Silly Symphony A series of 75 cartoons, beginning with The Skeleton Dance in 1929. Composer Carl Stalling suggested to Walt Disney that there be a second cartoon series to be different from the Mickey Mouse series, which was based on comedic action centered around one character. The Silly Symphonies would be based on musical themes, and each would feature a different cast of characters. The series served as the training ground for the animators and other Disney artists as they prepared for the feature films. Seven Silly Symphonies won Academy Awards for best cartoon.
