Independence Lake In the 1970s, after the loss of the Mineral King project, Disney proposed another ski resort in the Sierra Nevada Mountains near Truckee, California. The land around the lake was jointly owned by the Southern Pacific Railroad and the U.S. government. Disney tried to arrange a land swap to put together a workable parcel of land, but nothing came of the project and Disney gave up thoughts of a ski resort.
