Exclusive: Mary Poppins’ Snow Globe Returns

By Jim Frye

“I honestly can’t remember why we kept most of this stuff to begin with,” says a grown-up Michael Banks, as he sifts through long-forgotten keepsakes in Mary Poppins Returns. He pauses to look at an old snow globe, dried out and bruised with age, but fans of the original film immediately identified the item as a key piece from the original 1964 film. A heartwarming reminder of  St. Paul’s cathedral and the Sherman brothers song “Feed the Birds,” beloved by audiences and Walt Disney himself.

Mary Poppins Returns snow globe

The 50-plus-year journey of that snow globe from the first film to the sequel is a noteworthy tale, involving the efforts of many people, all coordinated through the Walt Disney Archives. “One of the most special moments of Mary Poppins Returns was our visit to the Walt Disney Archives,” says John Myhre, production designer for the film. “Rob Marshall and I are lifelong Disney fans and the thought of actually seeing real props from the first film was overwhelming.” Archivist Kevin Kern guided the filmmakers through decades of Poppins history and artwork, while his colleague Rick Lorentz escorted them through the museum-like facility on The Walt Disney Studios’ Burbank lot.

Myhre continues: “Delicately laid out on the table was Mary Poppins’ carpet bag, some toys from the children’s room—including the blocks that spell out her name—and the St. Paul’s snow globe. Being over 50 years old, the snow globe had lost its water. It was beautiful and had a haunted lost memory feel to it. Rob knew instantly that it needed to be included in the attic set where Ben Whishaw, as Michael, finds memories from his past.”

The fact that the snow globe made it into the Archives in the first place is a pretty remarkable story itself, as recounted by Disney Legend and Walt Disney Archives founder Dave Smith: “Shortly after I founded the Archives in 1970, I started searching through attics, closets, basements, and storerooms to find any items or files that I felt had historical value and should be in the Archives,” Smith says. “The basement of the Animation Building held a treasure trove, with hundreds of boxes and file cabinets stashed down there and forgotten. Everywhere things could be stored, they were. There were even huge air-conditioning ducts in which boxes had been placed when there was no space for shelving.”

One day, while speaking to head janitor Roy Geysor in his office, Smith happened to notice something interesting on a shelf above Roy’s desk. “Looking closer, I realized that it was the actual snow globe containing a model of St. Paul’s cathedral in London which had been used as a prop in Mary Poppins. I asked Roy if he knew what it was, and he said no, that he had just found it in the trash one day and thought it looked cute.”

Rescued from the trash(!) and then recovered from the janitor’s shelf, the beloved prop became part of the Archives collection. “We’ve had the snow globe ever since the Archives started,” says current Archives director Becky Cline. “It doesn’t have water in it and the base was missing, but it has the little birds.”

Kevin Kidney with the Mary Poppins Returns snow globe

To re-create that base, Cline hired well-known designer Kevin Kidney in 2007. No stranger to designing for Disney, Kidney has worked on everything from theme park show props to collectible merchandise. “The original snow globe was handmade by one of my art heroes—Disney Legend Rolly Crump,” says Kidney. “The glass portion with the cathedral was on display in the Archives, but the metal base had been missing for nearly 50 years. I was able to re-create it from production stills and screen shots.”

It’s that snow globe—with its re-created base—that the Mary Poppins Returns filmmakers saw. Together with the archivists, however, they deemed the original globe too delicate to transport to London for use in the film, so, on the recommendation of Cline, they instead hired Kidney to re-create it. “With the help of the archivists I obtained photographs and measurements of the 1964 prop, and matched the colors and paint treatment for the miniature cathedral,” says Kidney. “For Mary Poppins Returns, I was tasked to build the entire snow globe—cathedral, birds, and all—but without water.”

Mary Poppins Returns snow globe

The Archives’ Nick Vega provided photographs and specific measurements for the task. The first step was to rough out the miniature cathedral using tiny pieces of basswood. The simple wooden form was then coated in a thin layer of epoxy putty and hand-painted. After painting, the big challenge was getting the cathedral to fit through the glass globe’s two-and-a-half-inch opening. “I wish I had Mary Poppins’ skills in packing a carpet bag,” cracks Kidney. “Fitting St. Paul’s Cathedral through the globe’s opening was challenging.” The main section had to be slid in at a sideways angle and, once inside the globe, the two towers could be attached using pliers—similar to building a ship in a bottle. The base that supports the globe is made of three metal bands curled into a cylinder shape and decorated with antique jewelry pieces and custom-sculpted parts. The entire surface was then brushed with a series of washes so the metal would look aged and patinated.

Mary Poppins Returns snow globe

“In the movie, the globe is discovered by grown-up Michael Banks in the cluttered attic of the Banks House,” says Kidney. “John Myhre explained that they placed it in the attic because ‘that’s where Jane and Michael’s childhood went.’ Though it’s only onscreen for a brief moment, the snow globe is instantly familiar to generations of Poppins fans, and it had to be spot-on.”

It was definitely instantly familiar to Dave Smith: “When I saw Mary Poppins Returns,” says Smith, “I was thrilled to see that, sure enough, there was a snow globe based on that original one I found almost 50 years ago.”

Mary Poppins Returns snow globe

That old snow globe has definitely gone on a yeoman’s journey—first appearing at 17 Cherry Tree Lane in the 1964 film, then miraculously surviving a trash bin before landing on a janitor’s shelf only to be re-discovered and preserved by the Walt Disney Archives, and finally re-created for a whole new generation of Mary Poppins-loving fans. It’s just as Emily Blunt, as Mary, sings in Mary Poppins Returns, “Nothing is gone forever, only out of place.”

7 Questions with Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel’s Jude Law

By Jim Frye

Prolific actor Jude Law has portrayed a slew of memorable characters over his career, ranging from Dr. Watson in Sherlock Holmes and Dickie Greenleaf in The Talented Mr. Ripley, to younger Albus Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beast films. His latest role, however, finds him leading a galactic special forces-style team in Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel, hitting theaters March 8. D23 caught up with Law on the super-secret set of Captain Marvel to find out all about his character and how he fits into the outer-space world of the Kree, the Skrulls, and the Supreme Intelligence.

jude law captain marvel

D23: What can you tell us about your character?
J.L.: He heads Starforce, which is an elite special forces-like group of Kree warriors, and he is also mentor to Carol Danvers, Brie’s [Larson] character.

D23: What is his relationship with Carol Danvers?
J.L.: Their relationship as mentor-mentee, and pupil-sensei, and how they met, and what they offer to each other are very much at the heart of the film.

D23: What can you tell us about the other members of the Starforce team?
J.L.: I can talk about Djimon [Hounsou]—Korath—who appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy. Obviously, this is a few years before, so a young Korath; he is second in command. Minn-Erva, played by Gemma Chan, is a sniper, and a long-range specialist. We have Bron-Char, who’s basically a blue giant, played by Rune Temte, from Norway. And Algenis [Soto] plays Att-Lass; he’s another sniper expert, or weapons specialist.

D23: Can you talk about the camaraderie on set?
J.L.: This has been a real joy, actually, because on a big piece like this, there were many moments where it’s very fragmented, so I’ve done an awful lot on my own. It’s a nice feeling when Starforce is all together—if anything, just so that we can all complain about where our suits are chafing. It’s always nice to have that camaraderie. Film sets are fun places; there’s also a camaraderie with the crew. We have a lot to do, so to have moral support around you, and build those relationships and that chemistry, is always going to be a highlight of the job.

jude law captain marvel

D23: Have you had any fun action sequences?
J.L.: Yes, a fair few. I’ve been doing boxing and martial arts for years, so it’s fun to just get a lot more hands-on, tactical, hand-to-hand combat. And then there are a couple of other fantastic battle sequences that were great fun.

D23: What is the Supreme Intelligence?
J.L.: There’s a sort of divine element [with the Kree] called the Supreme Intelligence and that comes to play in this. My character has a very particular relationship with the Supreme Intelligence. It’s quite complex, and ultimately very revealing of what it is that motivates him. He’s got a kind of divine sense of purpose because of his relationship with this greater being.

D23: Describe the conflict between the Kree and the Skrulls.
J.L.: The Kree and the Skrulls are constantly in conflict, so both communities are living really at high alert, and both obviously live with huge wariness of each other. And as a commander of the Kree military, my character is somewhat judgmental and full of hatred for the Skrulls. The Skrulls, to the Krees, really represent despicable maneuvering and manipulation. Because the Skrulls can simulate other people—they turn into other things—it’s this idea of subterfuge, that you are not who you really are, whereas the Kree have a kind of purity about them, and an honesty, as far as I see it.

By D23 Team

Calling all of Bachelor Nation, it’s time to finally answer the question: What does Colton have to lose? The new year marks a new beginning for The Bachelor and Colton Underwood, who embarks on the journey of a lifetime to find his perfect match this Monday, January 7, with a live, three-hour premiere airing on ABC (8–11 p.m. EST).

This season, 30 bachelorettes will look to capture the Bachelor’s heart as the 23rd edition of the hit series begins, and over the course of the season, fans can look forward to celebrity appearances by super Bachelor fan couples Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman and Terry and Rebecca Crews, as well as guest spots from actor-comedian Billy Eichner and comic actor Fred Willard.

The Bachelor

The game that captured the hearts of Bachelor Nation is back with all-new game play! Fans can now visit ABC.com/BFL, the ABC App and the ESPN Fantasy App to play The Official Bachelor Fantasy League, which allows players to compete with family, friends, and the rest of #BachelorNation by building a weekly lineup of Bachelorettes based on weekly categories ranging from who gets a rose to who kisses Colton. The Bachelor Fantasy League sweepstakes is open to legal U.S. residents, 18 or older. Chris Harrison, who returns as host, chats with Colton ahead of his journey. They discuss the backlash he received after he was announced as the new Bachelor, his feelings about becoming a husband, and the daunting prospect of getting to know 30 smart, beautiful women—all at the same time.

The Bachelor

Of course, the Bachelor isn’t the only one who is anxious. Each of these eager, accomplished women wants to make a lasting first impression on the man who may become her future husband. Once the Bachelor enters the mansion, all bets are off and the race to find love is on. The limo exits and introductions are only the beginning of a night Colton isn’t likely to forget. From being swept away by a very assertive woman, to being surprised at how much chemistry he feels with some of the women, to a couple of kisses, it’s the beginning of an epic journey.

By the end of the evening, 23 bachelorettes will remain to embark on wild romantic adventures with Colton around the world—including fabulous locales that include Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Portugal, and even Colton’s hometown of Denver, Colorado—as they vie to become the love of his life.

This season will also feature special appearances from familiar famous faces, who also happen to be Bachelor fans. Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman—a blissfully wedded couple themselves—offer unconventional advice and unusual performance tips to a group of the women who must share their personal stories with Colton about their “firsts.” Actor/comedian Billy Eichner presides over a fierce summer camp-type competition as some of the bachelorettes relive their childhoods. However, you might not realize that there’s another bit of Disney magic to be found in the film, and it’s a tribute to the Happiest Place on Earth.

As a nod to Disneyland, director Rob Marshall and production designer John Myhre hid some outlines of the distinct ears and head of Mickey Mouse in the set of the park where the Banks children first encounter Mary Poppins herself.

The Mickeys are hidden throughout the set and may not always be visible while you’re watching the film… but lucky for you, we have a special look at six of the hidden Mickeys!

Every Magical Disney Moment from 2018

By the D23 Team

Mary Poppins

Cinematic Sensations
We tessered, broke a Kessel Run record, went on another adventure beneath the trees of the Hundred Acre Wood, and tripped more than a few lights fantastic. All of that just in one year! There’s no doubt that 2018 has been one for the books starting off the year in a novel way by bring Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time from pages to screen. But, that wasn’t the only world we got to see for the first time. We traveled beyond our wintery imaginations into the four different lands of The Nutcracker and the Four Realms with Clara as our guide. Not to mention, we jumped to light speed and explored a galaxy far, far away with our favorite scoundrel and his favorite co-pilot in Solo: A Star Wars Story. But, they weren’t the only old friends we revisited. We also met back up with Winnie the Pooh and the entire gang in Christopher Robin, the Parr family for another super-powered adventure in Incredibles 2, went viral with Ralph Breaks the Internet, and saw our favorite gravity-defying nanny land for another heartwarming, musical tale in Mary Poppins Returns.

Black Panther

A Super Powered Year
What a SUPER year for Marvel Studios. In February, we said “Wakanda forever!” with the spectacular Black Panther, which reigned supreme in the box office (and in our hearts!). Just when you thought Marvel movies couldn’t be bigger, in April we celebrated 10 years of Marvel movies culminating into one epic story— Avengers: Infinity War. We’re STILL getting emotional about that ending!

Ant-Man and the Wasp was there to cheer us up in July (we have to say that end credits scene was highly ANT-icipated), rounding out a year of spectacular Marvel films!

Coco

We’ll Never Forget These Wins
While 2018 was a big year for movies, it was also a big year for a 2017 film. It only took a trip to the Land of the Dead for us to fall head over heels in love with Miguel and his familia in Coco. And  the Academy agreed. We would be hard pressed ever to forget Coco’s big night at the Oscars, taking home Best Animated Feature and Original Song for “Remember Me.”

D23 Events
An exciting year of D23 events began with international magic, as we celebrated with our fans in Japan for D23 Expo Japan 2018. Between adorable merchandise, exciting announcements, and unforgettable appearances, Disney fans had an experience they’ll never forget. Check out a highlight from D23 Expo Japan 2018 below:

With such a great start, we knew this year would be one for the books—from celebrating our Disney favorites, such as Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s 20th anniversary to the debut of Frozen on Broadway, and even hearing from the creators of some of our favorite Disney Saturday morning cartoons. We brought back some of our classic events, such as when D23 Members returned to Walt’s hometown of Marceline for a charming, historical visit. Plus, our annual Fanniversary celebration this year was a bewitching double celebration, with screenings across the country of two spooktacular classics: Hocus Pocus and Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas.

2018 was a year of firsts for us as well! We traveled to Emeryville, California, for a very special tour of Pixar Animation Studios, where we watched sneak previews of upcoming Pixar projects! We also channeled our inner nerd and hosted two panels at San Diego Comic-Con—our very first time hosting panels at that convention! There we celebrated Mickey’s 90th anniversary at “Celebrating 90 Years of Mickey Mouse with D23: The Official Disney Fan Club,” diving into his amazing past and taking a look to his future with a special unveiling of his birthday portrait!

We also got spooky with our “25 Tears of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas,” panel, which featured members of the talented production crew and special guest host Neil Gaiman!

Finally, our year came to a close with our biggest event of 2018—Destination D: Celebrating Mickey Mouse. This event at the Contemporary Resort at Walt Disney World was a two-day extravaganza fit for Mickey’s 90th! We got to hear the latest Disney Parks announcements, learned the weird and wacky history behind Mickey, and even got to party in our PJs with Mickey and his pals! It was a celebration we’ll never forget.

Celebrating the True Original
We may have ended 2018 with a huge party for Mickey, but the celebration of his 90th anniversary lasted all year long! From spectacular on ABC to a brand-new opportunity to, we honored Mickey’s amazing legacy in style. Did you visit the Mickey: The True Original Exhibition? Or pick up some special merch made just for this milestone? No matter what way you celebrated, all Disney fans came together to honor the mouse who started it all.

Amazing New Fun at Disney Parks Around the World
This year was huge for fans of some small starts—the world of Toy Story came to life at both Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Shanghai Disney Resort with the opening of Toy Story Land, an amazingly detailed new world celebrating Disney•Pixar’s classic tale of childhood toys. But the Pixar fun didn’t stop there! Over the summer, we celebrated Pixar Fest at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure before having fun in the sun at Pixar Pier. D23 Members even got the chance to check out the pier first, including a special ride on the Incredicoaster!

Over in Tokyo Disneyland, celebration was in full swing for the park’s 35th anniversary. The attraction it’s a small world reopened with special appearances from some of our favorite Disney characters, plus a brand-new nighttime spectacular, Celebrate! Tokyo Disneyland, dazzled guests with state-of-the-art projection.
