The Legends of NASCAR Rev Up Cars 3

Cars 3 is going to be legendary!

Nobody does nostalgia like Pixar! First, they made us miss our childhood toys in Toy Story. Then they brought back fond (and frightful!) memories of growing up in Monsters Inc.; and they took us through a lifetime of love in Up. But it’s through Cars that they captured our love for small towns, afternoon drives, and “getting off the highway” to enjoy the journey.

Now, Cars 3 pulls those nostalgic heartstrings even more as Lightning McQueen meets up with The Legends of racing (literally!) with cars from the glory days of the sport. And to help make these animated legends resonate with audiences, Pixar based each of the characters on actual, real-world racers from the early days of racing—true legends.

Here’s the setup: As Lightning McQueen struggles to get back on top, he meets a group of characters who represent the roots of stock car racing—and provide a link to Lightning’s late coach and mentor, Doc Hudson. To really hone in on who these characters should be, members of the story team went to NASCAR’s Daytona 500 to soak up the atmosphere. “We found a wealth of information there that gave us a springboard to find these characters,” says screenwriter Mike Rich. “They show Lightning that racing can be a lifetime thing. It might change over time, but you adapt and learn to race differently. The love of racing has never left these legends.”

SMOKEY

The character of former Piston Cup team owner Smokey (voiced by Chris Cooper) was inspired by real-life legend Henry “Smokey” Yunick. A racer and designer in NASCAR’s early days, Yunick was best known as a mechanic, builder, and crew chief. He was twice named NASCAR mechanic of the year, and his teams won 57 NASCAR Cup Series races, including two championships in the early 1950s. Smokey’s Best Damn Garage in Town was an infamous part of Daytona Beach for four decades.

JUNIOR “MIDNIGHT” MOON

NASCAR legend Robert Glenn “Junior” Johnson both inspired and lends his voice to the character Junior “Midnight” Moon. Johnson, who won 50 NASCAR races in the 1950s and 1960s, got his start in an unconventional way—making moonshine runs for his family business throughout the mountains of eastern North Carolina. The recipe was later shared with Piedmont Distillers and is sold under the label Junior Johnson’s Midnight Moon.

LOUISE “BARNSTORMER” NASH

The character Louise “Barnstormer” Nash (voiced by Margo Martindale) is based on the “First Lady of Racing,” Louise Smith. The gutsy Nash didn’t have an easy start as one of the first and only females in racing. She wasn’t provided a racing number, so she had to steal one to compete in her first race. But her fearless driving style soon won her the respect of every car she raced. In Cars 3, Nash took on the Fabulous Hudson Hornet in the early days of the Piston Cup, winning three back-to-back races. The real-life Louise Smith refused to just sit on the sidelines. Instead, she entered NASCAR—but ultimately rolled her family’s new Ford coupe in her first race. She went on to win 38 races during her seven-year career.

RIVER SCOTT

The character River Scott (voiced by Isiah Whitlock Jr.) was inspired by NASCAR’s Wendell Scott. In 1963, Wendell became the first African-American driver to win the Grand National Series at Jacksonville’s Speedway Park. He was posthumously inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2015.

In addition to these racing legends, Pixar filmmakers infused Cars 3 with extra horsepower by recruiting a number of actual NASCAR greats. “We all love a good story,” says co-producer Andrea Warren. “We were so lucky to get to hear their stories, get a taste of what happens behind the scenes of racing. That connection really comes through in the way many of our characters interact.”

Chase Elliott provides the voice of Chase Racelott, Ryan Blaney voices Ryan “Inside” Laney, Daniel Suárez lends his voice to Danny Swervez, and Bubba Wallace voices Bubba Wheelhouse. Jeff Gordon is the voice of Jeff Gorvette, Richard Petty once again voices Strip “The King” Weathers, Kyle Petty steps in as the voice of Cal Weathers, and Ray Evernham lends his voice to Ray Reverham. FOX’s Darrell Waltrip returns as the voice of Darrell Cartrip, the network’s Shannon Spake provides the voice of Shannon Spokes, Humpy Wheeler returns as the voice of Tex Dinoco, and FOX Sports’ Mike Joy provides the voice of Mike Joyride.

Cars 3 races into theaters June 16.

Mark Your Calendars—Big Studio Releases are On Their Way!

Are you ready to let it go over some out-of-this-galaxy news that makes you want to roar?

The Walt Disney Studios has just updated its release schedule—which means it’s time for Disney fans to update their calendars!

Some release dates are simply worth melting for… Frozen 2 has been scheduled to open on November 27, 2019. Development of the sequel to the blockbuster film from Walt Disney Animation Studios was announced in March 2015, with the Oscar®-winning team of directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee and producer Peter Del Vecho returning to continue the adventures of the characters fans first fell in love with in 2012.

Lightspeed to May 24, 2019—the date on which Star Wars: Episode IX is now slated to open! Colin Trevorrow is directing the film that concludes the third trilogy of Star Wars movies that began with the 2015 opening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And if that date feels far, far away, fear not, for Star Wars: The Last Jedi is coming to a theater near you on December 15, 2017, and 2018 brings the untitled Han Solo Star Wars Story on May 25.

The Lion King, directed by Jon Favreau, will open in theaters on July 19, 2019. Actor James Earl Jones is reprising the role of Mufasa in the live-action reimagining of the Disney animated classic, and Donald Glover is voicing the adult Simba in the new film. The savanna and its amazing inhabitants will come to photorealistic life through technology that builds upon the innovative filmmaking audiences loved in Favreau’s adaptation of The Jungle Book.

Of course, those aren’t the only opening dates you’re going to want to circle in red. Take a look at this list for 2017 and 2018—and set those calendar alerts. There’s a lot of popcorn in your not-too-distant future, and there’s always room for surprises, too! Stay tuned to D23 for all of the updates about these films, and more to come in the future.

Discover Which Guardian of the Galaxy are You in this Out-of-this-World Quiz
You are: Star-Lord

You got Star-Lord? Awesome, that makes you the coolest dude around! You have the best taste in music, the best dance moves, and the best nickname ever. Everyone is in awe of what a cool and definitely well-known Legendary Outlaw you are. Sometimes you might feel like an outcast, or even like you’re worlds away from your home planet, but you always manage to find the coolest heroes in the Galaxy to jam with.
You are: Gamora

Like Gamora, you’ve let the years toughen you up. You might have had a troubled childhood—perhaps you were trained as an assassin by the most powerful being in the galaxy… or maybe you just got detention a lot in school. Same difference, right? You’re focused on leaving your past behind and helping those who cannot help themselves. Your determined nature is unmatched, but you have a softer side that you reserve for those who earn it.
You are: Drax the Destroyer

Your superhuman strength is only matched by your super loyalty to your family. You are single-minded in mission, but often get distracted by the little things. Others may perceive you as goofy or silly, but they should be careful to not underestimate you. You’re strong enough to face any threat you encounter.
You are: Rocket Raccoon

You know exactly what your focus in life is: money, explosions, and a good time. You may consider yourself an outcast, but it’s OK, because you have a best friend you can always rely on. They can be the brawn because then that makes you the brains: You’re brilliantly creative, always quick with a witty remark, and hungry for the next adventure. You’re one of a kind.
You are: Groot

You might not have a lot to say, but you always leave a big impact on the world around you. You form close friendships and appreciate the simple things in life. You care less about the glamour of an adventurous life and more about making sure those adventurers in your life stay safe. You are Groot.

Born in China Honors a Legacy that Began with Walt Disney

By Beth Deitchman

An over-protective panda and her first-born, spirited cub, determined to express her independence… A young golden monkey, navigating a new family dynamic following the birth of his baby sister… A courageous snow leopard struggling for her family’s survival in one of the harshest, most unforgiving environments on Earth. These are the stories that are told in Disneynature’s Born in China—opening in theaters this Friday—and, producer Roy Conli tells D23, are the stories the animals gave to the filmmakers. “Anyone who owns a dog knows that animals have their own personalities, and as you track these amazing creatures [during Born in China], you understand that they each have a personality of their own. They have a life force that’s driving them, and they have relationships within their family and in structures outside the family that are pretty magic,” he says, adding, “The footage is a gift that you’re able then to present to the world in an entertaining, exciting and, hopefully, educational way, as well.”

Roy Conli

Born in China is directed by acclaimed Chinese filmmaker Lu Chuan (The Last Supper, Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe), who Conli refers to as “a master storyteller.” Lu Chuan had to approach the incredible true stories of the animals in Born in China a bit differently than the other films he’s directed. “For a feature film, you use your imagination and create everything from a blank page,” he says. “Disneynature films are character-driven stories, but the characters are the animals. So the story comes from the footage and is inspired by the lives these animals lead.”

Born in China

The film chronicles a year in the lives of these very different animals and presents their stories in compelling, emotional, and, above all, very relatable ways. Ya Ya the panda is a first-time mom, trying to balance her daughter Mei Mei’s first steps toward independence with her own maternal instincts to keep the young panda close and safe. Tao Tao, a young golden monkey, feels like a second-class citizen in his family after his parents welcome a baby sister. Dawa, a snow leopard mother, braves the elements and dangerous predators to provide for her cubs in a challenging terrain. “Each story depicts a reality of life that is reflective of our own human experience,” Conli says. “It’s compelling to see how animals share certain values that we hold dear.”

Born in China

Conli, a longtime producer at Walt Disney Animation Studios, has been involved with some pretty amazing animated stories, including Tangled and Big Hero 6, and he talked about the differences in bringing real emotion to the big screen in an animated tale versus a True Life Adventure. “[In animation,] you start from scratch—it’s whole cloth. You start crafting a script, moving forward, doing designs. Next thing you know, you start screening it and you eventually animate it and then it’s there,” he explains. “With [Born in China], we’re actually handed footage with massive amounts of journaling, with massive amounts of story that actually happened on location, and now we need to go in and compile that in a way that reflects what the True Life Adventure was.

“You don’t have to look for the story—the animals give that to you,” Conli notes.

Born in China

Disney films have entertained audiences with real stories about real animals since the 1948 release of Seal Island, the first of Walt’s 13 True-Life Adventures, and the films from Disneynature continue that legacy—as well as the legacy of conservation here at Disney. Through donations tied to opening week attendance, Disneynature supports environmental initiatives connected to their films. Moviegoers who see Born in China during its opening week (from April 21–27) can help support the World Wildlife Fund’s efforts to help protect wild pandas and snow leopards.

Conli is honored to part of a tradition that dates back to Walt. “I think that one of the reasons I was interested in being part of Born in China was that legacy,” he shares. “I’m very lucky, in the sense that I work in animation and now being able to work in nature filmmaking—it’s like the best of all Disney.”

What You Need To Know Before You See Marvel Studios’ Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2

By Jim Frye

The biggest, wildest, flying-by-the-seat-of-your-galactic-pants ride of the summer is about to storm theaters May 5, as Star-Lord, played by Chris Pratt, and his band of happy interstellar heroes return in director James Gunn’s hotly anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Star- Lord, aka, Peter Quill, has his portable cassette player and is ready to jam with even more groovy ’70s and ’80s tunes while fighting giant, slimy space aliens and getting into even more action-packed situations. And it’s all infused with Guardians’ (Gunn’s) now-signature humor. We promise, it’s the most fun you’ll have this summer trying to save the galaxy.

And even though Marvel is now many films into its ever-expanding Cinematic Universe—with the Avengers fighting a personal war amongst themselves on earth and Thor getting a haircut and fighting Hulk on the planet Sakaar (this November!)—don’t worry about going into Guardians unarmed. You don’t need to be an expert in all the intricacies of the Marvel Universe to understand and enjoy this newest film. That said, if you do want to catch up and get your bearings before heading to the theater, we’ve got you covered.

Here, we have put together a list of everything you need to know before seeing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. If you want to get completely up-to-speed, we suggest re-watching the original Guardians of the Galaxy (you won’t regret it!). It’s arrival in 2014 surprised and delighted audiences, and introduced the world (galaxy) to Peter Quill and his teammates: Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper), and Yondu (Michael Rooker). Joining them in Vol. 2 are Nebula (Karen Gillan), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), and Ego (Disney Legend Kurt Russell).

Peter Quill from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Where did Peter Quill / Star-Lord come from?
Central to the Guardians story is Peter Quill (pictured above). Long before he ever became Star-Lord, he was a young boy on Earth whose mother passed away after giving him a mix-tape of her favorite music. Peter’s father, however, was nowhere to be seen. That’s when blue-skinned Yondu arrived in a spaceship and scooped up young Peter and took him across the universe. Peter’s never been back, keeping in touch with his earthly heritage (and family memories) through that mix-tape and his trusty portable cassette player.

Ego from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Family connections
The Guardians’ second round of saving the galaxy seems to be all about family. And what a family tree! But somewhere in those tangled branches, there are a few family connections you should be aware of: First, there’s the issue of Peter’s dad. Whereas he never knew his biological father, he was raised by Yondu as part of a group called the Ravagers—not quite a child-friendly upbringing, to say the least. In one of the trailers, we see the brand-new character Ego (Kurt Russell, pictured above), who arrives and announces that he is Peter’s father. That should be interesting!

Gamora and Nebula from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

And speaking of fathers, there’s one big, bad daddy that needs to be called out—Thanos! That’s right, the stony purple villain who haunts the end credits of many of Marvel’s films since the first Avengers is the “father” of two characters in Guardians: green-skinned Gamora (picture above left) and her “twisted sister,” the blue-skinned Nebula (pictured above right). They are the definition of dysfunctional. But can you blame them? With a dad who wants to kill, maim and destroy half the galaxy, what do you expect the kids to be like?

Baby Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Why is Groot a baby?
There’s one character who steals every scene he’s in, and that’s Groot (pictured above), the alien who looks like a tree… a baby tree, that is. And that’s because in the last film [count this as your spoiler warning if you haven’t seen it], the then-adult Groot saved his friends from a terrible fate by sacrificing himself. But thankfully,  after Rocket gathered some of his splinters, he was able to sprout back up, basically starting all over again as a baby. Although the last film saw him dancing in a flower pot (his baby crib), he’s now able to walk. And wave. And look darn cute.

Thanos

The Infinity Stones
Throughout many of the previous Marvel films since the first Avengers, Thanos (pictured above) has been busy seeking what are known as the Infinity Stones, immensely powerful objects that gain even more strength once they’re joined together. He hopes to gather all the stones into his Infinity Gauntlet, making him the most powerful villain yet. Loki’s scepter had one in its tip in the Avengers before ending up on the forehead of Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron. The Tesseract, which was stolen by Red Skull in Captain America: The First Avenger, is one. And Star-Lord found one of the stones encased in an orb in the first Guardians film. Interestingly, he survived directly touching the stone, which should have killed him. It remains to be seen what Thanos wants with these stones, and if any of the heroes can stop him.

As far as things you should know before seeing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, that about covers it. Except for the fact that toward the end of the first Guardians film, our heroes—as combative and argumentative as they are—decided to stick together, help each other, and stave off galactic threats. A galactic, crime-fighting family, of sorts. On May 5, we’ll see how those family bonds are holding up. And it’s all set to the early ’70s-tastic soundtrack of Peter’s second mix-tape, gifted to him by his mother before her death.

Oh! One more thing – it goes without saying: sit through the credits. All the way to the end. You’ll be glad you did.

Walt’s First True-Life Adventure Began with an Unlikely Question

By Beth Deitchman

“How about seals?”

This was the wire sent to Walt Disney by Alfred Milotte in the early 1940s. Walt had contracted Al and his wife, Elma, to shoot film in Alaska for a planned documentary—an early foray for the Company into stories about real people and places, which Walt hoped would have guests leaving the cinema with knowledge they might not have had before. The Milottes’ initial footage featured what Al referred to as “everything that moved”—fisherman, loggers, railroad workers and more. But Walt was bored by what he initially saw and urged the Milottes to capture more wildlife on film, leading to Al’s fateful question. The creatures’ on-screen antics captivated Walt, who replied in his own wire back to Al, “More seals.”

Seal Island poster

When it came time to edit the extensive footage, Walt instructed producer Ben Sharpsteen to focus solely on the seals, without regard to running time—a decision that was confirmed for Walt after a trip to Alaska, accompanied by his 11-year-old daughter Sharon, to see the breathtaking setting and the charming creatures in real life. One year later, Seal Island would be ready for release.

The Disney’s distributor, RKO, balked at the thought of releasing a documentary that, at 28 minutes, was too long for a short and too short for a feature. Roy also told Walt, “They all say, ‘Who wants to watch seals playing house on a bare rock?’”

Seal Island premiere

Thanks to a friend who owned the Crown Theater in Pasadena, California, and screened the film for a week in December 1948, Walt proved that there was an audience eager for nature films. The run also qualified Seal Island for Academy Award® consideration for Documentary Short Subject. It would go on to win the Oscar®—and RKO would enthusiastically distribute more of Walt’s True-Life Adventures, as these nature films would be called.

Seal Island premiere

On April 21, Disney will release its latest True-Life Adventure, Born in China, through The Walt Disney Studios’ Disneynature label, which launched in 2008 to bring together the world’s top nature filmmakers to capture a variety of wildlife subjects and stories. The new films continue the legacy established with Seal Island and by Walt, who said, “These films have demonstrated that facts can be as fascinating as fiction, truth as beguiling as myth, and have opened the eyes of young and old to the beauties of the outdoor world and aroused their desire to conserve priceless natural assets.”
