Miniatures

Miniatures One of Walt Disney’s hobbies was the collecting of miniatures, and this hobby actually helped bring about Disneyland. For years Walt had been collecting tiny furniture and household items and displaying them in little room settings. Out of this collection came an idea for a miniature Americana display with dioramas that would travel the country by truck and teach people about how life in the United States developed to the present. His first completed model was Granny’s Cabin, which he exhibited at a Festival of California Living at the Pan Pacific Auditorium in Los Angeles in 1952. Because of the obvious problem of not being able to show dioramas to large numbers of people, Disney put aside his idea of a miniature display and expanded his sights to what eventually became Disneyland.
