Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast A stage version of the motion picture previewed in Houston and then played at the Palace Theatre on Broadway from April 18, 1994–September 5, 1999, when it moved to the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, opening there November 12, 1999. With a cast of 31, it includes one Ashman-Menken song written for, but not used in, the film (“Human Again”) and several brand-new songs by Tim Rice and Alan Menken. The original Broadway cast starred Susan Egan (Belle), Terrence Mann (Beast), Tom Bosley (Maurice), Burke Moses (Gaston), Gary Beach (Lumiere), and Heath Lamberts (Cogsworth). The show received nine Tony nominations in 1994, which resulted in one award, to Ann Hould-Ward for the costumes. A new production of the show opened at the Shubert Theatre in Los Angeles March 21, 1995, and there were later road show engagements in theaters throughout the world. The last performance on Broadway was July 29, 2007, with a total of 5,464 performances and 46 previews. A Mandarin-language version of the show played in the Walt Disney Grand Theatre in Disneytown at Shanghai Disney Resort June 14, 2018–January 24, 2020. In December 2021, Japan’s Shiki Theater Company announced that a reimagined production, in association with Disney Theatrical Productions, would debut October 2022 in the Maihama Amphitheater at Tokyo Disney Resort.
