Behind the Heart of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

By Courtney Potter

When last we caught up with that beloved band of misfits known as the Guardians of the Galaxy (thanks to Disney+’s The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special last November), they’d recently acquired Knowhere from the Collector and were hoping to make it a haven both for themselves and for all manner of alien refugees.

But in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3—debuting in theaters today—that return to a semblance of normalcy is totally upended... Still reeling from the loss of Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) must now rally his team around him to defend the universe and protect one of their own—a mission that, if not completed successfully, could potentially lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.

Once again written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 stars Pratt, Saldaña, Dave Bautista as Drax, Karen Gillan as Nebula, and Pom Klementieff as Mantis—and features Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, and Sean Gunn as Kraglin, as well as new-to-the-franchise Will Poulter as Adam Warlock, Chukwudi Iwuji as The High Evolutionary, and Maria Bakalova, who voices Cosmo.

D23: The Official Disney Fan Club was lucky enough to hear exclusively from several members of the film’s cast—including Klementieff and Gunn, and newcomer Poulter—as well as executive producer Sara Smith about the truly memorable making of the film, and what it was like to “face the music” one final time...

In a still from Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Kraglin (Sean Gunn) is holding an arrow between his hands, with his eyes closed. There is fighting going on behind him. He is bald, aside from his headpiece-mohawk, and he’s wearing a dark red leather jacket and black and red gloves.

“The movie is a little more emotional, in some ways, than the other Guardians movies,” says Sean Gunn, back for his third turn as Kraglin. “I think it’s because there’s that wealth of emotion amongst the characters; we’re building on something that’s already there. And I think as a result of that, the film is richer and deeper in a way that was really satisfying to make.”

He continues, “From my own personal point of view, my character continues to grow—he’s had a pretty wide arc, from the over the span of the first two movies, and that definitely, emphatically, continues in this third movie.”

Those first two films are, in fact, some of Will Poulter’s absolute favorites from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe—so joining this one as Adam Warlock was especially noteworthy for the actor: “Guardians of the Galaxy was something that I’d admired from afar,” he admits. “And I say ‘afar’ because I never in a million years thought that I would be part of one of the films.” At first, he didn’t even realize he was auditioning for this specific project. “There’s so much secrecy around all things Marvel,” Poulter says. “I knew that I was auditioning for something within the Marvel universe; I think it wasn’t until my second taping opportunity that I found out it was Guardians of the Galaxy, and that it was for the character of Adam Warlock. So I didn’t really know in what context or how big the role was.”

He adds, “You don’t want to count your chickens [before they hatch] at any point. It was a really pleasant surprise to be given the role—and a huge honor, in the sense that I think James is an incredibly special creative, on top of being a really nice guy. Having his approval meant a lot.”

In a still from Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, from left to right, Drax (Dave Bautista), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), and Nebula (Karen Gillan) are standing around a table in a kitchen-like space having a discussion.

Filming Vol. 3 was, as you might imagine, especially memorable—both for returning cast members and for those who were just joining the festivities. “It was a long shoot, but it was such a beautiful shoot,” Klementieff tells D23. “What I remember is, each time we were shooting a scene, we thought, ‘Oh, this could be the last time we’re shooting this as a group!’ So it made every scene very special, and very emotional as well. Even if the scene was funny, it was rooted in that feeling like the end of a chapter. So it really was special.”

With Mantis more in the thick of the action than ever before during The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, the actress says to expect further antics in the new film: “I’ve been harassing James—and every director from the Marvel universe!—to get to fight, because I’ve been training for years. So it’s finally happening! Once you open the door, you have to continue doing it, you know? You can’t go back to notfighting,” she adds, laughing. “So yes, in this film, there is more action for sure. It’s really fun.”

Speaking of fun, that was obviously of substantial importance for executive producer Sara Smith—along with all the memorable exploits we’ve come to expect from the Guardians crew. “James’ ability to makes us laugh and cry in equal measure—while taking us on a cosmic journey of epic proportions—is unrivaled,” she explains. “Vol. 3 is the culmination of everything we love about the Guardians: family, adventure, love, loss, and finding one’s place in the universe... The heart and humor that James infuses each character with is so compelling. Completing each of the Guardians’ emotional journey while creating a sense of closure was a big priority.”

In a still from Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Adam Warlock (Will Poulter) (top) and Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki) (bottom) are sitting in golden chairs, in a golden-hued room. Ayesha is turned around, looking at Adam; Adam is staring at something off-camera to the right. They’re both wearing intricate leather costumes.

That kind of sincere yet uproarious journey also excites Poulter: “I think this is, hopefully, going to be the funniest and also the most heartfelt Guardians film yet. That’s coming from the newbie,” he adds, chuckling. “This one seems to be the most emotionally impactful while still being so funny, at least from what I read—and from what I saw on the set floor. I think James really tried, at every moment, to make it as hilarious and as entertaining as possible, but also to have it be this crescendo of sorts.”

He continues, “There’s also going to be some from surprises in there for people, which I think they’re really going to dig. I’m so excited to see the fans’ reaction to it. James thinks about everything in such granular detail and—across every department—people put their all in. There are so many phenomenally talented people, at the top of their game, contributing to this thing, knowing how closely fans hold it to their hearts. I think they just want to kind of do the source material justice and deliver—for what is an incredibly unrivaled fan group, as far as passion is concerned.”

All told, “The whole idea of the Guardians is that you can find family anywhere,” Gunn explains. “It doesn’t matter whatever you’ve been told your family is, or what your family is supposed to be—you don’t have to get family there. As long as you find people who love you and care about you and have your back all the time, that’s your family. So I really think that fundamental principle of, ‘If you feel lost or alone, you’re not; there is family out there for you’—that’s the main thing that I want people to take away from watching the Guardians movies.”

Aush Afghan Noodle Soup
“On a bitterly cold day in Washington D.C., I visited the home of Homayon Karimy, a wonderful Afghan cook, who taught me to make Aush, a soup I had only tasted in other people’s homes. This beautiful noodle soup is topped with a rich meat sauce and a lemony yogurt sauce, meant to replicate the tartness of homemade yogurt in that part of the world. I’ve adapted Karimy’s family recipe and love making this soup in big batches. Don’t be intimidated by its length; while it has many steps, it’s not hard to make and it results in an explosion of flavors and textures. Karimy uses a dried wheat noodle which he cooks right in the soup—a traditional way of preparing this—but I boil the noodles separately because I want to taste the difference in texture between the noodles and the vegetables. It also makes a cozy brunch: hold the meat sauce, and top with a fried egg.”

Butternut Squash
“Traditionally, this Afghan stuffed flatbread is filled with potatoes, but I love the beauty of butternut squash, roasted to concentrate its natural sweetness and flecked with scallions and cilantro. You can really use anything for the filling: it’s a great way to repurpose vegetable curries or leftover Thanksgiving sweet potatoes. You will get the best results if you cook them immediately, so a team effort is best here: have one person rolling out the bolani and another at the stove cooking them. I flip them several times to ensure that the bolani cooks evenly. If you’re in a pinch, do as the wonderful Afghan cook Homayon Karimy sometimes does: skip the dough, and use a tortilla, cooking for less than a minute on both sides, until browned. You can’t seal the edges and the result is crunchier, like a quesadilla.”

00_taste-of-the-nation-050523_1180w-600h

Saag and Grits
“This is your antidote to boring sauteed spinach. I was inspired to create this recipe after visiting Katlin and Mohsin Kazmi, a couple who beautifully fuses the foodways of Appalachia with Mohsin’s Pakistani heritage: the saag and grits they serve at their food truck, The Pakalachian, includes the invasive Appalachian weed called kudzu. My version includes Swiss chard, mustard greens, and baby spinach, each cooked just long enough to lose their rawness. I add a masala that gives the dish both heat and warmth, cream to temper the bitterness of the greens, and amchur (dried mango powder) to add tartness.”

Always use caution when handling sharp objects and hot contents.
Please supervise children who are helping or nearby.

Welcome to the merry month of May! So, what’s there to watch from around the worlds of Disney? Let’s see… Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium launches on Hulu; a new episode of Kiff premieres on Disney Channel and Disney XD; the season finale (for mature audiences only) of The Company You Keep comes to ABC; and so much more!

New Disney Channel Series Pupstruction Premieres June 14

Pupstruction, an imaginative, tune-filled new animated series from Disney Branded Television, is set to premiere Wednesday, June 14—with a simulcast on Disney Channel and Disney Junior at 8 a.m. ET. A first batch of episodes will premiere the same day on Disney+ and on-demand platforms. Check out the trailer, below!

The series follows the adventures of the Pupstruction team—a doggone hardworking construction crew ranging from some of the brawniest breeds to irresistibly cute and playful puppies. Crew leader Phinny is an innovative young corgi who dreams up some of the biggest and wildest ideas to help his town of Petsburg. The other members of Pupstruction are Luna, a comically spontaneous sheepdog; Roxy, a can-do rottweiler; and Tank, a lovable, snack-obsessed mastiff. Although Phinny might be the smallest pup on the crew, he proves that you don’t need big paws to have big ideas. Together, the Pupstruction crew uses mud, sweat, drool, and plenty of heart to build and create!

The series voice cast includes Yonas Kibreab as Phinny, Carson Minniear as Tank, Scarlett Kate Ferguson as Roxy, and newcomer Mica Zeltzer as Luna—as well as Yvette Nicole Brown as Mayor Gilmore, Bobby Moynihan as Bobby Boots, Grey DeLisle as Maya, Kari Wahlgren as Scratch, Eric Bauza as characters Harry, Sniff, and Lloyd, and Alessandra Perez as Bailey. Joining them in recently announced recurring and guest-star roles for Season 1 are Olga Merediz as Grandma Dee, Todrick Hall as Harvey Hare, Gabriel Iglesias as Felipe, and Nate Torrence as Chameleo.

Geared toward kids ages 2-7, each episode features two 11-minute stories with an original song in each episode. The main title theme song, written by series’ songwriter/composer Rob Cantor, will be released on Friday, May 12. The full digital soundtrack, Disney Junior Music: Pupstruction, featuring the theme song plus additional songs from the series, will be released by Walt Disney Records on Wednesday, June 14. Plus, Disney Consumer Products, Games and Publishing is developing product lines inspired by the series featuring apparel, figures, vehicles, role-play products, plush, books, and more!

A production still from Disney’s The Lion King on Broadway, from the number “Circle of Life.” Puppet and human-hybrid representations of animals are seen across the stage, facing upstage and looking up at a set piece denoting Pride Rock. On said set piece, from left to right, Mufasa, Rafiki, and Sarabi are looking up at baby Simba (a puppet), being held in Rafiki’s hands. The stage background is a deep, bright blue.

Disney’s The Lion King Celebrates 10,000th Performance on Broadway This Weekend

Amazing news from our friends at Disney Theatrical Productions: The Lion King will play its 10,000th performance on Broadway this Saturday evening, May 6, 2023.

The show’s unprecedented popularity on Broadway is mirrored around the world: With 27 productions over its 25 years, including runs of 20+ years in Tokyo, London, and Hamburg, and on tour throughout North America, The Lion King has played nearly 60,000 performances worldwide. The Broadway production opened on November 13, 1997, and has played through four New York City mayoral administrations; five presidential administrations; and 11 Olympics!

The Lion King continues to celebrate 25 years on Broadway and—while two other Broadway show have previously reached this milestone—it marks several historic firsts: Never has a show in its 25th year been playing in so many productions around the world simultaneously and placed in the Top 5 grossing Broadway shows this long—nearly 1,300 consecutive weeks and counting. Currently, 115,000 people enjoy the show in eight productions on three continents every week. Additionally, there have been 27 productions over the life of the show, seen by a whopping 112 million people… that’s more than the combined populations of Canada, Greece, Sweden, Holland, Denmark, and Australia!

First Look and Premiere Date for Hulu’s Drag Me to Dinner

Hulu recently shared a fun first look at Drag Me to Dinner—a glamorous, messy, faux competition show that no one takes too seriously…

In each episode, two teams of successful drag queens go head-to-head to throw the most fabulous, awe-inspiring, drag-tastical dinner parties of all time, and be crowned champion by the three judges: Neil Patrick Harris (also an executive producer), Bianca Del Rio, and Haneefah Wood.

Hosted by Murray Hill (HBO’s Somebody, Somewhere), each episode has its own unique theme, as revealed by resident expert, “life of the party,” and executive producer David Burtka. Teams will focus on multiple criteria: Food & Drink, Design & Decor, and Entertainment & Overall Vibe. At the end of each episode, one team will be proclaimed the winner and walk away with the grandest “prize” in the history of television: The Glorious Golden Grater—because one team may be great, but the other is grater!

In an image from an episode of Hulu’s Drag Me to Dinner, from let to right, David Burtka is assisting drag queens Jinkx Monsoon and BenDeLaCreme as they are preparing for their dinner party. The trio is standing at a counter, which is filled with various kitchen items and containers.

Across the 10-episode series, 40 truly stunning (not to mention hilarious and talented) drag queens will be featured: Alaska, Alexis Mateo, BeBe Zahara Benet, BenDeLaCreme, Biqtch Puddin’, Chelsea Piers, Darienne Lake, Detox, Gigi Goode, Ginger Minj, Heidi N Closet, Heklina, Jackie Beat, Jaida Essence Hall, Jasmine Rice LaBeija, Jinkx Monsoon, Kiki Ball-Change, Kim Chi, Latrice Royale, Manila Luzon, Marti Gould Cummings, Mayhem Miller, Meatball, Merrie Cherry, Morgan McMichaels, Mrs. Kasha Davis, Naomi Smalls, Nina West, Peaches Christ, Peachez Iman Cummings, Pixie Aventura, Raja, Rhea Litré, Selma Nilla, Sherry Vine, Symone, Thorgy Thor, Trinity the Tuck, Vanessa Vanjie Mateo, and Willam.

Drag Me to Dinner premieres Wednesday, May 31, exclusively on Hulu.

7 Times Disney Legend Jon Favreau Joined the Worlds of Disney

By Jessica Benda

Beloved live-action film reimaginings, Marvel Super Heroes, a galaxy far, far away—Disney Legend Jon Favreau has explored them all.

After all, he achieved his Disney Legend status for a reason, and with Star Wars Day, aka May the 4th, approaching, we’re looking back at his Disney repertoire. As creator of Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett, Favreau has guided the Disney+ Original series to smashing success as he expands the Star Wars universe. The adventure continues as he and Dave Filoni develop the upcoming series Ahsoka, which follows Anakin Skywalker’s former Padawan Ahsoka Tano.

In celebration of May the 4th, we’ve rounded up a tally of past Disney projects Favreau has contributed to as an actor/director/writer/executive producer. (Seriously, what doesn’t he do?)

In the Marvel Studios’ film Iron Man, Iron Man stands outside in his red and yellow metallic suit. He braces himself in a fighting pose and holds his right arm out, which emits a bright blast from his hand.

Iron Man Trilogy
The Marvel Cinematic Universe started with Tony Stark, a brazen billionaire who becomes the titular Super Hero. If there’s a shepherd of the now sprawling MCU, it might be Favreau, who executive produced Iron Man, Iron Man 2, and Iron Man 3, of which he directed the first two. The 2008 action-adventure paved the way for over 30 more MCU films, which continue to breathe life into comic book creator and Disney Legend Stan Lee’s characters.

Happy Hogan
Along with directing, Favreau played Tony Stark’s friend, bodyguard, and head of security: Harold “Happy” Hogan. For more than a decade, Happy has been a steadfast part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in the Iron Man trilogy, Spider-Man films, and Avengers: Endgame.

In the Avengers: Age of Ultron, the Avengers look ahead. Thor stands front and center, with Captain America and the Hulk to the left. Iron Man, Black Widow, and Hawkeye stand to his right.

The Avengers
The potential for Super Hero crossover became apparent in 2012’s The Avengers, an exhilarating yet humorous kickoff to a seven-year film series. Favreau served as an executive producer for the film and continued in the role through Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. The latter two films triumphed as the highest-grossing Marvel Studios’ offerings—and nearly the highest-grossing films of all time—with the first two installments just behind them.

In the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, small green creature Grogu looks at a part of the ship in awe. The Mandalorian holds him in his hands.

Star Wars
Favreau contributed to more than one legendary franchise. In the world of Star Wars, he guides the hugely successful series Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett. Favreau serves as a showrunner, creator, executive producer, and sometimes director and writer to bring the Disney+ Original series to life.

He spends time in front of the camera as well as behind it. Favreau snagged a seat on Solo: A Star Wars Story as he voiced Rio Durant, a four-armed Ardennian pilot. Rio and his crew crossed paths with a young Han Solo, teaming up to steal precious coaxium. He also played the Mandalorian Paz Vizla in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett and voiced Pre Vizla in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

In the live-action reimagining of The Jungle Book, young boy Mowgli swings from a branch over a ravine in the jungle. The black panther Bagheera watches over him from a log that hangs over the ravine’s edge.

The Jungle Book (2016)
Disney’s lush reimagining of The Jungle Book in 2016 was a sweeping success, helmed by Favreau. As director and producer, Favreau oversaw the story of Mowgli, a boy who was raised by wolves and then pursued by the vicious tiger Shere Khan. Favreau also voiced a pygmy hog who’s friends with Baloo!

In the live-action reimagining of The Lion King, lion cubs Simba and Nala look ahead into the Elephant Graveyard, a desolate stretch of dirt and bones.

The Lion King (2019)
Considering the success of Favreau’s first live-action reimagining, it’s no surprise that he took the wheel once more. This time, he turned to the daunting task of reimagining one of Disney’s most successful animated films: The Lion King. Favreau served as director and producer to bring the Pride Lands to life.

Voice Acting
Besides being a lauded producer, director, and writer, Favreau has done a fair amount of voice acting, including in his own projects as previously noted. He’s had roles in series such as Hercules, The Legend of Tarzan, and Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, as well as parts in films like G-Force.

Meet the Characters of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

By Jessica Benda

A humorous, heartfelt adventure set to a sparkling soundtrack of smile-inducing pop tunes—what else could we expect from the final chapter of Guardians of the Galaxy?

On Friday, May 5, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 concludes a nearly 10-year adventure when it opens in theaters. When Rocket’s past tries to hijack his future, the Guardians band together to save him as they wrestle with their own inner battles.

Most of the story’s characters are already beloved, but there are a few new faces added to the roster for this outing. In the time since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 came out in 2016, our heroes have undergone life-changing—and for one, life-ending—circumstances. Below, catch up with the characters you already know and meet the new ones.

An image of Chris Pratt as Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. He stares ahead with a serious expression as areas of the spaceship he stands in catch fire.

Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt)
As the galaxy’s music master and Kevin Bacon aficionado, Peter Quill is known for his easygoing nature and quick wit. This time around, he’s a bit wearier than when we saw him last. After losing Gamora and then finding her again—or at least a version of her—he wrestles with their new dynamic. As Peter struggles to move on, the Guardians are left vulnerable to attack. Now, he must make up for his mistakes to protect one of his own.

A close-up image of Rocket the raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. He appears glum, and the legs of his fellow Guardians are visible in the dark background.

Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper)
Rocket is the same wise-cracking, cosmic criminal we first met in Guardians of the Galaxy. Now that he’s saved the universe a few times, he’s a little wiser and more comfortable with the team. But Rocket’s past has finally caught up with him, and he must face the trauma of his early life to save more than just the Guardians.

Drax (Dave Bautista)
Drax is as lovable as ever and fiercely loyal to his chosen family, the Guardians. Having saved the universe more times than he can remember, we find him fixing up Knowhere for its community. He still struggles to understand the specifics of language and still loves to partake in superpowered violence. Some things never change.

An image of Zoe Saldaña as the green alien Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. In the halls of a spaceship, she kneels on the ground and looks ahead. Her left arm reaches for a weapon holstered at her hip.

Gamora (Zoe Saldaña)
The version of Gamora loved in the previous Guardians films is gone, tossed off a cliff by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. Now, we learn more about the Gamora from an alternative timeline, who has not had adventures with the Guardians and has no previous relationship with Peter Quill. Since the events of Avengers: Endgame, this Gamora has aligned herself with Stakar and his Ravagers.

Nebula (Karen Gillan)
The once sadistic and still snarky Nebula has settled into her role with the Guardians of the Galaxy. After mending the rift with her sister, Gamora, and finding her place in the world, she’s far from the enemy she was in the first film. Now that the Guardians have bought Knowhere from The Collector, she is dedicated to making it the home she never had.

An image of Chukwudi Iwuji as The High Evolutionary in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. He stares over his shoulder, and while his face appears as a human, the back half of his head is seemingly made of metal.

The High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji)
As the story’s villain, to say The High Evolutionary is a force to be reckoned with is a vast understatement. The character has decades of comic book history, but he’ll make his first film appearance in The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Mantis (Pom Klementieff)
In the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special—spoiler alert!—the real gift was learning that Mantis is Peter’s half-sister! This relationship brings new terrain to navigate, but Mantis’ growth expands far beyond that. After fighting many battles with the Guardians, Mantis has begun to embrace her powers, find her voice, and become confident in her role with the team—all of which will be needed to help protect her family from new dangers.

Will Poulter stands tall as Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The room he stands in glows gold, while Will wears a metallic suit and red cape. His blond hair is combed to one side.

Adam Warlock (Will Poulter)
Teased in prior films, Adam Warlock comes to life for the first time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Designed and created as the ultimate weapon, he’s a powerful adversary for the Guardians.

Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel)
Groot is a vital part of the team, and we’ve watched him regrow throughout the Guardians’ recent adventures, after he sacrificed himself for his friends in the first Guardians movie. Now, he’s at a new stage in his life—think high school senior just about to graduate. He uses his new body to help build Knowhere and protect his family, and he’s locked and loaded with bigger and more advanced skills that come in handy for the Guardians!

An image of Sean Gunn as Kraglin in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Channeling his metallic mohawk, he shuts his eyes and grips the Yaka arrow to concentrate. Around him, people are running through a chaotic marketplace.

Kraglin (Sean Gunn)
We first met the former first mate of the Ravager Yondu in the first Guardians of the Galaxy—and how he’s grown since then! Kraglin fought alongside the Avengers against Thanos, and now as an official member of the Guardians, he must master the Yaka arrow to fulfill his potential.

An image of Cosmo the space dog in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. She sits and looks up eagerly, wearing her white CCCP spacesuit. She has fluffy ears, red fur, and a long snout.

Cosmo, the space dog (voiced by Maria Bakalova)
A new fan favorite, Cosmo was sent into space by the Soviet Union and wound up with the Collector. She made her official debut in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, where she practiced her telekinesis as Rocket coached. Luckily, she’s fetching another round of screentime in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3!
