While Disneyland had based its submarine attraction on the nuclear submarines that had been so much in the news in the late 1950s, by the time Walt Disney World was planned, the designers decided instead to pattern their 12 submarines after Capt. Nemo’s Nautilus. It quickly became one of the most popular attractions in the park. While the attraction closed in 1994, demolition did not occur until the summer of 2004.
