Take a Toad-ally Inside Look at the Brand-New Season of Amphibia

By Beth Deitchman

Amphibia’s unfrogettable first season introduced Disney fans to Anne Boonchuy, a spirited and independent teen who found herself magically transported to a fantastical world inhabited by frog people, including the Plantars—a family that would come to love Anne (voiced by Brenda Song) as one of their own. Anne’s adventures last season were a true “frog out of water” story, centered around her sometimes rocky adjustment to life in Wartwood and her growing bond with her new best friend, Sprig (voiced by Justin Felbinger); his polliwog sister, Polly (voiced by Amanda Leighton); and their curmudgeonly but lovable grandfather, Hopadiah Plantar, aka Hop Pop (voiced by Disney Legend Bill Farmer). Now, as we look ahead to Amphibia’s second season—which kicks off this Saturday, July 11 (8:20 p.m. EDT/PDT) on Disney Channel and DisneyNOW—the world of the show is expanding far beyond the mountains that surround Wartwood. The mystery of how Anne ended up in Amphibia is deepening as well, along with the question of how—or whether—she will ever find her way home.

amphibia

In Amphibia’s season two premiere, Anne and the Plantars leave the rural marshland of Wartwood for the distant metropolis of Newtopia. “We’re letting them loose on the entire continent, if you will,” says Amphibia creator and executive producer Matt Braly of the epic snail-powered road trip. “They’re going to be traveling around, meeting new characters, exploring new locations, and looking for a way to get Anne home. It’s quite distinctly different from the first season right off the bat.”

Of course, as the new season begins, we’ve realized that Anne isn’t the only human in Amphibia. The enchanted music box that brought her to this strange new world also worked its magic on her friends, Sasha and Marcy, who were zapped into Amphibia at the same time that she was. Anne was reunited with Sasha late in Amphibia’s first season, and we quickly discovered that their relationship is… complicated. Through flashbacks, we learned that Sasha is the trio’s forceful leader, with Anne a more submissive follower—a dynamic that was surprising, given the strong personality she exhibits when she’s among the frogs. “I think that was something that we were really trying to communicate, that feeling of you’re one way with this group of people and completely different with another group,” Braly says, noting that he wants the friendship between Anne, Sasha, and Marcy to feel like something that was very real before magic and mystery upended their lives. “There is a lot of story to follow with all three of the girls, and in this season we are touching on all of them.”

amphibia

The executive producer promises that this season will also reveal what Hop Pop might or might not know about Anne’s “calamity box,” as the magical music box was labeled in one of Plantar’s scholarly tomes. Braly remains tight-lipped as to why Hop Pop decided to secretly bury the music box, saying only, “It’s something that I can’t wait for audiences to experience. It all really does come to a head this season.”

Season two’s shenanigans will also include an homage to Disney Channel’s 2012–’16 fan-favorite animated series Gravity Falls. Braly, a storyboard artist on the earlier series, will only tease, “I probably shouldn’t say much, but I will just say that two very familiar faces will be showing up in the show in a way that no one will be expecting.”

amphibia

Amphibia viewers can also keep an ear out for a lineup of guest stars that includes Kermit the Frog; Jenifer Lewis and Keith David, both of The Princess and the Frog; George Takei (Star Trek); Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville and Michelle Dockery; the voice of Daisy Duck, Tress MacNeille; Marlow Barkley, Mia Allan, and Ella Allan of ABC’s Single Parents; Haley Tju of Big Hero 6 The Series; Susan Egan, the voice of Meg from Disney’s Hercules; and Flula Borg of Pitch Perfect 2.

There’s so much excitement to come, promises Braly, who shares that in the coming season fans can look forward to four special episodes that each have single 22-minute stories (unlike most episodes of Amphibia, which have two 11-minute stories each). Disney Channel also announced recently that Amphibia has been picked up for a third season—proof that Anne and the Plantars’ ribbeting adventures are only just beginning. “There are so many twists and turns. I am on the edge of my seat myself waiting to see what people think of this stuff,” Braly says. “We’ve been planning, and we’ve been sitting on this stuff for so long. We touch on it lightly in the first season but in the second season it really gets kicked into high gear. I can’t wait for you guys to see it.”

Pirates of the Caribbean Flying Dutchman models

By Rick Lorentz, Walt Disney Archives

These Flying Dutchman models help showcase the amount of time and detail that went into creating the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Each model is like a “work of art,” combining early artist renderings, concept art, production notes, and real historical ships into one finely detailed final product. The Flying Dutchman is based off the Dutch “Fluyt” ships and a Swedish warship named the “Vasa.” Throughout the production of the series, models like these were made from different materials and in various sizes ranging from quarter, half, and even full-scale shooting models.

Flying Dutchman Fun Facts:
The Flying Dutchman is based on an old legend dating back to the 18th century. It refers to a “ghost ship” doomed to sail the oceans forever, bringing bad luck to mariners. It was first sighted in the 17th century and as recently as 1942 by a German submarine crew.

Before becoming King of England, Prince George V reported seeing the Flying Dutchman in 1881 while aboard the H.M.S. Bacchante. Thirteen other crew members aboard also reported seeing it!

By Courtney Potter

New Soul Sneak Peek Debuts During Essence Festival of Culture

“What is it that makes you, you?” During last weekend’s first installment of the amazing virtual 2020 Essence Festival of Culture, the folks behind Disney and Pixar’s Soul presented an exclusive sneak peek at the upcoming film! Director Pete Docter, co-director and screenwriter Kemp Powers, and producer Dana Murray joined American anthropologist/educator Dr. Johnnetta Cole and globally renowned jazz pianist Jon Batiste for a virtual panel titled “Finding Soul”; both Dr. Cole and Batiste—who lent his expertise to the jazz music featured in Soul—serve as cultural consultants on the film. Check out the heartwarming clip, which features the song “Parting Ways” (written, produced, and performed by Cody ChesnuTT), above…

Pixar Animation Studios’ all-new feature film Soul introduces Joe Gardner (voice of Jamie Foxx)—a middle-school band teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town. But one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before—a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks, and interests before they go to Earth. Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with a precocious soul, 22 (voice of Tina Fey), who has never understood the appeal of the human experience. As Joe desperately tries to show 22 what’s great about living, he may just discover the answers to some of life’s most important questions. Look for Soul in U.S. theaters beginning November 20.

And don’t forget: Essence Festival of Culture continues this weekend and will feature cast members from Hulu’s Bad Hair and Hamilton, launching this week on Disney+!

As the story unfolds, Raven (Raven-Symoné), Chelsea (Anneliese van der Pol), and their collective kidlets set out on a long road trip to Maine’s Camp Champion—but a GPS malfunction sends them off course to Camp Kikiwaka, a place with an uncertain future even for those who can catch a glimpse of said future. While Raven and Chelsea hunt for Maine lobster, the kids make arts and crafts and develop feats of engineering… and then set out to find the camp’s infamous “Snipe” in Moose Rump’s Forbidden Forest. The Musical Theater Fan’s Guide to Disney+

By the D23 Team

“Curtain up! Light the lights!” Longtime readers of D23 may have caught on that we’re big fans of musical theater ’round these parts. (Especially the incredible shows created by our pals over at Disney Theatrical Group.) With Disney+ now delighting viewers around the world—and with the Broadway mega-hit Hamilton premiering on Friday, July 3—we thought it was high time to take a deep dive and find all the best musical theater-related content on the streaming service. And the great news? There’s a lot of it…

Herewith, a list of some of the most entertaining musical fun this side of Times Square. Thankfully, you don’t have to leave the comfy confines of your couch in order to enjoy. But we do suggest silencing your cell phones and unwrapping those hard candies before we begin, so as to not disturb your fellow patrons… And now, on with the show!

newsies

Disney’s Newsies: The Broadway Musical (2017)
Disney Theatrical brought its high-energy musical Newsies—based on the 1992 film of the same name—first to movie screens around the country (via Fathom Events) in early 2017, and now to Disney+! Filmed live on stage at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre, it features several members of the original Broadway cast—including Jeremy Jordan (Tangled: The Series, The CW’s Supergirl), reprising his Tony®-nominated role as newsboy leader Jack Kelly.

encore

Encore!
One of the first series to premiere on Disney+, Encore! (executive produced by Frozen’s Princess Anna herself, Kristen Bell) reunites former castmates of a high school musical, tasking them with recreating their original performance. Each episode follows these unlikely groups of friends, who—with the help of Broadway’s best—might just pull off another applause-worthy performance. Perfect viewing for the all “theater kids,” both young and young-at-heart.

hello dolly

Hello, Dolly! (1969)
Barbra Streisand stars in this spirited film version of Jerry Herman’s Tony-winning musical, based on the Thornton Wilder play The Matchmaker. In 1890 New York, widowed matchmaker Dolly Levi (Streisand) is charged with finding a wife for grumpy “half-a-millionaire” Horace Vandergelder (Walter Matthau); hijinks and romance, as they usually do, ensue. Directed by Gene Kelly, the film also features an early screen appearance by future Phantom of the Opera star Michael Crawford.

annie

Annie (1999)
First airing as an installment of ABC’s The Wonderful World of Disney, this version of the long-running musical written by Thomas Meehan, with music and lyrics by Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin, stars Alicia Morton as the titular orphan, whose new life with big-hearted billionaire Daddy Warbucks (Victor Garber) and his charming assistant Grace Ferrell (Audra McDonald) is almost thwarted by mean orphanage matron Miss Hannigan (Kathy Bates). Also featuring Broadway vets Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth.

the sound of music

The Sound of Music (1965)
This ’65 film of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s seminal musical—based on a true story—received five Oscars®, including Best Picture. Julie Andrews stars as Maria, a postulant in late ’30s Austria who is sent to the home of widower Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer) to be governess to his seven precocious children. Eventually, Maria and Von Trapp fall in love and marry before being forced to flee with their family across the Alps towards freedom.

high school musical

High School Musical (2006)
It’s true—this particular entrant began as a Disney Channel Original Movie, not as a stage production… but we couldn’t not include it, for obvious reasons! Directed by Disney Legend Kenny Ortega, High School Musical follows basketball star Troy (Zac Efron) and shy newcomer Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens) as they sign up to star in East High’s upcoming musical—threating the school’s rigid social order. The couple ultimately inspires their friends to take a chance and fulfill their dreams.

once upon a mattress

Once Upon a Mattress (2005)
Another entry from ABC’s The Wonderful World of Disney is this 2005 version of Broadway’s Once Upon a Mattress—itself a tuneful adaptation of the 1835 Hans Christian Andersen tale The Princess and the Pea. Tracey Ullman stars as Winnifred, a brash princess from the wetlands who hopes to prove herself worthy of marrying sad but sweet Prince Dauntless (Denis O’Hare). Carol Burnett, who originated the role of Winnifred on Broadway in 1959, costars as the conniving Queen Aggravain.

hamilton

Hamilton (2020)
The latest in Disney+’s theatrically minded offerings, Hamilton was filmed live on stage at New York’s Richard Rodgers Theatre in 2016. Written by and starring multi-hyphenate Lin-Manuel Miranda, the show is based on the writings of “founding father” Alexander Hamilton—setting the early days of the United States of America to a modern score combining hip-hop, jazz, R&B, and Broadway. Look for it on Disney+ beginning July 3!

Hamilton Comes to Disney+ This Weekend—Here’s Everything You Need to Know

By Beth Deitchman

“This is the best-rehearsed movie in the history of movies, as each performer has performed their role hundreds of times. No one has had this seat in the house… it is better than the best seat in the house,” says Lin-Manuel Miranda of the filmed version of Hamilton launching this Friday, July 3, on Disney+.

Unlike any musical that came before it, Hamilton captivated audiences and critics right from the start, becoming an 11-time Tony Award®, Grammy Award®, Olivier Award, and Pulitzer Prize winner in the months following its 2015 opening. Miranda wrote the book, music and lyrics, blending hip-hop, jazz, R&B and Broadway to create a show that was so unique that it became a revolutionary moment in theater—a true cultural phenomenon. He also played the title role from Hamilton’s earliest days until July 9, 2016, and the film audiences will see this week was captured just a few weeks before Miranda’s departure from the production.

hamilton

“There was something in the air and the cast knew it was coming to an end, so there was a kind of intensity and emotionality that were present in these performances that weren’t necessarily the same as it was when we first started doing the show,” Thomas Kail shares. Kail directed the Broadway production and also helms the filmed version, which transports the audience into the world of the Broadway show in a uniquely intimate way. Watch the special look, below, to get a sense of how the film is bringing fans right into the room where it happens.

Hamilton was filmed in June 2016, and it will give fans a sense of what it was like to experience the show from the audience, as well as on stage. “The shows that we did with an audience we did non-stop. The cameras were positioned in the house or on the stage and we just ran the shows as we always did,” Kail explains. He describes finding the movie during the editing process, striking a delicate balance between the ensemble’s choreography and intimate close-ups of the actors.

The film features the entire original cast: In addition to Miranda, Daveed Diggs stars as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson; Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler; Jonathan Groff as King George; Christopher Jackson as George Washington; Jasmine Cephas Jones as Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds; Leslie Odom, Jr. as Aaron Burr; Okieriete Onaodowan as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison; Anthony Ramos as John Laurens/Philip Hamilton; and Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton. Rounding out the ensemble are Carleigh Bettiol, Ariana DeBose, Hope Easterbrook, Sydney James Harcourt, Sasha Hutchings, Thayne Jasperson, Elizabeth Judd, Jon Rua, Austin Smith, Seth Stewart, and Ephraim Sykes.

Multiple cameras were used to film the actors on stage during performances of  the production—including an overhead camera and a camera that was carefully hidden in a brick wall at the rear of the stage. On the day when the production filmed without an audience present, a Steadicam, crane and dolly were used to film 13 or 14 numbers (of the 46 that are included in the show).

There was no worry about edits needing to be made for story or time—so those new to Hamilton will experience the musical in its entirety. At the same time, because the movie was filmed on stage, there will be subtle variations in the film that will be new for fans who have had the original cast recording on continuous loop since their first listen. “It’s basically what it would have been like had you been watching Hamilton at the Richard Rodgers Theatre that weekend in June with a live audience,” details Alex Lacamoire, who oversaw music supervision and orchestrations for the film and the stage production. “There are a couple of moments that happen in the live performance that weren’t recorded on the cast album, and you’ll be able to see those moments in the film.”

Since its premiere, Hamilton has had a profound impact on culture, politics and education, and Miranda notes, “I think the show is different depending on where you are and when you see it. This is a show that premiered during the Obama administration, which is a very different White House than the one we have now. The words haven’t changed but the world has changed.”

Hamilton was fast-tracked to arrive on Disney+ during a time in which our country is facing much adversity and a time when theaters across the globe have done dark due to the global pandemic. “I’m incredibly grateful that the world will be able to see this,” Miranda says. “Theater is a communal artistic experience, and this film is a love letter to live theater.”
