For 10 years, Disneynature films have given us an incredible look at some of the wonderful and wondrous things that call Earth home, right from the comfort of a theater or even our own living rooms. To celebrate, we’re taking a look back at these unforgettable films, all leading up to today’s release: Penguins.
Earth
What better way to start a Disneynature marathon than with Earth? It is, where it all began, after all. Earth follows the story of three animal families—polar bears, elephants, and humpback whales—as we watch their remarkable stories unfold. And, for what it’s earth, this Disneynature feature was narrated by James Earl Jones, who also lent his iconic voice to Mufasa and Darth Vader.
The Crimson Wing: Mystery of the Flamingos
Narrated by Mariella Frostrup, The Crimson Wing: Mystery of the Flamingos is a story of love, courage, and survival, starring our favorite flock of festively flushed fowl. With all of that in one movie, how can you resist watching it? And we highly recommend that you do. Don’t make us put our foot down.
Oceans
Since we’ve already learned about the Earth as a whole, it’s time to dive a little bit deeper and get pacific—uh specific. Oceans lets you venture into the depths of, well, the ocean, getting an up-close-and-personal look at the creatures that call the saltwater home (no scuba training required). Narrated by Pierce Brosnan, Oceans features state-of-the-art underwater filmmaking that we guarantee will take your breath away.
Wings of Life
Academy Award® winner Meryl Streep narrates this stunning look at amazing winged creatures. From butterflies and hummingbirds, to bees and bats, Wings of Life celebrates these fascinating species that you can find in the sky. And we have to say, we think this Disneynature film is pretty fly.
African Cats
Narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, African Cats follows Mara, a lion cub; Sita, a cheetah who is a single mother of five newborns; and Fang, a leader of the pride. Now this isn’t a joke, and we’re certainly not lion, this Disneynature film holds a tremendous supply of heart, humor, and love.
Chimpanzee
Buzz Lightyear himself took a break from battling the evil Emperor Zurg to narrate the Disneynature film Chimpanzee.Tim Allen narrates the story of Oscar, a young chimp who has a rather entertaining approach to life. With the world as his playground, there’s no telling how far he’ll go as he navigates the terrain of the forest in this 2012 film.
Bears
John C. Reilly lends his voice to Bears, the 2014 Disneynature film that introduces us to a particularly adorable family (seriously they’re so cute, it’s unbearable). We join mother Sky and cubs Amber and Scout (who don’t eat as many Scottish pastries as we’d imagined) in their Alaskan home as the trio faces everything from bitter cold to hibernation as they learn to live life to the absolute fullest.
Monkey Kingdom In Monkey Kingdom—narrated by Tina Fey—we travel all the way to the jungles of South Asia to meet Maya and her son Kip. These two clever macaque monkeys know a thing or two about swinging through life, but it isn’t always easy. In this Disneynature film, we get to take a step inside their magical world of ancient ruins in the storied jungles of South Asia to witness all the love between this mother and her son.
Born in China
Now, we don’t want to start any pandamonium or anything, but Born in China explores three animal families—panda, golden monkey, and snow leopard—in their natural habitats in China. From the frigid mountains to the bamboo forests, this film brings an incredible unseen world to the big screen in a way you never imagined.
Penguins
Now that we’ve broken the ice for you, and you’ve become acquainted with some of Disneynature’s earlier animal adventures, you’re ready for the latest chapter. Steve is the star of the latest film from Disneynature, Penguins, which debuts in theaters today. In this coming-of-age film, the Adélie penguin joins millions of fellow males in the frozen Antarctic spring on a quest to build a nest and raise a family. Narrated by Ed Helms, Penguins is the eighth theatrical release from Disneynature, and we’re sure you won’t want to miss it.
Plus, we’re all invited to join Disneynature to make a difference and help protect the planet. For every ticket sold during opening week of Penguins (April 17–23), Disneynature will make a donation to the Wildlife Conservation Network to protect penguins around the globe. You can get your tickets here.
Ten years ago, Imagineering Executive Creative Producer Mark Schirmer told Disney twenty-three how he and fellow Imagineers brought their Monsters, Inc.Ride & Go Seek! dark ride to light at Tokyo Disneyland. In honor of the 10-year anniversary of this innovative attraction, we look back at the story Schirmer wrote for the publication.
Our journey began at Tokyo Disneyland in 2004, as it was becoming increasingly important to find something new to replace the long-closed Meet the World attraction in Tomorrowland. We knew that the film release of Monsters, Inc. had been extremely popular in Japan, and that the Tokyo parks didn’t really have any Monsters presence.
Understanding that the Japanese public had a desire to embrace the warm, friendly characters who are part of this rich story, Imagineers focused on the storytelling aspect of the film. After all, in the Magic Kingdom, it’s all about storytelling. We looked to our WDI roots to find the best possible way to tell the Monsters, Inc. story, and it didn’t take long for us to get inspiration from our traditional “dark ride” attractions that have immersed and entertained guests for years. (Snow White’s Scary Adventures and Peter Pan’s Flight are two prime dark rides at Disneyland.) We decided on the dark-ride concept, wanting to raise the bar on the experience. The pressure was on to define new and fun ways for them to become part of the story and provide another reason to return to the parks.
Happily Ever Laughter
Our story for Tokyo Disneyland guests begins where the Monsters, Inc. movie leaves off, with the monsters realizing that the human world is not harmful to them and that laughter is more powerful than the screams that they’ve been collecting. So Monsters, Inc. (the energy provider for all of Monstropolis) changes its corporate strategy and begins collecting laughs rather than screams. And, you guessed it: they turn the company “scare floor” into the “laugh floor” to get kids to laugh. We even changed the company motto in the front of the building to read, “It’s Laughter We’re After.”
In the context of friendly laughter, we needed to find a way for Boo, the young girl from the film, to reunite with her pals Sulley and Mike. During early brainstorming sessions, we wanted Boo to return to Monstropolis to see her old friends and meet new ones. The team struggled with different ideas and reasons for Boo to return. We also were challenged to introduce an element of guest interactivity that would help set this apart from other attractions and encourage repeat visitation. Exploring different ways for guest interaction with the characters, we hit upon the idea of flashlight tag! This was the ideal solution, covering all the bases while differentiating it from the Buzz Lightyear attractions. As flashlight tag requires a darkened, nighttime environment, we again looked to the movie for cues, and decided that the point of flashlight tag was not to focus on keeping score but as a means of finding as many hidden monsters as possible.
Making Monstropolis
Monsters, Inc. Ride & Go Seek! faithfully re-creates scenes from the movie, with “hyper-realistic” qualities. Looking back, our biggest challenge revolved around the idea of creating an actual city environment, complete with two-way traffic down Monstropolis’ main street, which is flanked by multi-story businesses and apartment buildings. We needed to allow for a space wide enough and tall enough to make this idea believable. To do this, some of these buildings would have to be as tall as those on Disneyland’s Main Street, U.S.A.! Our next concern was the placement of all the Audio-Animatronics® figures and the unique effects we were hoping to incorporate on both sides of the street.
So, as part of the design process, it was decided to build a full-size mock-up of the street in one of our production facilities in North Hollywood. Not only did this give our design team the ability to view the building facades from the exact guest perspective, it allowed us to determine the appropriate rhythm for the dialogue and actions of the figures throughout the scene. Because we wanted everyone to feel they have a front-row seat, we were also able to stage the figures as close as possible to our guests.
Ultimately, there are many individual elements from the show that are quite amazing: the disappearing Randall in Monstropolis; the characters hiding in the locker room; Boo’s floating door where we can actually see into her room. With flashlights in hand, they’ll be able to uncover many of the fun, hidden layers throughout the attraction. There are so many cool details, and we’ve tried to make it a place to which guests can’t wait to return, to see what else they can find. They might try to figure out how many Rockys there are, where the hidden Mickeys are, and even engage Roz in an active dialogue at the end of the show. And, as it turns out, she has a lot to say!
Can’t-Miss Hidden Details
The Imagineers who created the attraction filled it to the brim with cool details, Easter eggs, and references that sharp-eyed Disney•Pixar fans should keep an eye out for. Here are five you should keep an eye out for:
In the power room, pay close attention to the moon as Randall is always lurking. You’ve heard of the “hidden Mickey.” We have a hidden Randall.
The clock in our locker room scene is permanently set to 10:28 p.m. This is in tribute to the film’s worldwide premiere on October 28, 2001.
Rocky is the cute little reoccurring character with orange fur and a construction helmet designed specifically for this ride. Not every hard hat in the attraction is his, so the challenge is to find where he’s hiding.
In the movie, large lovable Ted appears with Mike and Sulley walking to work. Ted is so big, all we see are his legs. This was a collaboration between our WDI show designer, Larry Nikolai, and Pixar for style reviews. This attraction finally gave us the chance to develop the rest of him. Now we can see all of him as he tries to hide behind laundry lines in Monstropolis.
We created a Japanese sushi restaurant, and it was a fun collaboration with our Japanese partners. Everyone pitched in to create appropriate details for this scene. Look for the eyeball sushi along with some funny faces made up of the individual sushi pieces.

This article originally appeared in a slightly different form in the Summer 2009 issue of Disney twenty-three and was modified for D23.com.
D23 is on the ground at Star Wars Celebration 2019 at McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago all weekend, capturing the out-of-this world announcements, presentations, exhibits, and excitement. Whether it’s a preview of The Mandalorian (Jon Favreau’s ambitious new Star Wars live-action series planned for Disney+) our favorite outlandish costumes and cosplay, an insider’s look at the soon-to-open Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, or the brand-new teaser trailer for Episode IX, we’ll bring you all the excitement and energy from the weekend. Be sure to follow us on our social channels for the latest updates—and a few special guests to boot!
After seeing this morning’s The Mandalorian panel at Star Wars Celebration 2019, all we can say is Disney+ can’t come fast enough! (November 12—mark your calendars now!)
This has been a morning of surprises—the first of which is the blizzard that socked it to Chicago today, dumping sloppy, slushy snow all over the Sunday of Star Wars Celebration 2019. This might be old hat for Chicagoans (hearty folks!), but for the rest of us, sludging through the near white-out conditions in tennis shoes and Star Wars T-shirts brings back images of Hoth, tauntauns, and a certain “and I thought they smelled bad on the outside” quote from Han.
But the weather couldn’t cool the heated, almost electric, atmosphere inside the Celebration Stage arena for The Mandalorian panel. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, series creator and show-runner Jon Favreau (director of Iron Man, Disney’s Jungle Book), and longtime Lucasfilm TV creator Dave Filoni (Rebels and The Clone Wars) were greeted like the rock stars they are—the excitement level in the arena nearly eclipsed what we experienced in the Episode IX panel. They were joined onstage by series stars Pedro Pascal, Gina Carano, and Carl Weathers.
Explaining the setting and world of The Mandalorian, Favreau, who’s also been busy directing this summer’s upcoming live-action The Lion King, said, “I was the right age when I saw the first Star Wars movie—with the cantina, and the smugglers, and the underworld. It was a very rich environment to tell a story in.”
Series star Pascal agreed, saying, “The Mandalorian is a mysterious, lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy. Some might say he has questionable moral character, in line with some of our best Westerns and some good samurai [movies].” Pascal went on to say he tried to put a lot of Clint Eastwood into the character, harking back to the Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns.
Favreau and Filoni first met each other at Skywalker Ranch while both men were working on projects—Favreau was finishing Marvel Studios’ Iron Man, and Filoni was on The Clone Wars, Season 1. Each of them showed the other the very first screening of their projects, and an instant bond was formed. Favreau even voiced a character—Pre Vizsla—in The Clone Wars.
The Mandalorian occurs approximately five years after the events of Return of the Jedi and follows Pascal’s character as a sort of outlaw gunslinger in a semi-lawless post-Empire galaxy. Fans will recognize his armor as similar to that of Boba Fett. It’s not the same character, but don’t worry if you don’t know all that history—everything will make sense once the new series lands in November.
And speaking of landing, the Mandalorian character pilots a cool, new ship called The Razorcrest. Favreau and Filoni were nearly giddy as schoolboys as they revealed that they used an actual miniature model of the ship in the series—harking back the way the ships were filmed in the early Star Wars films. Which only makes sense, considering the reverence both share for Star Wars creator George Lucas. As a matter of fact, Lucas stopped by the set one day, a highlight for both Favreau and Filoni.
Here are a couple of other cool things we learned today. The 501st Stormtrooper Legion, a group of cosplaying fans who create their own armor and make appearances at charity events and conventions, were asked to participate as performers—the first time they’ve been involved this way. Filoni admitted it will now be a HUGE deal that these fans—both male and female—can now call their armor “screen-used.”
Also, in some exclusive footage, fans erupted in delight at the sight of IG-88, one of the bounty hunters from The Empire Strikes Back, along with a Devaronian, one of the horned, devilish-type aliens first seen in the cantina in A New Hope. We also saw some Kowakian monkey-lizards in cages in a marketplace scene. These creatures are best known by their most famous member, Salacious Crumb, the small, screeching creature that sat on Jabba the Hutt’s lap in Return of the Jedi.
We could go on and on about the panel, but suffice it to say that two of Star War’s biggest fans—Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni—have partnered to create what is sure to be one of the most exciting projects—the very first live-action series—ever to blast out of the Star Wars universe. Like we said before, Disney+ can’t come soon enough!
Dave Filoni came back that afternoon to preview the surprise final season of the massively popular The Clone Wars, also premiering on Disney+ later this year.
Between those two marquee panels, a “blizzard” of other events took place, including the Warwick Davis conversation with Alan Tudyk panel. Tudyk, known to Star Wars fans as the no-nonsense droid K-2SO in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, is returning to the character with his co-star, Diego Luna, who played Cassian Andor, in a yet-to-be-titled prequel series to the film that features the exploits of the two characters. “How do you feel about the return to K-2SO?” asked Davis, to which Tudyk replied, “It’s so exciting. Diego promised me a paella. He’s a good cook.”
The last big panel in the Celebration Stage arena on Sunday was Star Wars: The Clone Wars Sneak Peek. It featured Dave Filoni, supervising director, plus stars Ashley Eckstein (Ahsoka Tano), Dee Bradley Baker (Rex), Sam Witwer (Darth Maul), and more of the cast. They previewed lots of exclusive footage from the upcoming series, soon to premiere with Disney+, including one scene that nearly made series star Eckstein cry. “I never thought that we’d be here, watching this scene,” she said, referring to a sequence where Rex and his clones all painted their helmets to honor Ahsoka. She and the other actors were surprised at the decision to do another season of the series—surprised, but very, very happy!
Actor Sam Witwer was stoked to finally find out about the long-gestating “The Siege of Mandalore,” a scene he described as “my favorite stuff we’ve done as the character, and Dave wrote it personally.” When he went on to describe the scene—albeit cryptically to maintain the surprise—Filoni squirmed, nervous that Witwer was coming way too close to giving away any of the secrets. It’s a scene that Filoni had imagined for the past 10 years, but never was able to bring to the small screen—until now! Witwer was also excited by the fact that Ray Park, who played Darth Maul in 1999’s The Phantom Menace, returned to lend his movements—via motion capture—to the character in The Clone Wars.
In the end, Filoni gave credit where credit is due—to Disney Legend George Lucas, the man who created the Star Wars universe, and laid the groundwork for so much that was to follow. “George really knew what he was doing,” said Filoni, “and laid the foundation that was so alive.”
Over the bridge and two floors down from the main convention floor was the Fantasy Flight Gaming Room, where players could stop by any of the tables and take part in one of the many Star Wars tabletop games, including X-Wing and Star Wars: Destiny. Up on the main floor, however, eager fans scoped out hard-to-find exclusives, such as the Rancor Monster 45 oz. mega tiki mug, along with the accompanying Luke Skywalker mini mug that fit neatly in the Rancor’s hand. Speaking of tiki, if you were lucky, you could also pick up the Death Star tiki tumbler or even the huge Millennium Falcon Mega Mug, along with the Han and Chewie mug set. Other hot items were the Lando Calrissian Hawai‘ian shirt, and the super-kitchy Boba Fett tin lunchbox—which featured a Boba Fett design from the notorious Star Wars Holiday special.
Even though the snow was pounding outside with flights being canceled a dozen at a time, this day was memorable for far more than the blizzard. Favreau, Filoni, Eckstein, Witwer, Tudyk, the fans, the exclusives, and the collective spirit of hope that Star Wars embodies—years from now, people will look back and say, “Remember April 14, 2019?” To which they’ll be answered: “Yeah, that’s the year we first heard about The Mandalorian. The Clone Wars. And the new offerings on Disney+.” And then, “Oh—I think it also snowed, too.”
Saturday April 13
Are you ready to actually STEP INTO your own Star Wars adventure? Literally. We mean, are you ready to walk on alien soil, touch galactic machinery, and hide with the rebellion? We are—and so is actor Josh Gad (Frozen, voice of Olaf, Beauty and the Beast, Le Fou), who surprised fans by showing up to host the panel “Bringing Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge to Life at Disney Parks” at the 2019 Star Wars Celebration, currently under way in Chicago. “Disney bought me as part of the Fox acquisition,” he joked.
In a hilarious video shared on the big screen in Celebration Stage arena, Gad documented his attempt to get a “sneak peek” into the 14-acre mega-development, opening May 31 at Disneyland Park in Anaheim and August 29 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort. In the video, he tried every trick in the book to convince the Disney security Cast Members to let him past the construction walls and into the nearly finished Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge world—even going so far as to promise autographs for the Cast Member’s daughter. When his attempts proved less than fruitful, he called Scott Trowbridge, Portfolio Creative Executive, Walt Disney Imagineering, to help him out. Trowbridge was more than happy to see Gad, but, alas, could not let him in—even after Gad returned a long-ago-borrowed VHS copy of Pretty Woman. Of course, Trowbridge had no memory of loaning the tape, and had to turn Gad away. The video ended with the appropriate tag: Pretty Woman is now available on DVD.
Gad was joined onstage by the high-level team from Disney and Lucasfilm responsible for the creation of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. They included Chris Beatty, Margaret Kerrison, Doug Chiang, Matt Martin, Asa Kalama, and Scott Trowbridge. To kick things off, fans were treated to a very special video message from Mark Hamill himself, touting the partnership between charitable organization Force for Change and FIRST, an organization dedicated to getting kids involved with STEM learning and activities. Check it out here, and find out about the very cool sweepstakes taking place.
The team then showed off multiple videos, photos, and exclusive previews of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, taking viewers inside the two new attractions anchoring the land: Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.
One particular cool piece of information jumped out at us—a certain “small, green” Jedi would be having a part (still shrouded in secrecy) in the new land—Yoda! And, most exciting of all, Frank Oz—the legendary puppeteer who originally voiced Yoda—again returns as the voice of the much-revered Jedi master. We can’t wait.
The team then talked about the very cool specialty lightsabers that guests will be able to create—an exclusive to the lands. And they treated the audience to some samples of the music that Rex—a newly minted DJ after his not-so-successful experience as a pilot in Star Tours—has created for Oga’s Cantina. And yes, Star Tours favorite R-3X (formerly known as Captain Rex) is once again voiced by actor Paul Rubens, who created some hilarious new lines for the experience.
And remember that character named Nien Nunb, who appeared alongside Lando Calrissian in the co-pilot’s seat of the Millennium Falcon in Return of the Jedi back in 1983? Well, the Imagineers tracked down the original voice actor Bill Kipsang Rotich (in Africa!) to voice again the character, who is making his return to Galaxy’s Edge. Be on the lookout for him!
One of the “coolest” attractions at Galaxy’s Edge, though, will be the exclusive brand-new Coca-Cola drink containers, designed to perfectly match the industrial and otherworldly feel of the land. Check them out right here.
Toward the end of the presentation, Gad admitted that yes, he had already been granted a tour of the soon-to-open Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Anaheim.
“I stood in front of the Millennium Falcon, and I started to cry,” he said, blaming part of it on the abundance of pollen in the air—but not all of it. “It’s definitely a gift that I don’t think any of us are prepared for, and I just want to thank you all. I can’t wait to go back.”
We can’t wait to go either! For a complete insider’s preview of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, make sure to check out Disney twenty-three, where we take you deeper inside the land and reveal more about its attractions, food, and immersive experiences, available this May.
After the exhilaration of the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge panel presentation and a few rounds on the Convention Floor going elbow-to-elbow with Greedo and whole lot of Hans, fans were surprised by a Grand Procession that paraded across the entire convention center. It featured dozens of imperial officers and a whole squadron of stormtroopers, led by Captain Phasma, Kylo Ren, and a whole gang of sand people. They were followed by “the good guys,” about 40 or so Rebel fighters (including Mickey Mouse, strangely enough), resistance fighters, then another round of Boba Fetts—Mandalorian Warriors, the Knights of Ren, many Leias, Reys, Poes, and, of course, a Darth Vader (or two). They were taking the “Celebration” part of Star Wars Celebration to heart!
And, speaking of heart, the 4 p.m. panel, called “SISTERS OF THE FORCE, A Celebration of Women and Star Wars,” had enough heart and passion to warm the coldest of Imperial Emperors (who—it seems—may no longer be dead?). Fan-favorite and friend of D23 Ashley Eckstein, the voice of Ahsoka Tano on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and Star Wars Forces of Destiny, moderated a panel that included Vanessa Marshall (voice of Hera in Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars Forces of Destiny), Catherine Taber (voice of Padme in The Clone Wars), Athena Portillo (producer, Star Wars Rebels), and Suzie McGrath, (voice of Tam in Star Wars Resistance), among others.
This panel, although open to everyone, was all about the women of Lucasfilm. In a galaxy with millions of planets, solar systems, and more aliens than we know how to count, it’s good to know that there’s room enough for fans of every gender, creed, background, and belief. To quote wise old Ben Kenobi, there is something that “surrounds us and penetrates us; it binds the galaxy together,”—it’s “the Force” of our love for all things Star Wars (see what we did there? Ha!). This panel celebrated those women, with each participant telling their own personal stories of succeeding in—and many times, because of—the Star Wars universe.
For example, Catherine Taber shared a video clip from The Clone Wars showing her character, Padme, using her ingenuity and cunning to escape from the battle droids who were holding her captive. “She’s not a Jedi, and she’s not a warrior—but she’s a fighter for the truth and the light,” said Taber. “We can get all caught up in our lives, but it’s great to use your fight and your energy and your time for something good. Padme does that all through the saga. She inspires me to do the same.”
Taber then shared a story about Jacob, a young fan she met when he was a young boy around 12, fighting cancer. Jacob said that he admired Padme, especially the way she faced things straight on, always a fighter—it’s something that helped him while he fought cancer. Jacob is now 22 years old, his cancer in full remission, and he’s going to college and studying film. “I hope he’ll someday hire me,” Taber laughed.
Executive Producer Athena Portillo started as an intern at Lucasfilm, where she met Dave Filoni, who asked her to come work on his show The Clone Wars. She didn’t have to think twice! Now, she’s in a position where she can pay it forward and hire the next generation of coordinators and interns. Last year, Portillo was part of The Hollywood Reporter Power 100, recognizing women in the entertainment industry. “The women we have in this industry are fantastic,” she said.
Suzie McGrath, who plays Tam in Star Wars Resistance, told the story of overcoming a severe speech impediment as a child. “I feel so honored to be here and be among such fierce human beings both on the stage and in the audience,” she said. “I am new, and in the spirit of getting to know each other, I want to share my story, which deals with overcoming a speech impediment.” She used to stutter, which caused her great amounts of trepidation and embarrassment, but through the help of a speech therapist and also her own sheer will, she overcame it and went on to be a successful voice actor.
Vanessa Marshall brought the house down. “I loved when Hera [her character in Star Wars Rebels] says to Ezra, ‘We have hope, hope that it will get better…’ and later when she said, ‘If you fight only for your own life, then your life is worth nothing,’ she inspired me to fight for other people,” said Marshall. “Sometimes our chosen family can be stronger than blood. I found my family in my Ghost [the ship] crew, my fellow castmates, and in my fellow Star Wars fans.”
She then told a story about a small girl she met at Star Wars Weekends at Walt Disney World Resort. The little girl called herself Darth Makenna, and she dressed in the most outlandishly funny Darth Vader-inspired get-up. Makenna said that Ashley Eckstein inspired her to be her own person and to enjoy who she is. Marshall stayed close to this precious girl over the years, but then one day noticed that Makenna changed. “The light had gone,” said Marshall. So she contacted Makenna’s mother and found out that the little girl had been bullied in school, resulting in depression. As Marshall fought back tears, she announced to the arena audience that Darth Makenna, now a middle-schooler, was here at the panel. That’s when Marshall brought her out on stage, and the thunderous applause and nearly deafening cheers were enough to encourage the coldest of hearts. Makenna found nothing but love at that moment, and we were encouraged by her story.
“I brought her here because I wanted to surround her with love and light and let her know how much she matters,” said Marshall. “We are Star Wars family, and we are never alone. Bam! Wow, what a panel! Not a dry eye, and that girl—that awesome, precious Darth Makena—will never be the same.
It’s that type of warmth—that type of love—that drives Ashley Eckstein to do what she does, which is to encourage fans to love and support each other. “Star Wars is for everyone,” she proclaimed, to galactic cheers from the audience.
Later that night, Ashley surprised the audience at a special D23 Gold and Gold Family Member-exclusive screening ofStar Wars: Return of the Jedi at Chicago’s AMC River Walk 21! D23 members, clad in their finest Star Wars gear from across the galaxy, assembled for the sixth installment of the Skywalker saga, some seeing it on the big screen for the first time! Eckstein signed posters, which she brought from her “Sisters of the Force” panel, met fans, took photos, and asked Star Wars trivia questions. When introducing Return of the Jedi, Eckstein said that she LOVED D23 before admitting that she also loves the Ewoks. It elicited a lot of applause from like-minded D23 members, as did the film itself. We love you, too, Ashley…. Thanks for reminding us that Star Wars is for all of us. And we all matter. What a perfect ending to a perfect Saturday at Star Wars Celebration.
Friday April 12
Talk about epic! In one of the marquee events for Star Wars Celebration 2019, the Episode IX panel was—quite literally—a galactic gathering for the ages. From director J.J. Abrams, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, and the cast of the upcoming film, to that explosive new teaser trailer (how many “Wows” can we put in one sentence?) and the long-awaited announcement of the title, the Episode IX panel revved up the Star Wars excitement to a crescendo as we head into the countdown to the premiere of the final Skywalker saga film. And to borrow a line from Han Solo as he smuggled Ben Kenobi and Luke Skywalker out of Mos Eisley back in the 1977 original A New Hope: “Strap yourself in!” Because the panel—and that last, sinister laugh of the trailer!—was truly stunning.
Joining Abrams and Kennedy onstage were cast members Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Daisy Ridley (Rey), Oscar Isaac (Poe), John Boyega (Finn), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), newcomer Naomi Ackie (Jannah), and returning from the original trilogy Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian).
First, the title: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. What does that mean? After the events of the previous film, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, this title could mean SO MANY things. But as the lights came up after that epic teaser trailer, the roar of the thousands of fans in the arena (not to mention the collective gasp of fans the world over) signaled that this title is the perfect way to describe the final film in the story of the Skywalker family. We can hear Ben Kenobi now: “It was if a million voices suddenly cried out… ” in excitement! Of course, it didn’t hurt that Ian McDiarmid, who played the evil Emperor in previous films and whose throaty laugh is heard at the end of the teaser (big surprise!), was standing on the stage as the lights came up. As the thunderous applause quieted, he then said in his sinister tone: “Roll it again,” to which the teaser played a second time.
“We’ve passed on all we know,” said the voice of Luke Skywalker as the trailer opened on Daisy Ridley’s Rey, standing in a vast sand plain with her lightsaber. “A thousand generations live in you now.” And so begins the last chapter.
Kennedy credits series creator George Lucas for his inspiration and vision. “To keep this relevant and meaningful to the characters and the people experiencing this story, it has to feel like it’s of its time. We’ve taken to heart everything that inspired George (Lucas),” said Kennedy during the panel. “And I think that what J.J. has brought to this has given it even more depth.”
Responding to moderator Stephen Colbert’s question about where they are in the production of the film, Abrams responded, “At this stage we’ve been in that focused cave of the editing rooms, and working so hard with a small group of people. We’re aware what Star Wars means to so many people outside of those rooms, but to come here and have this kind of warm reception, and to be physically, viscerally reminded of what it means is the most amazing and exciting thing. Like Kathy [Kennedy] said, we cannot wait for you to see our work.”
Legendary actor Billy Dee Williams was thrilled to return to Lando Calrissian, the character he immortalized first in 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back. Showing all that Lando swagger and charm, when asked what it’s like returning to the character, Williams quipped, “He never left me.”
Oscar Isaac, though, reluctantly took the bait when asked, “Who’s the better pilot, Poe or Han Solo?” He threaded that needle deftly, answering, “No one can pilot the Millennium Falcon like Han. However, Poe can literally fly anything.”
After the gathered crowd sang “Happy Birthday” to newly 27-year-old Ridley, she revealed, “The light saber she [Rey] inherited from Luke lives.”
A rapturous applause greeted Tran, and when pressed about her character’s relationship with Finn, she replied, “All I’m going to say is that Finn is a very eligible bachelor—much like John Boyega.”
Warming the hearts of everyone who heard him, C-3PO actor Anthony Daniels—who has now appeared in all nine films of the Skywalker saga—described his alter ego as his best friend. “I would genuinely want a best friend who cared for me as much as Threepio does,” he said.
Echoing those sentiments, Boyega described the journey of Finn this way: “[In this final film] there’s some sort of closure within who he identifies with, who is family, what is love, what is friendship, and that’s what they’re finding in this movie.”
Those definitely sound like qualities worth fighting for—and waiting for! The newly named Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens this Christmas, and promises to be the biggest, best, most explosive ending ever. Or, to quote Han Solo again, as he captained his Millennium over the Death Star to help save Luke: “Woo hoo!”
As the crowd spilled out of the Episode IX panel (or, should we now call it the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker panel?), energized by an incredible trailer and captivating presentations by J.J. Abrams, Kathleen Kennedy, and the cast of the upcoming film, the huge, galactically transformed McCormick Place Convention Center—the largest in North America—welcomed them into the otherworldliness of Star Wars Celebration 2019, the largest gathering of Star Wars fans on the planet! With more space aliens than 15 Mos Eisley Cantinas, and more Jedi than we’ve seen since way before Order 66, Star Wars Celebration is the stuff of dreams—especially if those dreams are laden with full-sized TIE fighters, droid racing, and the largest brigade of Lego stormtrooper minifigures ever to gather in one place.
One of those dream-makers is Neal Scanlan, the Lucasfilm special effects supervisor responsible for many of the droid and creature designs from the Star Wars films. He was the special guest at a panel called “The Creatures, Droids & Aliens of Star Wars,” hosted by Star Wars actor Warwick Davis. Scanlan walked through the process of melding practical and digital effects together to create some of the most beloved characters in the Star Wars films, including Yoda, Chewie, and the six-eyed, poker-playing alien in Solo: A Star Wars Story. He was even joined onstage by none other than BB-8, one of his most favorite creations.
The heart of Celebration is, of course, the main convention floor, jam-packed with merchandise vendors, exclusive collectibles, droid builders, and the Star Wars Show Live! Stage, a showcase where celebrity guests and others associated with the films are interviewed in front of the convention floor guests. For example, just a few moments ago, Oscar Isaac, who plays Poe, and Naomi Ackie, who plays the new character Jannah, thrilled the crowd by answering questions and then firing T-shirts into the crowd with a T-shirt cannon.
Speaking about her first time setting foot on the Episode IX set, Ackie said it was like a giant playground. “It really was, and the first day was a hard day,” she said. To which Isaac chimed in, “I can’t say too much, but she had a difficult thing to do in front of all of us. It was a very precise thing… It was intense and you did it like a pro.”
“Thanks, babe,” she answered back to him. “I did have a little private cry, just in the middle of the day, just to deal with the pressure. But it’s good to cry!” Isaac agreed, pointing out that thousands of fans cried that morning after seeing the new Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker teaser.
On another part of the convention floor, there is the peculiar site of mouse droid races. Yes, mouse droid races. In case you’re not familiar with what a mouse droid is, it’s a small, box-shaped droid that scoots along the floor. You’ll remember that Chewie—while he was hand-cuffed by Han and Luke en route to find Princess Leia in A New Hope—howled at one inside the Death Star, and it went zooming off in fright. Anyway, there’s a sizable circle-8 track in one corner of the convention floor where fans can commandeer a mouse droid, via hand-held remote control devices, and race it against the other six or seven mouse droids. As one might expect, there are plenty of crashes.
One of the most noticeable and foreboding fixtures on the floor, though, are the imposing stone spires—the Black Spires!—which tower over a giant-sized preview center for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. This installation, from Walt Disney Parks & Resorts, allows guests to get an up-close-and-personal look at some of the exciting attractions and merchandise that will be making their debuts later this summer in both California and Florida. Guests are encouraged to get their photos taken in one of the “transport vehicles” that will be used in the Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance attraction, and also check out the helmets, shirts, and collectibles that will be on sale once Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens.
Beyond that, there’s so much more… cosplay, collectibles, and even a tattoo pavilion. Yes, you read that right, a tattoo pavilion, with multiple booths available for the die-hard fans to get Star Wars-themed tattoos. One daring soul showed off his newly etched Rebel insignia (complete with redness around the artwork). A true Star Wars fan, indeed. But he’s not out of place. There are thousands more just like him here, all ready to fulfill their Star Wars dreams. And this is the place to do it.
Since 2008’s Iron Man, we’ve joined Marvel Super Heroes on their epic journeys leading into this month’s Avengers: Endgame. Emotionally, physically, and mentally, our heroes have transformed in the more-than-10 years of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) stories. But that’s not the only ways they’ve changed—many of our favorite heroes have had major costume evolutions as their super missions have taken them to new challenges. We’re taking a look at some of the most iconic costume evolutions in the MCU while we look forward to what costumes designs we’ll see next.
Captain America
Back when Steve Rogers first became Captain America, his suit was designed less for saving the day and more for performing as “The Star-Spangled Man with a Plan.” However, this brightly colored suit got a makeover when Steve combined it with combat gear during his mission to rescue Bucky Barnes. From there, his proper world-saving suit goes through many designs, first by Howard Stark and later by our favorite fanboy, Agent Phil Coulson. Steve’s suits continue their evolution based on need, such as his less colorful and more tactical stealth suit from Captain America: The Winter Soldier or his advanced suit designed by Tony Stark for Avengers: Age of Ultron. Of course, no matter how his suit changes in design, we can always count on him sporting his patriotic red, white, and blue vibranium shield.
Iron Man
We might be here a while if we break down the entire evolution of the Iron Man suit, because Tony Stark is constantly upgrading and changing his famous armor. Starting with the Mark I armor that was built in a cave with a box of scraps, all the way to The Mark L in Avengers: Infinity War that allowed Tony to travel in deep space, we’ve seen this iconic super suit evolve in major ways. Some of our other favorite designs include the Hulkbuster armor (ironically worn by Bruce Banner himself); the “suitcase suit,” aka the Mark V; the Mark VII from The Avengers that forms around Tony via bracelets; and the massive selection of suits in the Iron Legion.
Black Panther
Designed by his super-genius sister Shuri, Black Panther’s armor has become instantly iconic as a go-to cosplay, Halloween costume, and cultural icon. He hasn’t changed up too much about his classic claws and cowl, but his sister did make one key change—making his mask easier to remove with her high-tech Wakandan technology.
Bucky/The Winter Soldier
When he was only known as Sgt. James “Bucky” Barnes, he dressed for combat during World War II. But that classic look underwent a big change in the modern day when Bucky reawakened as The Winter Soldier. He is almost unrecognizable, from his sleek black suit to his long hair to—of course—his high-tech bionic arm. He unwillingly became the ultimate weapon, and was dressed for the part. However, he still maintained a similar look even after he was freed from his brainwashing (although he did add a new accessory in the form of a gun-wielding Rocket Racoon).
War Machine/Iron Patriot
Lieutenant Colonel James Rhodes—or “Rhodey,” as Tony Stark affectionately calls him, first donned the War Machine suit in Iron Man II. However, the silver and black variation on the Iron Man suit was under the control of Justin Hammer, who had nefarious motives. In Iron Man III, Rhodey’s suit gets a redesign and rebrand as the star-spangled Iron Patriot. However, as of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Rhodey has returned to the classic War Machine suit and is still rocking the silver and black in the latest trailers for Avengers: Endgame.
The Wasp
Hope van Dyne inherited the mantle of The Wasp from her mother, and over the years the iconic Wasp costume received not just a redesign, but a color update, as well! Currently, Hope rocks a yellow and silver look, while her mother’s costume was a classic red to match the Ant-Man suit. Either way, we say that this costume is seriously some high-flying fashion!
Captain Marvel
Green and black: colors of the Kree Star Force, representing the past that Carol Danvers can’t remember. We won’t spoil the events of Captain Marvel for you yet (but hurry up and go see the movie, already! Avengers: Endgame comes out this month!), but if you’ve seen the trailers for Avengers: Endgame, you know that now Carol has swapped her Kree Colors for something new, namely her iconic red, yellow, and blue! Comics fans recognize this as her classic costume, and we can’t wait to see her rock it alongside the rest of the team later this month!
Thor
As the God of Thunder, Thor’s armor has stayed fairly consistent throughout his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he has undergone two major costume changes. The first was his dramatic haircut during Thor: Ragnarok. No longer does he rock the long flowing locks we’d come to know him for, instead opting for a shorter style perfect for a warrior on Sakaar. Along with his haircut, Thor’s also swapped out an iconic accessory. Well, the change wasn’t entirely his choice—Hela destroyed Mjolnir, so Thor now wields the giant-forged Stormbreaker, which also holds the special distinction of having a handle donated by Groot himself!
Groot
A tree of few words and even fewer accessories, Groot doesn’t have a costume evolution so much as a physical evolution—from towering tree to baby sprout, finally becoming a rebellious teenager just in time to take on Thanos. No matter if he’s just a sapling or if he’s towering above the rest, we love all the ways we’ve seen this guardian grow throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Black Widow
Her trusty, black suit has gotten her through the action since Iron Man 2—but as an expert spy, sometimes Natasha has to change up her look a little. Fans noticed right away in the promotional art for Avengers: Infinity War that Natasha was perhaps testing out a platinum blonde hairstyle, and soon discovered that she was actually going undercover after the events of Captain America: Civil War. It looks like her undercover days might be done, if the new trailers for Avengers: Endgame are any indication, as her blonde dye job has grown out to her redheaded roots. Why the hairstyle switch-up? We’ll have to watch the movie to find out!
Over the weekend, the cast of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame assembled at a press conference to promote the epic continuation of Avengers: Infinity War in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)—and D23 had a front row seat for all the action! Appearing onstage with producer Kevin Feige and directors Anthony and Joe Russo, actors Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Don Cheadle, Jeremy Renner, Brie Larson, Paul Rudd, Danai Gurira and Karen Gillan fielded questions about the highly anticipated blockbuster (in theaters April 26). Jon Favreau—who directed Iron Man and Iron Man 2, and also reprises his role as Happy Hogan in Avengers: Endgame—moderated the Q&A at the InterContinental Los Angeles.
Surrounded by empty chairs representing their fallen Avengers, the cast and filmmakers managed to avoid sharing any spoilers while answering the questions. Here’s what we learned:
1. Iron Man flew so the Avengers could soar.
In his wildest dreams, Feige never imagined a movie like Iron Man would become so popular—not to mention profitable. “We hired a great director to do the first film in the MCU,” he said, winking at Favreau, “and then we hired a great actor.” The production was a gamble, he said, and the bar for success was pretty low. (“It felt high at the time,” he noted.) But once cameras began rolling, Feige had a funny feeling they had a hit on their hands. “As we were making the movie, and as we were looking at dailies, and as we were looking at effects tests coming in, we realized this was going to be special—perhaps more special than we’d thought.”
2. Even Super Heroes have their insecurities.
Just like Tony Stark, the self-described “genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist” who laid the groundwork for future heroes, Downey’s bravado masked his anxiety. “There’s always two tracks, at least in my mind. One is, ‘The sky is falling.’ The other is, ‘The sky is the limit,’” he said. Downey saw endless storytelling potential, and he hoped fans would, too. “I’m reminded now that I was talking a lot of smack, saying, ‘Wait ’til you see where this goes,’” he said. “But in the moment, I was just hoping… we were getting good stuff. I just wanted to not drop the ball.”
3. After every ending, there is a new beginning. The Russo brothers hit fans with a gut-punching climax in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, with Thanos (Josh Brolin) using the Infinity Gauntlet to decimate half the universe in a single snap, killing fan-favorites like Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Spider-Man (Tom Holland), Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). It put the surviving heroes in a unique and unfamiliar position going into Avengers: Endgame, as they’d previously won nearly every battle and suffered minimal casualties to them or their allies, save for Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) and Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), the former of whom was resurrected on the ABC series Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. “One of our favorite storytelling adages is, ‘Write yourself into a corner.’ What we take that to mean is: Put yourself in a place at a narrative level where you have no idea how you could possibly move forward from here,” Anthony explained. “That’s a very exciting place to be, and it forces you to come up with some really creative ways forward. We’ve tried to do that with the endings of every single Marvel movie we’ve done—never more so, of course, than Infinity War. We are very committed to the end of that movie.”
“We think stories lose their meaning, and relevancy and resonance unless there are real stakes,” Anthony added. “Moving into this new movie, into Endgame, the story is very much about, ‘How do these heroes deal with loss—resounding loss, true loss, devastating loss?’ That’s what they experienced in Infinity War, and that was a unique experience for all of them.”
4. Captain America doesn’t need to shield everyone anymore.
Even before he became a super soldier in the 1940s, Captain America was a natural-born leader. His sensible style often clashed with Iron Man’s audacious approach, but he never lost the team’s trust. Now, as new heroes emerge, the burden of leadership no longer rests squarely on his shoulders. “I think he tends to lean on those people who are of like mind and nature, who are intrinsically selfless,” Evans said. “All the heroes up here have their baked in the cake flaws, and I think a lot of that makes for really good conflict and storytelling. That’s why my favorite stuff in this arc has been my stuff with Downey, because it’s such a dichotomy between how we approach things—and, at the end of the day, our hearts are both in the right places. That provides a lot of great friction. Introducing characters like Captain Marvel, like Black Panther, who align very similarly to Cap’s nature, I think it reinforces Cap’s sense of purpose and home.”
5. Ant-Man has a big—and little—job to do in Avengers: Endgame.
Ant-Man (Rudd) was M.I.A. in Avengers: Infinity War, but he’ll rejoin the surviving heroes in their quest to right Thanos’ wrongs. Beyond that, he can’t say much. “I did see the trailer, so I do know that I’m in it. How I fit in, how any of this works, it remains to be seen. It’s going to be fun to have audiences discover it along with us,” the actor teased. “We haven’t seen it, either.”
Rudd joined the MCU with 2015’s Ant-Man, seven years after Downey’s Tony Stark announced to the world, “I am Iron Man.” Reprising his role in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War alongside such a stacked cast of characters was mind-blowing, according to Rudd. “It’s a weird thing to be hired and then, for somebody like me, to step into it as it’s already picked up speed,” he said. “It’s like having the Beatles say, ‘Come on and jam with us for a while.’ It’s an unreal sensation.”
Going into Avengers: Endgame, the significance of the film series wasn’t lost on Rudd. “Getting to work with all of these actors in this series of films is a one-off. It will never happen again—not for me,” he said. “I keep taking steps back and trying to recognize this for what it is. It is so surreal, profound and incredible to be a part of it. It’s amazing to meet so many people who are so passionate about it. It’s incredible to meet so many kids whose lives are affected by these characters, and to play a small part in that—pun intended—is something I will always treasure.”
6. Brie Larson got a crash course in how the MCU operates.
Like Rudd, Larson said she joined the franchise at “the most magical time.” Although audiences first witnessed her character fly higher, further, faster in 2019’s Captain Marvel, it wasn’t the first time she suited up in the MCU. “This film will always be personally dear to me, because it was my first time playing Captain Marvel; we shot this first,” she said. “So, I had to stumble and try to figure out who this character was… and perform—for the first time—in front of legends.”
7. The Russo brothers see Avengers: Endgame as an experiment.
The fate of the heroes won’t be clear until Avengers: Endgame hits theaters. But one thing is already apparent: It won’t end on a cliffhanger. “With Endgame, we get the opportunity to finish one of the grandest experiments in movie history and bring it, as Kevin said, to an epic conclusion,” Joe said. “What we’re hoping for is that people feel satisfied with the conclusion.”
8. Women redefined the MCU—especially in Phase Three.
Johansson, who debuted as Black Widow in 2010’s Iron Man 2, appreciated how audiences “really pushed” Marvel Studios to pay attention to “what’s going on in the zeitgeist” by putting diverse stories front and center—particularly as it added more women to the Avengers ensemble. “I remember when [Elizabeth Olsen] signed on and [Cobie Smulders] was there, we were all clinging to each other,” Johansson said. “I felt like I’d been in this testosterone fest for such a long time! It was nice to see other female cast members. And then with Brie coming on, and Karen, and Danai, I feel like I’m amongst so many wonderful actors, so many strong actors.”
Reflecting on her nine years and seven films in the MCU, she added, “It’s grown beyond my wildest dreams. I could never have imagined where this would take us. It’s been quite a journey.”
9. No longer daddy’s girl, Nebula is out for blood.
Nebula (Gillan), last seen on the planet Titan with Iron Man in Avengers: Infinity War, has an axe to grind. “I think it’s maybe safe to say she suffers from some daddy issues—because Thanos is her dad, so who wouldn’t?” the actress said with a laugh. “I’m excited for her to finally face the source of this abuse. This has been building through multiple Guardians movies, and she’s talked about how she wants to inflict revenge. I would like to see her try to face that.”
10. Mark Ruffalo can’t imagine life without his fellow Avengers.
Ruffalo, who first appeared as Hulk in 2012’s The Avengers, will miss seeing his co-stars on a regular basis. “It doesn’t feel like family to me because we all really get along. There’s not that much drama,” the actor quipped, adding, “No, it does feel like family—it’s a family that you wish you had, in a way.” Noting the “bittersweet” mood in the room, he told Favreau, “We’re all talking about it like we’re dead: ‘Oh, I loved working with these guys. It was great knowing them…’”
“As actors, we’re like vagabonds,” Ruffalo continued. “We kind of bounce around. We have these intense relationships, and then you don’t see anybody until you get nominated in something and you end up at an award ceremony.” Without missing a beat, a self-deprecating Evans piped in and joked, “What’s that like? Speak for yourself,” prompting the others to laugh.
11. Expect the unexpected in Avengers: Endgame. In the lead-up to Avengers: Endgame, the Russo brothers have shown amazing restraint in terms of what they have and haven’t shown fans. Rest assured, it’ll all be worth it when the movie arrives in theaters. “We grew up loving the comics. We came to the MCU already fans of the MCU. So, the energy we move on is our own passion and our own stories,” Anthony said. “We learned long ago that you have to tell stories for yourself. You can’t be thinking about how others might receive them. For Joe and me, because we have such an intimate relationship with the material, because we have so many amazing collaborators—starting with Kevin—we are able to just really fashion the story around what we want to see as fans. How do we surprise ourselves? How do we excite ourselves? How do we challenge ourselves? How do we force ourselves to keep digging deeper and keep exploring this narrative and these characters in ways we never imagined? That’s how we guide ourselves through the process. And once the film is complete and we put it out into the world, we really have no idea how it’s going to be received.”
