Who’s Who—and Whatsit, Which, and More—in Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time

By Beth Deitchman

Meet the epic adventure’s enchanting cast of characters before the film tessers into theaters this Friday.

You’re about to experience an adventure like never before, as you journey across dimensions of space and time to fantastical planets with names like Camazotz and Uriel. Based on Madeleine L’Engle’s classic novel, Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time follows one girl’s transformative journey led by three celestial guides who help her to discover that strength comes from embracing one’s individuality and the best way to triumph over fear is to travel by one’s own light.

Visionary director Ava DuVernay says of the book, “A Wrinkle in Time is this beautiful stew of mystery, fantasy, adventure, science, romance, social commentary, and spirituality. It’s not often that we see girls at the center of a story—and certainly not girls of color—amid all these different worlds and planets. It really is something out of my wildest imagination.”

Such a unique story demands an amazing cast of characters, as well as a stellar roster of actors to bring them to life. Here are the true individuals you’ll meet when the film opens on March 9.

a wrinkle in time

Meg Murry (Storm Reid)
Middle school student Meg is bullied at school and struggles to fit in, but she’s facing even more challenges at home. Her father—a world-renowned physicist, like her mother—mysteriously disappeared four years ago after his discovered “tessering,” a wrinkling of time and space that makes intergalactic travel possible. When three otherworldly visitors—Mrs. Which, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Who—reveal that Mr. Murry is in grave danger because of his discovery, Meg must overcome her own flaws and insecurities and harness the strength she needs if she is going to defeat the darkness that has infiltrated the universe so that she can save her father—and maybe even the world. “One of the things I love most about Meg is that she doesn’t care what other people think of her,” says Storm Reid, who plays the film’s protagonist. “She gets bullied at school and there are all these rumors going around that her dad is missing, but she goes on this beautiful journey where she learns to love herself and to stand up and fight for her family.”

a wrinkle in time

Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey)
The three “Mrs.’s” are born of stardust and are now pure light, but they’ve come to Earth in human form to guide Meg on her journey. Mrs. Which—played by Disney Legend Oprah Winfrey—is the wisest of the three Mrs.’s. Says Winfrey, “Mrs. Which has been around for millennia. She is an angelic cosmic being who has complete empathy and connection to all humans and is one with the universe. She understands that love and light is all that matters and journeys throughout the universe to spread that message.”

a wrinkle in time

Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon)
Not only is Mrs. Whatsit the most free-spirited of the three Mrs.’s, but she is also the youngest, at a mere 2 billion years old. The former star who gave up her existence so that she could fight the darkness is new to Earth and also unaccustomed to the ways of humans. “She is innocent, almost childlike, and desperately wants to impress Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which, but she doesn’t understand how things work, so she is always playing with things,” Witherspoon says. “And sometimes she says things out loud, not realizing people can hear her, and sometimes they are inappropriate.”

a wrinkle in time

Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling)
Mrs. Who represents a melting pot of the world we live in, and the quietest of the Mrs.’s, prefers to speak the language of the world’s greatest spiritual warriors, citing quotes from the likes of Shakespeare, Churchill, and Buddha. “Mrs. Who is a very mysterious character because she speaks through other people’s words and sentiments, and for someone like me who is very expressive and always has a lot to say and a lot of opinions, it was a really challenging role to play. It also meant I wasn’t able to improvise on set, which is one of the first times that has ever happened,” Kaling recalls. Mrs. Who becomes a surrogate mother to Meg and the other children while they’re tessering through the galaxy, and she gives Meg the gift of her spectacles to use in her quest to rescue her father.

a wrinkle in time

Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe)
He may be Meg’s younger brother, but the 5-year-old Charles Wallace is wise beyond his years. While searching with Meg for their father, the extremely intelligent and gifted boy falls prey to the same evil energy that is holding Mr. Murry prisoner. “Charles Wallace is brilliant, but he is brilliant in a very 5-year-old way,” says A Wrinkle in Time screenwriter Jennifer Lee. “He sees the world and all the magic that’s in it and all the potential it holds, but he’s also a kid who isn’t afraid to speak his mind and who can sound a little arrogant for his age, which occasionally gets him into trouble. Still, there’s something special about him, and what makes him special also makes him vulnerable, like a lot of people in life.”

a wrinkle in time

Calvin (Levi Miller)
Calvin attends school with Meg, who has a crush on the young athlete. He struggles with his own familial problems, and becomes a true friend to Meg when she needs it the most. “Meg has a crush on Calvin but doesn’t want him to know,” says Reid. “Unfortunately, that makes her appear standoffish and not interested in him, but on the journey she learns about Calvin’s relationship with his father, which causes them to bond and begin to trust one another.”

a wrinkle in time

Mr. Murry (Chris Pine)
A brilliant physicist, Mr. Murry’s unproven theory of tessering earned him skepticism from within the scientific community before his disappearance. Actor Chris Pine believes that Mr. Murry finds himself pulled between the forces of his family and his desire to achieve great things. “Mr. Murry is a kind of frenetic, obsessed, ambitious doctor who really wants to do the right thing for his family—and for mankind—which he believes is going out into the universe to find something that has never been found before,” says producer Jim Whitaker. “He’s striving to find something that is bigger than himself, which becomes a complex dilemma for him because he doesn’t want to sacrifice his family in the process.”

a wrinkle in time

Mrs. Murry (Gugu Mbatha-Raw)
Kate Murry is both an award-winning biophysicist and a loving mother who works from a science lab in her home so she can maintain a loving and warm environment in which to raise her children following her husband’s baffling disappearance.

Red (Michael Peña)
Readers of L’Engle’s novel might remember the character as the Man with the Red Eyes. As played by Michael Peña in the film, Red joyfully approaches the children on a beach on the planet of Camazotz in outlandish attire, but he is really a pawn controlled by the IT that captivates Charles Wallace.

a wrinkle in time

Happy Medium (Zach Galifianakis)
A woman in the novel, the Happy Medium has been reimagined by the filmmakers. Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin visit the seer hoping he’ll enlighten them as to Mr. Murry’s whereabouts. “Zach is hilarious every time he opens his mouth but he’s also very emotional, too,” says Whitaker. “His character lives in a cave wanting to avoid the darkness altogether and it’s an existence that he’s created for himself in order to not interact with anyone.”

You can hear more from the Mrs.’s themselves—Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling—in our exclusive interview from D23 Expo 2017; and find out what Storm Reid told us about performing stunts alongside “Ms. Oprah” during our visit to the set of A Wrinkle in Time.

Remembering David Ogden Stiers and the Wonderful Characters he Brought to Life

By Megan Deppe

We are sorry to report on the passing of actor David Ogden Stiers, who died on Saturday, March 3, at the age of 75. Throughout Stiers’ long and impressive acting career, the versatile actor lent his voice to some of our favorite characters in Disney movies, video games, and on television. As Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast, Stiers delightfully invited us to be his guest, and as Jumba in Lilo & Stitch, he made us want to welcome him into our own ’ohana. In honor of David Ogden Stiers’ contribution to so many classic Disney animated films, we’ve taken a look back at some of his most memorable Disney roles.

Beauty and the Beast

1. Cogsworth/Narrator (Beauty and the Beast)
The fussy little clock who runs Beast’s household may be Stiers’ most iconic Disney role, and the actor also served as Beauty and the Beast’s narrator, drawing us in to the tale as old as time from the very beginning. As Cogsworth, Stiers brought a real sense of authority to his role as Beast’s helping hand, and he also looked to his impeccable comic timing to deliver some of the most memorable lines in the film, such as the mantle clock’s witty bon mot, “If it’s not Baroque, don’t fix it!” In an interview with Disney twenty-three around the time of the film’s 25th anniversary, Stiers recalled, “I think they sensed in me the ability to rise quickly to an unjustified sense of self-importance and a tendency to pontificate.”

Lilo and Stitch

2. Jumba (Lilo & Stitch)
Stiers returned to the role of the mad scientist who created our favorite little blue alien several times, voicing Jumba in several spinoff films, video games, and in Lilo & Stitch: The Series. Jumba may be a self-proclaimed “evil genius,” but at the end of the day he still cares about his little creation and the ’ohana that took him in—and we couldn’t help but come to care about Jumba as well, a testament to Stiers’ vocal talents.

Pocahontas

3. Governor Ratcliffe / Wiggins (Pocahontas)
In Pocahontas, Stiers took on the unusual challenge of voicing two characters: Governor Ratcliffe and his sidekick, the skinny and innocent Wiggins. The dual roles were a wonderful illustration of Stiers’ range as an actor, as he seamlessly switched back and forth between the dark and villainous Governor who only cared about gold and his foolish assistant.

4 Fenton Q. Harcourt (Atlantis: The Lost Empire)
Atlantis: The Lost Empire’s Fenton Q. Harcourt may have been a supporting role for Stiers, but it was an important one for the film’s plot. Milo’s determination to find the lost world of Atlantis has always been part of him, but it is his rejection by the Smithsonian’s board of directors—led by Harcourt—that truly gets him out of his boiler room. It is only through Harcourt’s dismissal of Milo and his dream that the linguist is ultimately able to find the path he was meant to walk.

Hunchback of Notre Dame

5. Archdeacon (The Hunchback of Notre Dame)
Stiers voiced the pivotal role of the Archdeacon, who saves Quasimodo’s life at the start of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. As kind and caring as the Archdeacon is, he is one of the few characters who is willing to call out Frollo on his terrible behavior. The Archdeacon looks past outward appearances to see the person within, showing kindness to Quasimodo while the young man lives in the cathedral, and ultimately giving Esmerelda the sage advice that leads her to Quasimodo.

And the Oscar® Goes to… Disney•Pixar’s Coco

By Beth Deitchman

Members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences love Disney•Pixar’s Coco as much as we do. Last night, the film received the Oscar® for Best Animated Feature at the 90th Oscars®, which were broadcast live on ABC.

coco oscars recap

Director Lee Unkrich joined producer Darla K. Anderson and co-director Adrian Molina to accept the award on behalf of the film. Expressing his gratitude to the people of Mexico, Unkrich said, “Coco would not exist without your endlessly beautiful culture and traditions. With Coco we tried to take a step forward toward a world where all children can grow up seeing characters in movies that look and talk and live like they do. Marginalized people deserve to feel like they belong. Representation matters.”

Coco’s signature song, “Remember Me,” was not forgotten by Academy voters, who gave it the Oscar for best Original Song. Actor Gael García Bernal, who voiced Héctor, joined Mexican pop-rock singer Natalia Lafourcade and Grammy® winner Miguel for a special rendition of the song that was performed during the live broadcast.

Earlier this week, the film was celebrated by the city of Los Angeles, which declared February 27—the day of the film’s release on Blu-ray and DVD—to be “Coco Day.” Coco has also received four VES Awards, 11 Annie Awards, and the Golden Globe® for Best Motion Picture, Animated.

Achieving Realistic Visual Effects in Star Wars: The Last Jedi

By Jim Frye

Ever since George Lucas established Industrial Light & Magic to create the ahead-of-their-time special effects for the very first Star Wars film back in 1975, innovative visual effects have been a hallmark of these movies. Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the latest tale in the mythic Skywalker saga, continues this tradition, having received four Oscar® nominations, including one for visual effects, recognizing the work of Ben Morris, Mike Mulholland, Chris Corbould, and Neal Scanlan.

Ben Morris, visual effects supervisor for The Last Jedi, has earned a reputation as a boundary-pushing innovator on films such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Gravity, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Gladiator and The Golden Compass, for which he was recognized with an Academy Award®. His work for writer-director Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi keeps that streak going, giving us stunningly beautiful vistas, jaw-dropping digital characters, and show-stealing moments that audiences talk about long after the house lights come up.

“We work on the visual problems and challenges that can’t be accomplished practically,” says Morris, on a call from London. “We work on explosions or pyrotechnics that can’t be staged by the practical special effects team. We also work on large-scale digital environments with the production design, and we create creatures that aren’t conducive to being created with practical makeup or animatronic characters.”

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Those characters include the fathiers (space horses), which were a significant challenge because of the integration of actors riding on them as they smash up the casino. Morris and his team also made digital porgs that look exactly the same as the animatronic porgs. And the crystal foxes, known as vulptex, on the planet of Crait were completely computer-generated.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

But there’s one character who is particularly satisfying to Morris. “I’m incredibly proud of Snoke,” he says. “We executed him with an entirely different look than the first movie. Rian didn’t want it to have a ghostly, gelatinous white zombie/hologram look.”

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Johnson was concerned that The Last Jedi’s Snoke—the one we meet in person instead of The Force Awaken’s hologram—could not realistically be achieved with computer effects. He considered, instead, using an actor in makeup. “I said, ‘No, no, no, we actually can and should do this in CG,” says Morris. “So we worked very closely with Rian and his initial concern was completely assuaged at the end. He just kept pushing our camera closer and closer to the character and he got more and more excited by what he looked like. The fact that Andy’s [Serkis] performance was so strong only added to that effect.” Andy Serkis played the character of Snoke using motion-capture technology.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Another impressive sequence was the battle on Crait, the mineral planet. Morris and his team actually traveled to the largest salt plains on earth—the Salar de Uynui in Bolivia—to shoot plates to help ground the sequence in reality and steer and drive the CG of the sequence. “From the very early concepts we knew it was going to be a beautiful white plain that would be destroyed and mashed up and gouged by the speeders,” says Morris. “We had to create these crazy red rooster tails and make them look like crystals flying. There were huge amounts of physical simulations going on there for all the pyrotechnics and ships crashing and walkers dragging things. So it was a big number, but as Rian always said, he wanted it to look like it almost ended in a bloodbath, where all the white salt had been blown off to show the red crystalline substance beneath.”

And the list goes on: Holdo’s hyperspace; the Lightsaber duel in the throne room; the explosions in the mega hanger—Star Wars: The Last Jedi is filled with shot after shot of beautiful, realistic visual effects that transport viewers into the film, and into another galaxy. Morris concludes, “These effects were on a scale that we’ve never dealt with before, and I think they’re an incredible success.”

We couldn’t agree more.

When Star Wars: The Last Jedi comes home, scene breakdowns that take you inside these and more incredible sequences are among the bonus features. The film is available on Digital (in HD and 4K Ultra HD) and via Movies Anywhere on March 13, and on Blu-ray 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and On-Demand on March 27.
