Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse’s Most Magical Day at Disney100: The Exhibition

By Jocelyn Buhlman

Disney100: The Exhibition opened this month at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, showcasing a dazzling display of over 250 treasures from across 100 years of Disney history. On February 15, D23 Gold Members got a sneak peek at the exhibition—but they weren’t the only ones who stopped by the museum. Our pals Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse joined in for the opening celebration, dressing extra-festive for their short visit in their dazzling platinum attire.

Mickey and Minnie hold hands in the “Where It All Began” gallery of Disney100: The Exhibition. They are both dressed in sparkling, platinum outfits with royal blue accents. To their left is a marquee for The Alice Comedies and a screen playing a clip from the Alice’s Wonderland short.

Our pals checked out the “Where It all Began” gallery, which celebrates the very start of Disney Animation, including the Alice Comedies and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit—along with a certain charming mouse duo!

Mickey and Minnie admire a display in Disney100: The Exhibition that showcases a large-screen depiction of Eyvind Earle’s artwork inside the Sleeping Beauty prop book. Mickey holds his hand out to the image, while Minnie applauds.

Over in the “Where Do the Stories Come From?” gallery, the platinum pair paused to admire the exhibit’s interactive display on the Sleeping Beauty prop book. While guests cannot open the actual, physical prop book, a special display lets them flip through pages of the book to view enlarged and animated versions of the pages—featuring beautiful art by Disney Legend Eyvind Earle.

Mickey and Minnie embrace while admiring the prop carousel horse from Mary Poppins. The horse, viewed in profile, is white with purple accents and white flowers.

The “Where Do the Stories Come From?” gallery highlights the inspiration sources for Disney films—from fairy tales to comic books! One of Disney’s most famous adaptations is Mary Poppins, and guests can admire several props from the film—including the original carousel horse that Mary herself rode in the “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” musical number.

In front of a red curtain, Minnie and Mickey lean in to admire Disney artwork showcased on desks lit by small, curved lamps. Minnie holds a hand to her face in the foreground, while behind her Mickey is focused on the art in front of him.

Music is an essential and beloved part of Disney magic, so naturally there’s a whole gallery dedicated to the Disney grooves that make our feet tap and our hearts sing! Mickey and Minnie couldn’t help but dance while visiting “The Magic of Sound and Music” gallery, but they also stopped to admire some of the featured art on display, including promotional art for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and concept art for Encanto.

Mickey and Minnie lean over an interactive table in the “Your Disney World” gallery. Behind them is an illuminated print of Peter Ellenshaw’s concept art for Disneyland. The wall behind them is designed to look like the building fronts of Main Street, U.S.A.

Some of our favorite places to experience Disney magic are Disney Parks, and Disney100: The Exhibition celebrates those happy places in the “Your Disney World” gallery. Besides showcasing Disney Parks items from the Walt Disney Archives, such as a Matterhorn Bobsleds attraction vehicle and a Red Demon Figure from Walt Disney World’s Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, the gallery also features an interactive table full of fun facts about every Disney Park! (Seasoned D23 Gold Members may recognize the art featured on the table, too!)

It’s hard not to be overcome with emotion and nostalgia while exploring Disney100: The Exhibit, and even Mickey and Minnie needed a moment to pause in front of the stunning model of Walt Disney World’s Cinderella Castle.

Mickey and Minnie hug Disney Legend Bob Gurr.

Mickey and Minnie weren’t the only Disney icons to visit the exhibit for a sneak peek—Disney Legend Bob Gurr, the Walt Disney Imagineer behind more than 100 attraction designs (including the Matterhorn Bobsleds vehicle displayed in the gallery), stopped by to visit the exhibit himself. Mickey and Minnie were so excited to see their friend that they just had to give him a big hug!

Our pals only had a quick visit to Philadelphia to visit Disney100: The Exhibit, but you can see it for yourself at The Franklin Institute. If you’re a D23 Gold Member in Philadelphia, you can get discounted admission to the exhibit here

Rogers: The Musical will Premiere at Disney California Adventure Park This Summer

By Jessica Benda

He may have started out as just a kid from Brooklyn, but Steve Rogers’ life turned out to be anything but ordinary. In fact, it’s the more-than-worthy focus of a musical production debuting on the Hyperion Stage at Disney California Adventure Park this summer.

Rogers: The Musical is a fictional Broadway production inspired by the first Captain America’s life, seen in a nearly five-minute segment on Disney+ series Hawkeye from Marvel Studios. Its arrival at Disneyland Resort will mark the first time it has appeared beyond the screen.

The one-act version of the show-stopping musical will be available for a limited time, with more details to be shared in the future. Disney Parks today shared a brief teaser of the upcoming production.

In Hawkeye, the musical premiered in 2024 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York City. It featured a show-stopping number called “Save the City,” based on the Battle of New York that takes place in The Avengers.  Songwriting team Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman co-wrote the lyrics, with Shaiman producing the actual song recording.

Be sure to stop by Disney California Adventure Park to catch Rogers: The Musical this summer.

Dressing Outside the Lines with shopDisney Princess Tiana Collection Designer Courtney Quinn

By Sarah Sterling

Courtney Quinn lives and breathes fashion.

After graduating with a masters degree in Business Administration, Quinn moved to New York City to pursue a career in fashion design. Along the way, she started a lifestyle brand, Color Me Courtney, as a creative outlet where she could showcase her dynamic sense of style and empower others to “Dress Outside the Lines.” Since starting Color Me Courtney, and her subsequent pop culture blog, Color Me Magic, Quinn has amassed more than 1 million followers across her social media platforms. And, as of D23 Expo 2022, Quinn accomplished one of her milestone goals—designing a fashion line with The Walt Disney Company. The Princess Tiana Collection by Color Me Courtney debuted on shopDisney at D23 Expo, and we sat down with Quinn to talk about the collection, her journey to this huge achievement, and what Princess Tiana means to her.

Two images of Courtney Quinn as a little girl. She appears to be no older than 6 in both photos. The first photo is of Quinn smiling really big at the camera and she is wearing a children’s Minnie Mouse costume dress. The second photo is of young Quinn in a Mad Tea Party attraction teacup vehicle. She is smiling at the camera in a pink shirt and jean overalls.

D23: You have always been a huge Disney fan. What gave you inspiration to combine your love for Disney with your passion for fashion?
Courtney Quinn (CQ): As a lifelong Disney fan, I think many of us dreamed of working with the company that means so much to us in some way. As a kid, I didn’t quite know it would look like it does now, but I am so grateful my online journey lead me here. I actually got my MBA at 21 and moved to New York with the hopes of working in fashion, but when I couldn’t get hired, I put @colormecourtney on my resume, removed my MBA, and eventually found myself working in product development at Coach. This was years ago, and I was living my “Hannah Montana life” (Courtney by day, Color Me Courtney by nights/weekends), while Coach was creating its first Disney collaboration. This caused me to dream (during my Color Me Courtney time) of what a collection I designed with Disney would look like. I was watching The Princess and the Frog around midnight while editing Halloween photos of myself dressed as Disney Princesses when I sketched out a Tiana inspired Minnie ear... and  the one you can shop in Disney Parks worldwide now is a near identical match to the dream that sparked so many years ago.

D23: How did your connection to Disney grow or change when The Princess and the Frog debuted in 2009?
CQ: I grew up loving characters like Jasmine and Gabriella (a Black, Deaf mermaid from The Little Mermaid TV series) and constantly watching Hercules and A Goofy Movie because of the nods to representation. There was a year growing up where I watched Hercules every night while doing my homework just to see The Muses, who meant so much to me. I don’t think I realized why at the time, but it was obviously because of the representation of seeing someone who looked like me and represented Black culture on the screen. Seeing a film centered around a Black Princess changed so much for so many people, including me. To feel represented and seen on the Disney Princess level helped further cement my bond with the brand. I still get chills knowing little girls now who look like me will never live in a world without a Black Disney princess.

A sample mood board created by Courtney Quinn as inspiration for the Princess Tiana Collection. The board features images of Tiana from The Princess and the Frog and images of Courtney in various outfits. In one image you can see Quinn’s fiancée, Paris, also dressed in colors reminiscent of Tiana’s green dress from the movie. There are color bubbles along the left side of the image, highlighting the yellow, green, and blue tones that can be found in The Princess and the Frog. Overall, it is a collage of inspiration for the collection featuring both Quinn’s own style and images directly from the animated film.

D23: What was the process of creating The Princess Tiana Collection for shopDisney? When did you start and what standout moments did you experience along the way?
CQ: The whole process was really a dream come true. We worked on the collection for years before I could even tell anyone or share anything about it, but I was secretly gathering information from my audience. I would ask about what they would love to see, product-wise, in Instagram captions and took note of their responses. I also thought of a lot of individual members of my Color Me community when designing pieces. One of the standout moments was when I got the call being asked to create the collection and some of the pitches I got to present. The original ask was to create a Disney-inspired collection, so we went through all the possibilities of what we would design before landing on the natural fit: Tiana.

D23: What parts of The Princess and the Frog inspired the designs in your collection? Do you have a favorite item in the collection?
CQ: It’s so hard to pick a favorite, but I had the idea of the ears and the varsity jacket for so long! The yellow dress is inspired specifically by the “Dig a Little Deeper” scene. I took a screen shot of the movie and the team was able to design a print around it that I absolutely love! A tulle skirt is something that’s always been signature to Color Me Courtney, just as showcasing the color palette of characters and looks is something I’ve done on my account. So, combining the two of those in one piece while capturing the essence of three of Tiana’s signature dresses was very special!

D23: What do you love about Tiana? In what ways do you relate to her character?
CQ: I love that everyone can relate to Tiana’s big dream and desire to make it come true, all while being inspired by her work ethic! Everyone has a dream, but not everyone is willing to go after it as fiercely as she does, so she serves as great inspiration in that way. I always encourage my community to shout their dreams, because if they can’t voice them out loud, how do they expect them to ever be made real?

Courtney Quinn and her fiancé, Paris, hold hands while walking down Main Street, U.S.A at Magic Kingdom, Cinderella Castle shining brightly in the sun behind them. Courtney is wearing a yellow dress, Tiana ears, and the Princess Tiana collection letterman jacket draped loosely around her shoulders. One hand is outstretched behind her, holding onto Paris, who is wearing the same letterman jacket and white pants.

D23: What was your experience like at D23 Expo, where you debuted The Princess Tiana Collection? How did it feel to finally have your collection live on shopDisney?
CQ: Wow, D23 Expo was so special to me! What a dream to be able to launch the collection there and meet so many Color Me Cuties and Color Me Minnies! I think one thing that was amazing about this collection is that I wasn’t the only one who got to design something, and I wasn’t the only woman of color. So often when I find myself in these spaces, I’m one of one, but being able to launch my fashion collection side-by-side with Ann Shen’s darling Aristocats line and Ashley Eckstein, who has changed the face of the Star Wars fandom, made it beyond what I could have dreamed. Because the dream isn’t for me to shine, it’s for everyone to feel seen and represented by these things we are creating for the community and sharing with others who want the same. It was truly something I’ll never forget and forever be grateful for.

D23: What does it feel like now to see Disney fans wearing pieces from your collection?
CQ: Oh, it is such a fun moment! I’ve been lucky enough to visit the parks quite a few times to see it all. When the collection first launched, most of the people buying at D23 Expo were members of my Color Me community, so I got to meet them for the first time and learn about why they loved certain pieces. But I’ve also gotten to just wander the parks and watch people who have no idea that I designed it find and fall in love with pieces, which is equally special as it shows the line stands on its own.

The last time I was at Walt Disney World, my friend pointed out someone wearing the ears and the skirt! We gushed about how cute she looked, and she noticed us doing so. It was a fun, full-circle moment, because the girl in the skirt, Mariah—who looked like she could be my model sister—shared why she decided to go after her dream of being a content creator. We’ve done a social media challenge called “Color Me Mermaid” on @colormemagic since the casting announcement of Halle Bailey in The Little Mermaid, and once upon a time I reposted one of Mariah’s looks. This gave her the confidence boost to create on her own! It’s just always further proof how much representation does matter, so seeing her in the look and hearing that story was a really fun moment for me.

A solo image of the Princess Tiana mouse ears. Courtney Quinn’s hand is holding the ears in front of a blurry Mark Twain Riverboat at Disneyland. The ears are a mint green, velvet material with pearl studs all over the ears. Across the headband and white, green, and blue petals.

D23: What is next for you? What would your ideal next collection center around and what takeaways did you get from the success of your first shopDisney collection?
CQ: Designing this collection has been my biggest dream come true, but I am dreamer—Disney made me that way—so, of course I have other dreams I would like to pursue! For starters, I want to do more on camera hosting at live events, and Disney has already made that dream real for me as I just got to announce and walk in the Disney Fairy Tale Weddings fashion show. But to quote Ariel, “I want more!” I’m hoping to get more into TV work of the unscripted nature! I’ve hosted a show before and starred in a commercial but want to continue working that way! And, of course, I hope I get the honor to design a Disney collection again because some of the other initial ideas we worked through are still so special to me and there are so many more I want to come to life!

You can shop The Princess Tiana collection on shopDisney and in person at the Disney Parks!

However, Mandy keeps her eyes focused on a different goal: her lifelong dream of attending Harvard. 5 Fantastic Things to Watch This Weekend Presented by State Farm®

Here we are… the final weekend of February! There’s much to mark the occasion with, from around the worlds of Disney: Keep “looking out for the little guy” with a viewing of Ant-Man and The Wasp on Saturday; go undercover with the Disney+ Original Movie Secret Society of Second-Born Royals on Disney Channel on Sunday; and more where that came from.

New Trailer for Disney+’s Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming, with Dave Letterman

Our pals at Disney+ just revealed the official trailer for Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming, with Dave Letterman, debuting globally Friday, March 17 on the streaming service.

The docu-special, from Disney Branded Television, premieres the same day as U2’s highly anticipated album Songs of Surrender, a collection of 40 re-recorded and reimagined U2 songs from across the band’s catalog. The first track, “Pride (In the Name of Love),” is already available.

Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville follows Dave Letterman on his first visit to Dublin to hang out with Bono and The Edge in their hometown, experience the city, and join the two U2 musicians for a concert performance unlike any they’ve done before.

From Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Documentaries, Neville’s Tremolo Productions, and Letterman’s Worldwide Pants, Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming, with Dave Letterman is part concert movie, part travel adventure, plus a whole lot of Bono and The Edge, with Letterman’s humor throughout.

As well as the concert performance itself, the docu-special will focus on the extraordinary relationship between Bono and The Edge and how it has developed across more than 45 years of close friendship to become one of the most remarkable songwriting partnerships in the history of rock ’n’ roll.

In the image on the left, singer Rihanna is wearing a shiny grey gown and is standing on the purple carpet at the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever premiere. A sign with the film’s logo is behind her. In the image on the right, singer Sofia Carson (left) and songwriter Dianne Warren (right) are sitting at a piano; Carson is slightly behind Warren. Both have dark hair; Carson is wearing a sleeveless top and gloves and large sparkly earrings, while Warren is wearing a grey scarf (dotted with music notes) and a blue velvet suit jacket.

Superstars to Perform at 95th Oscars®

We’re deep into awards season, and here’s some fabulous related news: Music superstar Rihanna, recently seen wowing millions with her halftime performance at the Big Game, will perform the Academy Award®-nominated song “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever at the 95th Oscars®.

“Lift Me Up,” with music by Tems, Rihanna, Ryan Coogler, and Ludwig Göransson and lyrics by Tems and Coogler, is nominated for Original Song. It is Rihanna’s first Oscar nomination.

But that’s not all: Actress and singer Sofia Carson, accompanied by songwriter Diane Warren, will perform the Oscar-nominated song “Applause” from Tell It like a Woman. This is Warren’s 14th Oscar nomination; in November 2022, she received an honorary award at the Academy’s Governors Awards. Carson is known to Disney audiences as Evie in the Descendants trilogy.

Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the 95th Oscars will be held at the Dolby® Theatre at Ovation Hollywood on Sunday, March 12, airing live on ABC and broadcast outlets worldwide. Mark those calendars!

Disney+ Debuts Trailer for Original Film Chang Can Dunk

The good folks over at Disney+ just revealed the trailer for Chang Can Dunk, a coming-of-age sports comedy that premieres Friday, March 10, exclusively on the streaming service. Take a look:

The film follows Chang, a 16-year-old, Asian American high school student in the marching band, who bets the school basketball star that he can dunk by Homecoming. The bet leads the 5’ 8″ Chang on a quest to find the hops he needs to dunk in order to impress his crush, Kristy, and finally gain the attention and respect of his high school peers. But before he can rise up and truly throw one down, he’ll have to reexamine everything he knows about himself, his friendships, and his family…

“This movie is my love letter to basketball,” first-time writer and director Jingyi Shao recently said, “and about how it helped me better understand family, friendship, and the Asian American/immigrant experience, about growing up and taking responsibility even when the odds are against you, and about learning to believe in yourself and break through not only the barriers set by others but more importantly, the barriers set by yourself.”

Chang Can Dunk stars Bloom Li, Dexter Darden, Ben Wang, Zoe Renee, Chase Liefeld, and Mardy Ma. The film’s producers are Rishi Rajani, Lena Waithe, and Brad Weston, with Pamela Thur serving as executive producer.

In concept art for San Fransokyo Square at Disney California Adventure Park at Disneyland Resort, a large sign denoting the “Port of San Fransokyo” is seen lit up along a dock at dusk, where there are several tables for an outdoor eating area. Lighting and small red and white flags criss-cross the seating area. The buildings in the background are blue and gray, and the water near the dock shimmers with the setting sun.

This Summer, Visit San Fransokyo Square at Disney California Adventure Park

In just a few months’ time, Pacific Wharf inside Disney California Adventure Park will officially debut as San Fransokyo Square! Inspired by Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Oscar®-winning Big Hero 6, the area will preserve many familiar favorites within a memorable new atmosphere…

True to its name, San Fransokyo is a fictional mash-up of Tokyo and San Francisco in the not-too-distant future. As the tech industry emerged and the local fishing trade lagged behind, entrepreneurs came together to reinvent the seaside canneries into a vibrant, multicultural district of neighborhood restaurants and small businesses.

Cross the San Fransokyo Gate Bridge—over the tide pools that link the square to the Paradise Gardens Park obelisk—before checking out the floating wind turbine atop an old fishing net tannery, which powers the district.

In concept art for San Fransokyo Square at Disney California Adventure Park at Disneyland Resort, the red and white sign for the new Port of San Fransokyo Cervecería restaurant is seen above a large seating area, filled with tables and chairs. It’s daytime, and red and white flags can be seen strung above the seating area; a tree can be seen to the left. Other restaurants can be spotted in the background.

Guests can still enjoy Pacific Wharf’s dining locations as San Fransokyo Square undergoes construction. When completed, recognizable faves will be joined by many new Asian-inspired selections. For instance, the new Port of San Fransokyo Cervecería draws inspiration from its tri-cultural influences, with signage in English, Japanese, and Spanish, while patrons can also enjoy a beer garden decorated with festoon lights and papel picado outside. And at the south end of the square, you might even find Baymax!

Look for San Fransokyo Square to open later this summer…

The Lion King Choreographer Garth Fagan Celebrated at Smithsonian Museum

By Jessica Bend

A lively performance swept away patrons in celebration of The Lion King’s award-winning choreographer Garth Fagan, the longest-running Black choreographer in Broadway history. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, The Lion King, and Garth Fagan Dance celebrated the Tony®, Olivier, and Helpmann Award winner and his iconic career on Monday, hosting a tribute performance in the museum’s Oprah Winfrey Theater.

Three dancers perform on stage, crouching on their toes and raising their right arm diagonally toward the ceiling. They wear simple silver shirts and black pants. The backdrop is bright blue.

Monday’s program was written and directed by Rufus Bonds Jr. and featured reimagined Fagan choreography by Norwood Pennewell, in addition to new choreography by Pennewell and Natalie Rogers-Cooper, and additional The Lion King staging by Ruthlyn Salomons. The performance featured dancers from The Lion King, including Michelle Camaya, Willia Noel Montague, Karine Plantadit, and Bravita Threatt, as well as dancers from Garth Fagan Dance.

In one of the museum’s wide halls, two performers sporting The Lion King T-shirts kick their left feet in the air. A crowd of people tries to mimic them as they learn the choreography.

The Lion King on Broadway’s L. Steven Taylor narrated the program, which featured vocalist Nova Payton and two percussionists from The Lion King: Horace Junior Wedderburn and Rolando Morales-Matos.

Lighting designer Jeanne Koenig, lighting programmer Haley Burdette, and stage manager Cherie B. Tay also contributed to the performance in Fagan’s honor.

A little girl kneels in front of a drum, grinning off to her right. She wears a white shirt, a plaid skirt, and black tights.

During the day, families enjoyed activities in support of the museum’s community day programming for Black History Month. Patrons were invited to try a drum circle, which highlighted African Rhythms in the style of The Lion King; join a scene building workshop set to “Hakuna Matata”; and don Virtual Reality goggles to watch “The Circle of Life” on stage in 360. In the main Legends Halls, patrons learned Fagan’s choreography to “He Lives in You.” There was also an arts and crafts area, where kids were encouraged to create custom Lion King masks.

On stage, Garth Fagan and Julie Taymor hug each other as performers smile and clap behind them. The backdrop is bright purple.

President Joe Biden penned a letter of congratulations to Fagan, which was read at the program’s conclusion. It was accompanied by comments from The Lion King’s Tony Award-winning director, Disney Legend Julie Taymor; Denise Robinson Simms, Associate Director of External Affairs of the National Museum of African American History and Culture;  and Sara Nash and Greg Reiner, Director of Dance and Director of Theater & Musical Theater for the National Endowment for the Arts, respectively.
