We can’t wait to see what everyone wears as these iconic Disney songs are brought to life on ABC—and if last year’s “Disney Night” is any indication, it’s sure to be a magical “Disney Week!” You can help spread the magic, as host and executive producer Tyra Banks on Monday introduced a VIP—Mickey Mouse—“to show us some moves that each of the couples will have to include in their routines, no matter which dance style they perform.” After you learn the routine, post it on social media using #DWTSMickeyDanceChallenge!

Want to see your favorite couple advance in the competition? Voting is available via abc.com and SMS/text. The live votes will occur each episode, but only during the live broadcast in ET/CT time zones; fans in all U.S. time zones may vote within that window.

You should watch: The Cat From Outer Space

the cat from outer space

Since your taste in sci-fi films is less about scary, try something su-purr-natural instead. This quirky live-action Disney classic has it all: a boy, a girl, and… a talking alien cat? The Cat from Outer Space is more of an offbeat comedy than a fright fest, following the adventures of “Jake” the cat when his spaceship crash lands on Earth. The humans who help Jake soon discover there are nefarious forces out to cat-nap the intergalactic feline. Spies and criminals won’t stop the humans from helping their new friend—after all, with an alien that’s so dang cute, you’d want to help him out, too!
You should watch: Lilo & Stitch

lilo & stitch

Want a sci-fi film that’s less about intergalactic travel and more about the friends we make along the way? Lilo & Stitch is a beloved Disney animated film about Stitch, an escaped alien convict programmed to destroy—until he meets an outcast young girl, Lilo, who sees the best in him. This blossoming friendship is threatened by the wacky (and sometimes scary) aliens trying to capture Stitch and return him to intergalactic prison.
You should watch: Avatar

When you think “sci-fi,” you’re thinking about visiting another planet—not just visiting, but immersing yourself in the nature, the culture, the wildlife… If you could become an alien yourself, you’d do it! While we can’t travel to other planets (…yet), the next closest thing is watching Avatar, the groundbreaking epic film about Jake, a former Marine who operates the body of an “avatar,” a hybrid of humans and the local species, the Na’vi. In his avatar, Jake becomes acquainted with the Na’vi and their culture and realizes that humanity’s attempt to colonize the planet is a terrible mistake. The film is iconic for its innovative use of motion capture and visual effects to create the Na’vi and their immersive home planet of Pandora.
You should watch: The Black Hole

the black hole

Just because you’re in space doesn’t mean you can’t be a little freaked out—that’s your philosophy for picking a sci-fi film, anyway. If you don’t want to graduate to full on thrills and chills, but wouldn’t mind a little bit of fear mixed in with your robots and lasers, it’s time for you to watch The Black Hole. The film follows the crew of humans and robots traveling in spacecraft U.S.S. Palomino, who stumble across a—you guessed it!—black hole with the abandoned U.S.S. Cygnus drifting in its wake. The crew of the Palomino investigate—but what they find inside is not what it seems…
You should watch: Flight of the Navigator

flight of the navigator

For you, sci-fi is all about adventure: meeting strange aliens, discovering new planets, flying in unimaginable spacecraft. Buckle up for your next adventure, the live-action hidden gem Flight of the Navigator. Twelve-year-old-David Freeman falls and is knocked unconscious—when he awakens, eight years have passed, but David has not aged at all. At the hospital David discovers he has a link to a mysterious spaceship that crash landed on Earth… And so begins his journey to becoming “The Navigator,” the key to helping the crash-landed aliens return home.

Souvenir Lunchbox
A fan-favorite souvenir from early in the resort’s history, the 1973 Walt Disney World lunchbox was a natural inspiration for the centerpiece of our collector set. The original lunchbox features Mickey, Donald, and Goofy on the front, with vignettes from around Magic Kingdom park on the sides. Our updated version for the 50th anniversary, designed by Kevin Kidney and Jody Daily, features Mickey, Donald, Chip, and Dale (carrying a Pluto hat as a nod to the original lunchbox); 48 years after the original lunchbox debuted, the resort now has four fabulous parks, and icons from all four them appear in the background. The vignettes on the sides of the lunchbox feature updated scenes from Typhoon Lagoon, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, and more!

Got an appetite for even more information on how the new lunchbox was designed? Check out this interview with designers Kevin Kidney and Jody Daily here.

Walt Disney World News
Extra, extra! Fifty years after “The Vacation Kingdom of the World” first opened, Walt Disney World is still making headlines. The Collector Set features a 2021 tribute to an original publication, the Walt Disney World News, which was released in 1971. In the excitement leading up to the opening of Walt Disney World, the original Walt Disney World News featured stories on the first family to enter the park; guides to dining and shopping; and more information teasing at what was in store for all the fans eagerly awaiting opening day. The 2021 edition of the Walt Disney World News features a welcome letter from head of D23 Michael Vargo, a retrospective on the origins of Walt Disney’s “Florida Project,” and a tribute to “50 Favorite Things” found at Walt Disney World—written by the staff of D23 and the Walt Disney Archives to inspire adventures of your own.

Vinyl Record
The music of Walt Disney World Resort has appeared on vinyl many times, including The Official Album of Walt Disney World pictured above. Our mini-version of this souvenir, made in partnership with Walt Disney Records, features the 1971 classic “Bear Band Serenade” from Country Bear Jamboree on one side, and the modern classic “Nothing Can Stop Us Now” from Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway on the other. While the toe-tapping tunes of Country Bear Jamboree have their own vinyl record (pictured above, right) “Nothing Can Stop Us Now” makes its vinyl debut on this retro-inspired disk.

Pennant
While pennants typically commemorate favorite sports teams, nothing makes us cheer like a fun-filled trip to Walt Disney World Resort! Inspired by this classic souvenir, the 2021 D23 Gold Member collector set features a pennant commemorating a different “team,” so to speak: The Official Disney Fan Club! The full-sized D23 pennant was designed by artist and the Official Voice of Mickey Mouse, Bret Iwan, and features a nod to classic pennants with the iconic Cinderella castle sparkling in the distance.

If you haven’t already joined D23 and want this exclusive set inspired by iconic Walt Disney World history, you can join D23 here. The 2021 D23 Gold Member Collector set is included as part of your D23 Gold Membership. Already a member, but have a history buff in your life who’d love a Collector Set of their own? 20th Century Fox “Spooktacular” – 1960s: Planet of the Apes

By Christina Pappous, Walt Disney Archives

Fall is officially upon us and Halloween is creeping just around the corner! To celebrate, our 20th Century Fox “Spooktacular” continues on to our next stop: that most swingin’ of decades—the 1960s. We’re not “monkeying” around when we say our next film explores what could await humanity in a not quite so distant future… Join us as we take a journey to the Planet of the Apes (1968)!

The world of Planet of the Apes is one strikingly similar to Earth, as astronaut George Taylor (Charlton Heston) and his crew discover upon crash-landing their spaceship. However, they quickly find out a startling, disturbing difference: apes are the ruling class of this seemingly strange planet while humans are wild, mute, and treated like animals.

Planet of the Apes
Astronaut George Taylor (Charlton Heston) and his crewmates, Landon (Robert Gunner) and Dodge (Jeff Burton).

In a sudden attack by gorilla soldiers, Taylor is wounded and captured, losing his crewmates in the flurry of violence. Brought to Apetown, Taylor comes under the observation of Zira (Kim Hunter), a kind chimpanzee scientist and her fiancé, the archaeologist Cornelius (Roddy McDowall).

Planet of the Apes
Zira (Kim Hunter) and Cornelius (Roddy McDowall) are angered by Taylor’s mistreatment at the hands of the gorilla soldiers.

Although Taylor persuades them of his intelligence and humanity, the pompous Dr. Zaius (Maurice Evans) thinks otherwise and disparages any possibility of an advanced human society. Zaius proves himself to be a formidable foe, tracking down Taylor, Zira, Cornelius, and their allies when they flee to the “Forbidden Zone.”

Planet of the Apes
Maurice Evans as the devious Dr. Zaius.

The four of them clash among artifacts of advanced human civilization, like eyeglasses and talking dolls; Zaius admits that he knew all along of its existence and before Taylor sets off to find answers as to why ape society eclipsed that of man, he warns him that “you may not like what you find.” And what does Taylor find among the crashing waves but a half-sunken Statue of Liberty…and with it, the irrevocable proof that humanity brought about its own end on Earth. Sinking to his knees, he screams, “We finally really did it. You maniacs! You blew it up!”

Planet of the Apes
Taylor and Nova (Linda Harrison) are about to find the answer to the astronaut’s question.

The making of Planet of the Apes posed some unique challenges for its cast and crew; namely, how could its human actors be convincingly transformed into sophisticated chimpanzees, orangutans, and gorillas? John Chambers and Dan Striepeke, the two men responsible for answering this question, began by observing said primates at the zoo, carefully studying facial features and making note of the subtlest changes in expression. As the makeup artists tested out different designs, Chambers agreed with director Franklin Schaffner that “the apes should not be made to look like hair-faced human beings […] in other words, we carried the evolutionary process only very slightly beyond what you might call ‘basic ape.’”

However, it was crucial that the actors’ expressions were still able to come through the prosthetics, and after much trial and error, the final facial designs for the ape characters were broken down into separate pieces for the nose, brow, mouth and chin. Kim Hunter, Roddy McDowall, and the other ape actors discovered that they had to exaggerate their reactions, essentially “overacting” beneath their prosthetics in order for their performances to really register on camera.

Planet of the Apes
Kim Hunter in full makeup, preparing for filming.

Costume design proved to be a challenge for designer Morton Haack as well, moving from initial designs for contemporary business suits for the apes to costumes that were more uniform and streamlined, befitting the advanced ape society. Haack used color to distinguish between the different simians: green for the chimps, brown for the orangutans, and purple for the gorillas. Amongst the many wonderful historical costumes in our collections at the Walt Disney Archives is a costume worn by one of the gorilla soldiers in the film.

Despite these unique design challenges, Planet of the Apes would prove to be a massive success with audiences and critics alike, resonating across generations through a unique visual approach to the source material. Followed by numerous sequels, a television series, and copious amounts of merchandise, the film remains a stalwart of the science fiction genre.

See for yourself a planet where apes evolved past humans, and venture, if you dare, to the Planet of the Apes!

Big City Greens Returns with Another Halloween Special—and So Much More!

By Zach Johnson

Halloween wouldn’t be the same without Big City Greens!

The animated series’ first Halloween special, which aired during its first season in 2018, will soon be followed by “Squashed!”, premiering Saturday, October 9, at 8:30 a.m. ET/PT on Disney Channel and DisneyNOW. The all-new 22-minute special follows the Greens as they prepare for their Halloween party. Tilly (voiced by Marieve Herington) feels bad for Bill (voiced by Bob Joles), who’s disappointed by the poor yield of his small pumpkin patch. When they visit BigTech to make a produce delivery, Tilly secretly “borrows” an alien chemical compound from Gwendolyn Zapp (voiced by guest star Cheri Oteri) to make Bill’s pumpkins grow bigger. Initially, it works… but then it mutates them into body-snatching alien monsters! Before the premiere of “Squashed!” we chatted with brothers Chris and Shane Houghton, creators and executive producers of Big City Greens, to find out more about what’s in store.

Big City Greens’ first Halloween special, “Blood Moon,” was “so much fun” to make, said Shane. “It was a fun deviation from what you would normally find in the series. It expanded the world a little bit, and we got to do things that maybe we wouldn’t do in a normal episode. Plus, it’s always fun to see everybody in costumes! So, when we got the chance to do another Halloween episode, we all jumped at it.” In fact, Chris said, “We made sure we produced it as the first episode of season three, because we wanted to pour everything into it; it’s a lot easier to do that at the beginning of a pickup than in the middle. I think ‘Squashed!’ is very representative of what the crew is capable of right now, because all of them stepped up and poured themselves into it, and it shows. The episode looks amazing!”

According to Chris, special attention was paid to ensure they didn’t “retrace our footsteps” in the season premiere. “We realized the first Halloween special, ‘Blood Moon,’ was all about Cricket and his dad—their relationship—and how Halloween trick or treating has changed for them,” he said. “We started to look at Tilly and asked, ‘Well, is there a Tilly Halloween story?’ Funny enough, it still centers around her relationship with her dad. We realized Tilly can dress up like her dad, like she’s trying to become her dad; he’s her hero. This special explores what happens when she inadvertently disappoints her hero.” Shane then shared a possibly “controversial” opinion, saying, “The conflict between Tilly and Bill is something that—in my opinion—is more dramatic than the alien monsters showing up.”

big city greens

There are plenty of nods to classic horror films in “Squashed!”, and there are many other Easter eggs to be found. “We have our very own parody song that plays during the party sequence,” said Shane. “The shorts department at Disney is making a music video based on this very goofy parody song, which turned out great.” Titled “Monster Man,” Big City Greens’ parody song already debuted as part of the Broken Karaoke short-form series on Thursday, September 30—and it will be available to stream starting on Friday, October 8.

Although the third season of Big City Greens is still in production, that doesn’t mean fans of the hit animated series will have to go without new content throughout the month. On Friday, October 15, at 7 p.m. ET/PT, three teams of two young pastry chefs will bring Big City Greens to life on Disney’s Magic Bake-Off, designing cityscape cakes complete with fondant streets, sugar paper maps, and their favorite characters, all topped with fresh fruit or vegetables from the Green family farm. Chris and Shane serve as guest judges, working with Chef Gracie to judge the two video challenges and the final cakes on taste, creativity, and presentation. “We had such a blast coming in and working on Disney’s Magic Bake-Off,” said Shane, who took up pie-making during the pandemic. “I was thrilled and honored to be asked to just be a guest judge with Chris. Gracie is a Disneyland pastry chef and an expert; she knows everything. Chris and I just got to come in, bumble our way through some stuff, and provide some colorful commentary. We had a fun time. It was awesome.”

big city greens

The Big City Greens fun continues on Saturday, October 23, at 8 p.m. ET when Cricket and Tilly host Disney Channel’s first-ever “Shortstober” in their festive Halloween costumes while trying to summon a ghost before they go trick-or-treating. The half-hour special features previously aired shorts from Big City Greens, along with Amphibia, Descendants, The Ghost and Molly McGee, Halloweentown, The Owl House, and ZOMBIES. “Last year we did ‘Shortsgiving’ for Thanksgiving, and this is kind of a sister sequel to this hosting format that the Greens have taken over, which is really exciting,” said Chris. “In the ‘Shortstober’ special, the Greens are out in the backyard. They’re all manning a rickety projector and a stage, and they are showing off a variety of different Disney TVA shorts. It’s a real honor for the Greens to be able to serve as hosts for Disney Channel. It’s got this homemade backyard feel; it feels right for the Greens, for the hosting format, and for the shorts.” According to Chris, Cricket and Tilly are made for this. “They are Disney Channel’s biggest fans,” he said. “They know everything and everybody. It’s a really fun opportunity for them.”

As for what’s in store for Big City Greens’ third season, the Houghtons didn’t want to say too much. “There are going to be some big changes for the Greens coming up,” Shane said, not wanting to spoil anything. “Season two ended with Gloria [voiced by Anna Akana] finally opening her very own café in partnership with Gramma Alice [voiced by Artemis Pebdani]. We’ll explore some of that relationship and see how they work together as partners running a café. And the Greens will continue to have some fun adventures in the big city.”

Raven's Home

Disney Channel’s Raven’s Home Will Return for a Fifth Season

Fun news from the good folks over at Disney Channel: The network just ordered a fifth season of its hit sitcom Raven’s Home, starring Raven-Symoné as Raven Baxter and Issac Ryan Brown (co-host of Disney’s Magic Bake-Off) as her teen son, Booker.

Making kids age 6-14 and their families laugh for several years now, Raven’s Home will continue to follow the hilarious hijinks driven by somewhat psychic Raven Baxter and her son Booker, who has inherited his mom’s gift to catch glimpses of the future. A spinoff of the iconic Disney Channel comedy That’s So Raven, season five welcomes Rondell Sheridan to the cast, who reprises his role from the beloved classic as Raven’s easygoing and loveable dad, Victor Baxter. Also joining the cast are Mykal-Michelle Harris (ABC’s mixed-ish) as Raven’s young cousin Alice; Felix Avitia (Disney’s Gamers Guide to Pretty Much Everything) as Neil, Victor’s neighbor and Booker’s high school classmate; and musician and singer Emmy Liu-Wang (Broadway’s Annie) as Ivy, a young neighbor who babysits Alice.

The new season will also mark a reunion for the creative team as Emmy®-nominated writer/producer partners Scott Thomas and Jed Elinoff (Malibu Rescue, Disney’s Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja), who developed the series, join Raven-Symoné as executive producers, along with Anthony C. Hill (Family Reunion). Production on the show resumes this fall—so stay tuned… and in the meantime, catch Raven’s Home on Disney Channel, DisneyNOW, and Disney+, and stream all four seasons of That’s So Raven on Disney+ as well!

Painting A Portrait of Walt Disney World: Inside the Stunning New Book That Celebrates 50 Years of The Most Magical Place on Earth

By Zach Johnson

Today, Walt Disney World Resort kicks off “The World’s Most Magical Celebration,” an 18-month event to commemorate its 50th anniversary with new attractions, nighttime spectaculars, and more. Across its theme parks and resorts, there are countless ways to mark this milestone—and thanks to Disney Editions, you can also immerse yourself in its rich history from home. The new coffee table book A Portrait of Walt Disney World: 50 Years of The Most Magical Place on Earth, authored by Kevin M. Kern, Tim O’Day, and Steven Vagnini, paints a robust and magical portrait of Walt Disney World Resort through vibrant voices along with rare Disney theme park concept art, ephemera, and photographs.

Because we can never get enough Disney trivia, we wanted to go behind the scenes of this behind-the-scenes book. Below, Kern, O’Day and Vagnini recount how their book went from a dream to a reality—and share some of the exciting things discovered along the way.

A Portrait of Walt Disney World: 50 Years of The Most Magical Place on Earth

D23: Where did the idea for this book come from?
Steven Vagnini (SV): I think the idea arose pretty naturally. In 2013, Kevin and I were colleagues in the Walt Disney Archives, which, as you might imagine, is involved in nearly all notable Disney anniversary celebrations. Thinking a bit ahead (and probably inspired by the hundreds of books around us!), we approached each other, suggesting that anyone who would want to work on a book for something as monumental as the Walt Disney World 50th anniversary would need to start… yesterday! That was eight years ago, and, of course, we wish we had even more time. Meanwhile, Tim and I had recently finished collaborating on D23 events for the resort’s 40th anniversary, as well as for the EPCOT 30th anniversary, which further sparked our interest in the project. The three of us made the pitch to our esteemed colleagues at Disney Editions—and got to work right away!

Kevin M. Kern (KMK): As Steven hints at, I think each of us holds a pretty high regard for the Walt Disney World publications of the past, and those were our constant creative compasses in many ways. After a few initial conversations, thoughts of “What if we pitched this idea?” quickly morphed into a roadmap for creating the book before us. Once we all connected with editors Wendy Lefkon, Jennifer Eastwood, and Monica Vasquez at Disney Editions, and after early encouragement from our colleagues in the Walt Disney Archives and at D23, we were off and running. Keeping the concept under wraps for so long was one of the hardest parts!

Tim O’Day (TO): I’ve always been fascinated by the affinity people have for various aspects of the Walt Disney World Resort experience. Having helped produce or co-produce elements of such events as the Official Disneyana Convention, various Walt Disney Art Classics celebrations, Disney Vacation Club events, and, of course, D23 Destination D gatherings, it was always thrilling and delightful to see the enthusiasm and passion people have for Walt Disney World. So, my interest in creating a book that celebrates that affection was at the forefront of my thoughts when teaming up with Kevin and Steven in planning and pitching the book.

D23: When did you start working on the book?
TO: If you ask any of our wives, they may answer that it feels like it’s been forever! [Laughs] However, in actuality, we were talking a great deal about how to approach the book from 2017 through most of 2019. There was just so much to tackle. The resort is very much like a living entity that grows and contracts, changes, morphs, adds, and subtracts, etc. Attempting to keep up with all the exciting changes while trying to ascertain the right tone and format took many, many, long phone calls and video chats. You cannot write a book like this for just one audience; it needs to satisfy the novice fan, the ardent enthusiast, the armchair historian, plus the countless cast members and Imagineers of yesterday and today. Once other projects cleared the runway, we were given a “go” for take-off in autumn of 2019. It was then everything kicked in at warp speed, with many sleepless nights and too many emails, texts, and phone calls to count. However, it all proved to be a delightful flight down the rabbit hole of Walt Disney World history, stories, personalities, beautiful artwork, and incredible photos.

A Portrait of Walt Disney World: 50 Years of The Most Magical Place on Earth

D23: What new insights or surprises did you discover through your research?
SV: The story of Walt Disney World is ever evolving and has been told in many various forms over the past five decades. That said, in presenting this unique “portrait” of the resort, we hope to captivate readers who might be less familiar with this remarkable story while also delighting the most knowledgeable fans with fresh insights and discoveries—and some fun surprises—about a place they deeply cherish.

Technically, you could say our research began more than a decade before the project officially launched! Poring through hundreds of files, memos, and other records preserved in the Walt Disney Archives that dated to the resort’s early development revealed a pivotal era in Disney history—from the time the state of Florida first caught the eye of Walt Disney in the 1950s, in fact—to the eventual design, development, and opening of the property without Walt.

Through this research—and in interviewing dozens of Disney Legends and company personnel—we are thrilled to paint a robust portrait of the resort, the profound inspirations and guiding philosophies behind its continual design and its impact on the world at large.

Along the way, we uncovered answers to curiosities that we, as historians, had long held. For example, we had seen only a handful of photographs of Walt on the property, but were there others? What, exactly, did Walt experience on his first visit to the site, and what did he think of it all? We are pleased to finally answer these questions in this coffee table book.

Further digging in the Walt Disney Archives revealed some of the first known concepts for the yet-to-be-named Magic Kingdom, noted by young Imagineer [and Disney Legend] Marty Sklar just weeks after Walt’s passing, as well as some of the earliest proposed names for the resort, years before it was called “Walt Disney World.” You’ll find these informational nuggets sprinkled all throughout the book, whether in the main narrative, photo captions, or the 10 pages of endnotes!

A Portrait of Walt Disney World: 50 Years of The Most Magical Place on Earth

D23: How is the book structured or laid out?
KMK: When the three of us sat down to chat about how to structure the content, an apt metaphor presented itself—that of a “thematic compass.” By focusing in on the resort through various conceptual lenses we were able to tie concept art, photography, and ephemera from across the five decades together in ways that hopefully will surprise and delight readers.

D23: This book includes some rare and never-before-seen material. Can you share some specific examples that will delight and excite Disney fans?
KMK: One of the joys of this creative process was having the chance to work very closely—though, mostly remotely!—with the amazing teams at the Walt Disney Archives, Walt Disney Archives Photo Library, the Walt Disney Imagineering Art Library, and numerous groups from across the Walt Disney World Resort to try and identify visual material that seemed fresh and engaging, or at a quality that just hadn’t been seen before. We’re so grateful for the support across the board; it really helped to make the book sing.

The Archives, for example, has preserved an absolute treasure trove of original print ephemera from the resort over the years that was just remarkable to cull through for this project. We feature some fun examples throughout the book, including a “Preview Month” ticket from October 1, 1971, also known as “Opening Day.” The ’70s colors and design of this rare example of admission media are just delicious to take in.

I think one of my favorite “behind the scenes” shots in the book comes from the chapter where we cover the construction of the resort; we feature an absolutely stunning photograph from inside Disney’s Contemporary Resort while it was being built. The black- and-white composition of the photograph has such a gorgeous quality to it, largely due to the grid of windows looking out from the hotel’s Grand Canyon Concourse. When we first reviewed the photo, it stuck out to us so much we immediately said, “We have to use this!”

There are lots of other fun examples peppered throughout the book, too, that we were excited to be able to include—things like original concept art for early cast member costumes and the original Country Bear Jamboree cover painting for the 1971 coloring book, A Visit to Walt Disney World; it felt like such an embarrassment of riches when it came to picking the final options for the book, which was tough!

A Portrait of Walt Disney World: 50 Years of The Most Magical Place on Earth

D23: How did your own experiences at Walt Disney World affect your approach to this book?
TO: All three of us came to this project with our own Walt Disney World memories and experiences. Me, as a Disneyland cast member, in 1983 at the age of… well, that’s not really important in this context, is it? Steven first visited in 1988 at age of one and a half (I was considerably older, let’s put it that way) during Mickey’s big 60th birthday celebration. Kevin visited in 1990 at the age of three (and now you know why I didn’t mention my age) around when the Yacht and Beach Club Resorts, plus the Swan and the Dolphin, made their debut. Our experiences through the decades started as guests but eventually expanded to include such roles as Jungle Cruise skipper, Imagineer, Archivist, event producer, marketer, spokesperson, etc., all the while having the privilege of getting to know many of the Walt Disney World pioneers, Disney Legends, and noted personalities. The imprints of all those memories and experiences are on display on every page of our book.

D23: Tell us about some of the people you interviewed for this and tease what they shared.
SV: As authors, we felt it important to include the voices of the designers, planners, builders, operators, and many others who have left an indelible mark on Walt Disney World. We are grateful to have interviewed nearly 100 individuals—cast members, Imagineers, celebrities, and guests. From opening day tour guides to Imagineers overseeing the next great attractions, we are proud to spotlight a diversity of representatives, united by an enduring love for this remarkable place.

We are also pleased to showcase the contributions of some of the Florida Project’s original “founders.” Incidentally, our first interview, held over lunch inside a Central Florida smokehouse, was with none other than Phil Smith, the first Walt Disney World cast member, who shared fond memories establishing the resort. (Phil was also asked to live on the Disney property to oversee things, which he did with his family in the years before construction began!)

A Portrait of Walt Disney World: 50 Years of The Most Magical Place on Earth
In 2013, Kevin and Steven (pictured right) traveled to meet with retired “Florida Project” executive Bob Foster (left), who headed the legendary land search and acquisition for the Walt Disney World property. Several fascinating stories from their interview are included in A Portrait of Walt Disney World: 50 Years of The Most Magical Place on Earth.

And retired legal vice president Robert Price “Bob” Foster graciously met with us over several years, reminiscing over his experiences scouting and acquiring more than 27,000 acres of Florida scrub and swamp… and negotiating with more than 100 individual landowners in the process! We’ve included many of Bob’s favorite stories from this fabled era in our “Building the Dream” chapter.

And of course, we’re thrilled to feature guest essays by three Disney notables who hold deep-rooted and lifelong connections to Walt Disney World—Dick Nunis (Disney Legend and retired chairman, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts), Debby Dane Browne (inaugural Walt Disney World Ambassador), and Roy Patrick Disney (grandson of Roy O. Disney). Through their recollections, readers will get a sense for what it was like to open the resort and even experience its colorful Grand Dedication weekend in October 1971.

A Portrait of Walt Disney World: 50 Years of The Most Magical Place on Earth is available now via Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-a-Million, Bookshop, and Indigo.
