Marvel's Spider-Man

Disney XD Orders Third Season of Marvel’s Spider-Man

Are your “spidey” senses a-tinglin’? Well, we know why—it’s because Disney XD just ordered a third season of its Emmy® Award-winning animated series Marvel’s Spider-Man, set for a spring 2020 debut.

The web-slinging series follows teenager Peter Parker (voice of Robbie Daymond) as he learns to navigate life as Spider-Man. In this upcoming third season, known as Marvel’s Spider-Man: Maximum Venom, Spider-Man is pushed to his breaking point when the evil Venom summons an earth-shattering threat from its home planet.

But that’s not all: New Season two episodes of Marvel’s Spider-Man will debut in September on Disney XD and DisneyNOW, beginning with a five-part “Superior Spider-Man” story arc. In the new storyline, Doctor Octopus (voice of Scott Menville), who has taken over Spider-Man’s body, intends to use his new spider powers to further his nefarious agenda.

Watch this space for more web-slinging Marvel’s Spider-Man news in the coming months!

Fantasy Springs

New Themed Port at Tokyo DisneySea Gets Its Name

It’s known as a “bucket list” Disney Parks visit, with its totally unique ports and attractions you can’t find anywhere else on the planet… and now, its eighth port has an official name. That’s right: The newest Tokyo DisneySea port, announced last summer as part of the park’s largest ever expansion, has been named Fantasy Springs! Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger recently attended a special groundbreaking ceremony with Toshio Kagami, Chairman & CEO of Oriental Land Company, in order to break the big news.

Scheduled to open in fiscal year 2022 (which, for Tokyo DisneySea, runs from April 2022 to March 2023), this new port is themed after a spring that leads to a world of Disney fantasy—with three areas inspired by the beloved Disney films Frozen, Tangled, and Peter Pan. Guests will discover waterfalls and ponds flowing with magical waters, as well as four new attractions, three restaurants, and a brand-new hotel located inside Tokyo DisneySea that will overlook Fantasy Springs.

Keep your eyes peeled in the coming months for more Fantasy Springs and Tokyo DisneySea updates…

Need a Few Reasons to Visit Disney’s Wilderness Lodge?

Disney’s Wilderness Lodge is one of the most unique properties at Walt Disney World—and it’s a fan-favorite for good reason. For the past 25 years, it’s given guests a little slice of turn-of-the-century national park splendor smack in the middle of Central Florida! D23 recently picked a few Wilderness Lodge “hidden gems”; read up about ‘em by clicking here.

Sleeping Beauty Castle Disneyland

Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland Park is Beautifully Back

After a months-long refurbishment, Sleeping Beauty Castle inside Disneyland park—truly some of the most iconic architecture in Disney history—is once again welcoming guests! The beloved, beautiful icon now features a new roof, vibrant new colors, and some charming pixie dust… among a host of other enhancements.

Over the years, the colors and finishes on Sleeping Beauty Castle have been refreshed and updated since Walt Disney Imagineering artist (and Disney Legend) Herb Ryman first created the concept illustration of the castle in the 1950s. In honor of the castle’s reopening, Disneyland Resort made a donation to Ryman Arts—a charity founded in Herb Ryman’s memory that teaches classical drawing and painting to high school students in Southern California. Additionally, the resort planted a dwarf fir tree in his honor; the “Ryman Tree” recalls a Christmas tree that belonged to the artist the last year of his life, that was once planted near the castle after his passing.

Make sure to visit Sleeping Beauty Castle during your next Disneyland sojourn!

The New Descendants 3 Music Video Proves It’s “Good to Be Bad”

By Zach Johnson

TGIF, indeed!

A month after we teased the premiere month for Disney Channel’s Descendants 3 (which will be simulcast on DisneyNOW), we now have an exact date and time: Friday, August 2, at 8 p.m.! To celebrate the news, Walt Disney Records just shared the new “Good to Be Bad” music video. Starring the core four—Mal (Dove Cameron), Carlos (Cameron Boyce), Evie (Sofia Carson), and Jay (Booboo Stewart)—the rallying anthem is available to stream on DisneyMusicVEVO and to download as a single. The soundtrack is also available for pre-order on digital music platforms.

“Good to Be Bad” serves as the opening number in the highly anticipated “three-quel.” The all-new adventure begins on “VK Day,” with the open-minded Villain Kids (aka The VKs) crossing the barrier and returning to the Isle of the Lost. Their goal is simple: Bring four deserving VKs back to Auradon Prep and give them a fresh start, just as King Ben (Mitchell Hope) once did for them. But to everyone’s surprise, Mal decides to close the barrier permanently, fearing her nemeses Uma (China Anne McClain) and Hades (Cheyenne Jackson) might team up to destroy her new home, the idyllic kingdom ruled by her beloved boyfriend. Despite Mal’s decision, a dark and mysterious force threatens the people of Auradon—and it’s up to The VKs to stop it.

Emmy® and DGA Award winner Kenny Ortega—who will be honored as a Disney Legend at the D23 Expo 2019 during a special award ceremony hosted by Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger—returned to direct the new movie. He also choreographed Descendants 3 with Jamal Sims.

Written by WGA Award winners Sara Parriott and Josann McGibbon, Descendants 3 welcomes back actors Thomas Doherty as Harry Hook, Dylan Playfair as Gil, Anna Cathcart as Dizzy, Sarah Jeffery as Audrey, Jedidiah Goodacre as Chad Charming, Zachary Gibson as Doug, Brenna D’Amico as Jane, Judith Maxie as Queen Leah, Dan Payne as Beast, Keegan Connor Tracy as Belle and Melanie Paxson as Fairy Godmother. Newcomers to the ensemble include Jadah Marie as Celia, Sims as Dr. Facilier, Christian Convery as Squeaky and Luke Roessler as Squirmy.

As we count down the days until Descendants 3 premieres, join us in watching a behind-the-scenes video of the making of “Good to Be Bad,” featuring appearances by the cast and crew:

We Just Can’t Wait to See King

By Max Lark

Viewed from the outside, the ordinary box of a building in Playa Vista, California, where director Jon Favreau and the rest of his production team are busy at work on the upcoming Favreau-directed version of The Lion King seems the most pedestrian of places to bring roaring back to life one of the most beloved films in the Disney canon. But inside, Favreau and company have created a state-of-the-art, purpose-built studio, one where advanced VR (virtual-reality) and live-action filmmaking techniques meet photorealistic computer-generated animation to tell this timeless story in an all-new way.

Caleb Deschanel and Jon Favreau
Award-winning cinematographer Caleb Deschanel and Favreau discuss a scene from The Lion King.

Favreau’s career has been in full-throttle ascent since appearing on TV shows such as Seinfeld and Friends and movies such as Rudy (1993) and PCU (1994). His big break came with the indie film Swingers (1996), which he wrote, starred in, and co-produced. In 2003 he directed the Will Ferrell hit Elf, and went on to direct and produce major box-office hit films for The Walt Disney Studios. His directing credits include Iron Man (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), and The Jungle Book (2016). In addition to working on The Lion King, Favreau is currently writing and executive producing the live-action Star Wars television series for the new Disney+ streaming service, The Mandalorian. He was recently named a Disney Legend and will be inducted in August at D23 Expo 2019 in Anaheim, California. The man’s on a roll.

For someone who could be excused for feeling a little pressure, Favreau, dressed casually in khakis and navy blue polo shirt, stands in the center of the warehouse-sized set appearing focused rather than frantic. He says that The Lion King “has the feeling of a live-action shoot, because that’s the way I learned to direct. It wasn’t sitting in a chair, looking over somebody’s shoulder or at a computer. I’m used to being in a real location, and there’s something about being in a real 3D environment that gets my brain firing.”

In addition to using photorealistic computer-generated animation to create this visually majestic film, the latest in VR technology is used primarily to convey that live-action feeling. Virtual sets are designed and created on a computer. Then, using VR technology, virtual environments are constructed that let filmmakers go virtually on to a set, say the Pride Rock set—and scout the environment and set up shots, almost as if they were really in Africa.

The Lion King

“A lot of doing a movie is just walking around, and talking, and so there might be as many as six of us [on the VR stage] wearing goggles talking about a shot. You have the same communication, the same chain of command, the same rhythm to the day.”

Favreau says the new Lion King cleaves largely to the animated film. “We are working off a story that works really well, but the more we looked at, the more we challenged the story. There were certain things that needed addressing to make it feel more appropriate to this medium, but as far as the characters, the story, the themes, the music, we really felt that people were very connected to the original, and so hopefully if you are a fan of the original you will look at our film and say, ‘I feel like I saw The Lion King.’”

Favreau thinks The Lion King’s timelessness makes it the perfect story for new adaptations. “When you see the stage play, you still feel a connection to the animated film,” he says. “Both exist with very close storylines and much of the same music, just different people are playing the characters in a different medium. They don’t seem redundant. You can see the animated film, and you can see the stage show, and love both of them and see them as two different things. The challenge for us is to create something that feels like a completely different medium than those two productions.”

The Lion King

In the end, Favreau hopes The Lion King feels emotionally as realistic as if audiences were watching live creatures. “That’s the trick here,” he says. “Because I don’t think anyone wants to see another animated Lion King, because [that film] still holds up really, really well. Doing The Jungle Book gave me a lot of encouragement. I saw The Lion King as a great opportunity to springboard, refine the tools, and tackle this beloved story in a new way.”

Hidden Gems and Attention to Detail Create Authenticity in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

By Jim Frye

With more than four decades of films, television series, novels, comic books, video games, and more, Star Wars has a deep history that has inspired generations of devoted fans. In creating Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Walt Disney Imagineers and Lucasfilm were driven to fulfill the dreams of anyone who ever imagined visiting this galaxy far, far away by telling new stories that feel authentically Star Wars.

Star Wars: A New Hope, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: The Force Awakens

When Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens May 31, 2019, at Disneyland Park in California and August 29, 2019, at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida, guests will find these lands filled with rich details meticulously researched and crafted by Imagineers and Lucasfilm. Though the planet Batuu and its Black Spire Outpost may be new to fans, this setting offers a genuine Star Wars experience for all who enter as they discover a plethora of hidden gems and other details drawn from across the galaxy.

Hondo and a Wampa at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge

Hidden Gems to Look for in the Land
Keep your eyes peeled for some of these small details and hidden gems. While Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is set during the current trilogy of Star Wars films, the land features elements representing many different eras of the Star Wars universe.

  • Several creatures seen throughout the land will be familiar to some fans, such as the dianoga from the Death Star trash compactor in Star Wars: A New Hope found in a tank above a Black Spire Outpost drinking fountain, or the taxidermic wampa from the ice planet Hoth in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back in Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities.
  • A podracing engine in the Ronto Roasters market stall calls back to Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, while the former smelter droid turning the spit of meats is similar to a droid seen in Jabba the Hutt’s palace in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.
  • A mural on the wall of Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities depicts an ancient battle between the light and dark sides of the Force. The original bas-relief of this mural was seen in Chancellor Palpatine’s office in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.
  • Hondo Ohnaka, best known from the Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels animated television series, gives guests their mission in Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run.

Additionally, Batuu’s landscape is dotted with tall petrified tree trunks. As a matter of fact, Black Spire Outpost takes its name from a trunk in the center of the village that is darker than all the others.

Look down while you’re visiting. Imagineers took rubbings from the feet of the R2-D2 droid used in Star Wars: A New Hope and turned those into a set of three-dimensional wheels. They then built a trolley with those wheels and rolled it through the land before the concrete pathways fully dried to leave behind authentic droid tracks that guests might spot as they explore the outpost.

A Crash of Fate book cover

It’s All About the Story
One reason Imagineers set Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge on a planet never before seen in the Star Wars universe was to give everyone a chance to step into the story at their own levels—whether a guest is a lifelong Star Wars fan or has never watched a Star Wars film, everyone will be seeing Batuu for the first time. But what’s interesting is that Batuu and its residents are starting to inspire other Star Wars stories:

  • Both Black Spire Outpost and Dok-Ondar were referenced in Solo: A Star Wars Story.
  • Characters in the Timothy Zahn novel Thrawn: Alliances visit Oga’s Cantina.
  • Star Wars: Pirate’s Price, a young-adult novel by Lou Anders, details a previous trip Hondo Ohnaka made to Batuu.
  • A five-issue Marvel comics series, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, debuted in April and delves into some of the famous antiquities found in Dok-Ondar’s shop on Batuu.
  • Galaxy’s Edge: Black Spire, a novel by Delilah S. Dawson set for release in August, will tell the story of Vi Moradi, Leia Organa’s top spy, who chooses Batuu for the Resistance’s secret command post (guests may encounter Vi as they explore Black Spire Outpost).
  • Also due in August, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge – A Crash of Fate by Zoraida Cordova is a young-adult novel about two childhood friends from Batuu who are reunited later in life and have a series of adventures.

During Star Wars Celebration 2019, April 11-15 in Chicago, many attendees who visited the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge booth recorded video testimonials sharing their personal Star Wars stories. These videos were embedded into a Jedi holocron that will be placed inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida.

Princess Leia Organa

Attention to Detail

  • The land was designed with sightlines that evoke cinematic angles. Guests begin with views of wide vistas, then as they explore deeper into the land, their field of vision narrows into tighter spaces—like zooming in for a close-up.
  • In developing props and other décor for the land, Imagineers tried whenever possible to use pre-1980 materials to best capture the look and feel of the props in the first Star Wars films (Star Wars: A New Hope was released in 1977).
  • In search of aesthetic inspiration for the land, Walt Disney Imagineers visited George Lucas’ private archives in California to study original Star Wars concept artwork created by Ralph McQuarrie, the artist who helped Lucas shape the look of the Star Wars They also traveled to Morocco and Turkey to experience ancient open-air markets. These sources provided Black Spire Outpost’s authentically earthy, yet otherworldly environment.
  • To ensure authenticity in their designs for the land, Imagineers also visited active Star Wars film sets in the United Kingdom. There they studied everything from ships to costumes to props to help inform their work on Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
  • In developing merchandise for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Imagineers were granted access to the Lucasfilm archives to study original props and costumes. In many cases, a special scanning tool was used to take 360-degree digital pictures of these artifacts, then 3D prints were made of new models for items sold in the lands.
  • To re-create Princess Leia Organa’s iconic necklace worn at the end of Star Wars: A New Hope, Disney reached out to the original European designer, who still had the piece’s mold from four decades ago. That mold was then used to create the new item, available now at Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities.
  • The soldier’s ration kit offered in Resistance Supply is based off of Luke Skywalker’s kit from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Disney asked actor and Disney Legend Mark Hamill (who played Luke Skywalker in the film) what he remembered was in his original kit and re-created some of those items in the version for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
  • The Jedi robes and tunics available for purchase in Black Spire Outfitters are modeled after the costumes for Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.
  • The interactive experience in the Droid Depot is inspired, in part, by young Anakin Skywalker tinkering with C-3PO in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.
  • The guest experience inside Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers draws some of its inspiration from episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, where Jedi younglings learn how to build their own lightsabers.

Don’t Miss These 10 Experiences in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

By Zach Johnson

Unlike Han Solo, we’ve got a good feeling about this.

Spanning more than 14 acres, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is the largest single-themed land in Disney Parks history, packed with immersive storytelling that allows guests to live their own Star Wars adventures. “At the heart of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is this fundamental truth: We all have the power to be a hero, making choices that change the course of the galaxy,” says Scott Trowbridge, Star Wars Portfolio Creative Executive, Walt Disney Imagineering. “Whether you’re a lowly moisture farmer on some remote planet or an orphan sitting in a pile of dirt just trying to scrape by, every individual has the power to change the universe.” With so much to take in when the land opens May 31, 2019, at Disneyland Park in California and August 29, 2019, at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida, make sure to enjoy these 10 guest experiences:

Millennium Falcon: Smuggler's Run1. Fly the “Fastest Hunk of Junk in the Galaxy” in Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run
Strap into the Millennium Falcon cockpit and take the controls as either a pilot, a gunner, or a flight engineer on a mission to deliver smuggled goods—all while avoiding any unnecessary entanglements. “The level of guest participation in Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run is different from anything we’ve done before. You’re not merely a passenger along for a ride, but rather the protagonist of the adventure,” Asa Kalama, Executive Creative Director, Walt Disney Imagineering, explains. “The story unfolds around you and responds to the way you engage it.”

Black Spire Outpost outfit2. Discover the Black Spire Outpost Marketplace
Here you’ll find vendors showcasing wares from across the galaxy. Guests can buy authentic Batuuan attire at Black Spire Outfitters, start a collection of rare artifacts at Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities, or peek into the cages in the Creature Stall. The marketplace’s twisting pathway is just waiting to be explored, with something new to see around every corner. “When you have a film, it’s a closed experience. You get to the end, and it’s over. At Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, it’s about being expansive over time; it has a richness of discovery and the idea of possibility,” Carrie Beck, Vice President, Development, Lucasfilm, says. “That platform is filled with narrative and play, so guests will want to come back over and over—and have a variety of experiences.”

Blue and Green Milk3. Take a Swig of Blue Milk
Ever since Luke Skywalker sat down for a family meal in Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), fans have wondered what blue milk tastes like. At Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, their question will be answered. The Milk Stand in the Black Spire Outpost marketplace offers both Blue and Green Milk (as seen in Star Wars: The Last Jedi)—two tasty frozen blends with vaguely fruity accents.

Ronto Roasters4. Grab a Bite to Go at Ronto Roasters
Whether it’s the large podracing engine hanging overhead or the former smelter droid turning a spit of meats, Ronto Roasters is sure to grab guests’ attention. This marketplace stall offers mouthwatering Ronto Wraps and sweet-or-spicy Nuna Turkey Jerky, plus specialty beverages.

Design your own lightsaber5. Design a Lightsaber at Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers
All Padawans know constructing a lightsaber is a rite of passage in the life of a Jedi, as this elegant weapon from a more civilized age is attuned to its wielder through the Force. Guests in Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers will feel the presence of the Force as they craft their very own lightsabers, customizing them with various hilts, décor, and, of course, kyber crystals. “Savi’s Workshop is part interactive experience, part show, and part retail. It’s what I think we do best when all of our lines of business—merchandise, story, special effects, entertainment, and so many more—come to the table and we craft an experience together,” Chris Beatty, Executive Creative Director, Walt Disney Imagineering, says. “We’re excited because you actually build the lightsaber you’ve always wanted, crafting it uniquely for you, one of a kind.”

Droid Depot at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge6. Build a Droid Inside the Droid Depot
From R2-D2 to BB-8, droids can be some of the most loyal companions in the entire Star Wars galaxy. Now, guests have the chance to build and customize their own astromech friends at the Droid Depot. Patrons pick pieces and parts off a conveyor belt to construct one of two core models (R-series or BB-series), which can then interact with elements throughout the new land.

7. Drop by for a Drink at Oga’s Cantina
The heartbeat of Black Spire Outpost, this notorious watering hole is a place where even the blaster-bolt scorches on the walls tell a story. Here, guests can gather to share their own tales from around the galaxy as they enjoy exotic beverages served in unique vessels and listen to musical entertainment from DJ R-3X, the former droid pilot from Star Tours in Tomorrowland. “Our goal was to create a place so authentic—so real—that when our guests step inside, they feel like they’re in a Star Wars movie. To do this, we had to partner with the team at Lucasfilm in bringing these films to life,” Beatty says. “Together, Walt Disney Imagineering and Lucasfilm have crafted a place that is going to amaze our guests—a place they’ve never seen before.”

PlayDisney Parks App8. Hack Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge with the Play Disney Parks Mobile App
When accessed inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, the app transforms guests’ mobile devices, allowing them to scan the contents hidden inside containers, translate languages, and eavesdrop on local communications. “We have amazing technology that will enable Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge to become a living land. One way we’re doing this is with the Play Disney Parks app. It’s available for download now, and it will be your very own Star Wars: Datapad,” Kalama says. “As guests visit us at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, their mobile devices will be transformed into this amazing in-story tool. Using its four functions, you can interact with and unlock another level of storytelling right here at Black Spire Outpost.” Guests can also use this tool to hack into droids and door panels (what locals call “slicing”) to unlock additional stories.

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge9. Support the Resistance or the First Order to Gain Outpost Control
Using the Play Disney Parks mobile app, guests can play together in a game called “Outpost Control” that takes place across the land. Guests can choose to support either the Resistance or the First Order by hacking the blinking light panels next to doorways throughout Black Spire Outpost. The faction that controls the majority of these panels first wins the game and proves their allegiance to their side’s cause. The conflict will play out several times throughout the day.

10. Be on the Lookout for Familiar Star Wars Characters
Guests should keep their eyes open for heroes of the Resistance or agents of the First Order. Supreme Leader Kylo Ren lands at Black Spire Outpost and gathers Stormtroopers to help him hunt for Resistance fighter Rey, for example, while Millennium Falcon co-pilot Chewbacca and Resistance spy Vi Moradi will also roam the new land. “Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge redefines what a Disney experience can be,” Trowbridge explains. “It invites exploration and discovery, where we can become characters in the Star Wars galaxy. More and more, our guests want to lean into these stories; not just be a spectator. We’re giving them the opportunity to do just that in this land, with a new level of detail and immersion. Explore Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and All Its Starships and Speeders

By Zach Johnson

One step inside the Millennium Falcon and you’ll likely find yourself quoting Han Solo and telling a friend, “Chewie, we’re home.” Starships and other vehicles play pivotal roles in every Star Wars story—and in Disney Parks’ Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, planet Batuu’s landscape is populated with a range of transportation vehicles, including iconic ships and practical speeders.

With both the Resistance and First Order establishing bases on the planet, evidence of their arrival permeates Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge (just take a look at the starfighters and transport shuttles). But Black Spire Outpost is also a community full of residents just trying to go about their daily lives, so their transportation is represented, too—and everything is built at full scale.

Before Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens May 31, 2019, at Disneyland Park in California and August 29, 2019, at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida, learn about the ships and speeders:

A-wing Starfighter
Location: Resistance Mobile Command Post
Description: With its sleek arrowhead shape, streamlined cockpit, and massive twin engines, the A-wing suggests raw speed. Used first by the Rebel Alliance and now the Resistance, it is well suited for quick strikes.

First Order TIE echelon
Location: Docking Bay 9 (First Order Encampment)
Description: A new assault vehicle in the TIE (twin ion engine) series, this echelon shuttle is used by the First Order mainly for small troop and cargo transport.

Landspeeders
Location: Black Spire Station
Description: There are two models of speeders in for repairs in the garage at Black Spire Station: an X-34 model, similar to one Luke Skywalker uses in Star Wars: A New Hope, and a Jakku speeder, built from scavenged parts.

Millennium Falcon Interior

Millennium Falcon
Location: Spaceport
Description: Sometimes lovingly referred to as “the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy,” the YT-1300 Corellian freighter is currently being loaned to Hondo Ohnaka, the former pirate who owns and operates Ohnaka Transport Solutions.

Sienar-Chall Utilipede-Transport
Location: Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo
Description: Chef Strono “Cookie” Tuggs uses this modified shuttle as a mobile kitchen and restaurant, jumping from one planet to the next as a “traveling diner for diners traveling.” It’s currently atop Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo, turning the hangar into a dining establishment.

X-Wing Fighter Plane

X-wing Starfighter
Location: Resistance Mobile Command Post
Description: A versatile ship balancing speed and firepower, the X-wing is a nimble starfighter used in dogfights first by the Rebel Alliance and now the Resistance. Its name comes from the “X” its four wings create when they’re locked in attack position.

7 Surprising Stats and Fascinating Facts from Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

By Beth Deitchman

A long time ago—specifically, when Star Wars: A New Hope was released—we first dreamed of visiting a galaxy far, far away and getting a sense of what it would be like to wield a lightsaber or soar on the Millennium Falcon. On May 31, that dream becomes a reality with the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland park: The ultimate Star Wars adventure is about to begin—and you are at the center of it! As you prepare for your inaugural trip to Batuu, here are just some of the amazing details behind the creation of this breathtaking new land.

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge

1. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is the largest-ever single-themed land in Disney Parks history.
The land spans more than 14 acres in both Disneyland park and at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, where Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will open on August 29. Though nearly identical, there are three ways to enter the land at Disneyland park and two entrances at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge

2. This is the first time fans will ever see a full-size, 100-percent complete Millennium Falcon.
As you gaze upon at the “fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy” docked in Black Spire Outpost, you might marvel at its size: It’s more than 100 feet long. As you enter the Millennium Falcon, you pass through the same starboard airlock used by Han and Chewie in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge

3. There’s so much to discover around Black Spire Outpost.
The tallest of the ancient-looking spires you’ll see around the land stands at more than 130 feet high. Additionally, more than 7,000 props were created for each land.

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge

4. The possibilities are endless when it comes to customizing your experience.
If you visit Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers, you will find more than 120,000 possible combinations for constructing a lightsaber using all the available pieces. There are even more combinations in the Droid Depot, which offers nearly 280,000 ways to create an R-series or BB-series astromech droid using all the available pieces.

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge

5. You can learn a new game.
Dejarik might just become your new favorite pastime. The chess-type game is played on the table in the main hold and lounge in the Millennium Falcon, and guests can sit at the table inside Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run. Visit the Toydarian Toymaker marketplace to pick up the game, then hone your Dejarik skills at home while you plan your next journey to Batuu.

6. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge has an out-of-this-galaxy soundtrack.
Keep an ear out for an all-new suite of themes from Oscar®-winning composer John Williams, who created the new music specifically for the lands and their attractions. Inside Oga’s Cantina, look for a familiar face who’s playing a new tune (and launching a new career). DJ R-3X—formerly the Starspeeder 3000 pilot from Star Tours—is now the droid in charge of music at the local watering hole. The galactic playlist you’ll hear in Oga’s Cantina features musicians and composers from all around the world who were commissioned by Walt Disney Imagineering to craft original music for the new land.

7. Memories you can bring home with you.
The land has nine different retail locations boasting nearly 700 unique items—including a few “critters.” Visit the Creature Stall to see if you can resist the gaze of the adorable avian Porgs or the rambunctious Kowakian Monkey-Lizards. (But why would you want to?)

Creatures, Droids, and Aliens: Meet the Fantastical Figures of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

By Courtney Potter

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will welcome visitors young and young-at-heart to the galactically grand world of Black Spire Outpost on the planet Batuu—which, as you might imagine, is home to a cavalcade of creatures, from Resistance heroes to chatty droids… from space pirates to mystical proprietors… and even a few lovable aliens! Guests who visit these lands, both at Disneyland park starting Friday, May 31, and at Disney’s Hollywood Studios beginning August 29, may discover the presence of these fantastical figures as they take in the sights.

Who might you meet on your visit to Batuu? And where? Read on for more…

Characters

Chewbacca
Found at both the Resistance Encampment and at Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, this legendary Wookiee warrior (and Han Solo’s co-pilot) came to Batuu aboard the damaged Falcon. He needs special parts to fix his ship, and the Resistance needs fresh supplies—so Chewie made a deal to loan Hondo Ohnaka the Millennium Falcon for a few smuggling runs in exchange for the items he desperately needs…

Dok-Ondar

Dok-Ondar
A larger-than-life collector of all things odd and hard to find, Dok-Ondar buys, sells, and trades valuable items at his intergalactic Den of Antiquities shop. This Ithorian is a proud curator, amassing a collection that’s truly unrivaled in the galaxy. He’s also known as the “gatekeeper” of the black market in Black Spire Outpost, so locals know not to cross him. Guests can see him working at his desk—taking inventory and barking the occasional order at his assistants between incoming calls.

Oga Garra
This Blutopian crime boss of Black Spire Outpost is a mysterious figure. She is never seen, but is often heard yelling at her servers inside Oga’s Cantina. Her influence stretches throughout the outpost, as her fingers are in every business transaction… and she knows everyone coming and going.

The Gatherers
As believers in the ways of the Force, the Gatherers are a group of men and women dedicated to restoring balance in the galaxy by passing on ancient knowledge. Part of their mission is guiding the next generation of Jedi-hopefuls in building their own unique lightsabers. You can find the Gatherers at Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers.

Vi Moradi
Vi Moradi is a spy and intelligence officer for the Resistance who traveled to Batuu to scout the planet for its viability as a potential Resistance recruiting station. This strong-willed, hot-tempered, quick-witted woman is trying to stay one step ahead of the First Order while recruiting for the Resistance as she traverses the twisting pathways of Black Spire Outpost. You never know where you might see her lurking throughout the land…

Hondo Ohnaka

Hondo Ohnaka
Established in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series, Hondo Ohnaka is a Weequay pirate turned “legitimate” businessman (although most would call him a smuggler). A rough-around-the-edges rogue, he is always looking out for the next big score. Hondo founded Ohnaka Transport Solutions, which operates out of Black Spire Outpost and specializes in acquiring or delivering restricted items. In Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, he asks guests to help him acquire some prized cargo of importance to both the First Order and the Resistance. Of course, Hondo himself will be pocketing a sizeable profit along the way.

Kylo Ren

Kylo Ren
The Supreme Leader of the First Order strikes fear in the hearts of his foes with his imposing mask, long dark robes, iconic hilted red lightsaber, and notoriously violent temper. As a highly trained, Force-sensitive warrior, Kylo Ren is determined to root out the Resistance—and travels to Batuu to search for and destroy any traces he can find. He can often be found at Docking Bay 9, the First Order Encampment.

Rey
Sometime after the Battle of Crait at the conclusion of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Resistance hero Rey made her way to Batuu. Here, she leads the recruitment effort for the Resistance (based out of the Resistance Encampment) by actively inspiring supporters along the galaxy’s Outer Rim.

Zabaka
Zabaka is a Toydarian, the flying alien species first seen in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Her small Toydarian Toymaker stall has thrived in Black Spire Outpost by selling quality toys—and through her good relationships with other proprietors in town. Guests can see the silhouette of Zabaka going about her daily business through her workshop window.

CREATURES

Convor
A popular pet throughout the galaxy, Convor is a gold-and-brown plumed bird first seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. You can find Convor at the Creature Stall.

Dianoga from Star Wars: A New Hope

Dianoga
This slimy, tentacled carnivore was first seen in Star Wars: A New Hope when it attacked Luke Skywalker in the Death Star trash compactor. When guests stop for a drink at the water fountain in the Black Spire Outpost marketplace, they may see the eye of a dianoga (nicknamed “Tiny”) pop out of the water tank above! Plus, Dok-Ondar has a juvenile dianoga in a tank at his Den of Antiquities shop. Its nickname? “Toothy,” of course.

Dokma
This small, timid creature with a protective shell and two eyestalks was seen in the Star Wars Rebels animated series, and can be located at the Creature Stall.

Felucian Fireflies
These glowing creatures are native to the colorful, humid jungle planet Felucia, first seen in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith—and are found at Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities.

Fyrnock
A fierce predator typically the size of a small humanoid, this creature—found at the Creature Stall—can only survive under the cover of darkness. It lives in a dark crate at the stall and was first seen in Star Wars Rebels.

Loth-cat

Loth-cat
A sprightly feline that hunts small rodents on the grassy plains of Lothal, this lively animal is known primarily from Star Wars Rebels. At the Creature Stall, guests can see a Loth-cat’s tail sway gently as it sleeps.

Kowakian Monkey-Lizard
This reptilian creature is a favorite pet for denizens of the galaxy’s underworld, most famously Jabba the Hutt. Guests visiting the Creature Stall can see the monkey-lizard’s tail hanging from a cage… and occasionally hear its iconic high-pitched laugh. Chances are high you’ll recognize it from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi!

Momong
Also known as a Trandoshan monkey, this species of primate lives in trees and was first spied in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Guests can see its tail as it hangs from a cage in the Creature Stall.

Mynock
These “beastly things” are bat-like parasites that chew on the power cables and energy conductors of starships, as seen in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. At Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, guests may spy a mynock that’s pickled in one of the Oga’s Cantina tanks.

Ollopom
A short, gentle rodent found in the Gungan Swamps of Naboo (sometimes mistaken for a plant), guests can find an example inside Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities.

Profrogg
This large rodent—which forms complex underground burrowing systems called “towns”—has horns, a snout, super-sharp incisors, and powerful claws used for defense and digging. See a taxidermic profrogg up close at Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities.

Puffer Pig
The fact that the puffer pig is a mammalian species capable of sniffing valuable minerals makes it vital to smugglers, as seen in Star Wars Rebels. When scared, it inflates to massive proportions! Visit the Creature Stall and you might see (and hear) one!

Sarlacc Audio-Animatronic at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge

Sarlacc
This dangerous carnivore can grow to 100 meters long and likes to bury itself in sand—leaving only its huge mouth exposed to the surface, as seen in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. At Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities, the proprietor keeps his infant sarlacc in a special tank that simulates arid atmospheric conditions.

Swamp Slug
Native to the bogs of Dagobah, this creature has thousands of teeth capable of grinding up plants and animals—but not necessarily droids, as R2-D2 fortunately discovered in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Those keeping a close eye will find a swamp slug in one of the Oga’s Cantina tanks.

Wampa at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge

Wampa
This large, white, furry, carnivorous predator hails from the ice planet Hoth. It often sneaks up on prey prior to attack, as experienced by Luke in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities has a taxidermic wampa in its collection.

Womp Rat
This pest is native to Tatooine, and as Luke noted in Star Wars: A New Hope, it isn’t much bigger than two meters. Guests can see a taxidermic womp rat in Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities.

Worrt
A carnivorous amphibian typically found in the sand dunes of Tatooine, it famously made a brief cameo outside Jabba the Hutt’s palace in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. It waits for unsuspecting rodents or insects to pass by, then whips its long tongue out to snatch prey! At Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, guests can observe a worrt in one of the Oga’s Cantina tanks, as well as at the Creature Stall.

DROIDS

8D-J8
As a former smelter droid, 8D-J8 was reprogrammed to do one thing: turn the meats on the spit at Ronto Roasters, ensuring they are cooked to perfection.

DJ R-3X at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge

DJ R-3X
This former Star Tours pilot droid, known affectionately as “Rex,” crash landed on Batuu and was reprogrammed into a DJ by Mubo at the Droid Depot. Mubo gave Rex to Oga Garra to pay off a debt, and “DJ Rex” now provides the musical entertainment inside Oga’s Cantina… and he’s still as chatty as ever!

R5-P8
This sassy droid is Hondo’s most capable astromech at Spaceport, and serves as an automated repair mechanic on the smuggler’s many starships. He calls Hondo out on many occasions, always keeping the pirate on his toes.
