Columbia Sailing Ship Frontierland attraction at Disneyland; opened on June 14, 1958. The belowdecks exhibit, featuring re-created quarters of eighteenth-century American seamen, was opened on February 22, 1964. The original Columbia was the first ship to circumnavigate the globe in 1787, with the Columbia River in Oregon named after it when it explored the mouth of the river. Disney designers studied historical records to make their replica as accurate as possible. It only operates for guests on very busy days, but it has recently found additional use by taking on the guise of a pirate ship as a part of Fantasmic!
