21st Century Fox On December 14, 2017, Disney announced its agreement to purchase a large part of the Murdoch family’s 21st Century Fox. Included in the deal were 21st Century Fox’s film production businesses, including 20th Century Fox, Fox Searchlight Pictures, Fox 2000 Pictures, Fox Family, and Fox Animation. Fox’s television creative units were also acquired, including 20th Century Fox Television, FX Productions, and Fox21, plus FX Networks; National Geographic Partners; Fox Networks Group International; Star India; and Fox’s interests in Hulu, Tata Sky, and Endemol Shine Group. The acquisition was completed March 20, 2019, for a total equity and transaction value of approx. $71 billion. In Jan. 2020, the 20th Century Fox film studio was renamed 20th Century Studios and Fox Searchlight Pictures was renamed Searchlight Pictures, with 20th Century Fox Animation later renamed 20th Century Animation; its main animation unit, Blue Sky Studios, would close in April 2021. In August 2020, it was announced that 20th Century Fox Television would be renamed 20th Television and that Fox 21 Television Studios would be renamed Touchstone Television. Then in December 2020, Touchstone Television was folded into 20th Television.
The company began in 1915 as the Fox Film Corporation, a motion picture production company created by pioneering film exhibitor William G. Fox. In 1935, it merged with Twentieth Century Pictures—a company that was formed a few years earlier by Joseph Schenck and Darryl F. Zanuck—and became Twentieth Century-Fox. Media tycoon Rupert Murdoch acquired the company in 1985 and merged it with his television companies under Fox, Inc., a unit of Murdoch’s News Corp. In 2013, News Corp. split its publishing and entertainment divisions into two groups—News Corp. and 21st Century Fox, the latter of which included Twentieth Century Fox and Twentieth Television. The film studio has been one of the most successful in Hollywood, with movies and franchises including The Grapes of Wrath, Miracle on 34th Street, All About Eve, Cleopatra, The Sound of Music, Planet of the Apes, Patton, M*A*S*H, Young Frankenstein, Star Wars, Alien, Die Hard, Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, Independence Day, Titanic, X-Men, Fight Club, Cast Away, Moulin Rouge!, Ice Age, Night at the Museum, Slumdog Millionaire, Avatar, Life of Pi, Deadpool, and The Greatest Showman.
