Every Disney Movie We Can’t Wait to See Through 2027

By Zach Johnson

After kicking off with the record-setting success of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame, The Walt Disney Studios’ 2019 summer slate continues with Disney’s Aladdin May 24, Fox’s Dark Phoenix June 7, Pixar’s Toy Story 4 June 21, Fox’s Stuber July 12, and Disney’s The Lion King July 19. Fox 2000’s The Art of Racing in the Rain moves up to August 9, and Fox Searchlight’s Ready or Not will be released August 23.

The Studios’ 2019 slate rounds out with Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil October 18, followed by Fox’s Ford V. Ferrari November 15, Disney Animation’s Frozen 2 November 22, Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker December 20, and Blue Sky Studios’ Spies in Disguise, moving from September 13 to Christmas. Early 2020 titles include Fox’s Underwater January 10 and The Call of the Wild February 21, followed by Pixar’s Onward March 6. In 2021, Disney Animation’s Raya and the Last Dragon will open in March and Fox’s West Side Story adaptation, directed by Steven Spielberg, will open in December.

The updated calendar also sets release dates for major franchises Avatar and Star Wars. With Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker bringing the original Skywalker Saga to its conclusion in 2019, three new as-yet-untitled Star Wars films will release on the pre-Christmas weekend every other year beginning in 2023. Four more Avatar films, expanding the vibrant world of Pandora, will be released on the pre-Christmas weekend every other year beginning in 2022.

“We’re excited to put in place a robust and diverse slate that lays the foundation of our long-term strategy, bringing together a breadth of films from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, Fox, Fox Searchlight, and Blue Sky Studios to create an extraordinary collection of cinematic experiences for audiences around the world,” said Cathleen Taff, President, Theatrical Distribution, Franchise Management, and Business & Audience Insights, The Walt Disney Studios. “With a strong summer already in place, we are eager to carry that momentum forward over the coming years thanks to a creative wellspring of bold and imaginative stories coming from our world-class studios—including several new chapters of two revered franchises, Avatar and Star Wars.”

White Balsamic Vinaigrette
1 teaspoon chopped shallot
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
¼ cup balsamic vinegar
½ cup extra virgin olive oil
Coarse salt, freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Pumpernickel Curl
12 small slices toasted pumpernickel, cut in triangles

Caviar Emulsion
Shallots
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
½ cup white balsamic vinegar
2 egg yolks
3/4 cup canola oil
3/4 cup olive oil
Coarse salt, freshly ground black pepper
½ ounce Desietra Osetra caviar

For Serving
12 matchstick pieces watermelon radish, for garnish
18 half-moon slices red radishes, for garnish
6 crystal lettuce leaves
6 petite mix lettuce leaves
6 baby frisée
18 micro chives
6 viola flowers (add after dressing)

Make Vanilla Aioli
Blend eggs, lemon juice, mustard, salt, and vanilla bean scrapings in food processor for 30 seconds. Slowly add oil until mixture is consistency of mayonnaise. Season to taste with salt, pepper, and paprika. Set aside.

Make Crab Cannelloni
Blanch vegetables separately in salted boiling water.  Cool in ice bath and drain. Lightly toss in 1 teaspoon olive oil. Mix crab with vegetables, chervil, and chives. Lightly dress with vanilla aioli; season to taste with salt and pepper. Slice jicama into paper-thin rounds with mandolin. Lightly dress with remaining 1 teaspoon olive oil. Place crab mixture in center of jicama and form into “cannellonis.” Cut on bias. Top with small spoonful of caviar.

Make White Balsamic Vinaigrette
Place shallots, mustard, and vinegar into a small bowl and slowly whisk in oil and season. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Set aside.

Make Pumpernickel Curl
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Cut crust off pumpernickel bread and roll out using pasta machine on low number (2 or 3) to flatten and thin. Bake 10 minutes, or until crisp.

Make Caviar Emulsion
Place shallots, mustard, white balsamic vinegar, and egg yolks in blender. Puree while slowly drizzling in oils to emulsify. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Gently stir in caviar just before swirling onto serving plate.

To serve
Just before serving, gently toss radishes, greens, and chives with white balsamic vinaigrette. Add viola flower. Place 1 cannelloni on each plate, then divide salad evenly among 6 plates. Add pumpernickel curls and a swirl of caviar emulsion. Serve immediately.

4 Star Wars Things Happening That We Can’t Wait For in 2019

By Karina Schink

As all Star Wars fans know, May 4th is our unofficial holiday. While the big day only comes around once every year, this year it feels extra special because there’s so much Star Wars news to celebrate! In honor of 2019’s May 4th, here are some Star Wars things happening this year that we can’t wait to view, experience, and partake in!

We wish you a very happy May the 4th. And, of course, may the Force be with you, always.

The Mandalorian

The Mandalorian Debut

That ever-expanding galaxy feels closer and closer as the launch date for Disney+ edges near, bringing with it all-new original content such as The Mandalorian. The titular character is a mysterious figure donning that iconic helmet, his identity hidden behind a mask. We’ll have to wait several months for the series to debut, but thankfully, at this year’s Star Wars Celebration Chicago, we were able to witness an entire panel devoted to The Mandalorian panel and learn all about the exciting new show.

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge concept art

A force-filled immersive mobile experience at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

Did we mention that Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens this month at Disneyland Resort? Well, it does, and we are very, very excited—not only because we can’t wait to see a galaxy far, far away (up close!) but because Imagineers have crafted an environment where you get to live out your very own Star Wars adventure in that galaxy.  Upon arrival at Black Spire Outpost, you’ll be able to transform the Play Disney Parks app into your very own Datapad, which you can use to hack into droids, scan encrypted cargo, tune into transmissions, translate galactic languages and even help prepare the Millennium Falcon for hyperspace. You can explore these features when the new land opens on May 31, 2019, at Disneyland Resort and August 29, 2019, in Walt Disney World.

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge lightsabers

Building our very own lightsaber

As all would-be Jedi know, it takes more than the power of the force to assume that mantle. You need a lightsaber geared with your own kyber crystal, or course! At Savi’s Workshop in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge you’ll have the opportunity to build your own lightsaber and choose your own crystal. You can choose between the Peace Justice (modeled after Jedi from the Republic era), Power Control (a nod to the Sith), Elemental Nature (harnessing air, earth, fire, and water), and Defense (shrouded in mystery). Those are your options, now you just have one question to answer: light side or dark side?

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

2019 will draw to a close with a thrilling jump to light speed as Star Wars IX arrives in theaters. Our hearts skipped a beat when the film’s name was revealed at the recent Star Wars Celebration, along with a first trailer. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will land in theaters on December 20, 2019, and we all wish we could make it there in a mere 12 parsecs (or less!).

The Force will be especially strong inside Tomorrowland on May the 4th, as Hyperspace Mountain, the popular Star Wars-themed overlay to Space Mountain returns for a limited time. Plus, Captain Phasma and a small legion of Stormtroopers will make their way through Tomorrowland in a memorable display of the might of the First Order. Make sure to grab a friend and snap a picture at the special photo opportunity inside Starcade, and then fuel up with some Star Wars-inspired snacks at Galactic Grill and Alien Pizza Planet. And you can bring some of the May the 4th fun home with you via special novelty steins, sippers, popcorn buckets, T-shirts, hats, and limited-edition pins available at locations throughout the land.

Roundup Rodeo BBQ

BBQ Delights Coming Soon to Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

“Yeehaw!” Are you ready to wrassle up some delicious vittles? Well, there’s a brand-new restaurant coming soon to Walt Disney World Resort, and we can’t wait to dig in.

The new Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant, inside Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, will offer guests an immersive, family-friendly dining location that could only be seen in the middle of Andy’s backyard. Upon entering Toy Story Land, guests have already been magically transformed to the size of a toy—and this new restaurant continues that adventure. It’s Andy’s latest play area: a rodeo arena made using three cardboard boxes cut and taped together. While some of the pieces inside are definitely western-themed, what makes this rodeo super special is the huge assortment of toys that have been brought together to create a colorful mashup-style atmosphere that only a child could imagine!

Once inside the restaurant, guests will be surrounded by all manner of rodeo festivities, as well as western town and train station play sets. And you might just spot a few of your favorite Disney•Pixar characters scattered throughout, in the form of toys and game pieces—including a toy version of Jessie riding on the back of a Trixie pull-toy, and unique toy versions of Bo Peep and her sheep.

Stay tuned for more info about Roundup Rodeo BBQ in the weeks and months to come…

30 Reasons to Celebrate 30 Years of Disney’s Hollywood Studios

By the D23 Team

Where’s the one place you can go to experience fine dining in the golden age of Hollywood, meet intergalactic heroes from a galaxy far, far away, before being pulled into another wacky gag from The Muppets? Why, it’s Disney’s Hollywood Studios, of course! This Disney park has been taking us on epic adventures for 30 years, and we thought the best way to say “Hooray!” for Disney’s Hollywood Studios’ big anniversary was to count down our 30 favorite things about the park. From thrilling attractions to sneaky details, here’s why we’re celebrating today:

1. Pan-Pacific inspiration
The main entrance to the park is built to resemble the Pan-Pacific Auditorium built in 1935 in Los Angeles, California. You can also see this architectural inspiration at Disney California Adventure’s turnstiles, which set the stage to transport guests into Buena Vista Street.

Disney's Hollywood Studios

2. A dino superstar
One of Hollywood’s biggest stars isn’t a person—she’s a Dinosaur! Dinosaur Gertie’s Ice Cream of Extinction pays tribute to Gertie the Trained Dinosaur, one of the first popular animated characters—who was even recreated during a segment on the “Disneyland” television series called “The Story of the Animated Drawing.”

Disney's Hollywood Studios

3. Star Tours takes you to Endor
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will be the most immersive step into the world of Star Wars yet, but before we were blasting off to Batuu, we were able to experience the forest moon of Endor—a totally unique queue found only at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. From the Ewok village to the massive AT-AT, the entrance to Star Tours: The Adventures Continue brings you up-close to a galaxy far, far away.

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

4. You are now entering The Twilight Zone
The Hollywood Tower Hotel stand ominously over the park, a once-glittering monument to Hollywood now frozen in time from the night when lightning struck the tower. But that’s not the only unsettling thing about this beloved attraction—throughout the entire experience, you may notice familiar items. Too familiar. From a creepy ventriloquist dummy to a broken pair of glasses, there are references galore to the classic Twilight Zone series on which the attraction was based. So look carefully around you, because anything could be a reference to an episode from the series.

Disney's Hollywood Studios

5. A unique brotherhood
One of the shops along Sunset Boulevard features a tongue-in-cheek reference to classic Hollywood—can you find this window supporting the International Brotherhood of Second Assistant Directors (AKA I.B.S.A.D.)?

Disney's Hollywood Studios

6. Tune-in to delicious milkshakes
Adjacent to the 50’s Prime Time Café is this kooky-retro hot spot where you can sip cocktails while catching up on your favorite 1950s TV shows! While you’re relaxing, we recommend you check out their totally tasty peanut butter & jelly milk shake—a must-try treat unique to this park!

Disney's Hollywood Studios

7. Toy Story Land’s tasty treats
One of the newest additions to Disney’s Hollywood Studios takes you back to the days of playing with your favorite toys in your backyard—including a snack selection that’s a total throwback! Woody’s Lunchbox is full of food straight from our childhood dreams, from the Lunch Box Tarts to the French Toast Sandwich. Plus, soon we’ll be able to enjoy rootin’ tootin’ good food at the Roundup Rodeo BBQ Restaurant, coming soon to Toy Story Land!

MuppetVision 3D

8. A grand display
Miss Piggy has long carried a torch for her beloved Kermie, but it always brings a smile to our faces when we see her carrying a very different kind of torch at the center of the one-of-a-kind fountain that stands in Grand Park, just outside of Muppet*Vision 3-D. Look closely, and you may see a Muppet rodent or two fishing in this “salute to all fountains, but mostly American ones.”

9. The “Key” to Muppets humor
From the second you walk into Muppet*Vison 3-D, you need to keep a sharp eye out, because the gags are everywhere. Check out the ticket window, which is closed but the staff will be “back in five minutes”—they’ve conveniently left the key under the mat. (Just flip it up and check for yourself!) And our favorite gag? “A net full of Jello.” (Get it?)

Lightning McQueen's Racing Academy

10. Get your heart racing at this new attraction
Can Lightning take on Chick Hicks and win? Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy brings to life our favorite Radiator Springs resident through incredible Audio-Animatronics® characters and special effects that rev up the action for the youngest racers. Ka-chow!

Rockin' Roller Coaster

11. The most incredible limo ride ever
The only thing that might be better than an exhilarating roller coaster, complete with thrilling drops and loops, is a roller coaster that allows you to live out your rock and roll fantasies. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith sends you on an unforgettable ride across Los Angeles in a super-stretch limo decked out with a 125-speaker, 24-subwoofer, 32,000-watt audio system that broadcasts favorite Aerosmith songs.

12. Brand-new nighttime magic
Debuting today for the park’s anniversary, Wonderful World of Animation takes you on an incredible journey through more than 90 years of Disney and Pixar animation. Watch in wonder as the façade of the Chinese Theatre is magically transformed—displaying this stirring tribute to animation, beginning an ending with the one-and-only Mickey.

Disney's Hollywood Studios

13. An award-worthy truck
Strike a pose by a vintage truck at this gas station of yesteryear! Did you know Oscar’s Super Service is named in reference to the Academy Awards® cherished statue, the Oscar®?

14. Who hid Roger Rabbit?
Even though the attractions for our favorite Maroon Cartoon superstar are over at Disneyland park and Tokyo Disneyland, Roger Rabbit still has a big presence at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Can you spot the window for Eddie Valliant’s detective agency? Did you notice the Maroon Cartoon billboard along the park’s skyline? If you’ve ever grabbed a bite to eat at the Backlot Express, you might have noticed a familiar stunt car, too—it was originally used for actor Bob Hoskins to ride on before Benny the Cab was added in by animators!

Beauty and the Beast Live!

15. Ever a surprise
The tale as old as time comes to life several times a day at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in the 25-minute-long Beauty and the Beast—Live on Stage, keeping us on the edge of our seats from once-upon-a-time all the way through happily-ever-after. The success of this spectacular show paved the way for Belle’s run on Broadway!

What better way to celebrate Indiana Jones than with a behind-the-scenes look at how the beloved films were made? This show—which marked Dr. Jones’ first full attraction at a Disney park—features re-creations of scenes from Raiders of the Lost Ark, including the iconic boulder scene, the climactic fight around (and atop!) an airplane, and more!

2. Indiana Jones Adventure Outpost (Disney’s Hollywood Studios)
If you’re planning to stock up for your next adventure, you better get your gear from the best. This shop near Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular features some of Indy’s most iconic props for purchase, including his fedora!

Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye

3. Indiana Jones Adventure (Disneyland)
This fan-favorite journey through the Temple of the Forbidden Eye is full of secrets and details (do you have your decoder card handy?), including several real-life props from the Indiana Jones films!

In the outside queue area of Indiana Jones Adventure, you might recognize one of the German Patrol Trucks actually used in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Plus, fans celebrating Temple of Doom’s big anniversary will want to take note of the mine car seen just outside the attraction’s exit, which was used during the mine sequences of the film. Those are just two of many hidden refences to this beloved series—can you find the rest?

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

4. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (Disneyland)
Jonesing for Indy’s return to the wild west after his childhood exploits in The Last Crusade? Well, here’s an idea! There’s an unlikely connection between our favorite explorer and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. The classic Disney parks coaster was  actually one of the inspirations for the runaway mine car sequence in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom! Do the mine car sound effects from the film sound familiar? Some of the sound effects heard in the film were actually recorded at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disneyland!

Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Crystal Skull

5. Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Crystal Skull (Tokyo DisneySea)
Debuting in 2001 (predating Indy’s other adventure involving crystal skulls!), this all-new Indiana Jones Adventure took us into a different temple, this time inspired by an entirely different part of the world—Central America. Guarded by the supernatural and (of course) vengeful Crystal Skull, we join Indy in a quest for the Fountain of Youth. The attractions features familiar thrills (Mummies! Snakes! Bugs!) and new challenges (did we mention the Crystal Skull can shoot fire out of its mouth?). While there are no original movie props hidden in this queue, there are still lots of details to keep a sharp eye out for—including eerie eyes peeking out of a darkened queue, and a room where different illustrations are illuminated by the sun and moon, depending on the time of day!

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril

6. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril (Disneyland Paris)
At this point, we’re starting to think Dr. Jones might want to take a break from exploring temples! This thrilling roller coaster located at Disneyland Paris’ Adventureland sends you on your own Temple of Doom-inspired mine cart chase adventure with Indiana Jones himself. When you’re not plummeting down drops or making 360-loops, enjoy the attraction’s deep attention to detail, featuring stunning lion statues, a base camp—including Indiana’s own tent—and more.

Jock Lindsey's Hangar Bar

7. Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar (Disney Springs)
Named after Indiana Jones’ trusty pilot from Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jock Lindsey’s Hangar Bar is the place to go for any adventurer looking to try a “jocktail” and just kick back after a day of exploration. Naturally, the bar is full of Lindsey’s misadventure mementos, including coasters from bars he’d visited during particularly daring flights (Oh hey, Club Obi Wan!). Keep an eye out for other shout-outs and details, like the Staff of Ra’s headpiece (now safely stashed in a jewelry box) or a picture of Lindsey and Indy together in front of “The Fountain of Youth.” We’d list all the shout-outs to the Indiana Jones films, but we’d be here a while—so hop in your plane and go see the bar for yourself!

Trader Sam's

8. Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar (Disneyland Hotel)
This fan-favorite bar at the Disneyland Hotel is known for more than its delicious drinks—the bar is full of memorabilia and shout-outs to Disneyland classics like Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, the Jungle Cruise, and—you guessed it—Indiana Jones Adventure. Keep an eye out for Indiana Jones’ iconic bullwhip on display, plus an ancient scroll or two depicting the Temple of the Forbidden Eye. There are so many secrets to uncover at this magical bar—so grab a seat, order some long beans, and start your own adventure!

Bo Peep Gets Lost: How Pixar Found the Heart of Toy Story 4

By Zach Johnson

After a 20-year absence from the big screen, Bo Peep (Annie Potts) will make her long-awaited return when Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 4 opens in U.S. theaters June 21, 2019. After a teaser trailer was released in January, fans were understandably curious about Bo’s new look. So, when we visited Pixar Animation Studios in Emeryville, California, last month, we corralled “Team Bo” to give us the inside scoop on where she is now—and, of course, where she’s been hiding.

Toy Story 4 opens with a flashback that shows Bo leading a rescue mission for RC car, who’s stuck in the rain and runs the risk of being washed away. As Bo enlists Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusack), and others to jump into action, it reminds the audience that she is, and always has been, a leader. Though the mission is a success, Bo doesn’t have time to celebrate, as she’s about to leave Molly’s room—for good. “Being a baby lamp, she’s given away a lot sooner than other toys,” story supervisor Valerie LaPointe said. “Once that little girl turns 5 or 6 years old, she’s like, ‘That’s for babies. I don’t want it anymore.’” While the other toys stay with Andy—and are later given to Bonnie—Bo begins a journey all her own.

Toy Story 4 concept art

“Team Bo” assembled five years ago, and to better understand the character, they began by watching every clip of Bo from the first two Toy Story films back-to-back. “Annie Potts’ voice is such a nice contrast to her being this pretty, pink, porcelain doll. She’s confident. She’s flirty with Woody, she’s often the voice of reason to him, and she’s a confidante to him,” LaPointe said. “He talks to her and shares his feelings in a way that’s beyond his relationship with Buzz.”

When Toy Story 4 was announced in 2015, it was described as a “romantic comedy.” But what was originally conceived as a love story between Bo and Woody evolved into something else. “It was clear it couldn’t just be that. It would become a tiny people movie as opposed to a Toy Story film,” director Josh Cooley explained. “There’s a ton of adventure in it. Raiders of the Lost Ark isn’t a love story, but it has great romantic elements in it. So, I kind of think of it more like that.”

Toy Story 4 concept art

Producer Jonas Rivera, who worked on Toy Story and Toy Story 2, realized Bo could serve a larger purpose. “Although she was a worthy character and there was something interesting to us about paying off their relationship, it wasn’t until probably two years ago that we started going, ‘Well, what if we’ve made it Woody-centric? His worst fear—he said it all along—was to be a lost toy. What if she represented something that would challenge his place in the world?’” he recalled. “It was almost like a Lady and the Tramp analogy, where one’s out in the world asking, ‘Why wouldn’t you want all this?’ and the other one says, ‘No! I want to be at home.’” Out of anyone, he added, “Bo had the potential to change him more than anything ever has.”

But for a long stretch of time, Bo’s journey was independent of Woody’s, and where she landed after leaving him provided “Team Bo” with endless possibilities. “Did she end up in a thrift store? On the street? How far can we push it? We explored every possible thing that she could have gone through, knowing that eventually she would end up in an antiques store,” LaPointe said. At one point, “Team Bo” toyed with the idea of making her a “survivalist character,” where she and other toys would try to repair themselves to make it out of the antique store. They contemplated having her retire as a figurine, choosing a “safe life up on a shelf.” Nothing felt right, until they asked themselves, “Does Bo just want to be a toy again, like Buzz and Woody?”

The latter option is ultimately what Bo decided for herself, and “Team Bo” came to that conclusion by considering two key elements: entertainment value and story motivation, LaPointe said. “So,” she said, “we decided that Bo went from being a baby’s lamp to a lost toy.”

Because Bo didn’t have much screen time before, “Team Bo” had more wiggle room to make subtle yet significant tweaks. “It was really essential that we redefined Bo for this movie,” story artist Carrie Hobson explained. “As a story team, we worked really hard to figure out what exactly her personality traits were after all this time.” But, of course, they wanted to keep Bo’s integrity intact. “We got a lot of freedom to redesign her, but still wanted be true to what she was in the first Toy Story,” character modeling artist Tanja Krampfert said. “To figure that out, we went all the way back and looked at original 25-year-old drawings and artwork that was made for the first movie. We also looked at every shot of her in the movies to figure out her shapes, her movements, and her facial features to be true to what the audience remembered.”

Toy Story

Toy Story 4

Advances in technology allowed animators to incorporate richer details. For example, a cracking glaze was used in Bo’s hair, Krampfert said, “to remind the audience she is porcelain.”

Ironically, Bo was a hard one to crack in terms of deciding what her movements would be. “We have the fragility of porcelain right up against the needs of an action hero, so we knew this was going to be a dynamic combo,” directing animator Becki Tower said. Describing Bo as “poised” and “purposeful,” Tower added, “She is graceful and strong, much like a dancer or a gymnast.”

“Team Bo” took movement cues from strong female athletes and movie characters. “As an animation team, we talked about how we set our parameters for each character. ‘Would Bo do this? When would she do this? Is it appropriate for this shot or that shot?’” Tower told D23, adding, “It’s all about what’s out there that we can mine for gold.”

Those parameters worked to the team’s advantage. As directing animator Patty Kihm explained, “From the start, we could have fudged it and pretended she had been plastic the whole time. Maybe the audience wouldn’t have remembered. But we thought it’s easier to embrace this weakness, or this delicacy of hers, and see how that would change her character.”

Toy Story 4 concept art

Bo was always a spitfire, but in Toy Story 4, she’s feistier than ever. “Ultimately, she’s just a character who decided she’s tired of sitting on a shelf and waiting for life to happen,” Hobson said. “She learned to adapt. She takes chances and she’s somewhat unpredictable. She doesn’t play by toy rules, so unlike a normal toy, she can literally change her default toy mode. This means when a kid picks her up, she can change what pose she’s locked into it, enabling her to be whatever kind of toy she wants to be. She’s also active and resourceful in her life as a lost toy. She has to be really smart about how she gets around. Something that we always had fun with was that she’s not immune to fumbling. She’s not immune to messing up.” In fact, as character modeling artist Mara MacMahon noted, “If you look at some designs, there’s tape around her arms. We didn’t want to hide the fact that over the 20 years and the transition she’s made, there’s probably some tough spots. She is porcelain and she might have broken and put herself back together.”

Toy Story 4

To service the story, producer Mark Nielsen said, “It was very important to us that Bo had a different worldview than Woody.” That’s where “Team Bo” came into play. LaPointe added, “We decided that through all the trials of being given away, wherever she ended up in this space and time, she took her own life into her own hands and decided, ‘I want to be a toy. I want to have play time.’ She chose to be a lost toy. Of course, we know from the other films that being a lost toy is the ‘worst possible thing that can happen to a toy’…according to Woody, at least! He is the character whose mind we really needed to change and evolve… Her perception of this ‘terrible’ thing is not terrible. In fact, it’s great! And that brings us to our new Bo Peep.”

As Hobson told D23, “She has this sense of humor, this go-with-the-flow mentality to life now… True to the old Bo, she loves messing with Woody. She was always very sarcastic in the original movies. We wanted to pull upon that wit, but also allow her to be silly and playful. She’s also a little rougher than Woody because she’s seen things. She knows what it takes to get a job done, and she’s not afraid to do it. This new Bo, while she is tough, is also very caring. Her sheep are very important to her, so she’s like a good mom to them. She also loves her BFF, her buddy, Giggle McDimples (Ally Maki). “All in all, we wanted to stay true to the core of who Bo was, but allow her to grow as a character to show that she’s adapted and changed. She’s a lost toy now, which Woody doesn’t really get. He’s trying to wrap his head around it all. But together, with their strengths combined—he’s a sheriff, she’s a shepherdess—they make a really great team.”

All the Magical Moments from Disney Channel Fan Fest

By Zach Johnson

Ask any Disney Channel star to identify their favorite part of Disney Channel Fan Fest, and the answer was the same: “Meeting the fans!” said Ethan Wacker, who stars as Bernie Schotz on Bizaardvark. “The fact that we can make people happy by meeting them is amazing in itself.”

Stars from hit television series like Andi Mack and Raven’s Home, as well as stars from Disney Channel Original Movies like Descendants 3 and Kim Possible, brought joy to countless guests at Disney California Adventure on Saturday, April 27. The day began with a star-studded cavalcade, led by Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse. “Who gets to be in a Disney cavalcade?” asked an overjoyed Rebecca Metz, who stars as Jenna Wrather on Coop & Cami Ask the World. “I was sitting next to Donald Duck!” Miranda May, who stars as Lou Hockhauser on BUNK’D, agreed, adding, “It was very surreal to be in the cavalcade, because people were lining the street to wave at you. We were like, ‘Whoa! This is kind of a moment! We all really need to take this in.’”

The cavalcade kickstarted an afternoon of fun panels on Pixar Pier, where Radio Disney host Morgan Tompkins interviewed the stars of DuckTales and Sydney to the Max and introduced fans to stars from the upcoming series Amphibia and Just Roll With It. When we caught up with BUNK’D star Will Buie Jr. afterward, he said he “especially” liked the panel, while co-star Mallory James Mahoney said, “We got to do some crazy ‘Would You Wrather?’ questions, too!”

The first main stage event was an interactive session with the cast of the upcoming series Just Roll With It. Because the comedy is part-scripted, part-improv, stars Tobie Windham, Suzi Barrett, Ramon Reed, and Kaylin Hayman wanted to preview what fans can expect when the series premieres June 14 on Disney Channel. To start, Windham proved he can, you know, “just roll with it” by taking a bite of a sandwich made with crispy grasshoppers, oysters, ants in gelatin, jalapeño peppers, mayonnaise, and lima beans—courtesy of chef Reed. Later, Barrett was tasked with opening three mystery boxes—and one of them sprayed yellow paint in her face! When she opened the last box and smoke billowed out, Reed and Hayman sprang into action and doused her with a fire hose (which lasted longer than necessary, for comedic effect).

In between panels, Trinitee Stokes came onstage to host a live, exclusive edition of Disney Quizney, with pals like Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and Pluto making surprise appearances.

Next, Tompkins invited the stars from Coop & Cami Ask the World, BUNK’D, and Sydney to the Max to appear onstage to discuss the ins and outs of their respective shows. To the delight of fans, co-stars Dakota Lotus and Ruby Rose Turner stuck around to facilitate the audience Q&A. Then, Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Joshua Rush, and Lilan Bowden were greeted with thunderous applause as they discussed the final season of Andi Mack, which returns with two back-to-back episodes Friday, June 21, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. “I’m excited we all got to come out and represent our show, because we love it,” Lee told us later in the afternoon. “It’s really exciting to be around people who love it as much as we do. It’s just been such a ride—this whole Andi Mack journey.”

The Andi Mack cast remained onstage as the stars of Raven’s Home came out to tease the upcoming third season. Returning for his second Disney Channel Fan Fest, Jason Maybaum, who stars as Levi Grayson, told us, “This one was next-level!” Co-star Navia Robinson, who plays Nia Baxter-Carter, echoed his sentiment, adding, “It’s just getting bigger and better!”

The next session celebrated animation on Disney Channel with cast members from Amphibia, Big City Greens, and DuckTales. One of the highlights came when Bobby Moynihan and Danny Pudi, who voice Louie Duck and Huey Duck, respectively, improvised an eight-minute episode of DuckTales. As Moynihan later joked with us, “I’m pretty sure it is going to be animated word for word on the Disney airwaves immediately!” All jokes aside, he added, “We’re very lucky we get to be here.”

Indeed. All afternoon, fans had the opportunity to come face-to-face with some of their stars. “There was this little girl at the meet and greet and she made a beeline right to me. She ran up to me and just looked at me for like 15 seconds and said nothing,” Ciara Riley Wilson, who played Athena in Kim Possible, told D23. “I was like, ‘You are just the cutest little thing! I don’t know what to do! Do you want a hug? Should we get a picture?’ It honestly touched my heart.”

“I’ve never been to Disney Channel Fan Fest before and this has been such a cool experience, getting to meet the fans,” said Anna Cathcart, who reprises her role as Dizzy in this summer’s Descendants 3. “Being here at Disney California Adventure is so much fun. It’s been amazing!”

The fan-focused event also gave many of Disney Channel’s biggest stars a chance to fan out over their peers. “It’s really fun getting to connect with your other friends from the Disney community,” said Jadah Marie, who stars as Celia (daughter of Dr. Facilier) in Descendants 3. “I’ve said this a million times today, but it’s a dream come true. I’ll say it a hundred, a thousand, a million times more!”

And yes, even the stars get nervous around other stars. As May admitted to D23, “We do a lot of things together, so I thought I’d met pretty much everyone. But then I saw Brenda Song walk by. I didn’t get to meet her, but I did have an internal fangirl moment! And then I kept walking!”

As the sun began to set, the Disney Channel Voices Showcase got underway on Pixar Pier. Raven-Symoné and dozens of other stars nabbed front row seats to watch Booboo Stewart, Ruby Rose Turner, Isaac Ryan Brown, Kylie Cantrall, and Meg Donnelly perform, offering high-fives and hugs after each set. Stewart, who had never sung in public with That Band Honey until the showcase, stayed onstage afterward for the closing Descendants 3 session. As Tompkins introduced Stewart’s co-stars—Cathcart, Jadah Marie, Dove Cameron, Sofia Carson, and Cheyenne Jackson—fans went wild. Not only did the cast answer fan questions, but they also made an exciting announcement: Descendants 3 will premiere this August on Disney Channel!

“Seeing the fans today and what it means to them… you realize what an impact your art can make,” Jackson, who plays Hades in Descendants 3, told D23. Praising original cast members Carson, Cameron, and Stewart in particular, he added, “It was wild shooting with this cast. I didn’t know what to make of them and how it was going to be. To be honest, I didn’t realize how famous they were until the first time we were shooting in Vancouver and a couple of the cast members were completely surrounded, like they were the Beatles or they were Madonna.”

“They’re really cool kids and they’re really great artists who know what this franchise means to people,” Jackson continued. “They’re great people—and they’re really good! I was impressed.”

Fittingly, Disney Channel Fan Fest ended with a Descendants-themed dance party, complete with confetti, fog, and all your favorite Disney Channel stars—including Raphael Alejandro, Sean Giambrone, Sky Katz, Ava Kolker, Ruth Righi, and Albert Tsai—busting out their greatest moves.

As many actors admitted to D23, their favorite part of the day wasn’t just being in the park—it was experiencing it with their biggest fans. “My favorite part about Fan Fest is the fans,” said Sadie Stanley, who played Kim Possible. “I’ve never experienced an event like this, where it’s made for the fans. We get to meet them, and they get to meet us, and we get to hear what they think about our show or our movie. It’s such a lovely experience where we’re all coming together and having fun. I’ve had an amazing day in the park just hanging out. We all love this!”

Descendants 3 Gets a Premiere Date

By Zach Johnson

Something wicked this way comes.

Moments ago, during Disney Channel Fan Fest’s final main stage session at Disney California Adventure Park in Anaheim, California, Descendants 3 stars Dove Cameron, Sofia Carson, Booboo Stewart, and Anna Cathcart announced the highly anticipated “three-quel” will premiere this August on Disney Channel! Descendants 3 newcomers Cheyenne Jackson (Hades, Lord of the Underworld) and Jadah Marie (Celia Facilier) joined them onstage, where Jackson introduced a thrilling teaser video that outlined Hades’ plans to seek vengeance on the people of Auradon.

Descendants 3

Years on the Isle of the Lost turned Hades into an even bigger hot-head. “I was Lord of the Underworld, not Lord of the Underground!
