RESULTS

Mostly As
Lightning McQueen

Ka-chow! Your car deserves the name of a winner like Lightning McQueen from Disney and Pixar’s 2006 film Cars. Ambitious yet kind-hearted, determined yet humble, you’re a true leader when you take to the road.

Mostly Bs
Herbie

Friendly, occasionally mischievous, but always full of heart—both you and your car are reliable and protective… so of course your vehicle should be named after the first iconic Disney car, from 1969’s The Love Bug!

Mostly Cs
Benny the Cab

If only your real-life car could talk, it’d have the perfect wisecrack for every situation—much like Benny the Cab in 1988’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Our one hope is that you pay a bit more attention to the rules of the road than Benny does…

Mostly Ds
The Electric Mayhem Bus

Like wow, man. You’re a total free-spirit, and we wouldn’t be surprised if your ride is covered with all manner of stickers and paint. So why not name it after Dr. Teeth’s transport of most heavy-duty proportions in 1979’s The Muppet Movie?

Mostly Es
The Candy Kart

Vanellope von Schweetz’s Sugar Rush game cart in 2012’s Wreck-It Ralph has gummy-worm tire treads and a chocolate-covered wafer for a rear spoiler. Your car might not have all those yummy bells and whistles, but this is a great name for a sweet ride.

Mostly Fs
The Millennium Falcon

Okay, hear us out: We know that the “fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy” isn’t exactly a car, but it’s the perfect name for an automobile that may look a little worn but always gets you where you need to go. We’re sure Lando, Han, and Chewie would approve.

Finding the Real John Glenn and Alan Shepard in Disney+’s The Right Stuff

By Jim Frye

In 1979, famed American writer Tom Wolfe turned our gazes skyward, releasing The Right Stuff, a book richly detailing the young pilots selected for NASA’s very first attempt to put men into space. These astronauts, the “Mercury Seven” as they were called, galvanized the country in the early ’60s around a shared ambition and hope, proving that they truly did have the titular “right stuff” to lead us into the new frontier. Wolfe’s book became a worldwide best-seller, spawning a 1983 movie of the same name, and forever cementing the mythos of America’s first astronauts into our shared national pride. National Geographic takes a fresh look at those storied events with its new series The Right Stuff, premiering October 9, 2020, on Disney+.

Based on Wolfe’s iconic 1979 book, the new series delves deeper into the incredible tales of America’s first astronauts, focusing especially closely on two men at the center of the story jockeying to become the first man in space: Major John Glenn, a Marine and committed family man, and Lieutenant Commander Alan Shepard, one of the best pilots in Navy history.

the right stuff

The actor Patrick J. Adams, perhaps best known for his role in the long-running series Suits, portrays Major John Glenn, a bigger-than-life character who became a giant presence in the American psyche. To prepare for the part, Adams jumped headlong into the mountains of information available to him regarding Glenn. “I had the luxury of an enormous amount of resources—John Glenn’s life is incredibly well-documented,” says Adams in an exclusive interview with D23.com. “Ohio State University has the John Glenn archives, which are hundreds and hundreds of boxes of stuff. I had the opportunity to spend a couple of days trying to find some key pieces. And I just tried to steep myself in all things John Glenn.”

Adams was able to study a whole slew of material, from Glenn’s private letters, journal entries, and notes from throughout his service, to his correspondence with U.S. Presidents and many others. “I went through it all and looked for those pieces that would spark something in me and I used those as my linchpins, and I moved away from the idea of having to do an impression of John Glenn,” he says. “I had to move beyond him as a person in the culture and embrace what parts of him felt like they brought something up in me.”

the right stuff

Taking on the role of Lieutenant Commander Alan Shepard is Jake McDorman, who audiences may have seen in TV series such as Limitless, Shameless, and FX’s What We Do in the Shadows. In contrast to John Glenn, who seemed to embrace the acclaim and didn’t shy away from the spotlight, his counterpart, Shepard, preferred a different route. McDorman describes him as the yin to John Glenn’s yang—a completely different animal. “He was not a public person,” says McDorman. “He was really uncomfortable with a lot of the aspects of celebrity.”

As he dug into his research for the role, McDorman found out more about this dichotomy between Glenn and Shepard, and why they approached their lives—and careers—so differently. “The more I researched Shepard, the more I researched the arc of the Mercury program, and the more I found out why they were so different—I think John Glenn was already somewhat of a celebrity. He had fought in the Korean War and had been on TV in a very public persona, and he understood how important it was to have public opinion in favor of the Space Program in order to get the momentum it needed. Shepard, though, was an all-out, mad-dog fighter jock—hard-drinking from the get-to. He was uncomfortable being not just a role model but being the family-friendly persona of an astronaut that they all had to adopt.”

the right stuff

Understanding these aspects about the real-life Alan Shepard helped McDorman to get better into the minds of the test pilots and their relationship with fear, death, and international celebrity. “Shepard wanted to [keep] his head down and not lose who he was or change who he was,” he says. “His drive to push the limits, as test pilots would—to find the limits, find the edge, find the line, to execute your job effectively—that was kind of what made him tick.”

In the late ’50s, at the height of the Cold War, the Soviet Union dominated the space race, casting a long shadow on the rocket program in America. NASA had the monumental task of sending a man into space, something engineers estimated would take decades. They were given two years, and the Mercury space program was born. And although their approaches were considerably different, both John Glenn and Alan Shepard are today regarded as modern-day heroes and examples of accomplishing the impossible.

the right stuff

In addition to Patrick J. Adams as Major John Glenn and Jake McDorman as Lieutenant Commander Alan Shepard, The Right Stuff stars Colin O’Donoghue as Captain Gordo Cooper, the youngest of the seven astronauts; Eloise Mumford as Trudy Cooper, an accomplished pilot in her own right; James Lafferty as Scott Carpenter, dubbed “The Poet” by his colleagues; Nora Zehetner as Annie Glenn; Eric Ladin as Chris Kraft, Jr.; Patrick Fischler as Bob Gilruth, NASA engineers; Aaron Staton as Wally Schirra, the prankster; Michael Trotter as Virgil “Gus” Grissom, who became the second man in space; Micah Stock as Deke Slayton, quiet yet incredibly smart; Shannon Lucio as Louise Shepard; and Josh Cooke as Loudon Wainwright, Jr., the writer assigned to cover the astronauts.

JUST ANNOUNCED: Production Begins on Disney Junior’s Mickey Mouse Funhouse

By Beth Deitchman

Here’s something fun to start the day: Our friends at Disney Junior have just announced that production has begun on Mickey Mouse Funhouse, a whimsical animated series that will introduce Funny, an enchanted talking playhouse who leads Mickey and his pals—Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, and Pluto—on imaginative adventures. The new series, which is geared toward preschoolers and their families, is slated to debut in 2021.

“Preschoolers around the world love Mickey Mouse and friends, and we are eager to showcase these beloved characters as they are transported to magical new destinations in each episode, encouraging kids to expand their own worlds using their imaginations,” Joe D’Ambrosia, senior vice president, Original Programming, and general manager, Disney Junior, said. “We can’t wait for our young audience to meet Funny, who is a dynamic and playful addition to the treasured world of Mickey Mouse.”

Each episode of Mickey Mouse Funhouse will include two 11-minute stories separated by a dance break that’s sure to get everyone up and moving. The series will demonstrate imaginative play, encourage wish fulfillment, and impart age-appropriate social and emotional lessons about friendship, creativity, and ingenuity.

Executive producer Phil Weinstein, co-executive producer/supervising story editor Thomas Hart, and story editor Mark Drop are all part of the creative team from Disney Junior’s Emmy® Award-nominated series for preschoolers Mickey and the Roadster Racers. Emmy winner Alan Bodner (Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure) is the new series’ art director. Music for Mickey Mouse Funhouse will be composed by Beau Black (The Lion Guard), who will also co-write original songs for the series with Loren Hoskins (Jake and the Never Land Pirates). Mickey Mouse Funhouse is produced by Disney Television Animation.

Behind the Emerald Curtain: Concept Art from Disney’s Return to Oz

By Kevin Kern, Walt Disney Archives

Every now and then, while working with the historical production artwork preserved in the Walt Disney Archives, one has to pause to appreciate just how special each individual piece is, and what story it helps to tell. Some of my favorite examples to peruse in this way come from the production of director Walter Murch’s 1985 epic, Return to Oz.

Combining lavish production design and intricate special effects, the film marks a unique moment in Disney studio history, one that has come to be fondly embraced as a cult classic by an entire generation of fans. Return to Oz is a unique artistic realization, featuring a sense of design grandeur that firmly plants itself in both the realms of Baum’s classic Oz tales and the era of Hollywood blockbusters it was produced amidst.

Return to Oz
Emerald City Restored. Production drawing. Blue-line on paper. 1983.

Taking cues from a studio looking to broaden its film fare, boldly experimenting with some of the brightest and most creative minds in the motion-picture industry at the time, Return to Oz showcased a memorable take on Baum’s source material—itself which has become known as the prototypical series of American fairy tales. Digging deep into our vaults (something we’re sure even the great Nome King would be proud of), we wanted to share a brief gallery of concept artwork from the film, highlighting this important, yellow-bricked crossroad, one of the many intersections between Disney and Oz.

Loose and highly stylized, the following sketches are the work of current Pixar production designer Harley Jessup, who was a story artist on Return to Oz early in his career. Representing the special effects-heavy sequence from the film when The Gump first takes flight, whisking Dorothy and her travel companions away from the clutches of the evil Mombi, these small felt marker works are meant to immediately invoke a heightened sense of character, energy, and scope for what is an exciting, action-packed moment in the film.

From Oz to Kansas and back, we hope you enjoy this artistic peek at Return to Oz, one of The Walt Disney Studios’ most ambitious projects.

Follow the yellow-bricked crossroad and Return to Oz, now streaming on Disney+!

Inside the Magical Moments from Dancing with the Stars’ “Disney Night”

By Zach Johnson

Dancing with the Stars brought the magic of Disney to viewers’ homes all around the U.S. Monday. The ABC competition series’ annual “Disney Night” began with Mickey Mouse giving a warm welcome to Tyra Banks, the show’s new host and executive producer. Banks then entered the ballroom wearing a fabulous dress inspired by the ultimate fashionista, Minnie Mouse, as the Main Street Electrical Parade lit up the ballroom. “We all need a bit of magic in our lives,” Banks told viewers. “Since we can’t go to Disneyland, we are bringing some Disney magic to all of you with our princes, our princesses, our pirates, and more!”

First up were Skai Jackson and her partner, Alan Bersten, dancing the jive to Disney Legend Randy Newman’s “Almost There” from The Princess and the Frog. “I was really excited about dancing to The Princess and the Frog. It has always been one of my favorite Disney movies,” Jackson told D23 after earning a final score of 18/30. “Tiana is the only Black Disney Princess, so that’s really special, and no one has ever done the song on the show before.” The Disney Channel actress, best known for her role as Zuri Ross in Jessie and BUNK’D, added she’d been “really looking forward” to bringing everything full circle with the “Disney Night” episode. “I had a blast doing it. I hope I made my Disney family proud!”

Following Jackson and Bersten were Monica Aldama and partner Val Chmerkovskiy dancing the waltz to Disney Legends Howard Ashman and Alan Menken’s “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid. The duo earned their highest score this season, a 21/30, with judge Carrie Ann Inaba saying Aldama was like a “different person” and judge Bruno Tonioli commending the “confidence and connection” she’d displayed on the dance floor.

Next up were Justina Machado and partner Sasha Farber dancing the Charleston to “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” from Mary Poppins. “It’s great to do something that is so out of your comfort zone,” Machado told D23 after earning a 19/30. “And then to play a character that I would never see myself playing, that part was exciting.” Added Farber, “It was absolutely magical, from the outfits to the dance to the way Justina performed it.”

Hot on their heels was the self-anointed “Ultimate Disney Princess Dad” AJ McLean and his partner, Cheryl Burke, dancing the quickstep to “Prince Ali” from Aladdin. Before they received a final score of 21/30, new judge Derek Hough said, “AJ, I can always rely on you to put a smile on my face. You are always committed to every performance—so much fun!”

Anne Heche and partner Keo Motsepe were next, dancing the quickstep to Menken and David Zippel’s “Zero to Hero” from Hercules. “This dance was so much fun to do,” Motsepe told D23 after the show. “Everyone who’d seen it in rehearsal was like, ‘Wow!’” Although they are hoping to improve upon their score of 15/30 in next week’s episode, Motsepe said their chemistry is only getting stronger as the competition continues. “Anne and I are like two kids in Disneyland,” he said. “Just having a good time in our own world… but together!”

Following Heche and Motsepe were Jeannie Mai and partner Brandon Armstrong dancing the Viennese waltz to “Married Life” from Up. Dressed as Carl and Ellie and using balloons as props, they lifted their scores to a season high of 22/30 with one eight and two sevens. Mai was so surprised and thrilled by the judges’ reactions she actually ran off with their score cards. “I couldn’t believe it!” she later told D23. “I worked so hard this week for one seven; I just wanted a seven.” She also dedicated the performance to her rapper fiancé, Jeezy: “I told the producers, ‘I want Up! Brandon put together beautiful choreography.” Just as he did for “Disney Night,” Armstrong said his goal for the coming weeks is to choreograph numbers that elicit an emotional response from viewers. “I’m very much of the mindset that if you keep the inside of your little bubble clean, then the people looking in will always respect that, and it will always be going up and up—literally, going Up. Get it?”

Next, Nelly and partner Daniella Karagach danced the foxtrot to “It’s Alright” from the upcoming Disney and Pixar film Soul, opening in U.S. theaters November 20. The routine earned three sixes for a total of 18/30. “I thought it was more than alright; I thought it was great,” Hough said, praising Nelly’s “smooth” frame. Tonioli called it a “charming” number, telling Nelly, “You behaved like a real gentleman with your lady. So tender! So attentive!”

Following in their footsteps were Carole Baskin and partner Pasha Pashkov dancing the samba to Disney Legends Elton John and Tim Rice’s “Circle of Life” from The Lion King. “I love the movie. It’s such a wonderful message,” Baskin said of their pick. “One of the most beautiful things about the Disney films that feature animals is that they are living free.” Although Baskin and Pashkov earned the lowest score of the night, with a 12/30, it wasn’t all bad news. Said Inaba, “I really want to salute you for the love you put into that dance.”

Kaitlyn Bristowe and Artem Chigvintsev fared better after dancing the foxtrot to “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana. “I’ve seen Moana probably 50 times,” admitted Bristowe. “She comes from this island and that’s all she knows, but she wants to see what’s beyond the reef. And that’s like me coming out of my small town.” Their performance made waves with the judges, resulting in 23/30. Inaba called it “the best dance of the night,” Hough admired Bristowe’s “fluidity,” and Tonioli told her, “You really reminded me of the shape of water.”

After the commercial break, Vernon Davis and partner Peta Murgatroyd invited the at-home audience to “Be Our Guest” as they danced the quickstep to the Beauty and the Beast classic, earning a score of 22/30. After their performance, Murgatroyd admitted to D23, “I was not expecting that! I was hoping for sevens, and when the eight came up, I think I screamed really loudly. I have to watch that back to see if I made a fool of myself!” And although he had initially hoped to dress up as Beast, Davis happily lit up the dance floor as Lumière. “He’s awesome,” the NFL player told D23. “I was watching him last night before I went to bed, just trying to mimic him a little bit and loosen up.” Since the show started, Davis said his three kids have been getting a kick out of seeing him perform. “They love seeing me do something different. They’ve been watching me play football their entire lives—since they were born—so it’s nice to do something else and change it up,” Davis said. “They’re excited for me and they’re happy—and they like all the outfits I’m wearing.”

Next, Nev Schulman and partner Jenna Johnson danced the Argentine tango to “Angelica” from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. After earning a 24/30, the highest score of the season, Johnson told D23, “I don’t think Nev dropped character one time throughout two hours of filming!” According to Schulman, “I felt more comfortable as Captain Jack Sparrow. And not just the character, but the set and the music really put me in the zone to be smoldering, passionate, and sharp. But the outfit and the makeup helped a lot, for sure.” Going forward in the competition, Johnson said, “We have some momentum right now and we want to keep building on that. I don’t want to put too much pressure on ourselves. I want us to keep pushing, keep working hard, and keep putting our best foot forward every Monday. I’m very happy with where we’re at but I want to keep working really, really hard.”

Johnny Weir and partner Britt Stewart had big shoes to fill—and boy, did they! Their rumba routine, set to Disney Legend Christina Aguilera’s “Reflection (2020)” from Mulan, landed them at the top of the leaderboard, tying Schulman and Johnson’ score of 24/30. “Mulan is about the strength of family and sacrifice, and I definitely feel I wouldn’t be who I am without my family,” admitted Weir. “And it is an honor for me to represent them.” His performance with Stewart moved Inaba to tears; she told him, “I believe in you so much. Tonight, watching you dance like that felt so good, because I saw you make the transition from being an ice skater to being a ballroom Latin dancer… It was epic!” Hough called the number “beautiful” twice, while Tonioli praised Weir’s “exquisite” shapes and extensions.

Jesse Metcalfe and partner Sharna Burgess danced the jive to “King of New York” from Newsies next, earning a score of 20/30. “In rediscovering Newsies, I felt like ‘King of New York’ was the perfect song, and I loved what our wardrobe department did with the costumes,” Metcalfe told D23 after the show. “I just thought it was a really great opportunity for me to show a more fun side and maybe show some Broadway potential.” Burgess said she was “very proud” of Metcalfe’s continued improvements and can’t wait to get to work on next week’s cha cha. “It’s going to bring out a different kind of spice. We’re going to bring out that hip action,” Burgess said with a laugh. “If we keep working the way that we’re working, then we can keep climbing the leaderboard and impressing the judges.”

The final “Disney Night” dance saw Chrishell Stause and Gleb Savchenko performing the waltz to “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes” from Cinderella. “We all know Cinderella had a rough start, so I really relate to her in many ways,” said Stause. “I feel like this is the ultimate rags-to-riches story.” Their romantic waltz nearly ended with a kiss—until the clock struck midnight and the magic wore off. Before receiving a score of 22/30 (their highest yet!), Tonioli crowned Stause “the belle of the ball,” telling her, “You really look like the ultimate Disney princess. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! I could feel the romance unfolding.” Likewise, Inaba told Stause and Savchenko, “You guys are like magic together!”

Of course, all good stories must come to an end. After finding themselves in the bottom two with Heche and Motsepe, Baskin and Pashkov became the second couple eliminated. Smiling, Baskin said, “My husband is going to be so happy I’m coming home!” Overall, as Inaba had said moments earlier, “Everyone did an amazing job for ‘Disney Night’ tonight.”

Lush, Vibrant Changes Coming Soon to Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort

Should you find yourself visiting Walt Disney World Resort about a year from now (sounds good to us!), you may notice some fantastic changes at a fan-favorite resort. Just this week, our friends over at Disney Parks Blog shared a look at how the arrival experience at the beloved Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort is being updated with an enhanced entryway—and it’s all set to debut just in time for the resort hotel’s 50th anniversary in Summer 2021.

The new porte cochère will showcase its iconic mid-20th century architecture; teams from Walt Disney Imagineering and Walt Disney World produced a design inspired by colors, patterns, and textures found throughout the resort. Additionally, along the Monorail station, bold new wooden screens will be covered with geometric patterns in bright, tropical colors that complete an exciting new composition to welcome guests upon arrival. The entryway’s open and airy design will feature dramatic lighting elements, including chandeliers—matching the existing grand chandelier in the resort lobby—inspired by glass floats, fishing nets and oversized bamboo elements. Look for enhancements to the gardens and fountains, as well. And that’s not all: All of the resort’s guest rooms are being beautifully redone, too!

Visiting sooner than next year? Never fear—while work is underway in the coming months, guests can still enjoy access to the Great Ceremonial House and its operating dining and retail outlets. Look for more tropically terrific info as it becomes available…
