just so proud to have such an epic, anthemic song that symbolizes so much of what we feel.” She added that young women in particular “hold in what makes us most special and powerful, because we’re afraid to alienate people around us.”

Working with co-star Kristen Bell (voice of Anna) was a favorite memory, she added. “It’s been a dream, honestly, to be in a Disney animated movie and to have a character that sings,” she said. “To be in this movie in particular, that represents so much of what I believe in, is terrific.”

Expo moments

2013: A Ghost Finds a New Haunt
The Hatbox Ghost called The Haunted Mansion’s attic home when the attraction opened at Disneyland Park in 1969. His name was apt, as his head would disappear then re-appear inside his hatbox. Eventually, he vanished entirely—but 44 years later, as a D23 Expo exclusive, Walt Disney Imagineers transformed an A-100 Audio-Animatronics model into the Hatbox Ghost, giving him a much wider range of motion. A centerpiece of the Journey Into Imagineering Pavilion, it would be two years before the Hatbox Ghost came out to socialize again in the park.

Expo moments

2015: The Star Wars Universe Gets Bigger
Iger made waves throughout the galaxy when he announced to more than 7,500 fans that in just a few years, Star Wars-themed lands would be coming to Disneyland park in Anaheim, Calif., and at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. Spanning 14 acres each, the new lands promised to transport guests to a never-before-seen planet. “I am thrilled to announce the next chapter in the long and exciting history between Disney Parks and Star Wars,” Iger said. “We are creating a jaw-dropping new world that represents our largest single themed land expansion ever. These new lands at Disneyland and Walt Disney World will transport guests to a whole new Star Wars planet, including an epic Star Wars adventure that puts you in the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance.” (Read the latest on Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, opening May 31 in Anaheim and August 29 in Orlando.)

Expo moments

2015: The Toy Story Story Continues
Although Toy Story 4 was officially announced during an investor’s call in November 2014, it wasn’t until the 2015 D23 Expo that fans learned what filmmakers had in store. It was originally described as a “romantic comedy.” But what was originally conceived as a love story between Bo and Woody evolved into something else. (Essential elements from that screenplay remained after Josh Cooley was named sole director in 2017.) The presentation ended with Randy Newman performing “You Got a Friend in Me,” complete with green army men running drills onstage as characters like Bo Peep danced near the group.

Expo moments

2017: Avengers Assemble to Preview Infinity War
To promote Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War, a life-sized statue of Thanos, created by Legacy Effects, was put on display alongside sculptures of the Black Order’s Corvus Glaive, Proxima Midnight, Ebony Maw, and Cull Obsidian, giving fans a close-up look at the new villains. For the presentation, producer Kevin Feige, director Joe Russo, and actors Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Pom Klementieff, Karen Gillan, Dave Bautista, Anthony Mackie, Benedict Cumberbatch, Sebastian Stan, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman, and Don Cheadle introduced a clip highlighting 10 years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, along with never-before-seen footage from Avengers: Infinity War. The clip, which was screened exclusively for the panel, received an immediate standing ovation.

Expo moments

2017: Kingdom Hearts III Open the Pixar Toy Box
Disney and Square Enix debuted the first footage from Kingdom Hearts III, bringing PlayStation 4 and Xbox One gamers into the world of Pixar for the very first time. The highly anticipated trailer was Toy Story-themed and showed Sora, Donald Duck, and Goofy teaming up with Woody and Buzz Lightyear to take on the Heartless. The teaser also included a brief appearance from Organization XIII, the primary antagonists. With new worlds inspired by the Disney and Pixar films Big Hero 6, Frozen, Monsters, Inc., and more, the game was released two years later.

We can’t wait to see you in Anaheim for the Ultimate Disney Fan Event beginning August 23!

Peyton Elizabeth Lee to Star in Secret Society of Second Born Royals for Disney+

By Beth Deitchman

It’s a week for royal debuts: We’ve just learned that a new contemporary princess story is coming to Disney+. Production is now underway in Toronto on Secret Society of Second Born Royals, an original movie starring Peyton Elizabeth Lee.

Lee plays the rebellious princess Sam, who is second in line to the throne of the kingdom of Illyria but who couldn’t be less interested in royal life. Sam’s story takes an unexpected turn when she discovers she has emerging superpowers—and a chance to use them for good by joining a secret society dedicated to (covertly) keeping the peace throughout the land. How will Sam fare in the group’s top-secret training program? Who are her fellow second-born spares to the throne? And will they save the world? The answers to these burning questions (and more) will be found on Disney+ when Secret Society of Second Born Royals premieres.

Disney fans know Lee best as the title character in the Disney Channel series Andi Mack, for which she was recently nominated for a 2019 Kid’s Choice Award. She has also appeared on ABC’s Scandal and Showtime’s Shameless, voiced a role on Disney Junior’s The Lion Guard and been featured in several national commercials.

“We are big fans of Peyton and are thrilled that she and the rest of the cast will bring this exciting world to life for Disney+,” said Agnes Chu, senior vice president, Content, Disney+. “We love the themes of self-discovery and empowerment inside Secret Society of Second Born Royals, and our partners at Disney Channel are the perfect team to deliver this movie with adventure, humor and heart.”

“From the moment we first met Peyton, we knew she was special. It’s been an absolute joy to witness her growth as an actor over three seasons of Andi Mack. Her authenticity and confidence will seamlessly complement the talented ensemble cast that will bring this unique story to life,” said Judy Taylor, senior vice president, Casting and Talent Relations, Disney Channels.

It’s a dream destination of travelers from all over the world. And now, Adventures by Disney (ABD) is adding it to its already amazing tour lineup. Beginning in 2020, ABD will transport guests to Egypt—the storied land of pharaohs and pyramids—with the launch of an unforgettable family vacation itinerary… a three-part tour featuring adventures by Egyptian land, river, and sea.

But that’s not all… ABD also recently announced an expansion of its adult-exclusive departures. Perfect for groups of friends, couples, extended family, and adults traveling with their parents, this sophisticated, hassle-free new programming includes a culinary walking tour of Athens’ central market in Greece; a behind-the-scenes museum tour in Egypt; mango-carving and coffee-tasting activities in Laos; a search for the Northern Lights in Iceland; and so much more.

½ cup jicama, small diced, blanched
¼ cup celery, small diced, blanched
¼ cup carrots, small diced, blanched
2 teaspoons olive oil, divided
12 ounces king crab
Fresh chervil
Fresh chives
Vanilla aioli
Course salt, freshly ground black pepper
Jicama, peeled
1 ounce Siberian Osetra caviar, for garnish

White Balsamic Vinaigrette
1 teaspoon chopped shallot
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
¼ cup balsamic vinegar
½ cup extra virgin olive oil
Coarse salt, freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Pumpernickel Curl
12 small slices toasted pumpernickel, cut in triangles

Caviar Emulsion
Shallots
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
½ cup white balsamic vinegar
2 egg yolks
3/4 cup canola oil
3/4 cup olive oil
Coarse salt, freshly ground black pepper
½ ounce Desietra Osetra caviar

For Serving
12 matchstick pieces watermelon radish, for garnish
18 half-moon slices red radishes, for garnish
6 crystal lettuce leaves
6 petite mix lettuce leaves
6 baby frisée
18 micro chives
6 viola flowers (add after dressing)

Make Vanilla Aioli
Blend eggs, lemon juice, mustard, salt, and vanilla bean scrapings in food processor for 30 seconds. Slowly add oil until mixture is consistency of mayonnaise. Season to taste with salt, pepper, and paprika. Set aside.

Make Crab Cannelloni
Blanch vegetables separately in salted boiling water.  Cool in ice bath and drain. Lightly toss in 1 teaspoon olive oil. Mix crab with vegetables, chervil, and chives. Lightly dress with vanilla aioli; season to taste with salt and pepper. Slice jicama into paper-thin rounds with mandolin. Lightly dress with remaining 1 teaspoon olive oil. Place crab mixture in center of jicama and form into “cannellonis.” Cut on bias. Top with small spoonful of caviar.

Make White Balsamic Vinaigrette
Place shallots, mustard, and vinegar into a small bowl and slowly whisk in oil and season. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Set aside.

Make Pumpernickel Curl
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Cut crust off pumpernickel bread and roll out using pasta machine on low number (2 or 3) to flatten and thin. Bake 10 minutes, or until crisp.

Make Caviar Emulsion
Place shallots, mustard, white balsamic vinegar, and egg yolks in blender. Puree while slowly drizzling in oils to emulsify. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Gently stir in caviar just before swirling onto serving plate.

To serve
Just before serving, gently toss radishes, greens, and chives with white balsamic vinaigrette. Add viola flower. Place 1 cannelloni on each plate, then divide salad evenly among 6 plates. Add pumpernickel curls and a swirl of caviar emulsion. Serve immediately.

Serves 6.

4 Star Wars Things Happening That We Can’t Wait For in 2019

By Karina Schink

As all Star Wars fans know, May 4th is our unofficial holiday. While the big day only comes around once every year, this year it feels extra special because there’s so much Star Wars news to celebrate! In honor of 2019’s May 4th, here are some Star Wars things happening this year that we can’t wait to view, experience, and partake in!

We wish you a very happy May the 4th. And, of course, may the Force be with you, always.

The Mandalorian

The Mandalorian Debut

That ever-expanding galaxy feels closer and closer as the launch date for Disney+ edges near, bringing with it all-new original content such as The Mandalorian. The titular character is a mysterious figure donning that iconic helmet, his identity hidden behind a mask. We’ll have to wait several months for the series to debut, but thankfully, at this year’s Star Wars Celebration Chicago, we were able to witness an entire panel devoted to The Mandalorian panel and learn all about the exciting new show.

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge concept art

A force-filled immersive mobile experience at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

Did we mention that Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens this month at Disneyland Resort? Well, it does, and we are very, very excited—not only because we can’t wait to see a galaxy far, far away (up close!) but because Imagineers have crafted an environment where you get to live out your very own Star Wars adventure in that galaxy.  Upon arrival at Black Spire Outpost, you’ll be able to transform the Play Disney Parks app into your very own Datapad, which you can use to hack into droids, scan encrypted cargo, tune into transmissions, translate galactic languages and even help prepare the Millennium Falcon for hyperspace. You can explore these features when the new land opens on May 31, 2019, at Disneyland Resort and August 29, 2019, in Walt Disney World.

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge lightsabers

Building our very own lightsaber

As all would-be Jedi know, it takes more than the power of the force to assume that mantle. You need a lightsaber geared with your own kyber crystal, or course! At Savi’s Workshop in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge you’ll have the opportunity to build your own lightsaber and choose your own crystal. You can choose between the Peace Justice (modeled after Jedi from the Republic era), Power Control (a nod to the Sith), Elemental Nature (harnessing air, earth, fire, and water), and Defense (shrouded in mystery). Those are your options, now you just have one question to answer: light side or dark side?

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

2019 will draw to a close with a thrilling jump to light speed as Star Wars IX arrives in theaters. Our hearts skipped a beat when the film’s name was revealed at the recent Star Wars Celebration, along with a first trailer. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will land in theaters on December 20, 2019, and we all wish we could make it there in a mere 12 parsecs (or less!).

This coming Saturday happens to be May the 4th, the unofficial holiday when fans around the globe rejoice in all things Star Wars—so what better way to prepare for Galaxy’s Edge than to experience some special May the 4th celebrations at Disneyland park?

The Force will be especially strong inside Tomorrowland on May the 4th, as Hyperspace Mountain, the popular Star Wars-themed overlay to Space Mountain returns for a limited time. Plus, Captain Phasma and a small legion of Stormtroopers will make their way through Tomorrowland in a memorable display of the might of the First Order. Make sure to grab a friend and snap a picture at the special photo opportunity inside Starcade, and then fuel up with some Star Wars-inspired snacks at Galactic Grill and Alien Pizza Planet. And you can bring some of the May the 4th fun home with you via special novelty steins, sippers, popcorn buckets, T-shirts, hats, and limited-edition pins available at locations throughout the land.

May the 4th be with you!

Roundup Rodeo BBQ

BBQ Delights Coming Soon to Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

“Yeehaw!” Are you ready to wrassle up some delicious vittles? Well, there’s a brand-new restaurant coming soon to Walt Disney World Resort, and we can’t wait to dig in.

The new Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant, inside Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, will offer guests an immersive, family-friendly dining location that could only be seen in the middle of Andy’s backyard. Upon entering Toy Story Land, guests have already been magically transformed to the size of a toy—and this new restaurant continues that adventure. It’s Andy’s latest play area: a rodeo arena made using three cardboard boxes cut and taped together. While some of the pieces inside are definitely western-themed, what makes this rodeo super special is the huge assortment of toys that have been brought together to create a colorful mashup-style atmosphere that only a child could imagine!

Once inside the restaurant, guests will be surrounded by all manner of rodeo festivities, as well as western town and train station play sets. And you might just spot a few of your favorite Disney•Pixar characters scattered throughout, in the form of toys and game pieces—including a toy version of Jessie riding on the back of a Trixie pull-toy, and unique toy versions of Bo Peep and her sheep.

Stay tuned for more info about Roundup Rodeo BBQ in the weeks and months to come…

Join the #FriendLikeMe Challenge in Celebration of Disney’s Aladdin

Just this week, in celebration of World Wish Day®, The Walt Disney Company has once again partnered with the incredible folks at Make-A-Wish® to launch the #FriendLikeMe Challenge—a global campaign in honor of Disney’s upcoming live-action Aladdin, debuting in theaters around the country on May 24.

With an assist from Aladdin star Will Smith (who, like Disney, has been a longtime Make-A-Wish wish granter), the #FriendLikeMe Challenge encourages fans to join the campaign and help show the world: Where there’s a wish there’s a way. To participate, tag a friend on Twitter and/or Instagram in a public post, hashtagged with #FriendLikeMe. For each one of those posts, from now through May 24, Disney will donate $5—up to $1 million!—to Make-A-Wish to help grant life-changing wishes to children battling critical illnesses all over the world.

Check out Will’s video, kicking of the #FriendLikeMe Challenge, above—and make sure to join in the fun with a post on your own social accounts! For more information, visit FriendLikeMe.org.
