Nielsen, Kay

Nielsen, Kay (1886-1957) Sketch artist, story man, and designer; came to Disney in 1939 and worked on concepts for films on The Little Mermaid and Ride of the Valkyries. He created designs for the Night on Bald Mountain segment of Fantasia. Nielsen’s Little Mermaid designs were brought out of the Archives in the 1980s to inspire the artists who were again working on that story, and they thought enough of Nielsen’s sketches to give him a film credit. Nielsen left Disney in 1941, and returned briefly in 1952-1953. He is known for his non-Disney work as a book illustrator of such classics as East of the Sun and West of the Moon.
