Inside the Walt Disney Archives – Graceland Exhibition Center

For nearly a century, The Walt Disney Company has created timeless family entertainment that has touched the hearts of generations the world over, encouraging us all to smile, sing, and even shed a tear. This tale began in 1923, when Walt Disney arrived in Hollywood. Over the next four decades, this one-of-a-kind storyteller introduced the world to unforgettable characters, created enchanting tales both old and new, and reimagined outdoor amusements into the realm of fully immersive themed entertainment.

Almost 50 years after the Walt Disney studio created a mouse named Mickey, Walt’s brother Roy O. Disney established the Walt Disney Archives at the company’s headquarters in Burbank, California. Its mission—to collect, preserve, and make available for research the history of Walt Disney and the company he founded, so that it can continue to inspire artists, audiences, dreamers, and doers of all ages. With more than 13,000 boxes of documents and merchandise items, a library of over 20 million photographs, more than 12,000 catalogued books, and several thousand historic props and costume pieces—from the first Mickey Mouse Club series to the latest feature films and Disney theme park attractions—the Walt Disney Archives documents Disney history as it happens. While not open to the public, Disney cast members, employees, Imagineers, and outside researchers working on official projects can visit the Archives to study and understand the past to help them create the Disney magic of today—and tomorrow!

This exhibition gives visitors a chance to get a glimpse into Disney’s storied past as they walk through a special recreation of the Archives, including a dazzling display of more than 450 historical objects, including original artwork, costumes, and props that tell the story of the department, The Walt Disney Company, and Walt Disney himself. The 10,000-square-foot traveling exhibit will be on display at the Graceland Exhibition Center in Memphis, Tennessee, from July 23, 2021, through January 2, 2022.

Meet the Characters of Encanto

By the D23 Team

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Encanto tells the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia... in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift, from super strength to the power to heal—every child except one, that is: Mirabel. But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she—the only ordinary Madrigal—might just be her exceptional family’s last hope.

So, who makes up the Madrigal clan? Read on for a look at who you’ll meet when the film debuts in just a few days’ time:

meet the characters of encanto

Mirabel (voice of Stephanie Beatriz)
Mirabel is the only child in her extraordinary family who wasn’t blessed with a magical gift. She’s determined to prove that she belongs—denying to everyone, including herself, that she feels all alone... even in her own house. Still, there’s something very special about Mirabel; her family just hasn’t figured out what that is just yet! “Mirabel reminds me of myself at her age—headstrong yet unsure, full of wonder and imagination but sometimes held back by self-doubt,” Beatriz recently said.

meet the characters of encanto

Abuela Alma (voice of María Cecilia Botero)
Alma is the matriarch of the Madrigal family. Her steadfast determination and unwavering hope led her to the magical Encanto, where she raised triplets Julieta, Pepa, and Bruno. To her surprise and delight, each of her children was blessed with a magical gift upon their 5th birthday, and the tradition continued with each of their children—except for Mirabel. Abuela (which means “grandmother” in Spanish) values the gifts given to each of her family members, ensuring that they are used to benefit and protect their community, and to honor the sacrifice of Abuelo (“grandfather”) Pedro.

meet the characters of encanto

Julieta (voice of Angie Cepeda) and Agustín (voice of Wilmer Valderrama)
Julieta and Agustín are parents to three daughters: Isabela, Luisa, and Mirabel. Julieta, one of Alma’s triplets, was blessed with the power to heal. Radiating warmth and kindness, she wields no magic wand, however—her magic is found in the food she lovingly prepares for all who need it. Meanwhile, Agustín is somewhat a fish out of water, having married into the magical family. Awkward and accident-prone, he always has the best intentions, especially when it comes to his daughters.

meet the characters of encanto

Isabela (voice of Diane Guererro)
Mirabel’s sister Isabela is pretty much perfect, with an abundance of grace and poise—not to mention a magical ability to make plants grow and flowers bloom.

meet the characters of encanto

Luisa (voice of Jessica Darrow)
Hardworking and determined, Mirabel’s other sister Luisa was given the gift of super strength. She is the go-to person for all of the heavy lifting.

meet the characters of encanto

Pepa (voice of Carolina Gaitán) and Félix (voice of Mauro Castillo)
Pepa and Félix are Mirabel’s quirky aunt and fun-loving uncle, and are parents to Dolores, Camilo, and Antonio. Pepa, one of Abuela Alma’s triplets, was gifted with the power to control the weather with her emotions. The forecast is often unpredictable, however, as Pepa’s emotions are far-reaching and ever-changing. Félix, meanwhile, provides a grounding force for his deeply passionate wife—he’s easygoing and often the life of the party.

meet the characters of encanto

Antonio (voice of Ravi Cabot-Conyers)
The youngest of the Madrigal clan, Antonio is shy with a huge heart. He has a special connection to Mirabel, relying on her for comfort and courage—especially on an important day when his cousin finds him nervously hiding under his bed.

meet the characters of encanto

Camilo (voice of Rhenzy Feliz)
Camilo, Pepa and Félix’s middle child, was born to entertain. Throw in his magical gift that allows him to switch up his appearance to be whomever he wants to be in the moment, and he’s secured his place in the spotlight.

meet the characters of encanto

Dolores (voice of Adassa)
Dolores is Mirabel’s cousin who’s usually the first to know the town’s biggest secrets, most compelling drama, and juiciest revelations. She can’t help it: she was blessed with extraordinary hearing. Whisper if you will, but Dolores can still hear it!

meet the characters of encanto

Bruno (voice of John Leguizamo)
The third of Alma’s triplets, Bruno has been estranged from the Madrigal family for as long as Mirabel can remember. Gifted with the ability to see the future, he made honest but often doomsaying predictions that proved problematic for Abuela and the rest of the family... so he disappeared, becoming the uncle nobody talks about.

See the entire Madrigal family in astonishing action when Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Encanto debuts in U.S. theaters on November 24!

Exploring Hawkeye’s MCU Origins

By Zach Johnson

In just a few weeks, Hawkeye will debut with two episodes on Disney+. The original series finds Jeremy Renner reprising his role as Clint Barton aka Hawkeye, a master archer who “just can’t seem to miss.” It’s been 10 years since the character made his Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) debut with a cameo in 2011’s Thor—and a lot has happened in the decade that followed. As one of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s best agents, the world’s greatest marksman is an expert acrobat, master assassin, and military-trained combatant. Oh, and he’s a devoted family man. Surprise! Before Hawkeye debuts, let’s take a look back at Clint’s MCU origins.

Hawkeye

After Thor (Chris Hemsworth) was banished to Midgard (that’s Earth, to you!), S.H.I.E.L.D. took special interest in his hammer, Mjolnir. Only the worthy are able to wield it, as dozens of agents quickly learned when they tried and failed to life it. Desperate to retrieve his hammer, Thor infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D.’s makeshift base, taking down agent after agent with relative ease. From his perch, Clint aimed his arrow at the God of Thunder. “You want me to slow him down, sir?” he asked Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg). “Or are you sending in more guys for him to beat up?” As Thor neared Mjolnir, leaving even more agents in his wake, he was stunned: “You better call it, Coulson, ‘cause I’m starting to root for this guy.”

Hawkeye

Clint wasn’t seen again until the opening scene of Marvel’s The Avengers (2012). S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) had assigned him to monitor Dr. Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård) as he experimented on the Tesseract. “If there’s any tampering, sir, it wasn’t at this end,” Clint told Fury, adding, “The cube is a doorway to the other end of space, right? Well, doors open from both sides.” Just then, the Tesseract activated and opened a wormhole, allowing Loki (Tom Hiddleston) to reach Earth. Loki then stole the Tesseract and used his scepter to control the minds of Clint, Dr. Selvig and other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.

Clint helped Loki escape, despite Fury’s hope to bury them under “a hundred feet of rock.” He later resurfaced in Stuttgart, Germany, where he stole the iridium needed to stabilize the Tesseract’s power. While there, Tony Stark aka Iron Man (Disney Legend Robert Downey Jr.), Steve Rogers aka Captain America (Chris Evans), and Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) were able to capture Loki and detain him aboard S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Helicarrier. There, Natasha questioned the God of Mischief about what he did to Clint and vowed to help him, as she owed him a debt. “I got on S.H.I.E.L.D.’s radar in a bad way,” she explained. “Agent Barton was sent to kill me. He made a different call.” After she tricked Loki into revealing the next phase of his plan—unleashing The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo)—a mind-controlled Clint and the other possessed agents attacked the Helicarrier.

Hawkeye

After penetrating the mainframe, resulting in engine power loss, Clint went head-to-head with Natasha—who, ironically, bonked his head so hard it knocked him unconscious! When he came to, Natasha was there to help him “level out” before rejoining the mission. “You don’t understand. Have you ever had someone take your brain and play, pull you out and stuff something else back in?” Clint asked. “Do you know what it’s like to be unmade?” For a moment, he forgot that of all people, Natasha understood. Clint tried to make sense of what he’d done while under Loki’s spell, but Natasha stopped him. “Don’t do that to yourself, Clint,” she said. “This is Loki. This is monsters and magic and nothing we were ever trained for.” No kidding. The Avengers then traveled to New York, where Loki was about to open a wormhole above Stark Tower, allowing the Chitauri army to invade Earth.

There, Clint and Natasha helped evacuate civilians and take down the Chitauri one by one. Eventually, Steve stationed Clint on a rooftop to get “eyes on everything” and “call out patterns and strays.” Clint was able to target Loki… who caught his arrow, thinking he’d outsmarted Clint, only for it to explode in his hands and send him hurtling toward Stark Tower! Together, the newly formed Avengers then stopped Loki and closed the wormhole.

Hawkeye

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) opened with the Avengers raiding a Hydra facility to stop Baron Wolfgang von Strucker (Thomas Kretschmann), who had experimented on humans using Loki’s scepter. Clint was the first Avenger to encounter one of these enhanced humans in the field: the speedster Pietro Maximoff (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). After getting knocked to the ground (“You didn’t see that coming?” Pietro joked), Clint was injured by a nearby bunker blast. Later, at Avengers Tower, Tony ran some tests as he patched up Clint’s wounds. “Unfortunately, he’s still Barton…” Tony quipped. “He’s fine. He’s thirsty.”

The Avengers then celebrated their victory with a party—one that was cut short after an unexpectedly sentient robot, Ultron (James Spader), successfully overpowered Tony’s artificial intelligence, J.A.R.V.I.S., and attacked them. Ultron escaped and recruited the Maximoff twins, Pietro and Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen), before heading to Johannesburg to get vibranium from arms dealer Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis). The Avengers followed, but they were no match for Wanda, who messed with their minds. Clint, however, stopped Wanda in her tracks. “I’ve done the whole mind control thing,” Clint explained. “Not a fan.”

Unfortunately, one of the Avengers Wanda messed with was The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). The destruction he caused in Johannesburg led to major backlash, meaning the Avengers needed to go off the grid. Luckily, Clint knew of a “safe house” back in the U.S. Save for Natasha, everyone was surprised when they arrived at a farm and were greeted by Clint’s pregnant wife, Laura (Linda Cardellini), and their two children—people and relationships they never knew existed. “Fury helped me set this up when I joined,” Clint explained. “He kept it of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s files. I’d like to keep I that way. I figured it’s a good place to lay low.”

In a private moment, Laura expressed concern that the Avengers actually needed Clint, “which is a lot scarier” than if they didn’t. Laura was “proud,” of course, but she was still worried: “You need to be sure that this team is really a team and that they have your back.”

Hawkeye

Meanwhile, in Seoul, Ultron forced Dr. Helen Cho (Claudia Kim) to craft him a new body using her Regeneration Cradle, vibranium, and the Infinity Stone inside Loki’s scepter. As Ultron was uploading himself into a synthetic body, Wanda was able to read his mind—and it turned her and Pietro against him. Clint, Natasha, and Steve managed to retrieve the synthetic body before the transfer was complete—but Ultron ultimately captured Natasha.

Back at Avengers Tower, Tony asked Clint to try some “old-school spy stuff” to track her down. Tony and Bruce then secretly uploaded J.A.R.V.I.S. into the synthetic body, creating Vision (Paul Bettany). The Avengers traveled to Sokovia, along with the Maximoff twins, to rescue Natasha and stop Ultron once and for all. Clint helped with the evacuation efforts as Ultron used the leftover Vibranium to send the Sokovian city floating into the sky.

Feeling unprepared for battle, Wanda began to spiral and blame herself. Luckily, Clint gave her the no-nonsense pep talk she needed. “Hey, look at me. It’s your fault. It’s everyone’s fault. Who cares? Are you up for this? Are you?” Clint asked her. “Look, I just need to know because the city is flying, OK? Look, the city is flying, we’re fighting an army of robots, and I have a bow and arrow. None of this makes sense. But I’m going back out there because it’s my job, OK? And I can’t do my job and babysit. It doesn’t matter what you did or what you were. If you go out there, you fight, and you fight to kill. Stay in here, you’re good; I’ll send your brother to come find out. But if you step out that door, you are an Avenger. All right?”

Wanda walked out, proving to Clint—and to herself—that she was more than capable of fighting Ultron. Clint then resumed rescuing civilians, joining Natasha in the search for stragglers. After spotting a child in the line of fire, Clint raced to protect him—but Pietro was faster, using his own body to shield them from Ultron’s blast. Before collapsing, Pietro locked eyes with Clint and said, “You didn’t see that coming.” Clint then brought the child—and Pietro’s lifeless body—to a nearby boat, where Clint said, “It’s been a long day.”

Indeed. After beating Ultron, Clint reunited with Laura and retired. Or so he thought…

Hawkeye

In Captain America: Civil War (2016), the Sokovia Accords went into effect—meaning the Avengers now operated under the supervision of a United Nations panel, only when and if that panel deemed it necessary. The decision to give up their autonomy divided the team, and after Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) was framed for a terrorist attack that occurred during the signing of the Sokovia Accords, the division only increased.

Clint sided with Steve, who opposed becoming heroes for hire—and at his request, Clint came out of retirement. His first mission was to free Wanda from Avengers HQ in upstate New York so she could join their fight to clear Bucky’s name—and, ultimately, bring whoever was behind the UN attack to justice. Clint and Wanda picked up another ally, Scott Lang aka Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), on their way to meet Steve at Leipzig/Halle Airport. “You know I wouldn’t have called if I had any other choice,” Steve told Clint upon their arrival, to which Clint replied, “Hey, man, you’re doing me a favor. Besides, I owe a debt.”

The fractured Avengers then fought each other at the airport, with Clint going up against the likes of Tony and T’Challa aka Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman)—not to mention his closest ally, Natasha. “We’re still friends, right?” she asked in between punches, to which Clint quipped, “Depends on how hard you hit me.” Natasha ultimately joined Clint’s side, helping Steve and Bucky to escape; Clint and the others weren’t so lucky and found themselves imprisoned at the Raft prison. Later, after Tony realized what Steve and Bucky were up against, he visited Clint and the others to ask for their help. He didn’t get a warm welcome, of course—least of all from Clint. “The futurist, gentlemen! The futurist is here!” Clint shouted upon seeing Tony. “He sees all! He knows what’s best for you… whether you like it or not.” The word “criminal,” he added, “didn’t used to mean me, or Sam, or Wanda.” Tony, however, was unsympathetic, reminding Clint that he broke Sokovia Accords. “You’re all grown up. You got a wife and kids,” Tony said. “I don’t understand. Why didn’t you think about them before you chose the wrong side?” Visibly angry at the mention of his family, Clint said, “You gotta watch your back with this guy. There’s a chance he’s gonna break it!”

Hawkeye

Clint was noticeably M.I.A. during the Battle of Wakanda in Avenger: Infinity War (2018), due to his now being on house arrest. But trouble had a way of finding him… Avengers: Endgame (2019) opened with Clint and his family enjoying a seemingly ordinary day—that is, until Thanos (Josh Brolin) eliminated half of all life in the galaxy with the snap of his fingers. It was heartbreaking to see Clint calling out for his wife and kids, all of whom were lost in what became known as the Blip. Flash forward five years, and Natasha got a tip about Clint’s whereabouts in Tokyo. She found a man who was no longer Hawkeye; instead, he had become Ronin, a masked vigilante. “Killing all these people isn’t going to bring your family back,” Natasha said. “We found something; a chance, maybe.” Clint had lost hope, but Natasha was there to restore it. He joined the Avengers (the ones who had survived the Blip) and helped them to figure out the mechanics of time travel so they could reverse Thanos’ damage and bring back billions of people, including his family. Before long, Clint and Natasha were traveling back to 2014 in search of the Soul Stone on the planet Vormir.

Upon their arrival, the Red Skull (Ross Marquand) delivered an ominous message: “In order to take the Stone, you must lose that which you love.” In other words, he said, they must exchange “a soul for a soul.” After some discussion, Clint and Natasha agreed they must do “whatever it takes.” But which Avenger would sacrifice their life? “For the past five years, I’ve been trying to do one thing: Get to right here,” Natasha argued. “That’s all it’s been about: bringing everybody back.” When Clint joked that she was getting “all decent on me now,” Natasha smirked and replied, “What? You think I want to do it? I’m trying to save your life, you idiot.” But Clint felt he should be the one to sacrifice himself, saying, “Natasha, you know what I’ve done. You know what I’ve become.” Harkening back to their conversation in Marvel’s The Avengers, Natasha said, “I don’t judge people on their worst mistakes.” After Clint suggested maybe she should, she gently reminded him, “You didn’t.” What followed was a heartbreaking fight between Clint and Natasha to sacrifice their own life instead of the other’s. In the end, Natasha won, telling her friend, “Let me go… it’s OK.”

Clint acquired the Soul Stone and returned to the year 2023, where he had to break the news to the Avengers. “We can’t get her back,” he told Thor. “It can’t be undone. It can’t.” Later, The Hulk used the six Infinity Stones to bring billions back (Natasha excluded), and Clint got a call from Laura. Just then, Thanos rained fire on the Avengers compound. Clint found the Infinity Gauntlet amid the rubble and realized he had to keep it away from the Chitauri. He managed to escape with it and eventually handed it off to T’Challa. The Avengers ultimately beat Thanos, thanks to Tony’s sacrifice. And at Tony’s funeral—which Clint attended with his family—he shared a quiet moment with Wanda, who was also grieving the loss of Vision. “You know, I wish there was a way that I could let her know that we won. We did it,” he said. Looking into the distance, she said, “She knows. They both do.”

Hawkeye

Of course, Clint isn’t out of the woods. In a post-credits scene for Black Widow (2021), Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) visited Natasha’s sister, Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh). Handing her a tablet with Clint’s picture on display, she said, “I’ve got your next target… Maybe you’d like a shot at the man responsible for your sister’s death?”

Clint will return in Hawkeye, an original series for Disney+ set in post-Blip New York City. The former Avenger has a seemingly simple mission: get back to his family for Christmas. But when a threat from his past shows up, he reluctantly teams up with Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld)—a skilled archer and his biggest fan—to unravel a criminal conspiracy.

Q&A With Josh Gad from Olaf Presents

By James Frye

Olaf goes from snowman to showman in his unique “retelling” of five favorite Disney animated tales in the brand-new Olaf Presents, a series of shorts from Walt Disney Animation Studios premiering today on Disney+ (it’s Disney+ Day!). In the new shorts, the diminutive frosty fellow takes on roles from The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Aladdin, Tangled, and Moana. And returning as the voice of Olaf, which started in 2013 with Frozen up through the 2021 Emmy®-nominated short Once Upon a Snowman, is Josh Gad. In this Q&A, Gad tells us about the new series, his comedy idol, and what was his dream come true.

D23: What was your favorite part about getting to retell these iconic Disney Animation stories with Olaf?
JOSH GAD (JG): Revisiting moments from all of the films was a joy, but specifically the movies I grew up with. So, I was at that perfect age during the second golden age of Disney Animation. I remember seeing The Little Mermaid in the theatre and being, like, what is this? It feels like a Broadway show on screen. It was like the first time I can remember applauding in a theatre, after the songs were done. Getting to go back and specifically revisit those films was a dream come true.

Olaf Presents

D23: Do you have any specific memories that stand out from the production of these shorts?
JG: Yes, getting to play in the footsteps of my idol, Robin Williams, in the world of Aladdin was sort of like a pinch myself, very emotional experience, for me.

D23: What made you want to return to Olaf?
JG: I loved getting to find new wrinkles in this character who is so full of imagination, full of innocence and naivete, and he approaches everything with a glass-is-half-full mentality. But on top of that, juxtaposing it with the joy of getting to sort of send up if you will, some of my favorite films. That was the real privilege and fun and thrill for me.

D23: What have you loved about playing this character for nearly 10 years?
JG: He’s innocent and has so many questions. And then in Frozen 2, he’s sort of an adolescent, and he starts to go through this existential kind of crisis. And I think in each of the shorts—and along the way—there’s this subtle growth happening in him that I think is important to keeping him interesting and dynamic, so that it never feels like you’re just seeing him do the same thing again and again. That there are new wrinkles.

Olaf Presents

D23: Would you return to voice more Olaf?
JG: As long as we have opportunities for original developmental elements to bring him, then I think the sky’s the limit with him… Not that anyone wants to see Olaf as an old, angry man.

D23: If you had the chance to meet Olaf in the real world, what would you say to him?
JG: I’d ask him to lend me some cash and then tell him to find his own voice and stop following me around.

Decking the Halls with the Cast of Home Sweet Home Alone

By Courtney Potter

It’s the reimagining of a beloved holiday film franchise, and it starts jingling its proverbial bells on Disney+ Day—this Friday, November 12! In Home Sweet Home Alone, married couple Pam and Jeff McKenzie (Ellie Kemper and Rob Delaney) are more frazzled then usual during the holiday season; Jeff has lost his job, and they find themselves contemplating selling their beloved Winnetka, Illinois, home to make ends meet. But when they realize they own a family heirloom that could fetch a lot of money, they believe their prayers have been answered. However, during an open house, someone takes said heirloom… and that someone is annoying 10-year-old Max Mercer (Archie Yates), whose family has recently moved in next door. Over at the Mercer residence, things are just as nutty—and in the ruckus of his large family leaving for their holiday trip to Japan, Max is left behind… The separation from his mother Carol (Aisling Bea) and the subsequent freedom and solitude is, surprisingly, not all that he dreamed it could be.

Having few options left, Pam and Jeff decide to track Max down and retrieve their heirloom—which, as you might imagine, is mucheasier said than done. With the McKenzies’ sights set on the Mercer home, it’s up to Max to protect it from these innocent-seeming trespassers… and he’ll do whatever it takes to keep them out! Hijinks of epic proportions ensue—but despite the chaos around him, Max soon comes to realize there really is no place like home sweet home.

D23 was lucky to hear directly from some of Home Sweet Home Alone’s delightful cast—including Yates, Kemper, Delaney, Bea, and Ally Maki (Jeff’s sister-in-law, Mei)—during a rollicking virtual press conference. Read on for a few of their memorable stories from the making of the film…

Home Sweet Home Alone

Kemper and Delaney on the physical demands of their roles:
“They were comprehensive,” Delaney admitted. “I mean, we started stunt training well before we started shooting—thank goodness. And we were really required to do most of the stunts in the film! Professional stunt people did them as well,” he added, chuckling, “and they edited them in. But they really put us through the paces! Which, frankly, was shocking to me because I thought that I would just have to dip in for a humorous rejoinder now and then—but they’re like, ‘No, we’re going to require you to be in the entire film and do the stunts.’ Which was scary, educational, and really very fun.”

Kemper agreed, adding, “It turned out to be a lot of fun. I hadn’t done anything like that before! It was challenging, but also funny—and athletic in a way that I wasn’t expecting.”

Yates on honoring the original films while making the role of Max his own:
“Well, I did take a lot of inspiration from the original Home Alone movies,” the Jojo Rabbit star said. “I mean, I religiously watch them every year at Christmas, so it was pretty easy for me to relate [to the character of Kevin McCallister]. But then again, Max is supposed to be a completely different character from Kevin—so while I did want it to [honor] the classic, I also wanted it to be original and a bit different. Because that’s what this film is all about. It’s the same universe, but it’s a completely different story.”

Bea and Maki on bringing Home Alone’s heartfelt hilarity to their film:
“[We wanted to highlight] that emotional moment of seeing your son again,” Bea explained, recalling a favorite moment from the original film, “and that moment to the door. I think that’s because you [as the audience] get such a feeling from that moment.”

Added Maki, “The hijinks! I feel like we all grew up on this movie—and just seeing the booby traps being set; I think we all wanted to have like a booby-trap house growing up!”

The cast on switching up who you “root for” in this iteration:
“Our mission was one inspired by, I think, goodness,” said Kemper. “Our motives were good: We want to save our family.”

“That said though, for me, there is a villain in the film, and he’s played by Archie Yates and his character is named Max Mercer!” Delaney continued, laughing. “Because if we’re trying to get back our stuff, that we need to save our family—I don’t think of myself as like a method actor, but the whole time we were filming, I was like, ‘Oh, Max is the enemy.’ But when I watched the [finished] film, and you felt sympathetic towards Max, I was like, ‘Oh, this must be a different film than the one I appeared in.’” With his fellow cast members cracking up, he added, “So, certainly in watching it, I think there’s no [true] ‘antagonists.’”

Bea agreed, adding, “I think, like Rob and Ellie were talking about, there’s a bit of a change in the balance of ‘evil versus good.’ In [the earlier Home Alone films], you were very aware of who was bad and who was good. And now this time ‘round, you can sort of understand the ‘burglars’—where are they coming from, emotionally, in the movie.”

Home Sweet Home Alone

… and on working with Devin Ratray, who portrayed Kevin’s bratty older brother Buzz McCallister in the original films:
“The one day I worked with him, he was so cool,” said Yates. “He was [particularly] awesome to work with. I was actually like really nervous at first, because I thought I was like looking at a [VIP]!” “We sadly didn’t get to take a photo with him,” continued Kemper, “because it was so cold outside that day—I think the cameras froze that day… He’s a fantastic actor. And I was so happy that [he] could do this film; he’s brilliant.” Added Delaney, “Seeing his scene with [Maki], and I’m watching him… and he’s so great and so charming. And the thing is, it’s not a ‘stunt’ to have him [in this film]—yes, you’re thrilled to see him come back, but he’s so good in this. It’s a very special performance.”

Terrific Tales from Encanto’s Vibrant Voice Cast

By Courtney Potter

Meet the Madrigals—a family who lives hidden in the majestic mountains of Colombia. Their home is an Encanto, a truly wondrous place brimming with enchantment that’s blessed every child in the clan with a unique gift… well, every child except one: 15-year-old Mirabel (voice of Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Stephanie Beatriz). Upon discovering that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family’s last hope.

With musical numbers by Tony® Award-winning and Oscar®-nominated songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda, Encanto—Walt Disney Animation Studios’ milestone 60th animated feature—will begin enchanting audiences in just a few weeks’ time! Recently, D23 was lucky to hear directly from the majority of the film’s incredible voice cast, including Beatriz, John Leguizamo (voice of Bruno), María Cecilia Botero (voice of Abuela Alma), Diane Guerrero (voice of Isabela), Jessica Darrow (voice of Luisa), Angie Cepeda (voice of Julieta), Mauro Castillo (voice of Félix), Carolina Gaitán (voice of Pepa), Adassa (voice of Dolores), Rhenzy Feliz (voice of Camilo), and Ravi Cabot-Conyers (voice of Antonio). Read on for their thoughts, as well as a peek into why being a part of Encanto was so meaningful.

Beatriz on how she relates to her character, Mirabel:
“Mirabel doesn’t have a gift, which I find extremely relatable,” the actress explained, “because there have been many times in my life where I felt like I didn’t belong, I didn’t measure up, I wasn’t talented enough to be there. I had that sort of ‘imposter syndrome.’ But I also discovered by getting older, and working more and more on trusting myself, that I do have something to offer, and it is special—I am myself. Not everybody’s gonna love [it], that but the people that do are gonna love it really hard.”

She continued, “Disney has this incredible tradition of crafting [female] protagonists and their stories who are these girls and women who are really brave, really good at heart, want the best for everyone around them—and are willing to go on these sometimes really dangerous, crazy, magical adventures to get what they want. And I’m really proud to be part of that legacy—to honor the work of all of the women that have come before me that have been in this position, and also hopefully add something new to it as well.”

Encanto

Leguizamo on voicing Bruno, one of the more mysterious members of the Madrigal family:
“Bruno is that relative that always says the wrong thing at every party,” admitted the Emmy® and Tony Award winner, chuckling. “[The one] who wrecks every holiday because they’re always talking too much.  That’s who I am. I’m Bruno… I had that bit of an issue. I was always talking too much, saying everything people were afraid to say; I would say it! My mom would say [in Spanish], ‘Please just be quiet, stop talking!’ I was the black sheep of the family. So, I relate to Bruno.”

Botero on feeling close to her character, the matriarch of the Madrigal family:
As the well-known Spanish-language television actress explained, “[Abuela Alma] is the one who [protects] the family, the one that keeps the family together… [And] I think I am the abuela, for all my nieces and everybody. What I really like about Abuela Alma is that she’s not a typical grandmother. She’s [strict] sometimes, but she also so tender and so lovely.”

Cepeda on falling in love with her character, Mirabel’s mother, Julieta:
“Julieta’s very kind, [and] she’s warm,” the actress explained, “and she cares so much about her family, and for the people in her community. She has this gift [where] she heals people with the food that she cooks, and she does that for all who need it. And she also has this special relationship with Mirabel; she knows how Mirabel feels about not having a gift, and [recognizes] the fact that she feels that she doesn’t belong—and she’s always there for her. I relate to that… I have a lot of nieces and nephews, and it’s so important for me to be there for them, and to try and [offer] some kind of guidance. Because I know how that feels—when you feel awkward, when you feel like you don’t belong, when you’re insecure. So, I try to be that rock in my family as well. Family’s everything for me. And I also love cooking!”

Darrow on why she embraces her character Luisa, one of Mirabel’s sisters:
“I love Luisa so much, because of how much we are alike,” she admitted, laughingly adding, “We are both tough crybabies, y’know? We’ve got the tough exterior, but a soft, mushy center. We’re [also] very much the rock of both of our families [like Angie mentioned], I think. We definitely keep it all together—whether it be family secrets or just general ‘moderation’ within the family. We take care of our sisters, our mom, our dad, our abuela. We would both do anything for our abuelas! Luisa’s gift is super strength, and that is both physical and emotional. [I think] she is the emotional superhero of the film.”

Encanto

Guerrero on what she’s learned from her portrayal of Mirabel’s other sister, Isabela:
“Isabela’s gift is to make things grow: plants and beautiful flowers,” she explained. “And so, with this gift came the expectation that she just had to be ‘perfect’ and beautiful and ‘just so.’ She uses it kind of like a defense mechanism—this [gift] that has worked for her for so long. But I think she discovers that, when you’re growing up, and you’re an actual real human being,” she added, chuckling, “that perfection really isn’t sustainable. I really relate to that in my own life. I used to think that if you weren’t perfect—if you didn’t do things right—then that would just be the end of it, you know? I used to be so afraid to mess up and ask questions and seem like I was in trouble. I think I used it to protect myself [from that] for a long time, as I was growing up. But like Isabela, I’ve been trying to break free from that… I want to evolve.”

Gaitán, who voices Pepa, Mirabel’s aunt, on finding common ground with her character:
“I really can relate to Pepa because I’m a little bit [dramatic] as well,” said the actress and salsa singer. “Sometimes [I’m] a little bit like a drama queen. But most of all, I think it’s about vulnerability—not to be in control of everything. And I really love that about Pepa. She’s emotional, and she allows herself to be emotional. I think that that’s very beautiful about a person, and about a character. And that’s also a gift.  And I think [that relates to Colombia], the climate variety that we have. Pepa’s [Encanto] gift is that she’s always raining or thundering—and Colombia is like that, you know? One city is cold, and you can drive a few hours to another city and it’s super warm. It’s everything in Pepa, and everything about Pepa that I love. And, of course, the music [of the film] as well… I think Colombia deserves so much to be told [about] in this way—because we are all this. We are colorful, we are funny people, we are great people. And also, there’s something very particular that I can notice here in this movie, and it’s the magical realism; you can notice it in every single character.”

Castillo on how he brought his own life experiences to Félix, who married into the Madrigal clan:
“Félix is the soul of the party!” the actor and Latin Grammy® Award-nominated singer exclaimed. “He loves music, and he deeply loves his wife Pepa—and he admires every single member of the family. And he likes food a lot! He’s very much like me; I’m a salsa singer, and I love to dance and to show all the goodness of the Colombian Pacific, the region in Colombia that I’m from. The world capital of the salsa—la capital mundial de la salsa! So, this character has a lot of things in common with me… and I have a very special [bond] with Casa Madrigal and [whole] family.”

Encanto

Adassa on portraying Dolores, Pepa and Félix’s oldest child:
The singer and actress admitted, “I absolutely love the character. I think that [directors] Byron Howard and Jared Bush and [co-director] Charise Castro Smith did an amazing job creating this character, because she has all the secrets; [her gift is that] she can hear everything. But sometimes, her well-placed heart is a little bit out of order. When she speaks up and she can’t help it… And I love her character, because even though she is a strong part of the family, sometimes she can [go] unnoticed… With Dolores, it’s just everything’s so loud that she has to maintain a certain composure to be able to deal with things around her, in her environment. She means well—she just [sometimes] puts her foot in her mouth!”

Feliz on the fun of bringing Camilo, Pepa and Félix’s shape-shifting son, to life:
“Camilo is someone who’s a little crazy, a little dramatic; someone who’s a lot of fun and has a lot of energy,” said the actor. “Camilo is this entertainer—he wants to make everyone laugh and have a good time. And I feel like that [too]; I’m an actor, so when you get that spotlight, it feels nice, it feels good! So, he’s kind of like that—he’s out there trying to get that attention; he was born for the spotlight. He has a good time, and he’s a lot of fun—but he loves his family.”

Cabot-Conyers on voicing Antonio, Dolores and Camilo’s brother and the youngest member of the Madrigal clan:
“He’s kind of an introvert,” he admitted. “But he also has a really big heart. [In my own life], I can talk with all different sorts of people… [During the film], Antonio finally gets out of his shell and is able to communicate with animals.”

Encanto

Leguizamo on seeing his such robust Colombian representation on the big screen in Encanto:
“There were a couple of moments that really hit me hard,” the comedian and actor admitted. “As grown man, I was like, ‘Yo, my tears are welling up!’ Because [the film represents] how my Colombian family looks… I mean, it looked like my family—it looked like the way I grew up! And to see that, you just feel like, ‘Oh my god, we’ve arrived…’”

BONUS: Lin-Manuel Miranda on an early inspiration for his work on the film:
“I remember my father, Luis, telling us a story about his grandmother in Puerto Rico,” the Oscar nominee (Disney’s Moana) recalled. “She had lots of kids, and those kids married, and they all stayed under the same roof. And she ‘ruled’ with such certainty that people would bring their paychecks to her, and she would reallocate the wealth amongst the kids—the married couples; her children and grandchildren,” he added, laughing. “And that is the kind of rule that ended up informing Abuela Alma—who really loves her family dearly, but holds it super tight. That’s just where our story begins…”
