A Historic Premiere in Walt’s Hometown

By Steven Vagnini

As we celebrate the 60th anniversary of The Great Locomotive Chase, D23 looks back at the film’s “Midwest premiere” in Marceline.

“I’m glad I’m a small town boy, and I’m glad Marceline was my town,” Walt Disney once wrote to the city’s residents. The quaint Missouri community, where young Walter lived from 1906 until 1911, helped shape the dreamer’s visions and interests—from animals and nature to art and trains.

So in 1956, when Walt was invited back to Marceline to dedicate the town’s new Walt Disney Municipal Park and swimming pool, he, of course, accepted. Walt and Lillian, along with Roy and Edna Disney, arrived July 3 for a short trip that also included visits to memorable places where the brothers grew up. As a special gift to the residents, Walt presented the “Midwest premiere” of his Studio’s latest cinematic adventure, The Great Locomotive Chase.

Originally released June 8, the Civil War-era film followed a party of Union spies who stole a train from Confederate troops, instigating a race that could have brought an early end to the War. Walt’s love for trains helped fuel his excitement for the project; he even took steps to obtain authentic locomotives from Paramount Pictures and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum. Notably, the film starred one of Disney’s most famous actors, Fess Parker, who starred in three of the Studio’s four features released that year.

The Great Locomotive Chase screened continuously at Marceline’s Uptown Theatre on July 4, much to the joy of the community. At 2:30 p.m., Walt appeared on stage, speaking briefly about his memories of Marceline with a special message to the children in the audience.

New Star Wars Prop Replicas You Have to See to Believe!

If you want to feel—even for one brief, shining moment—like you truly live in the Star Wars universe, look no further than the most authentic line of Star Wars prop replicas ever created. Just last week, Disney and Lucasfilm launched Star Wars Collectibles: Ultimate Studio Edition. Made to order by propmakers at Propshop in Pinewood Studios in London, the line will bring an unprecedented level of authenticity to prop replica products for fans. Each prop will be created using digital data collected during the filming of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and the production process marries cutting-edge 3-D printing technology with master craftsmanship to produce replicas virtually identical to those seen on screen!

The initial offering from the Star Wars Collectibles line features eight prop replicas from Star Wars: The Force Awakens—including Darth Vader’s melted helmet, Rey’s lightsaber hilt, the FN-2187 Stormtrooper helmet, and more. Each item is a limited-production piece (due to the high level of craftsmanship required) and will come with custom display pedestals, all packed in cool wooden crates inspired by the real crates that ship the on-screen props.

ABC’s The $100,000 Pyramid Gets a Cavalcade of Stars This Summer

The hilarious, long-running game show The $100,000 Pyramid is back, and it’s now in prime time. Originally hosted by the legendary Dick Clark, the game centered on two contestants—each paired with a celebrity—as they attempted to guess a series of words or phrases based on descriptions given to them by their teammates…

Now helmed by Good Morning America co-host Michael Strahan, The $100,000 Pyramid returns to ABC with more star-power than ever before! Look for priceless competitor combinations like Saturday Night Live alum Ana Gasteyer versus her former SNL cohort Rachel Dratch; rapper Snoop Dogg versus Martha Stewart; Scandal co-star Bellamy Young versus Grammy® winner “Weird Al” Yankovic; comedian Jon Lovitz versus football/baseball legend Deion Sanders; and The View contributor Sherri Shepherd versus black-ish star Anthony Anderson.

The $100,000 Pyramid is part of ABC’s “Sunday Fun & Games” summer programming block—along with the return of Celebrity Family Feud (featuring Steve Harvey) and the debut of Match Game (a reboot of the ’70s classic game show, now hosted by Alec Baldwin). The fun begins on Sunday, June 26!

A Look at Frozen—Live at the Hyperion’s Enchanting Attire

Disney California Adventure’s newest production, Frozen—Live at the Hyperion, is now open… and it’s bringing a magical chill to audiences several times a day. Our friends at the Disney Parks Blog have been documenting the process of bringing Frozen to the Hyperion Theater stage over these last few months—and their newest video details what went into creating the production’s exquisite costumes. Clint Ramos, the award-winning costume designer behind recent Broadway hits like Eclipsed (starring Lupita Nyong’o) and The Elephant Man (with Bradley Cooper), worked closely with the costumers at the Disneyland Resort to bring more than 1,000 costumes to life! And it was truly a global affair; some pieces were built here in Southern California, while others were created in New York, and fabric and trim were sourced from all over the world.

Follow along as Clint holds one of his final costume fittings with Frozen—Live at the Hyperion performers in the video, above.

Find Dory in New Games and Apps from Disney Interactive Media

We’re tantalizingly close to the debut of Disney•Pixar’s Finding Dory—and to celebrate, Disney Interactive Media is preparing a slew of mobile offerings inspired by Dory, Marlin, Nemo, and their oceanic pals.

Find the app at the Apple App Store, the Google Play store, and Microsoft for Windows 10… and look for its Android and Apple TV release later this month.

Additionally, several other Disney mobile apps and games will soon feature new Dory-related content, including Disney Story Central, Disney Jigsaw Puzzles!, and Disney Color and Play. And a brand-new mobile game, Dory’s Reef, is on the horizon!

Finding Dory takes the wild East Australian Current into theaters on Friday, June 17.

D23’s Ultimate Countdown to Shanghai Disney Resort: Mickey Avenue

By Tyler Slater

“I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing—that it was all started by a mouse.” — Walt Disney

Located just inside the gates of Shanghai Disneyland is the cheerful hometown of Mickey Avenue—a whimsical neighborhood filled with lively shops and restaurants. This beautifully detailed area is the first main entry at a Disney theme park that is home to Mickey Mouse and his pals, including Minnie Mouse, Donald and Daisy Duck, Goofy, and Pluto. D23’s Ultimate Countdown to Shanghai Disney Resort continues this grand-circle tour of Shanghai Disneyland with an in-depth look into this cheerful land that welcomes guests to the lands of adventure, fantasy, and tomorrow.

Four neighborhoods make up the marvelous world of Mickey Avenue: Celebration Square is the friendly heart of the community, Park Place lies just beyond the square (near the Gardens of Imagination), the Market District is on the outskirts of the avenue, and across from the Theatre District, an artsy enclave. Each one invites visitors to experience the optimism of Disney magic and shares the opportunity to grab a hug and snap a photo with some all-time favorite characters.

The biggest business in town—and the largest shop in Shanghai Disneyland—is Avenue M Arcade. Here, guests can explore an old-fashioned store selling all kinds of keepsakes and souvenirs. Fans should keep a sharp eye out while looking at the shop’s facade, as the design specially honors its most famous residents, who are represented as universal virtues on mosaic panels: Mickey Mouse (hospitality), Minnie Mouse with Figaro (compassion), Goofy (optimism), Donald Duck (worldiness), Daisy Duck (friendliness), Pluto and Fifi (generosity), and Chip ’n’ Dale (friendship). Once guests have perused the amazing selection of Shanghai Disney Resort merchandise, including pins, apparel, home décor, collectibles, and so much more, they can head for the trustworthy checkout area—modeled after the nearby First Bank of Scrooge!

780x463-060616_guide-to-shanghai-mickey-ave_1

Just a sweet smell away is the cheerful childhood home of Minnie MouseSweethearts Confectionery! Created in a Queen Anne-style, the house is a candy store that celebrates Disney’s first couple, Mickey and Minnie. Inside the confectionery, treat aficionados will find murals and sweet scenes that tell the story of this couple’s courtship. In Disney parks tradition, fans can watch delectable desserts made in real-time inside the candy kitchen and take home handmade treats inspired by beloved Disney characters.

When it’s time for a bite to eat at Mickey Avenue, the toons have come together to create an open-air market that features four exhibition kitchens at Mickey & Pals Market Café! Family and friends can choose a table at Mickey’s Galley, Tony’s (from Lady and the Tramp), Daisy’s Café, and The Three Caballeros, each offering it’s own unique style of fare. While enjoying a blend of Chinese and Western foods including stews, dim sum, noodles, and meaty entrees, be sure to gaze upon the beautiful mural that celebrates the agricultural heritage of Mickey Avenue through scenes of Mickey and his pals planting and harvesting.

In a French-inspired bakery not too far away, Rémy from Disney•Pixar’s Ratatouille, is preparing something special in the kitchen. Rémy’s Patisserie offers a variety of breads, pastries, and muffins, along with fresh desserts from the restaurant. Disney details like wooden shutters, flower boxes, sidewalk seating, and French café-inspired graphics distinguish the shop’s exterior. Fans are sure to spot tiny scaffolds and ladders built to make sure Rémy can move around the bakery!

It’s a fan-favorite tradition at a Disney park to enjoy a delicious ice cream sundae and in Shanghai Disneyland, this indulgence is brought to you by Donald Duck! Guests can cool off with soft-serve ice cream in a waffle cone or sundae at Il Paparino. If a member of your group is in the mood for something warm, kids of all ages can sink their teeth into fresh-made waffles shaped like popular Disney characters!

Before adventurers depart Mickey Avenue, everyone should pay a visit to Whistle Stop Shop. As the last stop in town, this is the perfect place to discover a storied assortment of toys and keepsakes. Also, it’s the only location in all of Shanghai Disneyland where you can find Mickey Mouse ear hats featuring your name embroidered in English or Chinese—available for the very first time in any Disney theme park! This depot-turned-store at the old Mickey Avenue Train Station even includes occasional visits with the one-and-only Duffy, the Disney Bear.

The grand opening of Shanghai Disney Resort is next week! Before concluding D23’s Ultimate Countdown, we’ll take you on a tour of Disneytown—an exciting shopping, dining, and entertainment destination open to the general public.

5 Reasons to Stay Up Late at Disney’s Animal Kingdom This Summer

By Beth Deitchman

“Night in a place of nature is just different.”

These were the words of Walt Disney Imagineering Portfolio Creative Executive Joe Rohde at Walt Disney World Resort’s recent “Awaken Summer” preview event. He continued, “It is meant to be dark. It is meant to be night. There are pools of darkness as much as there are pools of light. There are areas of quiet as much as there are areas of sound. And there’s the constant knowledge that out there around you are animals.

“Night is awake,” he added. “And things come to life.”

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is coming to life in a most spectacular new way this summer, with the park debuting day-into-nighttime experiences that present guests with awe-inspiring offerings they’ve never seen before in a Disney park—along with more time in their day to enjoy them! Previously a daytime-only park, Disney’s Animal Kingdom is staying open through the evening. The park’s animals are staying up later—and you should, too, when you visit! Here are our five favorite ways to while away an evening at this truly unique Disney park:

Tree of Life

1. The Tree of Life Awakening

As the iconic centerpiece of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, it’s only natural—pun intended!—that the Tree of Life’s dramatic awakening would be one of the most memorable nighttime experiences you’ll find in a Disney park. Walt Disney Imagineering’s Michael Young told D23, “We really looked at the tree as a living creature with these stories and this magic within it that no one got to see during the day, but at night they come out.”

Some of the magic is subtle. You might find yourself walking past the tree and notice something move… You might wonder if you heard a sound you hadn’t noticed before. But then, magically throughout the evening, fireflies appear and a transformation begins. The fireflies bring to life the stories of the animals that are part of the tree, in the carvings, and you’ll wonder if your eyes are playing tricks on you as the stunning visual extravaganza takes place. There are several three-minute-long revelations to be seen: A graceful doe embarks on a thrilling cross-country journey. Love blossoms between two hummingbirds. A spry fox spreads gifts of love among the denizens of a wintry forest. Each vignette celebrates the eternal balance and harmony that exists in all living things.

The tree awakens throughout the night, sometimes when you least expect it. So don’t worry if you’ve missed one awakening—there’ll be another one yet to come, and chances are it will be completely different from the one that came before!

The Jungle Book: Alive with Magic

2. The Jungle Book: Alive with Magic

If you were as amazed as we were by the photorealism of Disney’s hit live-action feature, The Jungle Book, prepare to be wowed by the limited-engagement show The Jungle Book: Alive with Magic. The feature film is a great fit for Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Young stressed, with its stunning visual look and its themes that are tied to nature.

The nighttime spectacular, which is set on the Discovery River, combines live music and performance, breathtaking special effects, and Indian-inspired production numbers along with imagery from the films that can be viewed on massive curtains of water that glow to life above the river’s surface. Join Bagheera and other characters from The Jungle Book on a journey through the jungle, following Mowgli’s exciting, perilous, and sometimes hilarious wild encounters. Fans will hear favorite songs from the film—“Trust in Me,” “The Bare Necessities,” and “I Wan’na Be Like You”—all arranged in a rousing, Indian-inspired style.

Tiffins

3. Tiffins/Nomad Lounge

Imagineers have left no detail untouched in Walt Disney World’s newest signature restaurant—and neither have the chefs! Themed to travel, the Tiffins menu celebrates the world cultures that Disney Imagineers visited in creating Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Dishes are inspired by Africa, Asia, and South America—and the art that hangs in the restaurant is, as well.

Weary travelers can also rest a spell at the adjacent Nomad Lounge, which boasts waterfront views along with hand-crafted cocktails and sustainable wines from the same regions that inspired the Tiffins menu.

To learn more about this distinctive new restaurant and lounge, explore your way over to our first look at Tiffins.

Harambe Soccer Meerkats

4. Nighttime Entertainment Offerings

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is bringing you two new ways to get your party on this summer—or should we say, “parti”? At Harambe village in Africa, you can enjoy “Wildlife Parti,” a celebration that features singers, dancers, acrobats, and more. The Wildlife Parti has the feel of a bustling African village, bursting with authenticity and flair. From the Harambe Soccer Meerkats—acrobats who present comic soccer moves inspired by African animals—to the Karibu Sisters, a trio who perform elegant dance, a capella songs, and acoustic renditions of African party music, to the spectacularly outfitted Harambe Village Acrobats, there’s a feast for the eyes every evening.

Discovery Island Carnivale

The party is also underway at Discovery Island Carnivale, where dancers, stilt walkers, and musicians look to Carnival celebrations around the world to inspire a fete you won’t forget. You’ll hear the Paraguayan harp, distinctive Latin drumming, and world-beat rhythms.

Laura Offerdahl, a WDI Executive Producer, told D23, “One of our show directors says, ‘The more you look, the more you see.’ I think that’s true of all of our offerings.”

Expedition Everest

5. Favorite Attractions in a New Light

Expedition Everest is thrilling by day, and it takes excitement to a whole ’nother level at night! The same can be said for Kali River Rapids: ’Tis a perilous journey when the sun is out… after dark, it may be even more exhilarating. Taking Disney’s Animal Kingdom into the night is about more than just turning on the lights—it adds another dimension to all of your favorite attractions as you—literally—experience them in a brand-new light. The ride you know and love becomes a ride you get to know and love all over again.

Kilimanjaro Safaris at night

In the case of Kilimanjaro Safaris, Rohde explained to us that new technology made it possible for guests to now enjoy nocturnal encounters, lit as if by sunset. You’ll ride the all-terrain caravan through the savanna, but you might notice the animals behaving differently than they do in the light of day. Lighting is placed strategically, to evoke the setting sun and the rising moon, and your safari guide will help point out the reserve’s animal residents and share details about their nocturnal habits. Two new animal species have also come to the savanna: hyenas and African wild dogs. They’re known to stay up quite late.

Of course, everywhere you look at Disney’s Animal Kingdom—day or night!—you’ll find something that surprises, delights, and maybe even makes you think.

“Disney’s Animal Kingdom has a special kind of magic,” Rohde said. “It’s the magic of nature, and that’s a magic you can believe in—because it, in fact, is real. And we celebrate that magic as night falls—with light, with music, and with ceremonies.”

We couldn’t agree more!

Dazzling Enhancements Coming to the Disney Wonder

By Jeffrey Epstein

Faster than you can say Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, the Disney Wonder is about to undergo a spectacular transformation. Disney Cruise Line just announced a fleet (pun intended) of new enhancements and experiences that will be unveiled on the Wonder—one of the two original Cruise Line ships—this fall.

Disney Cruise Line Marvel Super Hero Academy

First up is Marvel Super Hero Academy, where the Marvel universe comes to life for guests in Disney’s Oceaneer Club—a space exclusively for kids 3 to 12 years old (but adults can get a peek during the open house when boarding!). This new space, exclusive to the Wonder, will offer extraordinary adventures where each young guest can play a pivotal role. In one mission Spider-Man will help children hone their “Spidey senses” by perfecting their skills of reflex, speed, and sharp minds. They may even get to see themselves in the headlines of the Daily Bugle! Kids can also be on the lookout for some awesome Avengers equipment such as Captain America’s World War II shield, Iron Man’s helmet, Spider Man’s web shooters, and Black Widow’s gauntlets.

Also in the Oceaneer’s Club, young ones can enjoy Frozen Adventures where, on a digital screen, Olaf leads summery games with a wintery twist and a sing-a-long of “In Summer.” In another activity, kids can prepare for a royal coronation and receive an in-person visit from Anna and Elsa! Speaking of characters look for Doc McStuffins to pay a visit to Club Disney Junior to help children diagnose and treat stuffed animals, and Woody and Jesse will both pay visits to Andy’s Room for some big toy-sized fun!

Disney Cruise Line Tiana's Place

Ever want to sample some of the N’awlins cuisine Tiana planned to cook up in The Princess and the Frog? Well you’re “almost there…” Also coming to the Disney Wonder is Tiana’s Place, a new restaurant in the rotational dining circuit that will transport guests to an era of southern charm and street party celebrations with a menu influenced by southern-style cuisine. The restaurant, which will feature live music and elaborate details, such as Tiana’s family photos and water lily-shaped candleholders (along with some of Tiana’s culinary awards), will make guests feel as if they are “Down in New Orleans.”

Disney Cruise Line English Pub

Adults will enjoy a new English Pub, which will feature dark woods, plush leather furniture, and brass accents. Guests will feel like they’re in a traditional neighborhood pub—albeit in the middle of the ocean. There will be a selection of British and specialty beers, and guests will also be able to sample a brew made especially for the pub. Disney fans will want to keep a keen eye for some enchanting “Disney details” that will be found in the artwork, props, and bits ‘n’ bobs throughout the space. Look for nods to favorites whether those tales be true, tall, or flat-out mad.

But wait, there’s more! Guests will also be able to enjoy:

  • After Hours – a new adult district that includes the English pub, an all-new night club and a shiny new model of the popular Cadillac Lounge
  • A reimagined and relaxing Senses Spa & Salon and a new Chill Teen Spa
  • Animator’s Palate main dining restaurant updated to introduce the popular “Drawn to Magic” and “Animation Magic” dinner shows
  • D Lounge for family games and entertainment
  • Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique providing magical makeovers for children
  • Edge club for tweens
  • Cabanas casual dining location
  • Palo specialty restaurant makeover with Venetian-inspired décor
  • Twist ‘n’ Spout water slide provides splashtacular fun on deck
  • Dory’s Reef splash zone offering fanciful water play for toddlers
  • AquaLab pool and interactive water play area for kids and families

The ship undergoes dry dock September 9 through October 23 in Cadiz, Spain, and the wave of new enhancements will debut on sailing from Galveston, Texas, starting November 10!

Sea you on deck!

D23’s Ultimate Countdown to Shanghai Disney Resort: Fantasyland

By Tyler Slater

“Fantasyland is dedicated to the young and the young at heart, to those who believe that when you wish upon a star your dreams do come true.”—Walt Disney, 1955

We are less than 15 days away from the grand opening of Shanghai Disney Resort, and today D23’s Ultimate Countdown continues with an inside look at the largest of all the lands: Fantasyland. Just beyond the majestic Enchanted Storybook Castle is a picturesque village and an enchanted forest created for the young and the young at heart. D23 takes fans inside this beautiful land where fairy tales live forever.

Shanghai Disneyland

The crown jewel of Shanghai Disney Resort is the Enchanted Storybook Castle—the largest Disney castle in history. Unique to Shanghai Disneyland, Walt Disney Imagineering integrated Chinese elements into Enchanted Storybook Castle that signify harmony, prosperity, and purity of heart and mind. This magnificent royal residence is also the only castle that celebrates all the Disney Princesses. Everywhere guests look, stories of the beloved princesses come to life, as if by the power of pixie dust. For example, the seasons are depicted through the tales of Tiana, Merida, Rapunzel, Elsa, and Anna. Guests should also keep an eye out for an illuminated marquee that reveals motifs attributed to Belle, Cinderella, and Snow White.

Inside the castle, guests can dine with royalty and delight in a delicious storybook-style feast at the Royal Banquet Hall Character Dining experience. Meanwhile, a princess-in-training” can receive a Disney Princess makeover, courtesy of her very own Fairy Godmother-in-Training at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique! Dreamers of all ages can step through the Magic Mirror portal and enter an enchanted dimension of Snow White’s fairy-tale world inside “Once Upon a Time” Adventure. Along the journey, guests can climb the castle stairs and meet Snow White’s friends and foes, and join the princess on her journey to “happily ever after.”

Voyage to the Crystal Grotto

Beneath Enchanted Storybook Castle is a secret, underground chamber where fountains of light leap and dance in shimmering pools and bring favorite Disney tales to life! Voyage to the Crystal Grotto is an engaging excursion that travels to this breathtaking destination beneath the castle—this is a Disney park first, and is found only in Shanghai Disneyland! Before reaching the Crystal Grotto, guests first travel the waters of Fantasyland and wind past magnificent sculpture gardens dedicated to timeless Disney epics like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, and many more. Each beautiful display captures the spirit and uplifting message of these film favorites and reminds visitors to follow their hearts and hold onto their dreams.

One of the most beloved attractions at any Disney park comes to life with the help of faith, trust, pixie dust, and an exciting new ride system! Peter Pan’s Flight welcomes adventurers to board a “flying” ship and sail through the skies over London and off to Never Land. In this classic attraction updated for Shanghai Disneyland, new magic brings the galleons closer to the action with varying speeds, allowing guests to be more immersed in the iconic story of Peter Pan.

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train

Families can embark on a twisting and turning adventure throughout Fantasyland village and through a diamond mine aboard Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. This adventurous family coaster begins as guests board a train of mine cars that winds through rolling hills and into a fabulous mine glittering with jewels, before a quick dash toward the cottage of the Seven Dwarfs. Like the popular attraction at Walt Disney World, each mine car is mounted in a cradle-like pivot that allows it to swing back and forth as the track turns.

Hunny Pot Spin

Deep in the Hundred Acre Wood, guests visiting Shanghai Disneyland will have the opportunity to explore the many adventures of that “silly old bear” aboard two attractions: Hunny Pot Spin and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Hunny Pot Spin is the sweet spot for Disney fans looking for free-wheeling family memories. Beneath a canopy strung with honey-dripping hives, ceramic “Hunny” jars twirl at speeds that vary based on guests’ turns of a wheel in the center of the honey pot. Inspired by the Mad Tea Party at other Disney parks, this Fantasyland experience has been redesigned for Shanghai Disneyland… still with the sweet ingredients for timeless Disney magic.

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh brings the world of the Hundred Acre Wood to life. Guests can glide by stories that are bursting with fun, friendship and everyone’s stuffed-with-fluff favorite, Winnie the Pooh. Along the way, families encounter the musical adventures of Eeyore, Gopher, Kanga, Piglet, Tigger, and tiny Roo, too. Based on scenes from Disney’s animated film of the same name, as well as the attraction found at other Disney parks, this popular adventure stars A.A. Milne’s beloved “bear of very little brain” and music from Disney Legends Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman!

Get ready to be lost in the Alice in Wonderland Maze, designed especially for Shanghai Disneyland. Don’t be late for this maze, the first attraction at a Disney park themed to Tim Burton’s live-action film Alice in Wonderland. During this experience, guests will enter the maze through one of three doors, each providing a different route into the dream-like landscape where Alice, Mad Hatter, Cheshire Cat and the rest of the fantastical cast of characters await.

Fantasyland Village

Also in the Fantasyland village, royal visitors can enter the Evergreen Playhouse and be transported to Arendelle to be part of the music and magic of Frozen: A Sing-Along Celebration. During the interactive performance, Anna, Elsa, and Kristoff are joined by two amusing Festival Guides who recreate the fun and adventure of Frozen and recount the enchanted tale. Guests are, of course, invited to “Let It Go” and sing along!

Knights and ladies looking for a bite to eat inside the Fantasyland forest can stop by the Tangled Tree Tavern, a pub inspired by the Snuggly Ducking from the Walt Disney Animation Studios film Tangled! Warped by time and the roots of the large tree nearby, Tangled Tree Tavern is full of Disney details that create an atmosphere perfectly fitting for the ruffians and thugs from the film. Guests can enjoy hearty fare that includes roasted chicken, fish & chips, Mongolian-style beef, and other hot dishes.

Alan Menken Goes “Under the Sea” for The Little Mermaid Live in Concert

A lovely mermaid who longs to replace her fins with feet… a dashing prince looking for true love… and an evil sea witch bent on revenge: Disney’s The Little Mermaid, first released in November 1989, retold the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale of the same name in a colorful, tuneful way—and it signaled a renaissance of sorts, ushering in a whole new era of Disney animated films. Featuring a score by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken (the first of their trio of Disney collaborations), the movie went on to win two Academy Awards®—and has delighted audiences for almost 30 years. And now, fans of the film can be a “part of its world” in a brand-new and amazingly special way.

Disney’s The Little Mermaid Live in Concert will take the legendary Hollywood Bowl in Hollywood, California, “under the sea” on Friday, June 3; Saturday, June 4; and Monday, June 6. A 71-piece live orchestra will accompany the film as it plays on the Bowl’s gigantic movie screen… and a truly star-studded cast of performers will sing the songs from the film—as well as a few from The Little Mermaid stage musical—live on stage! Grammy® nominee Sara Bareilles stars as Ariel; joining her are Rebel Wilson (Pitch Perfect) as Ursula, Tituss Burgess (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) as Sebastian, Darren Criss (Glee) as Prince Eric, Norm Lewis (Broadway’s Porgy and Bess) as King Triton, and John Stamos (Fuller House) as Chef Louis. As an added bonus, for the June 6 show, the film’s original Ariel—Disney Legend Jody Benson—will be reprising her role live and in person… and a special opening medley will be offered by Disney Legend Susan Egan (voice of Belle in Beauty and the Beast) and Brad Kane (singing voice of Aladdin in Aladdin) that same evening.

The Little Mermaid

Every performance will include a costume contest, a fireworks finale, and many more surprises… plus, the June 3 and 4 shows will open with a gaggle of tunes performed live by the film’s composer, Alan Menken! Recently, D23 was lucky enough to chat with the Disney Legend and Oscar® winner about what’s sure to make The Little Mermaid Live in Concert so marvelous.

D23: This concert sounds so exciting! When did you first hear there was interest in bringing something like this to the Hollywood Bowl?
Alan Menken (AM): I think it was a few months ago. As I remember, [it was] while we were doing some recording sessions for ABC’s Galavant; [The Little Mermaid Live in Concert creative director] Richard Kraft mentioned the idea to me, which sounded intriguing… I mean, I’ve seen events like this before, and they’re thrilling. You have a live orchestra playing against the film, which is just such a thrilling combination—it’s something that you’re familiar with, and yet it feels reinvented to you, and just totally fresh.

D23: And the cast is fantastic… What do you think these particular performers are going to bring to the material?
AM: Well, in the case of so many of them, they’re the generation that grew up with this movie. So it’s an entirely fresh take, as far as their talents, and yet it goes back to the root of their childhood—in terms of how they feel about it—which is wonderful to be around. It’s exciting for me and exciting for them, in different ways.

“It’s going to be a richer, deeper Little Mermaid experience than it’s ever been before.”

D23: Is this the first time that you, personally, have performed at the Hollywood Bowl?
AM: Actually, no—I performed at the Bowl in an evening with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, conducted by John Mauceri, [when] they did a night of Disney music… I played a medley for that as well.

D23: Are you excited to be back?
AM: Yes! It’s a special, unique, and beautiful venue, and I think the audience will be really excited about [the show]… it’ll just be fun to be around, I think.

D23: What do you think audiences will take home from this particular event, as opposed watching the film on DVD or seeing the stage musical?
AM: Well, this’ll be sort of a hybrid between the film and the stage version—we’re putting in some material from the stage show, interpolated into the film. So it’s going to be a richer, deeper The Little Mermaid experience than it’s ever been before. Certainly, it’ll be very fresh… very fresh indeed!

D23: Is there anything else you’d like D23 members and fans to know about The Little Mermaid Live in Concert?
AM: The Little Mermaid was the bloom of our innocence, y’know? It was written when Howard [Ashman] and I first came to Disney, and it’s hard to believe how many years have gone by since then, because it still feels so fresh and immediate in my life. And it’s so amazing to have a new generation embracing it in the way they are. I can’t wait to see what this’ll be like!

How many wonders can one cavern hold? If you’re a D23 Member in the Los Angeles area, you can find out firsthand by securing a seat for Disney’s The Little Mermaid Live in Concert—while supplies last, and at 10 percent off, to boot! Get all the info you need here.

Choux Fritters from Disneyland’s Royal Street Veranda

Enjoy these mouth-watering Choux Fritters from Disneyland’s Royal Street Veranda in New Orleans Square.

Yield: 3 dozen fritters

Ingredients

½ cup (1 stick) butter or margarine
1 cup boiling water
1 cup all-purpose flour, sifted
½ teaspoon salt
4 eggs
4 cups vegetable oil
Sugar

Method of Preparation

  1. Combine butter, boiling water, flour, and salt in a saucepan over moderate heat. Beat vigorously until mixture leaves side of pan and forms a ball. Remove from heat and cool slightly.
  2. Spoon into a bowl mixer or food processor with a steel blade. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. When all the eggs have been added, mixture should hold its shape in a spoon.
  3. Heat oil to 375°F. Dip a tablespoon first in hot oil, then in batter. Carefully drop a tablespoon of hot batter into the oil and cook until brown. Remove with slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  4. Sprinkle with sugar and serve hot.

Cook’s notes: The time it takes the fritter to brown in the hot oil depends on the size. Smaller fritters will take about 2 to 3 minutes.

Rewind Back to Disneyland’s First Expansion!

By Steven Vagnini

In 2015, Disney fans around the world began celebrating the diamond anniversary of Disneyland park and its original roster of attractions, from Jungle Cruise to Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. We can’t believe that now, almost a year later, we’re already commemorating the 60th anniversary of Disneyland’s first “expansion”—a lineup of all-new adventures that would transport guests into fascinating realms and even introduce the “D ticket!”

These new experiences—premiering less than a year after the park’s opening in July 1955—illustrated Walt Disney’s philosophy that Disneyland was something he could “keep developing, keep plussing and adding to”… a place where new adventures were always on the horizon.

So join us as D23 takes a look way back at the park attractions that opened 60 years ago—in 1956!

Storybook Land Canal Boats

In June 1956, Storybook Land Canal Boats replaced Canal Boats of the World, a Fantasyland attraction that offered very little in the way of scenery during its two-month run in 1955. Now, guests could cruise past charming miniature scenes from Disney animated films in an excursion that still enchants passengers today. And fun fact: At one time, Imagineers planned for the addition of an impressive “Rock Candy Mountain” as part of the voyage. Once inside the mountain, guests would have found themselves transported to the land of Oz, where they awaited a birthday party for Dorothy! (For those of you with confused looks, at the time the Disney Studio owned the rights to many of the Oz books by L. Frank Baum.)

Rainbow Caverns Mine Train

Guests could first travel through Frontierland’s spectacular caverns holding colorful pools, waterfalls, and geysers on July 2, 1956. During the attraction’s development, scientific expert and consultant Heinz Haber reportedly told Imagineer Claude Coats that the colorful water effects could never work. Walt brought Claude up to the challenge by saying what’s now considered one of his most famous quotes: “It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.” With inspiration from the True-Life Adventure films, Rainbow Caverns Mine Train would later transform into the elaborate Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland, and it would ultimately inspire scenes in the next mine train adventure: Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

Tom Sawyer Island Rafts

Although adventurers could cruise the Rivers of America via an authentic steam-powered sternwheeler in 1955, it wasn’t until June 16, 1956 that they could board a raft to explore Tom Sawyer Island. Inspiring later versions at Walt Disney World and Tokyo Disneyland, the original attraction featured such highlights as Fort Wilderness, the Suspension Ridge, Merry-Go-Round Rock, and even river fishin’—all inspired by the pages of Mark Twain’s classic novel. During the attraction’s dedication ceremonies, Missouri Governor Phil Donnelly requested California Governor Goodwin Knight to “take appropriate action which [would] cause the Tom Sawyer Island. . . to be deeded to the Sovereign State of Missouri—the only true and rightful possessor of any and all Tom Sawyer Islands in the world.” (To our knowledge, no action was ever taken by the State of California to de-annex this part of Anaheim.)

Indian War Canoes

Another original “D ticket” experience, the Indian War Canoes offered guests an additional means of exploring the picaresque Rivers of America starting July 4, 1956. Several years later, in 1971, the attraction was renamed Davy Crockett’s Explorer Canoes and was eventually reclassified as a Bear Country (now Critter Country) attraction. The canoes took their place in Disneyland history as the first attraction in which guests had to do all the work!

Astro-Jets

Although it didn’t receive the upgrade to “D ticket” status, the Astro-Jets added a sense of kinetic wonderment to the heart of Tomorrowland when it opened on March 24, 1956. Guests could make their jets rise and lower, a concept that carried on in later incarnations of the attraction: Tomorrowland Jets (1964–1966), Rocket Jets (1967–1997), and Astro Orbitor (1998–present). As Disney fans well know, the attraction has inspired other versions at Disney parks around the globe, including the League of Planets Astro Orbiter at Walt Disney World and the all-new Jet Packs at Shanghai Disneyland!

Skyway

Another bygone, but certainly not forgotten, attraction to join Disneyland in 1956 was the Skyway, which offered spectacular views on an aerial journey between Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. Although the Skyway was not originally classified as a “D ticket” experience, it was upgraded to that level by June 1959, when the new “E ticket” was added. It was at that time that Matterhorn Bobsleds premiered and offered Skyway passengers an even more spectacular journey—past alpine passes and icy caverns, right through the mountain.

…and even more adventures!

Even more new experiences awaited guests in 1956. The iconic Omnibus first traveled down Main Street, U.S.A. and was added to the ticket books as an “A coupon” attraction. From February 19 until September 7, professor and wild animal trainer George Keller showed off fantastic felines in Keller’s Jungle Killers, after the Mickey Mouse Circus came to a close. And on July 23, Junior Autopia opened in Fantasyland. Tailored to youngsters, the attraction was destined for a short run; it would only last until December.

Do you have memories of these beloved attractions past and present?
