Q & A with Brad Meltzer, author of I am Walt Disney

Magic is everywhere, especially for Brad Meltzer. From spontaneous trips to Walt Disney World and first Disney movie experiences to a mission to give kids more—these are just some of the many inspirations behind the 18th edition of Meltzer’s bestselling biographic series. Read all about what prompted him to write I am Walt Disney and just how important it is to make these stories available for young readers.

What was it about Walt Disney that made you feel you needed to tell his story?
I started the Ordinary People Change the World series so I could give my kids better heroes to look up to—to give them lessons filled with kindness, compassion, and creativity. With I am Walt Disney, it got extra personal. Every year since my kids were little, on the way to school, I pick a random day and instead of going to school, we drive straight to Walt Disney World. I did it to show them every day can have magic. So with the book, my kids get to see someone who used his ingenuity and creativity to make real magic.

What do you think it is about Walt Disney that resonates with so many people?
Walt Disney is one of the great American success stories. He practically invented “happily ever after.” And he helped millions of people find their happy place. That’s what Walt Disney World is to me. Same with all the films. They’re my happy place from childhood. As the book says: “Your happy place never leaves you. It’s your own magic kingdom.” Think about it: We can all use some magic in our lives. If you look, it’s there. And when you let that magic into your heart… you can fly.

What do you think will surprise people about Walt Disney?
Everyone thinks of Walt Disney as a massive success—and he is—but what I loved was seeing how many times he failed. He failed, and failed, and failed again. But he never stopped chasing his dreams. We need our kids to see that.

Who was Walt Disney’s biggest supporter?
His Aunt Maggie. When Walt was little, his own father wasn’t very supportive of Walt being an artist. But his aunt… well, she’s the one who bought young Walt a drawing tablet and pencils. Aunt Maggie’s encouragement changed his life. We all owe her forever.

Why was it important to show Walt Disney as a kid and keep him looking like a kid throughout the book?
In our first book—I am Amelia Earhart —our editor originally asked us to age the character, so as Amelia Earhart got older, she’d look older. So artist Chris Eliopoulos drew that. And all the kids were BORED. For us, it’s a very conscious choice: Each book tells the story of the hero when THEY were a kid. We see them as children. So it’s not just Amelia Earhart and Abraham Lincoln being famous—it’s them being just like us. Then kids can relate. They can see that each hero was just like them. As a result, for our kids and for us, these aren’t just the stories of famous people.  They’re what we’re all capable of on our very best days.

i am walt disney comic

How do you go about doing the research for the book?
In this case, the archivists in the Walt Disney Archives were AMAZING. They gave us access to documents I’d never seen. I also reached out to biographers, researchers, anyone who has a specialty in the subject. And sometimes, like with I am Jane Goodall, well… Jane Goodall helped. 🙂

What was the best part about working on the book?
Watching my kids enjoy it. That’s the mission. The same mission Walt Disney himself had. When I was 5 years old, people like Walt Disney, Jim Henson, and Mr. Rogers taught me you could use your creativity to put good into this world. That’s all we’re trying to do with the I am books—using our creativity to put more good into the world. I can’t ask for more.

i am walt disney cover

What’s your favorite Disney movie and/or Disney character?
The first movie I ever remember seeing in a theater was a re-release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. My grandfather Ben took me—and he was one of my heroes. He used to tell me bedtime stories since he knew I loved stories. So that’s always a soft spot for me. That’s my happy place.

Inside the Making of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

By Zach Johnson

When JJ Abrams called up Chris Terrio and asked him to co-write the script for what would become Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (in theaters Friday), Terrio was excited, honored… and terrified. Saying yes meant he would not only be tying up the sequel trilogy, which began with 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but he would also be ending the Skywalker Saga that Disney Legend George Lucas started in 1977.

So… no pressure.

Terrio, of course, said yes to the project he’d been dreaming about since childhood. With Abrams, he began plotting where to pick up from 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi and where to take the characters next. “This movie is very much about this generation—and whether this generation can accomplish things that the previous generation didn’t,” he says. “Having grown up with the original trilogy, I would ask, ‘Can’t we talk a little bit more about Threepio or Lando?’ My natural affinity is toward these characters who are like my family, who I’ve grown up with and have loved. But in this film, if there had to be an emphasis, it fell on all the new characters, who we still have so much to learn about.”

John Boyega still

In The Rise of Skywalker, the main trio—Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), and Poe (Oscar Isaac)—finally work as a single unit. “We get to see them together on this adventure,” Terrio explains. “They learn about each other as we are learn about them.”

The film also introduces new characters, including the freedom fighter Jannah (Naomi Ackie) and the droid D-O. “We worked very hard to make sure every character had an arc,” says producer Michelle Rejwan, a veteran from The Force Awakens. “It was very important to us, because we’re so invested and care so deeply about these characters.”

Daisy Ridley

So, when actors like Richard E. Grant and Keri Russell make their Star Wars debuts in The Rise of Skywalker, they do it in style. “Michelle and I both feel like the first 10 or 30 seconds you spend with a character is the moment when you bond with that character,” explains Terrio. “Think about the moment you first meet Lando, when he walks up to Han; the moment you realize he’s actually going to hug him, you fall in love with him.”

The Rise of Skywalker also marks the last time Disney Legend Carrie Fisher appears onscreen as General Leia Organa. Although the actress passed away in 2016 before filming began, Abrams—with the blessing of Fisher’s actress daughter, Billie Lourd, who plays Lieutenant Connix—was able to integrate unused footage from The Force Awakens into the movie. “Every time you look at a line, you know it’s amongst the last words that Carrie will ever say onscreen, so you want it to have meaning. And yet, you don’t want to lose the sense of Carrie’s wit and her funniness and her fun; you don’t want every line to be some grand pronouncement,” Terrio says. “You want to also keep a little of the improvisation and messiness that Carrie would deliberately bring to a role.”

The Rise of Skywalker still

For that reason and more, having Abrams return as the writer and director seems obvious in retrospect. Bookending the trilogy “just felt right,” Rejwan says. “There really is no one who could have done this other than JJ. It was a real homecoming to have him back.” It helped that the filmmakers have an “irrevocable chemistry and alchemy,” she says. “We did everything we could. We gave it everything we had. Because not only do we care about this movie so much—we care about each other.”

With the opening day just around the corner, both Rejwan and Terrio admit they are only now beginning to accept that this chapter of their careers is coming to an end. “It’s not a job,” Terrio says with a laugh. “You don’t text each other and call each other at 2:45 in the morning with an idea because it’s a job; you do it cause you love it so much.”

JJ Abrams and Oscar Isaac

“I really am so inspired by Star Wars and the endless possibilities. It’s the conversation around good and evil in the galaxy and within ourselves—that constant tension of the Force,” Rejwan tells D23. “Star Wars is this unbelievable blend of the intimate and the epic. Always. Because of that, it has to be very personal to the storytellers. This is a reflection, in a way, of all our souls because we love it so much and we put so much into it. It’s really Star Wars that inspires me, and I want to give it everything that it deserves.”

Explosions, Music, and Three Dozen Super Heroes—Making the Avengers: Endgame Final Battle Sound Epic!

By Jim Frye

Good sound can make all the difference.

There’s a moment during the climax of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame—a very big moment—when the forces of Thanos charge into battle against the Earth’s—and the galaxy’s!—Mightiest Heroes, igniting a storm of explosions, crashes, and voices that literally shakes the ground, not to mention the walls of the theater. It is, quite literally, one of the biggest scenes ever put to film, and it is the job of the sound department to make sure we hear and experience that moment perfectly.

captain america and the avengers

From the tiniest sparkle of magic sprinkling the ground to the grand musical salvo trumpeting the resilience of Captain America, the sounds we hear during that scene help to transport us into the middle of that battle; the middle of the movie. Dan Laurie, supervising sound editor for Avengers: Endgame, in addition to Avengers: Infinity War, Thor: Ragnarok, and many Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films that came before, says the most important part of his job is helping to tell the story. “The main thing for us is to not put too much sound in,” he says. “You have to remember we’re telling a story and the story is the most important thing. If that gets cluttered with sound, it’s so loud that you can lose track of it.”

In addition to multiple MCU films, Laurie has also worked on such movies as Zootopia, The Good Dinosaur, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, multiple Harry Potter films, and many, many more. “On big films like this you tend to have two supervisors—an effects supervisor and a dialogue supervisor. I’m the dialogue supervisor. Shannon Mills handles all the effects editing. The only complements I get are from my peers. If nobody says anything about the dialogue, I guess it’s a compliment,” he laughs. “Nobody said, ‘I couldn’t hear Thanos’ lines,’ So I’m guessing it sounded pretty good.”

iron man

One scene that was particularly challenging, though, involved no explosions or battles whatsoever. It’s when we see a solitary Tony Stark at the beginning of the film aboard a nearly desolate spaceship, drifting in space waiting for the end to come. “When Robert was talking very low and whispering at the beginning while he’s on the ship, it was a very quiet, intimate moment,” says Laurie. “They wanted to just hear him—and it is sometimes a struggle. I did some treatment to that, just to try to clean it up and lift the wave forms up a bit because he’s talking very quietly. It was a very quiet, intimate moment.”

thanos

The other challenging moment for Laurie, though, was anything but quiet: the grand-finale battle with Thanos—noisy, bombastic, and slam-packed with every sound and voice you can imagine. “We had 36 characters all with individual sounds—which is a lot!” exclaims Laurie. “That big battle had all these different characters fighting in it. All with their distinctive sound design moments. And they’re talking, as well, and the music’s playing, and there’s this massive battle going on in the background with people running backward and forward. Everything has to be shaped to not go too loud, or too soft. But the overriding mission is tell the story with sound design and not lose track of what’s going on.”

And that’s what makes all the difference.

7 Reasons You Can’t Miss the Final Episode of The Imagineering Story

By Max Lark

There’s an old Walt Disney Imagineering adage that goes like this: Question: “How many Imagineers does it take to change a light bulb?” The answer? “Why a light bulb?” That kind of beyond-the-limits thinking is vividly on display in “To Infinity and Beyond”—the final installment of the much-talked-about Disney+ docuseries The Imagineering Story. D23 recently had the chance to screen the episode, which streams on Disney+ beginning Friday, and after checking it out—alongside director Leslie Iwerks and an array of Imagineers who make appearances in the finale—and we found it to be the perfect conclusion to the revealing, candid, often-funny The Imagineering Story docuseries. Here are 7 reasons you can’t miss the final episode of this compelling docuseries.

1. Provides looks at some of the latest and greatest theme park lands and experiences in Disney Parks and Imagineering history. The episode travels around the globe to go behind the scenes of the making of Shanghai Disney Resort, Pandora – The World of Avatar, and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and more. Trust us: There’s tons of behind-the scenes footage you’ve never seen!

doris woodward

2. Offers candid looks at the daunting challenges Imagineers face on a daily basis. You think your job is hard? Watch the sequence about the design and construction of Shanghai Disney Resort—it’s one that left this viewer dripping with empathy for everyone involved in a project that presented so many seemingly insurmountable challenges. A sequence of Doris Woodward, an executive creative producer at WDI, trudging through a vast mud plain and pointing out where the Enchanted Story Castle would be built, provided undeniable proof that this was an undertaking of gargantuan—and downright frightening—proportions. But “To Infinity and Beyond” reveals that it was worth all the “blood, sweat, and fears.”

tron lightspeed run

3. Provides macro and micro views of Walt Disney Imagineering talents and capabilities. Interspliced with scenes of building TRON Lightcycle Power Run – Presented by Chevrolet, the Gardens of Imagination, and the Enchanted Story Castle are a series of charming vignettes proving that Imagineers sweat the small stuff about as well as anyone. Don’t miss sequences of Doris Woodward working with tile cutters, or artisans from China learning from Disney counterparts how to shape mud on building surfaces.

joe rohde creative director

4. Reveals Secrets behind the construction and architecture of the otherworldly realm of Pandora – The World of Avatar. In his inimitable fashion, Portfolio Creative Director Joe Rohde takes viewers on a unique tour behind the scenes of the making of this fantastical world, explaining how trompe l’oeil vines actually mask the architecture that creates the illusion of floating terrain. You also won’t want to miss an under-the-“skin” look at the Na’vi Shaman of Songs; 42 actuators in the head of this Audio-Animatronics® figure and revolutionary “skin” make this mesmerizing figure one of the most dazzling ever built.

guardians mission breakout

5. Shows how no matter the limitations, Imagineers exceed expectations. Rohde adds fascinating insight about Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!, explaining that the goal of the attraction was to replace a tone of terror with one of pure unabashed irreverence. In a panel held after the screening, Rohde explained that the attraction has “an elevator—that’s what it is.” But he added that they could change the tone of the attraction by varying the up-and-down elevator movement. He compared the new effect to when you throw a baby up in the air and catch him or her. “The baby giggles because it’s a great feeling.” Makes perfect sense to us!

star wars rise of the resistance

6. Delivers plenty of behind-the-scenes footage of the making of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. “To Infinity and Beyond” also travels to a galaxy far, far away with fascinating sequences showing the building of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge’s two signature attractions and the planet Batuu. Again, you haven’t seen these goodies before!

dumbo shanghai disneyland

7. Poignantly reveals that Walt Disney Imagineering is all about family. After viewing the Sturm und Drang—the storm and stress—of completing Shanghai Disney Resort, there are wonderful sequences showing families enjoying many of its attractions. Their faces are ones of unbridled joy. And Imagineers know their jobs are all about making families around the world happy. But what about the team at Imagineering? It turns out they’re a pretty strong family, as well. Walt Disney Imagineering President Bob Weis spoke at the event about how Imagineers are used to working on projects that they can’t talk to their families about—but they still have their Imagineering families to share their work dreams with. Joe Rohde revealed that if there is any problem in the course of a project, “Get it on a table and show it to the team. Maybe it isn’t even a problem.” In virtually every frame of “To Infinity and Beyond” and every episode of The Imagineering Story—that feeling that everything Imagineers do is for families—Disney guests and each other—is what helps make Walt Disney Imagineering so special. Creating happiness is hard work: But it’s the best job in the world.

Pay Attention, Padawan! These 7 Stories About Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Are Soon to Become Legend

By Zach Johnson

Surprises! Unlimited surprises!

The first of many unexpected (but welcome) delights at the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker global press conference came when director Ava DuVernay was announced as the moderator. With the crowd going wild in anticipation, DuVernay quickly invited writer/director JJ Abrams, writer Chris Terrio, producer Kathleen Kennedy, and actors Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Naomi Ackie (Jannah), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), John Boyega (Finn), Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Keri Russell (Zorii Bliss), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian), and Richard E. Grant (Allegiant General Pryde) to share stories about the ninth and final episode in the Skywalker Saga before it opens in theaters December 20.

The biggest surprise would come later, as Abrams was explaining how he integrated unused footage of late Disney Legend Carrie Fisher (General Leia Organa) into the film. “There was no way we were going to do a digital Leia, and there was no way we would ever recast her, but we couldn’t do it without her. When we went back to look at the scenes we hadn’t used in The Force Awakens, we realized we had an opportunity. We could use the footage, use the lines she was saying, literally use the lighting—” Before he could finish his sentence, the lights suddenly turned off. “That’s amazing,” a smiling Abrams marveled. “That is creepy. Hi, Carrie! That is so Carrie, by the way, to do that!”

Tran said her scenes with Fisher are some of her favorite in the entire film. “There is sort of this idea that J.J. has talked about of ending nine films. Carrie was such a big part of all of that,” she said. “I think for me, personally, there was a lot of wanting to honor this thing and do right by this thing. I think she’s pretty incredible in this movie.”

Suotamo felt similarly about honoring the late Peter Mayhew. “When Peter passed, I was heartbroken,” the actor said. “I tried to do him justice in this film. I’m really proud, with this incredible cast, that we’re a part of something so much bigger than ourselves.”

Tran, Suotamo, and their co-stars hadn’t seen the finished film until a day earlier—but Grant, who makes his villainous Star Wars debut in The Rise of Skywalker, wasted no time posting a glowing review online. “I didn’t tweet any spoilers about it at all,” the actor clarified. “Having seen the first one as a theater student when I was 20 years old, before any of the younger cast were even born, it was an extraordinarily emotional thing to see the passing of time that goes through all of these movies. It felt really like a combination of everything I read in the Bible, Greek mythology, and The Wizard of Oz all rolled into one—into this extraordinary summation of the whole story. It delivers an emotional wallop at the end that I was totally unprepared for; I was wiped out, and I barely slept!”

Before the film debuts, we’re sharing seven standout stories from the press conference:

1. As Rey Has Grown in Her Power, So Has Kylo Ren.
“Being called The Force Awakens was intentional in that it was the force awakening for both sides of the light and the dark,” Driver explained. Over the course of three films, Kylo Ren has become the person he’s always wanted to be. “JJ, even in those first meetings, talked about someone who is unformed and not quintessentially in control of his faculties. He knows where he fits in—which is helpful for me as an actor, because we were figuring out the same thing—and it totally echoes what’s going on in the story.”

 2. Poe Dameron Is No Longer Flying Solo.
“I remember JJ being excited about dirtying up the squeaky flyboy image and revealing a little bit more of his personality,” Isaac said. “And I’ve been taken away from my little box in space! I get to join my friends this time!” Teasing that Poe’s “relentless, almost aggressive optimism” will be tested, he said fans will see “how he tries to be there for his friends,” as well as how he “tries to push them along when it seems quite hopeless.”

3. C-3PO and Anthony Daniels Are One and the Same.
After playing one of only two characters to appear in all nine episodes of the Skywalker Saga, Daniels admitted he barely remembers a time before Star Wars was part of his life. “It’s rather like having your nose up against the planet: You can’t see how big that planet is. Now I’m beginning to a have a perspective on it, and that comes from talking to fans, to people who say what Star Wars has meant to them over the years,” he said. “It’s meant something completely different to me. It’s a job. It’s kind of fun. It’s kind of a ball.” Now, he added, “I’m getting to see it from the other perspective of the audience.”

4. Like The Mandalorian, Zorii Bliss Never Removes Her Helmet.
Russell was pleasantly surprised when Abrams reached out with an offer to join the cast. After collaborating for over 20 years, she was even more excited when he told her she’d be wearing a mask. “Keri loved the mask so much that the first two days she worked as Zorii, I never saw her face!” Abrams said. When she’s in character, Russell explained, “I can see everyone as this super tough version of myself in costume—and no one can see me. That’s my dream! It’s a real power play, in a way, because no one can really see what you’re thinking, but you can see everyone else.” Russell added that it was a thrill to work with Abrams again, and said she’s proud to see him finish what Disney Legend George Lucas started in 1977 with Star Wars: A New Hope. “I feel like we have a shorthand. We just speak the same language, in a way,” the actress said. “I feel like JJ got to finish a piece of history by getting to do this. He did such a great job.”

5. Jannah Is a Force to Be Reckoned With.
Resistance ally Jannah is a formidable warrior, so Ackie did pull-ups and took up horseback riding to look and feel the part. “With that came a confidence I hadn’t previously experienced,” the Star Wars newbie admitted. “I felt like Jannah’s strength was in her body.” To ensure Jannah was a multidimensional character, Ackie worked with Abrams to explore the freedom fighter’s softer side. “We don’t always have to be strong and fierce,” the actress said. “Sometimes vulnerability is strength at the same time. Finding that balance was really interesting, and I feel like we found it by the end.”

6. Lando Calrissian Is Back—and Better Than Ever.
Although Donald Glover played a younger version of the smooth-talking smuggler in 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, Williams hadn’t appeared onscreen as the character since 1983’s Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. “I didn’t think that it would happen,” he said. “I just wrote it off.” So, when he got the call from Abrams, he just laughed. “I thought it was just a wonderful gift,” he added, “so I’m a very, very happy human being right now.”

7. JJ Abrams Believes in the Power of the Force.
“The truth is that there’s the movie that you know you’re presenting to the world, and then there’s the thing that you’re doing not necessarily secretly, but meaningfully,” he said. “We live in a crazy world. We live in a crazy time. Star Wars, for me, was about hope, and it was about community and the underdog, and it was about bringing people together and seeing all oddballs represented and the most unlikely friends in the most unlikely places. And the family that you make is really your family.” Without spoiling the final film, Abrams added, “It really is about hope. It’s about coming back to a sense of possibility. It’s about unity. And if Star Wars can’t do that for us, I don’t know what can.”

ZOMBIES 2 Gets a Valentine’s Day Premiere on Disney Channel

By Beth Deitchman

There’s no better night for a love story than Valentine’s Day, and our friends at Disney Channel have us covered. Our favorite star-crossed zombie-cheerleader couple, Zed and Addison, return to the network in ZOMBIES 2, premiering February 14 at 8 p.m. EST/PST. The movie will also be available in DisneyNOW.

Meg Donnelly (American Housewife) and Milo Manheim (Dancing with the Stars) reprise their roles of Addison and Zed, respectively, which they first played in the top-rated 2018 Disney Channel Original Movie ZOMBIES. In the follow-up, the pair is getting ready for Seabrook High’s Prawn (it’s like a prom, but supersized). After the unanticipated arrival of a new pack of mysterious teenage werewolves, who have come to Seabrook in search of an ancient life force buried somewhere within the town, the fearful city council reenacts the town’s anti-monster laws. Suddenly, Addison and Zed’s Prawn-night plans to become the first-ever zombie-cheerleader couple to attend the big event together are out the window. While Zed launches a campaign to run for school president and change the rules, Addison finds herself drawn into the werewolves’ circle. Could this be where she finally fits in? Zed takes drastic action to keep from losing Addison to the werewolf pack, but his plan backfires. When the truth comes out, everyone—zombies, cheerleaders, and werewolves—discover the real meaning of community and acceptance.

See the first official clip from the upcoming DCOM—the 108th in the franchise—below:

Manheim and Donnelly are joined by Trevor Tordjman as Bucky, Kylee Russell as Eliza, Carla Jeffery as Bree, James Godfrey as Bonzo, and Kingston Foster as Zoey, all of whom reprise the roles they first played in ZOMBIES. Chandler Kinney, Pearce Joza, and Ariel Martin (Baby Ariel) join the cast as werewolves Willa, Wyatt, and Wynter, respectively.

Throughout ZOMBIES 2, we can look forward to so much singing and dancing—from the cheerleaders’ pop beats to the zombies’ hip-hop flow and the werewolves’ world beat style. Four of the movie’s nine original songs are written by Rock Mafia (the team behind “Queen of Mean” from Descendants 3); and the first song off the soundtrack, “We Got This” (co-written and produced by Mitch Allan, whose credits include Descendants 2) debuts January 3. On January 31, “The New Kid in Town,” performed by Baby Ariel, makes its debut. George S. Clinton (ZOMBIES) and Amit May Cohen (Wrestling Za’atari documentary) composed the score. The ZOMBIES 2 soundtrack is available on February 14, but fans can pre-order it beginning January 3.

David Light and Joseph Raso, who were nominated for a Humanitas Prize for ZOMBIES, have returned to write the sequel, and ZOMBIES director Paul Hoen is also at the helm for the next chapter. Anna Gerb (All Is Lost, Triple Frontier), Hoen, Light, and Raso are executive producers and Mary Pantelidis is producer.

Want to catch up on all of the antics in Zombietown and Seabrook? You can watch ZOMBIES now on Disney+. And stay tuned for more details about ZOMBIES 2 as its February 14 debut approaches.

Everything We Know About the Tokyo Disneyland Expansion Opening April 15, 2020

By Beth Deitchman

Next spring, guests will experience a host of new offerings coming to Tokyo Disneyland as part of the largest expansion of the park since it first opened. From a new area themed to Beauty and the Beast in Fantasyland and a most joyous ride with Baymax in Tomorrowland, to an incredibly fashionable spot to greet Minnie in Toontown, there’ll be so much to discover in the park. Last week, Oriental Land Co., Ltd. revealed new details about what we can expect to see and do, beginning April 15, 2020.

New Ways to Experience the Tale as Old as Time in Fantasyland
Guests will enter the new Beauty and the Beast-themed area at the entrance to Belle’s village; Maurice’s Cottage will mark guests’ arrival (and will be home to Disney FASTPASS machines). Gaston surely would be pleased to see a fountain dedicated to him standing at the village’s center. As guests stroll through Belle’s world, they’ll walk past La Taverne de Gaston restaurant and the Village Shoppes (of course, there’s a bookstore!) until they ultimately reach the forest where Beauty and the Beast Castle looms—and Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast awaits!

Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast is housed within the nearly-30-meter tall castle, and the attraction invites guests to board magical cups that “dance” in rhythm to the animated film’s iconic music. As they become immersed in the truly “enchanted tale,” guests will dance with the dishes and cutlery, glide over the ice alongside Belle and Beast, and encounter even more magical moments and surprises while they watch to see if Belle and Beast find love before the last petal falls from the enchanted rose.

Guests will want to bring an appetite worthy of Gaston when they arrive to the counter-service restaurant La Taverne de Gaston. The décor is inspired by the tavern in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, with a large portrait of Gaston hanging over the fireplace and trophies celebrating his many accomplishments also on display.

Next door, LeFou’s snack shop will offer smaller bites, including apple-caramel churros, a new flavor for Tokyo Disneyland.

In the Village Shoppes, guests will notice many nods to the animated film, including a rolling ladder in La Belle Librairie bookshop; the candlesticks and dishware that may be found decorating Little Town Traders; and the dresses and clothier’s tools that will be seen within Bonjour Gifts. And within those exquisite shops, approximately 100 different types of special merchandise will be available for purchase, featuring motifs from the film such as Belle dancing with Beast, as well as the enchanted rose.

A Spectacular New Show in a Fairytale-Inspired Venue
The design for Tokyo’s first indoor theater, Fantasyland Forest Theatre, was inspired by the forest. As guests prepare to experience the original Tokyo Disneyland show Mickey’s Magical Music World, they’ll be surrounded by beautiful tapestries and murals that celebrate the forest and the woodland creatures of classic Disney animation, and the theater will be lit by rustic chandeliers that give the appearance of candlelight.

Mickey’s Magical Music World takes Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy deep into the forest, where they come upon a giant music box with a large golden key. When Mickey and his friends turn the key, the doors to the music box open, revealing favorite Disney characters such as Snow White, Pinocchio, and Woody, along with favorite Disney songs. But when the last door opens and no music is heard, Mickey and the gang embark on a search for the missing song, along the way encountering characters from Disney films that include The Jungle Book, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and Peter Pan.

big hero 6 attraction

Big Fun Themed to Big Hero 6 in Tomorrowland
Tokyo Disneyland will debut the world’s first rotating ride attraction themed to the film Big Hero 6. The Happy Ride with Baymax has one goal: to make people happy. In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ beloved film, brilliant young inventor Hiro Hamada learned from Baymax—his robotic personal healthcare companion—that the first step to making people healthy is to make them happy. From the up-tempo music to the attraction’s wild and unexpected twists, we have no doubt that The Happy Ride with Baymax will do just that.

Pop in to Tomorrowland for a Delicious Snack
After a spin on The Happy Ride with Baymax, guests can give their happiness levels another boost at The Big Pop—a shop completely dedicated to popcorn. Located right next to The Happy Ride with Baymax, The Big Pop is themed to outer space, with a huge popcorn chandelier hanging from the starry ceiling, an homage to the “big bang” that created the universe. Popcorn will be available in a variety of buckets, and will be offered in three flavors: Cookie & Cream, Caramel & Cheese, and Strawberry Milk.

Meet Minnie in Style, Over in Toontown
Minnie’s Style Studio marks the first time that guests will be able to meet Minnie Mouse in her own greeting facility in the very studio where she designs, creates, and photographs her newest fashions. Magazine covers featuring Minnie will be on display in lobby, which leads to the office where Minnie draws her original designs. Guests will see the workroom where Minnie’s designs take shape and become outfits, before meeting the designer herself in the photo studio.

Fashionista that she is, Minnie will wear her latest design when she greets guests. She’ll change her look every season, and we’ve heard that her spring look will feature a hat and a dress with a floral design.

The big expansion will also bring special merch to the park, featuring two different design schemes. A look with the new facilities’ distinctive and dazzling logos will appear on T-shirts, caps, neck straps, and more; while a second design will feature Mickey showing his own excitement over the opening of these incredible new experiences. We totally understand where he’s coming from—and we know where we want to go next April!
