EXCLUSIVE: Inside the Mind of Artist Nikkolas Smith and His Super New Target Collection

By the D23 Team

Nikkolas Smith has swung across the worlds of Marvel like Spider-Man swings across buildings… You’ve seen his handywork everywhere: Avenger’s Campus at Disney California Adventure Park; products inspired by Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever; even artwork at Shanghai Disneyland!

Now, Smith is starting a new Marvel adventure with the help of Target, taking his artwork off the canvas and onto a cool clothing collection that Marvel fans of all ages will love. The Nikkolas Smith: Marvel Artist Collection is now available exclusively at the retailer—and as you admire his designs, you may wonder how he finds his creative inspiration, or how he developed his style. D23 is here to save the day! We sat down with Smith to talk all things art and Marvel… and about what is means to be an “ARTivist” inspiring change in the world.

D23: The Official Disney Fan Club: How did the collection with Target come about?
Nikkolas Smith (NS): At the end of 2021, I received an email with an invitation to reimagine a few of my favorite Marvel Super Heroes for a collection with a major retailer. I still didn’t know who the retailer would be, and over the next couple of weeks I created illustrations with my spin on Marvel’s Black Panther, Storm, and Miles Morales. From there, the artwork was developed into a clothing line for men, women, and children; Funko POP! collectibles; blankets; and even puzzles. Target has been a dream come true for me to collaborate with. Seeing the fully stocked Marvel Artist Series displays in Target stores with my face on them—featuring dozens of different pieces of merchandise that I helped bring to life—and seeing kids wearing my illustrations, it’s an incredible feeling!

Nikkolas Smith, with an excited expression, holds up a red t-shirt with his art of Marvel’s Black Panther on it.

D23: What inspires your distinct artistic style?
NS: Humanity itself is a beautiful, messy collage of unfinished stories, and that in itself is a big source of inspiration for my painterly, sketchy, semi-abstract, often unfinished art style. There are rarely any straight, clean lines. The same is true in nature, and metaphorically in our lives as well.

D23: You have been described as an “ARTivist”—can you expand on what that means to you?
NS: As an “ARTivist,” I want to make art that is not only visually appealing and stops people in their tracks, but also takes it a step forward. “ARTivism” can call out the broken bones of the world: things like injustice, war, global warming, racism, and so much more. It can open people’s eyes to an important issue they may not have known about and inspire them to make positive change related to that issue. I truly believe that everyone is creative, and that we all have the ability to create art that is meaningful and world-changing.

D23: You’ve worked on some notable films such as Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Can you tell us a little about that experience?
NS: Being a concept illustrator on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was a dream come true. I worked on Hannah Beachler’s team, creating concept art for various interior and exterior scenes in the film, while also envisioning how certain characters would be interacting in those environments. It was an unforgettable learning experience.

D23: What’s your favorite Disney memory?
NS: There are so many, but a really monumental one was during my fourth year of architecture school at Hampton University—being flown to California to present my ImagiNations project to Walt Disney Imagineers, who would one day become my coworkers.

D23: How did you get started as an Imagineer?
NS: While in my Master of Architecture program at Hampton University, I entered the ImagiNations competition and had the opportunity to present designs to Imagineers in 2007. Thanks to that program, I won a six-month internship after graduating—and that turned into an 11-year career designing theme parks all over the world.

D23: What else can you tell us about your time as an Imagineer? Do you have a favorite project you worked on?
NS: My years as an Imagineer were spent as an architect—3D modeling and creating construction documents for various buildings, castles, and attractions. I worked on Disney Parks all over, from New Fantasyland in Orlando, to Shanghai Disneyland, to Avengers Campus at Disneyland Resort. I don’t know if I can pick a favorite—but traveling to Shanghai to help design Adventure Isle was definitely a memory of a lifetime!

D23: Which Marvel character is your favorite artistic subject?
NS: I would have to say Spider-Man! More specifically, Miles Morales. I love to illustrate the “Spidey-eyes” and find interesting ways to visualize his Spidey senses. For the painterly Artist Series piece, I created for Miles, his Spidey sense takes the form of the curls of his hair, shooting out in their own unique ways.

7 Things to Know About Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania

By Zach Johnson

Kicking off Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the fast-paced, high-stakes adventure Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania features all the heart and humor of the previous films, while taking audiences to a secret universe—a place located outside time and space. Before it opens in theaters Friday, February 17, D23: The Official Disney Fan Club joined stars Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man), Evangeline Lilly (Hope Van Dyne/ Wasp), Jonathan Majors (Kang the Conqueror), Kathryn Newton (Cassie Lang), Michelle Pfeiffer (Janet Van Dyne/ Wasp), and Michael Douglas (Dr. Hank Pym), as well as director Peyton Reed and producers Kevin Feige and Stephen Broussard, at a virtual press conference for a macro and micro look at Marvel Studios’ newest movie.

Before you see the film, D23 presents seven things you need to know...

1. Family is the throughline of all three Ant-Man films.
“It is a generational story about a family of heroes, and Scott Lang—who is not a billionaire or super scientist—getting sucked into this world, and Hope Van Dyne, who is the legacy daughter of two Super Heroes,” Reed explained. And although Scott “wants to be a hero,” Reed said, “work-life balance” is important to him; he wants to bond with his daughter. “In Quantumania, one of the things we’ve done is broaden that story and start talking about the secrets the family members keep from each other, the things they don’t tell each other,” he said. “At the beginning of the movie, very quickly we find out that maybe Janet hasn’t told the family about her 30 years in the Quantum Realm; maybe Hope and Hank haven’t told Scott about what they’re working on with Cassie down in the basement; maybe Cassie hasn’t told her dad about time she might’ve spent in jail. So, everyone’s keeping secrets from Scott at the beginning of the movie—and then, suddenly, they’re thrust into the Quantum Realm, and they have to work out these family dynamics while being in this bizarro, whacked-out world.”

In a scene from Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, Dr. Hank Pym (left), Hope vVan Dyne/Wasp (center), and Janet Van Dyne/Wasp (right) walk in a single-file line through the Quantum Realm. They are disguising themselves in earth-tone outfits

2. The Quantum Realm is a place of danger, intrigue, and mystery.
“The first Ant-Man movie was mainly about meeting the characters and the origin story, of course, but at the very end of that movie, we got a taste of [the Quantum Realm],” Feige said. “It is a place that is on the subatomic level where space and time act differently, and that allowed us to time travel, at Scott Lang’s suggestion, in [Avengers: Endgame]. It also allowed us to have this entire manic quantum-ness in this film, where we go to a point where only Janet had ever seen before... There is an entire universe below the surface where we meet all sorts of fun, crazy characters.

3. Scott is still an everyman—even after he helped the Avengers defeat Thanos.
“What I like most about him is that he is a regular guy who still has reservations about all of this,” Rudd said. “I like the fact that he is a part of a group with some pretty impressive people—Super Heroes!—and he’s the first guy to say, ‘What am I doing here? This makes no sense at all.’” Being a dad “is his main focus,” Rudd added. “He always had a love-hate relationship with [being Ant-Man], but now I feel as if he’s accepted it. He’s happy that all of that seems to be in the rearview mirror, and now he gets to have a normal life... but it doesn’t last, obviously, as long he thought it would.”

4. Hope may shrink as The Wasp, but she’s growing rapidly in her everyday life.
Lilly described her character as “a very cold, detached, very isolated woman” in the first film, released in 2015: “She had a lot of broken relationships in her life.” Over the course of three films, she’s played “this incredible arc” in which Hope has “repaired her relationship with her father, reunited with her long-lost mother, fallen madly in love with Scott, and become a stepmom to Cassie. Her life is full of relationships and full of love.” That evolution is evident through the work she’s now doing as leader of the Pym Van Dyne Foundation, which utilizes the revolutionary Pym Particle in new, innovative ways to advance humanitarian efforts. “She’s thriving and taking that love and spreading it around by trying to do right in the world and fix issues that are massive, like global warming and housing crises,” Lilly added. “And she’s doing it with success.”

In a scene from Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, Cassie Lang (left) and Scott Lang/Ant-Man (right) stand and look to their right. Cassie has tucked a gray T-shirt into skinny jeans and accessorized with a belt. Her brown hair is pulled back into a high ponytail. Scott is wearing a black and red suit; his helmet is off. They are in the Quantum Realm, which includes red rocks, a purple sky, and electric lights in the sky.

5. Kathryn has been a fan of the MCU since its very inception.
Newton recalled how seeing Iron Man in theaters 15 years ago inspired her to become part of the Marvel Studios magic. “I really wanted to be part of this, because it made me dream,” she said. “I went with my dad to the theaters, and I wanted to be a Super Hero. I [actually] wanted to be the biggest Marvel Super Hero of all time, so it’s ironic that Cassie Lang grows 40 feet! I’m proof that dreams come true—because mine did!”

6. Janet and Hank have a lot to tell each other.
“After finally being rescued from the Quantum Realm and reuniting with her lovely husband, Hank, and her daughter, Hope, [Janet] is just savoring this time together,” Pfeiffer said. As Reed mentioned, Janet remains “secretive” about the 30 years she spent away from her family. Eventually, Janet is forced to come clean to Hank and Hope—and do it “in a place where she had hoped she would never see again,” Pfeiffer said, adding, “I think there are a lot of surprises for the family—for some more than others. Maybe some choices were questionable, but they’re a very forgiving family.”

7. Kang (and his many variants) are just getting started...
“Who is Kang? I think that is a question we will all be answering for a very long time,” Majors said with a laugh. “I think the quick answer to that is Kang is a time-traveling Super Villain who is also a nexus being, which leads to this idea of variants. There are multiple versions of Kang. They occupy different universes—[aka] multi-verses—and they have different intentions.” As for the Kang who faces the Lang/Van Dyne/Pym family in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania? He’s stuck in the Quantum Realm. “He has some issues with some variants,” Majors added. “And he’s not happy about it.”

Icons of Disney Storytelling: Dan Povenmire

By Zach Johnson

In this special series of intimate interviews, D23.com speaks with the most talented, prolific, and articulate storytellers from across The Walt Disney Company.

Dan Povenmire’s imagination knows no bounds.

In fact, the imitable co-creator and executive producer of Phineas and Ferb recently entered into an overall deal with Disney Branded Television to produce 40 all-new episodes of the beloved animated comedy series. That’s in addition to working on Season 2 of the Disney Channel hit series Hamster & Gretel, which debuted last August and where Povenmire is also the creator and executive producer.

For the past 15 years, Povenmire has made a home for himself at The Walt Disney Company—and, according to him, there’s no place he’d rather be. “There’s this cliche about ‘being part of the magic,’ but there’s something great about being part of the magic,” he says. “The first time I saw the walk-around characters of my characters at Disneyland—that’s a magic memory for me. That makes me tear up when I tell people about it—seeing the Phineas and Ferb’s Rockin’ Rollin’ Dance Party they used to host at Disney California Adventure. Those kind of things were such a part of my childhood. To now be a part of that culture—what Disney is in people’s hearts and minds—is a very cool, ‘pinch me’ kind of thing.”

Winner of five Emmy® Awards, Phineas and Ferb remains the most successful animated series for kids ages 6–11 and tweens ages 9–14 in Disney Television Animation history. It premiered on Disney Channel in January 2008 and became the No. 1 animated television series of 2009 among tweens. Its global success spawned two feature-length films—Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension (2011) and Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Candace Against the Universe (2020)—and by 2012, its popularity skyrocketed with a live touring show and junior novels, with extensions across every consumer products category, from apparel and food to health and toys.

Over the years, Povenmire also co-created and executive produced Disney Channel’s animated series Milo Murphy’s Law, which earned three Emmy Award nominations. His most recent creation, the animated series Hamster & Gretel, was renewed for a second season in January. Povenmire wrote and co-wrote some 500 songs for Phineas and Ferb, Milo Murphy’s Law, and Hamster & Gretel, many of which have become Gen Z favorites and continue to trend on TikTok and other social media platforms where he has built a worldwide fan base, known for also providing the voice of the Phineas and Ferb character Dr. Heinz Doofenschmirtz.

With more than 25 years of experience in directing, storyboarding, and writing, Povenmire has been part of The Walt Disney Family for decades, having worked on multiple critically acclaimed animated series, such as Family Guy and The Simpsons. And, as part of his new overall deal, Povenmire will develop various live-action projects.

Now, Povenmire joins D23: The Official Disney Fan Club for a wide-ranging Q&A…

From left to right, animated Phinas and Ferb characters Baljeet, Isabella, Phineas, Ferb, and Buford ride rocket-powered hoverboards through a city street.

D23: I can’t think of anywhere besides Disney where characters you created for television end up in theme parks, in feature films, etc. How does that make you feel?
Dan Povenmire (DP): It’s spectacular. It’s great to be part of a company like Disney, because when they get behind something, they really get behind it. Having created a show that became a such a huge hit so quickly made our heads spin. Back then, we [Povenmire and Phineas and Ferb co-creator Jeff “Swampy” Marsh] thought, “We’re funny guys. We can make a good show that will get a second season.” But for it to take off the way that it did has been incredible. Even seeing Perry the Platypus dolls in the shops at Disneyland, I’m still amazed. It’s like: “Oh, my God! There’s a whole rack of Perry the Platypus and Phineas and Ferb dolls out there.” So, it’s been really fantastic.

D23: Phineas and Ferb has a devoted and still-growing fanbase. How has being a part of the Disney family helped you to touch the hearts of millions of viewers worldwide?
DP: I always try to put myself in the mind of the viewer. I can have a very sophisticated sense of humor, and I can also have a very childish sense of humor. I’ll often think: “Where is this going to make me laugh? Where is this going to make me tear up?” There are moments, as we were writing songs for the episodes, when I would listen to them over and over again, on my walks or in my car, building in my brain the visuals that would go with those songs. I would get so excited thinking about what it would be like to be a kid watching that moment. I would sometimes hit something that felt of, “Oh, this is such a great moment. Kids are going to get really excited about watching this!” That would always hit me hard, that Disney was allowing me to give kids moments like that. Now, when I watch TikTok or any social media, I see the people who are reproducing Phineas and Ferb songs from first season—there’s so many different versions of “Busted” online—and they’re hilarious! I’ll scroll through them sometimes, and I’ve never gotten to the end of them. This is 15 years later, and people are still singing these songs to themselves and even remember the choreography—choreography I drew in a little office in the Frank G. Wells building on the Studio lot!

D23: How has the legacy of Disney storytelling impacted your own work?
DP: I was always a big fan of Walt Disney, and as I learned more about filmmaking and as I read more about him, he said something along the lines of, “Story is the is the only thing that really matters.” Are you telling a story that will get someone to the end of it? If the story is boring, it doesn’t matter how well you’re telling it visually. You need to tell a story that involves people emotionally—and that’s what I think the real legacy of Walt Disney is. It’s not that we did that in every single episode of Phineas and Ferb; a lot of them are just romps to entertain you on a comedic basis. But we tried to have a heart at the core of our shows. And when we’d do a special episode that really tugs at the heartstrings, I always felt like they really, really worked. When I would screen those episodes for people, we’d always have somebody getting out tissues at the end to wipe their eyes. Those are Walt’s footsteps we’re following. With all of the people who’ve done such amazing work at Disney, it’s a little inspiring to think that—at some point—we just may be remembered with the same reverence that they were.

Animated Phineas and Ferb character Dr. Doofenshmirtz wears a white lab coat and a black shirt. His eyes bug out of his head as he looks upward. In the background, dozens of gray robots with glowing red faces surround Dr. Doofenshmirtz.

D23: How has Disney enabled you to collaborate with other storytellers?
DP: Other than the pilot, which Swampy and I wrote by ourselves, Phineas and Ferb was done very collaboratively. It was great to hire people we thought were funny, whose visual humor we really enjoyed, and then put them in a sandbox with our toys and see how they played. We tried to listen to as many different voices as we could. Disney introduced us to our composer, Danny Jacob. It became this really great collaboration where we knew exactly what we needed to give him musically to tell the story. Suddenly, I could write a song every week, and I didn’t have to go through producing it and playing all the instruments. I just had to play it on guitar using a recording program, then send it to him and say, “We want this to sound like ABBA,” or, “We want this to sound like a Broadway showtune.” And he would do all of that stuff and make it work. All along, we tried to create an environment for everybody on staff to feel as if their creative voice would be heard if they raised their hand and said, “Hey, what about this?” We would listen to their ideas and put them in. I always felt like the more minds in a room, the better. Even our logo was designed by our production coordinator, who happened to have a background in graphic design. Lance LeCompte came in with this logo where their faces appeared in the letters; I designed the characters, and I didn’t even realize that would work! Different people would pitch gags, and if they were funny, I always put them in. I think a lot of the people stayed on for the whole run because they felt like they were really being heard and that their ideas were getting into the show. I was always open to hearing what the best idea was.

D23: How would you summarize your time working within Disney?
DP: We did Phineas and Ferb very differently… We would go from an outline straight to storyboards, and all the dialogue would be written in storyboards, which isn’t something they were terribly familiar with at the time. But we told them, “This is how we think we can build a show that’s as funny as the pilot was, because that’s how we wrote the pilot.” It was great that they took a chance and said, “OK, let’s try that. We haven’t done that before.” They took a couple big leaps for us, and once it started working, they were like, “We’re glad we did that.” Now, after all these years, they have a lot more faith in me and in my decisions, so I don’t have to really push them on anything when I say, “This is how we want to do this.” Now, they’ll tell us, “We’ve never seen that before. Let’s try that!”

D23: How has Disney helped you to realize your dreams—and dream new ones?
DP: It’s great to be at a place that is always looking for new content and new ways of doing things. I was a kid who would write songs, play guitar, draw pictures, tell funny stories, and talk in silly voices with my friends for free—for years and years and years! Disney is the first place where I’ve been able to do all of those things in the same place every day. I don’t know if I can ask for anything better than that. I’m basically doing all the things I’d be doing if I was unemployed, but I’m getting paid for it. It’s a good gig!

Disney100: The Exhibition: Moving Right Along and Headed East!

By Kevin M. Kern, Walt Disney Archives

Final preparations are “moving right along” for the blockbuster anniversary showcase, Disney100: The Exhibition, from the Walt Disney Archives and Semmel Exhibitions. And we’re now one step closer to opening this all-new experience representing a century of Disney magic in the making!

Moving trucks hauling some of The Walt Disney Company’s most precious “crown jewels” recently made their way cross-country from Southern California to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, ahead of the February 18 opening at The Franklin Institute, the show’s initial venue—and a key milestone in the realization and completion of the first leg of this years-in-the-making project.

Walt Disney Archives Exhibitions Preparator Daniel Marquand (left) and Associate Curator Chris Rexroad prepare exhibit crates for their cross-country journey.

“It’s been a lot of detailed logistical work to get to this point, but we’re all thrilled to finally see our treasures hit the road,” notes Matthew Adams, Manager, Exhibitions, for the Walt Disney Archives. “This shipping milestone moves us one step closer to opening, and one step closer to sharing this amazing exhibit—and really the great legacy of Disney—with our fans and the Philadelphia community.”

Even with all this movement, however, there’s still progress to be made ahead. At the time of writing, the curatorial team from the Walt Disney Archives is embarking upon the exhibit’s final load-in, just a couple of short weeks away from welcoming the first guests. As Matthew intimates, “We’re almost ready for the real fun to begin!”

If you’ve ever wondered what might go into preparing and moving a project like this—images of the final warehouse from Raiders of the Lost Ark might come to mind—a few “fun facts” about our final preparations include:

  • Three tractor trailers hauling approximately 250 historical assets left for Philadelphia from the Los Angeles area on Friday, January 27.
  • This amounts to 44 separate exhibit crates setting out on a nearly 2,800-mile cross-country trek—about a 40-hour drive!
  • In total, 16 trucks will eventually move the whole experience from site to site, including production materials, scenic elements, and special-effects apparatus used within the exhibition’s 10 galleries.
  • While on-site installation began for our production partners at The Franklin Institute in mid-January, the Archives started installing historical objects into the galleries on Thursday, February 2, with additional archival and historical partners from across The Walt Disney Company arriving a few days later to help put the finishing touches on what is sure to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Be sure to keep an eye out for additional updates both here and on the Disney100: The Exhibition social media channels (Instagram and Facebook) as the February 18 world premiere draws near. We’re getting ready for you!

Fall in Love with These 10 Disney-Inspired Date Ideas

By Jessica Benda

In a world of grand ballrooms, floating lanterns, and endless diamond skies, Disney’s first dates are often more elaborate than the typical coffee run.

Recreating such sweeping outings can be difficult without a Fairy Godmother, but it’s not impossible! We devised 10 doable itineraries inspired by cherished Disney love stories. These budget-friendly dates are the perfect setting to get to know someone better or deepen an already strong connection. Whether it’s a first date, friend date, or just an evening with someone you love, enjoy an outing inspired by your favorite Disney couples.

The animated Aladdin and Jasmine sit and talk on the edge of a wall, the orange and pink sky behind them. Jasmine wears a brown cloak and wrap, holding a red apple between her hands. Aladdin looks down at her, a red fez atop his black hair.

Try a rooftop restaurant like Jasmine and Aladdin
In Aladdin, some might mark a certain magic carpet ride as Aladdin and Jasmine’s first date, but a romantic rooftop encounter is when sparks first fly. After Jasmine (accidentally) commits theft in the marketplace, Aladdin swoops in to help her outrace the guards. They vault over rooftops and share a sweet moment at Aladdin’s home set against the backdrop of an Agrabah sunset.

We don’t condone stealing, but a sunset stroll is a perfect way to spend the evening. For views that rival riding a magic carpet, next up is finding your local (and legal) rooftop. Aladdin and Jasmine would adore a rooftop restaurant, but if there’s none near you, no problem! Anywhere with a large window and stellar view will do.

The animated Belle and Beast sit side-by-side in large green floral chairs, four books on the table in front of them. Beast looks nervously down at the open book he holds as Belle smiles at him. Beast wears a blue cloak while Belle dons a pink dress, her brown hair pulled back in a pink bow.

Read together like Belle and Beast
Beast gave Belle a library, but she helped him relearn how to read the books within it. In Beauty and the Beast, the couple bonded over their shared love of stories, particularly Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. If books are your love language, bring your special someone to a bookstore. Try picking out a book for each other—either something you think they’d like or a plot that reminded you of them. Then swap! If you’d rather read the same story and talk about it after, try something from our romance reading list.

A shot of Peter and Gamora standing by a railing, a brilliant starry galaxy behind them. Gamora’s back is to the camera, but she looks to her right at Peter. Peter leans sideways against the railing, staring at Gamora with his headphones around his neck.

Listen to music like Peter and Gamora
Peter and Gamora have an unspoken thing, but the music chosen to reflect their feelings speaks volumes. In a romantic Guardians of the Galaxy moment, Peter lends Gamora his headphones so she can listen to Elvin Bishop croon Fooled Around and Fell in Love, and they almost kiss just before she abruptly puts a knife to his throat. Minus the weaponry, it’s a perfect moment to recreate. Music can be paired with any activity, but, for a personal touch, why not create playlists inspired by one another? Then take a scenic drive or walk while grooving to songs made with each other in mind. Be sure to add a Kevin Bacon track, per Peter’s wishes.

In the animated film The Princess and the Frog, Tiana and Naveen dance on the gold balcony of Tiana’s Palace. Tiana wears a green dress, gloves, and a gold tiara, while Naveen wears a white suit with black pants. They grin at each other.

Practice cooking like Tiana and Naveen
If one of you knows how to cook, teach the other just like Tiana taught Naveen in The Princess and the Frog. If neither of you know how to cook, even better. Few things are more fun than two people in a kitchen who don’t know what they’re doing. Find a recipe you’d like to try, divvy up tasks as you practice teamwork, and then enjoy a good meal—or order takeout as a backup plan. If you’re feeling ambitious, try gumbo for dinner and beignets for dessert. Who knows? You might have the makings of a decent mushroom mincer.

In the animated film Tangled, Rapunzel and Eugene dance in the town with blurry onlookers behind them. They face each other hand-in-hand and look into each other’s eyes.

Explore the town like Rapunzel and Eugene
Recreating a boat ride through hundreds of floating lanterns requires some serious Disney magic, but Rapunzel and Eugene’s day in town in Tangled seems just as fun. They spend their time in Corona snacking on local treats, reading books in shops, drawing in chalk, and dancing in the street. Toss out the map and explore somewhere new with your person or keep an open mind while wandering a familiar spot in your area. Embrace Rapunzel’s free spirit by letting spontaneity lead your day, and, if you do end up in a boat, bonus points. (Ariel and Eric can vouch for a day in the city and nighttime boat ride too.)

In the animated film Hercules, Hercules and Pegasus are back-to-back, peeking toward each other. Meg leans up against Hercules, hands clasped together by her face. Hercules wears a tan tunic and blue cape, red hair held up by a headband. Meg wears a purple dress and ponytail. Pegasus has blue eyes and a blue mane.

Stroll through a garden like Meg and Hercules
It was something close to love at first sight for Hercules when he first saw Meg, but it took her a bit longer to feel the same way. Herc and Meg visit a restaurant by the bay, the theater, then stroll through a statue garden under a starry sky. If there are sprawling botanical gardens near you (or just some low-hanging trees), consider a stroll for your next date. You might not be in Ancient Greece, but it’s a perfect way to end up in someone’s arms. Blame it on the weak ankles.

At night, the animated Anna and Kristoff ride together in a sled, a glowing lantern beside them. Kristoff holds the reins and looks down at her, clad in gray winterwear. Anna’s red hair is split into two braids under a pink cap and matching cape.

Hike through the wilderness like Anna and Kristoff
Adventurers should consider following in Anna and Kristoff’s footsteps by trying a hike. In Frozen, the pair started their trek in a freshly lacquered sled, but they continued on foot to the North Mountain after it promptly went over a cliff. If you’re prepared, hiking up a mountain can be a superb bonding experienced, evidenced by Anna and Kristoff’s engagement which followed. As seen in Frozen 2, exploring forests is an excellent alternative (as long as you don’t get lost in the woods).

At night, Mia and Nicholas sit crisscross on the grass facing each other under a tree. Blankets lie over their laps as they have a thumb war, staring into each other’s eyes.

Enjoy a night outdoors like Mia and Nicholas
There’s nothing extravagant here, just exchanging secrets over lakeside thumb wars. In Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, Mia and Nicholas dance in the darkness until they fall asleep in each other’s arms. Bring snacks, blankets, and a small speaker for a perfect evening of getting to know each other better. The lake isn’t mandatory; find any large tree or grassy field to spend a few hours together.

In the animated film Up, Carl and Ellie lie on their backs on a picnic blanket in the grass. Ellie wears a yellow picnic dress and points at a cloud in the sky as she holds Carl’s hand. Carl looks up, matching Ellie in a yellow suit and blue tie. An old camera lies on the blanket, and a basket of bread, two apples, a cheese wheel, and a bottle are assembled on the grass.

Picnic like Carl and Ellie
Pack a blanket and a basket of bread, apples, and cheese for the perfect picnic. In Up, Ellie and Carl loved laying in the sun throughout the decades, relaxing on their favorite grassy hilltop to watch the clouds. They always wore their best clothes, so feel free to wear a spiffy tie or day dress to match the occasion. While smartphone photos get the job done, try a Polaroid camera to create a tangible, sweet keepsake of the day.

Entering the animated dream house dressing room, Barbie looks amazed at the racks of clothes. Ken smiles behind her as he leans against the door frame. Barbie wears her teal jumpsuit and pink belt, while Ken wears a striped button-down and blue bathrobe. A gold “K” is embroidered on the front.

Put on a fashion show like Ken and Barbie
In Toy Story 3, Ken’s idea of a perfect date is modeling outfits for Barbie, and he has the right idea. Sure, it ended with Barbie body-slamming Ken and ruining his beloved glitter tux, but there was surely some bonding during the date’s first half. If you are like Barbie and Ken who love shopping dates, grab your person and head to your local mall. Try picking an outfit from shirts to shoes for each other and see how it turns out. If you see a 1967 Nehru jacket, grab it!
