Ingredients

CHOCOLATE MUD FILLING
2 cups unsalted butter
1 1/2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
10 eggs
1/2 tablespoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar

CHOCOLATE PIE DOUGH
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

COFFEE GANACHE
1 cup bittersweet chocolate chips
1 cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon coffee extract

FOR CHOCOLATE MUD FILLING:

  1. Melt butter and chocolate in a heavy saucepan over low heat, mixing until smooth; take off heat and set aside.
  2. Whisk together eggs and vanilla in a mixing bowl. In a separate bowl, sift together flour and sugar.
  3. Add flour and sugar mixture to egg and vanilla mixture, whisking to combine. Use an immersion blender to thoroughly combine until completely smooth.
  4. Add chocolate and butter mixture; using immersion blender, mix until smooth and completely incorporated.
  5. Refrigerate, covered, for 24 hours.

FOR CHOCOLATE PIE DOUGH:

  1. Mix sugar and butter in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment.
  2. Sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in a mixing bowl. Add flour mixture to the butter and sugar mixture.
  3. Slowly add eggs and vanilla extract until dough holds together and is no longer sticky.
  4. Dump dough out onto a piece of plastic wrap on the counter; press dough into a rough circle and wrap tightly with plastic wrap. Refrigerate at least 1 hour.

FOR COFFEE GANACHE:

  1. Place chocolate chips in a medium heatproof bowl.
  2. Bring cream to a simmer in a small saucepan; pour hot cream over chocolate and stir until chocolate is completely melted. Stir in coffee extract.

TO ASSEMBLE:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Roll chocolate pie dough to ¼-inch thickness; if making mini pies, cut into eight 6-inch circles.
  3. Press dough into 9-inch pie tin or eight 4-inch pie tins; sides should reach the outermost part of the lip on the tin.
  4. Fill large shell ¾ full with filling or scoop ½ cup chocolate mud batter into each mini shell.
  5. Bake approximately 40 to 45 minutes for a large pie or 15 minutes for mini pies.
  6. Cool to room temperature. Add about 1 tablespoon coffee ganache into centers of pie slices (or mini pies) before serving.

Celebrate Friendship with Together Forever – A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular

By Courtney Potter

It’s the biggest celebration of Pixar to ever come to Disney Parks, and it buzzes to life this spring! Pixar Fest, bringing together guests for a celebration of friendship and beyond, begins April 13 at the Disneyland Resort—and with it comes a brand-new fireworks spectacular; Together Forever – A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular will light up the skies over Disneyland park, connecting folks like never before to all the iconic adventures and characters they’ve come to love…

The stories of Together Forever will come to life through dazzling pyrotechnics, memorable music, and amazing projections on several legendary park locations: Sleeping Beauty Castle, the water screens of the Rivers of America, the façade of it’s a small world, and even the buildings of Main Street, U.S.A. And in the grand tradition of everyone’s favorite resident of Pixie Hollow, Tinker Bell, flying over the castle, Together Forever will feature a flyover by Buzz Lightyear himself… and—incredibly—the house from Up!

Together Forever fireworks

Just last week, D23 had the infinitely amazing opportunity to not only catch a sneak peek of Together Forever, but to also hear from the spectacular’s creative director, Susana Tubert. A theater veteran with multiple Off-Broadway credits, Susana was tasked with helping create an emotional journey told with light, music, and magic—one that begins with the meeting of unlikely pals and follows along as they overcome obstacles and form lasting relationships.

Together Forever is the crown jewel of Pixar Fest,” says Susana. “In creating the show, the team and I decided on a format that reflects this idea of a ‘visual symphony’ or journey through the five stages of friendship. We have the first movement, called ‘Chance Encounters’; the second movement [is where] the characters fall ‘in like’ and go on adventures; they overcome adversity together; they forge everlasting bonds; and then we have the finale, which is a celebration of all the Pixar friendships.”

The idea of beginning the show with a true Pixar icon was a no-brainer for Susana and her team. “We’ve started so many of our fireworks with Tinker Bell, and then we’ve had Dumbo before. It just seemed appropriate that we should find an icon that was very Pixar… Buzz Lightyear, and also Sheriff Woody, represent so much of what Pixar Fest is about… and then the house from Up just [illustrates] the emotion of so many Pixar films, right? It was very important for us to provide an emotional experience… The little house became emblematic of that everlasting relationship between two characters.”

Several recent Disney Parks fireworks spectaculars have utilized state-of-the-art projection mapping technology to make locations like Sleeping Beauty Castle and Main Street, U.S.A., come alive—and Together Forever is no exception… but this time, there’s an exciting new twist. “We’re taking Main Street and doing something slightly different,” Susana explains. “We’re showcasing the ‘sweet spots’—where things look great—with what’s happening at the castle… [The characters from] Cars are going to be racing around you on Main Street; Wall•E and Eve will be flying around you.” And don’t worry, Disney•Pixar’s latest Oscar® winner gets special Together Forever treatment too: “We’re going to take [both] Miguel and our guests from the Land of the Living to the Land of the Dead,” admits Susana. Yes, the rooftops of Main Street, U.S.A., will become the colorful, skeleton-filled bridge from the film! “It’s really quite lovely to be able to feel like you are inside the story with this new approach,” she explains.

“This show is about emotion,” she continues. “We finish with a big bang… using the metaphor of the Inside Out memory orbs to of bring it all together. These are memories we all hold dear in our hearts. It’s not just friendships among themselves, but also our friendships with these memories—with these films.”

Don’t miss Together Forever – A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular, debuting at Disneyland park on April 13!

The Film’s Cast and Crew Reveals Everything You Need to Know about A Wrinkle in Time

By Jocelyn Buhlman

Last week, the cast and crew of Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time got together for a global press conference of cosmic proportions, sharing behind-the-scenes facts and secrets about the film. A panel comprised of Oprah Winfrey (Mrs. Which), Reese Witherspoon (Mrs. Whatsit), Mindy Kaling (Mrs. Who), director Ava DuVernay, Storm Reid (Meg Murry), Chris Pine (Mr. Murry),  Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Mrs. Murray),  Zach Galifianakis (Happy Medium), Rowan Blanchard (Veronica Kiley), Deric McCabe (Charles Wallace Murray) and Levi Miller (Calvin) gave us the inside scoop on this mind-bending film.

A Wrinkle in Time

This film is for everyone.
Director Ava DuVernay created this movie with a specific audience in mind. “This is a film for young people and people who are young at heart. And for me [as I approached directing the film], I had to ask myself, do I still have a heart, first of all? And is there an inner child still in me? Did I tap into the 11-year-old, the 12-year-old, the 13-year-old in me, and find that light that I used to have, that dreamer?”

A Wrinkle in Time

Storm Reid isn’t nervous for her film debut.
The young actress admitted she wasn’t nervous yet for her debut role, but she was waiting for the nerves to set in later: “I think I’ll be a little bit nervous [when the film comes out] because I feel like this is our thing that we created and we love it so much and it’s so great, but we’re giving it to people for them to criticize it—for them to either like it or love it or not like it at all. So that’s a little bit nerve-wracking, but I feel like we did a good job and I’m really proud of us.”

A Wrinkle in Time

This movie will mean a lot to kids.
DuVernay put herself in the shoes of young kids who will be watching the film: “Imagine if you’ve only been on the earth for 10 years, and 11 years, and 12 years, the tension that you feel, and being able to just give that a little breather by saying, ‘Who you are is enough,’ and ‘You’re going to make it through by finding something in yourself that guides you.’ We all have that little voice inside of us, and a lot of times we don’t listen to it.”

A Wrinkle in Time

In the beginning, Oprah just wanted to go to New Zealand.
Winfrey, a close friend of the director, initially sparked to the idea of A Wrinkle in Time as a chance to do some world travelling: “When I heard that she [DuVernay] was going to be filming in New Zealand, I said to her, ‘I’m going. I’m just going to go.’And she goes, ‘What do you mean, go?’ I go, ‘I’m just going to go hang out with you for however long it takes, I’m going to block it on my schedule, I’m going to be there, I’m going to watch you shoot and say, ‘action.’ …And [DuVernay] said, ‘Well, why not take a look at the script? I’ve been wanting to ask you to do this, but I didn’t want to pressure you because of our friendship.’” And the rest, as they say, is history.

A Wrinkle in Time

This is a movie for boys, too.
While Meg Murry and her adventures are at the center of A Wrinkle in Time, Galifianakis emphasized that the movie is for all kids, not just girls. “It’s nice for young boys, young men even, to see that it is OK to have a sensitive side,” the actor said. “It’s time for balance. I think that’s what the happy medium is.”

A Wrinkle in Time

Rowan Blanchard was excited to play a bully.
While we are used to seeing Blanchard in roles similar to Riley on Girl Meets World, the young actress leapt at the chance to play a mean girl. “I always looked at bullies as very one-dimensional characters, especially girl bullies. It’s very stereotypical to see girls have catfights or fight over stupid things and hate each other. I was interested in approaching Veronica and Meg’s relationship in a way where I was able to recognize the complexities of what it means to be the bully… I think that between women, especially between young women, there’s so much competition that’s bred outside of their relationships interpersonally.”

A Wrinkle in Time

Chris Pine learned a lot from working with Storm Reid.
Pine truly enjoyed his role as a father in this film, and he explained that acting with children reminds him to always continue to learn: “That was lovely working with Storm, because she’s such an authentic human and such an authentic actress. I think one of the great things that I loved about this film is this idea of re-parenting. I think as kids, we’re taught that there’s some sort of hierarchical structure where adults are, by virtue of their age, smarter than we as children are—where we forget that a lot of dumb kids grow up to be dumb adults.”

A Wrinkle in Time

This was a dream-come-true for Mindy Kaling.
Longtime science fiction fan Kaling was excited to bring something to the big screen that she herself never had as a child: “I never saw any representation of a dark-skinned Indian woman in anything that I saw. And it’s a really peculiar thing when you grow up loving something that shows you no love back. It’s such a pure love, because you’re not getting anything from it. To be part of this—and to be on a green-screen stage in harnesses because you’re doing a science fiction fantasy movie—it’s so fun because I finally feel welcomed with open arms to something that has ignored me completely. And that is so profound, and I think if that can be something that the miniature version of me could watch and be excited by, I think that’s such a huge thing.”

A Wrinkle in Time

This is a movie about hope.
The movie’s tagline and main theme is summed up by Winfrey’s character, Mrs. Which, as she reminds Meg to “be a warrior.” Winfrey expanded upon that idea and what it means, for not just the film, but for our own lives: “If we turned all the lights off in this room, and just one person held a candle, you would start to dissipate the darkness. You would banish the darkness. And look at how much darkness it would take to actually engulf all the light that every candle would hold in this room. It just takes a little bit of light. Just a little bit of light. That’s what we’re hoping for. A little bit of light. We’re looking for warriors who can bring back hope.”

Meet American Idol’s Music Director

By Courtney Potter

“This… is American Idol.” Four words that became synonymous with TV’s most widely recognized, and arguably most successful, music competition series. True “appointment television”—shepherded along by super-host Ryan Seacrest—during which family and friends would gather to hear incredible live performances and vote for their favorite singer to win the ultimate prize: stardom. And now, that very series is coming to ABC…

American Idol

American Idol will once again set the gold (record) standard when it hits the ABC airwaves on Sunday, March 11, at 8 p.m. EDT. Music superstars Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie, as the show’s judges, will help to determine who America will ultimately vote for to become the next singing sensation—and Emmy® Award-winning host and producer Ryan Seacrest will return as host of the beloved series. To celebrate the show, D23 was lucky enough to sit down with its new music director, Kristopher Pooley, for some veritable Idol chatter.

A music producer, live music director, and multi-instrumentalist, Pooley is now tasked with working with each Idol contestant to create song arrangements; leading the show’s live band; and helping to guide and advise the contestants along their musical journey… and if his upbringing is any indication, it’s a job he’s especially well-suited for. “I grew up playing in my parents’ wedding band,” admits Pooley. “I spent 10 years playing cover songs four hours a night—at weddings, corporate parties, all that kind of stuff. At that time, it was just making a living with them and learning music—of course I was studying music too, going to school for it—[but] to learn all of those songs, and now I’m playing them again on American Idol! Sometimes I’ll get a list of songs we’re doing, and it’ll crack me up because I’ll have done a lot of the songs in my parents’ band, years ago.”

American Idol

But it’s not just his party-band background that lends itself so perfectly to this new “gig”—Pooley’s music career is truly varied, shifting from producing tunes for The Glee Project, American Horror Story, and even a Super Bowl Halftime show… to playing with luminaries like Melissa Etheridge, Smashing Pumpkins, and Jane’s Addiction… to arranging and music directing live shows for superstars like Gwen Stefani, Demi Lovato, Idol alum Adam Lambert, and even new Idol judge Katy Perry. As Pooley explains, “The last 15 years of my career, I’ve been mostly working in pop music. It’s a pretty easy transition to go from that to a show like Idol,”  explains. “What my career has done is help me, I think, understand modern pop music—understand what people are listening to, and understand how music is perceived… You see what works, what people respond to.”

“I’ve been working on Idol now for six weeks, with the contestants,” Pooley continues. “There’s a whole set of vocal coaches that are the ‘initial point of contact,’ to work out [music] keys and what sounds best with their voice, technically. Then it comes to me, and we figure out how that translates to a live band, and what kind of arrangement we’re going to do.” And it’s those performances that Pooley has found the most memorable, thus far in the process: “I’m big on logistics,” he admits. “I’m thinking about it in very technical terms—how many hours it will take [to] put this together. But then once you actually start playing music, it becomes a musical moment. All of the other aspects of the show—the competition side, the TV side, all of that—just disappear way into the periphery… We’ve had some experiences recently, where we get done with a song that’s really touching and the band is all teary-eyed. We’re trying to not look at each other, trying to be cool. But it’s a real moment… That’s been very unexpected.”

American Idol’s move to ABC and joining the Disney family, is definitely not lost on Pooley—the father of an 8-year-old daughter. “I think it’s great! I am steeped in Disney, for the last six years especially,” he confesses. “I’ve had interactions in the past, working with different artists [within] Disney, and [working on] different shows… [but] it’s interesting now that I’m a part of the family that’s making content for people like her. I think about it in those terms.”

American Idol

Ultimately, Pooley says, “The goal of the show is to find a great singer, and someone that can be a real artist… Anyone can make someone sound good at any point in the recording process, once you get out into the world. But the goal of the show, from my perspective, is to actually generate real music moments—to do something creative, to do something that’s fun. The band and I are always talking. Even after we wrapped this week, they all keep texting me saying, ‘That was so much fun, to make music in that way, and to have all those moments’… It’s been a surprise, quite honestly, that it’s been as much fun as it is, and that there’s as much heart to the whole process.”

American Idol debuts on ABC this Sunday, with another new episode on Monday, March 12, at 8 p.m. EDT. And remember to keep your eyes peeled for Pooley and his band as the season progresses…

Star Wars Rebels

Here are all the behind-the-scenes stories and secrets we learned from the cast and crew…

Star Wars Rebels

We finally know who the voice of Chopper is.
One of the show’s biggest mysteries actually existed outside the Star Wars universe—just who provided the beeps and boops of the loveable but cranky droid Chopper. The end credits to the finale revealed the truth—he was voiced by none other than Dave Filoni himself! “I had a lot of people attempt to do it,” he explained, “but I was like, ‘Guys, guys, no. Chopper’s a likeable jerk. Let me show you.’” As a result, Filoni provided the initial voice for the droid, intending to find a replacement voice actor later, but he ended up being a perfect match for the cranky droid.

Tiya Sircar was the only cast member who knew how the show ended.
The most emotionally impactful part of the finale episode was, for many fans, Sabine Wren’s ending voiceover narration explaining the characters’ fates. As a result, Sircar was the only one who knew exactly how the show would end. Sircar recalled, “First of all, I was shocked that Dave Filoni entrusted me with that information. I did not tell a soul, which was very difficult!” And Sircar was put to the test. She remembered, “We recorded our last episode all together, and then I stayed behind and recorded my part and was sobbing, and then we had our big wrap party directly after that!” But Filoni’s trust was well-placed—the remaining cast was just as shocked by the ending as the fans in the audience.

The ending was always supposed to be happy.
For years, fans of Star Wars Rebels have all been asking the same question: If none of these characters appear in Star Wars: A New Hope, and all the Jedi have been wiped out, what is going to happen to our heroes? While the animated series Forces of Destiny and certain Easter eggs in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story confirmed that Hera and Chopper make it out alive, the fates of the rest of the cast had fans worried they would need to bring a lot of tissues to the finale… Filoni, however, never had that worry.

“So many people are obsessed with everyone dying, and I was bewildered by it!,” he explained with a laugh, adding, “I’ve seen the original Star Wars trilogy that people like so much, and it’s not like a ‘death count’ type of movie-making. It’s a rather positive outcome, which I enjoy.”

While fans may have thought a dark ending was a forgone conclusion, to Filoni the idea of a happy ending was necessary to the narrative of Star Wars Rebels. So seeing Ahsoka return to lead Sabine on the quest for Ezra made perfect sense.

“I always like that in stories,” he said, “One thing ends, and another one begins, and it continues. And that’s a saga.”

What will happen to Ahsoka and Sabine?
Of course, the new story that began at Star Wars Rebels’ end was one that fans are already hoping will become a new show. When asked if we’d ever get to see a TV show of Ahsoka and Sabine searching for Ezra, Filoni jokingly asked to massive cheers from the crowd, “Would you watch that show?”

The answer is, of course, a resounding “Yes!” Will it happen? Filoni was tight-lipped. “Obviously, it’d be intriguing,” he said, “It’d make a good story… We’ll see.”

The whole cast was emotional by the ending.
The screening was not only the first viewing for the fans in attendance—this was also the first time the cast got to watch the finale in full. Filoni loved every moment of it, saying, “It’s kinda funny to watch you guys. I’m really enjoying it.”

The ending brought out the emotions from every member of the cast, but it was Gray who explained best why the series had such a big impact on both the cast and the fans. He shared, “When you have a lot of people banding together for the right thing, you can move mountains. And I think that’s what Star Wars is all about.”

What Filoni learned from George Lucas…
While this was Filoni’s second animated series about the Star Wars universe, this was his first time creating it without the help of George Lucas. Filoni worked with Lucas while helming Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and credits the Disney Legend for much of his own ability to create Star Wars stories.

Filoni explained, “I believe very strongly that Star Wars is a cultural phenomenon because George knew what he was doing. That’s what Rebels taught to me, that I had to pass on everything I learned.”

Just like all of the fans out there, Filoni can’t help but be in awe of the phenomenon that Lucas started: “It’s a special thing, Star Wars. It’s a limitless galaxy of imagination.”
