Life Is Ruff (television) A Disney Channel Original Movie; debuting on July 15, 2005. Calvin Wheeler, a popular yet unmotivated 13-year-old, has a passion for rare comic books and desires to buy a rare, $3,000 first edition. When he learns of a prestigious dog show with a $5,000 first prize, he enters it. His friend Emily, who volunteers at the local animal shelter, helps him adopt Tyco, a slobbering, lovable stray Labrador retriever/Saint Bernard mix. Tyco wreaks havoc at home, but Calvin cleans up after the playful pup and tries to teach him some new tricks so he can win Best in Show. After enduring various trials and tribulations, Calvin learns to appreciate the values of true friendship, responsibility, and hard work. Directed by Charles Haid.
