7 Ways Oogie Boogie is Casting His Spell Over Disney California Adventure This Halloween

By Jocelyn Buhlman

Halloween season at Disneyland is a celebration full of Mickey-shaped pumpkins, villains on parade, and delicious treats we can’t wait to eat. It’s enough to entice even the creepiest crawlies and spookiest specters—and maybe even a boogieman! Oogie Boogie has arrived to cast a new spell—one full of villainous fun. Oogie Boogie Bash—A Disney Halloween Party is the brand-new, separate-ticket event, held on 20 select nights, and it’s sure to thrill fans of Halloween and Disney villains alike. Tickets for the new Oogie Boogie Bash—A Disney Halloween Party* may be purchased online at Disneyland.com/HalloweenParty, as well as at the Disneyland Resort main gate and by phone at (714) 781-4636.

What exactly does our favorite boogieman have in store for us? Here are seven new things he’s concocted to take over Disney California Adventure:

1. Ghostly Good Magic Across the Carthay Circle
What’s this? New Halloween magic appears on the façade of Carthay Circle on Buena Vista Street, changing throughout the night as bats swarm, green energy pulses from within, and spellbinding moments transform the iconic tower structure. Show director Jordan Peterson hints at the transformations you might encounter: “You may see Maleficent’s vines grow up and start to crack the mortar of the building, see candy corn fill up the windows, or see the shadow of Oogie Boogie himself on the façade. What’s cool is that you’ll get to see how it changes as you go back and forth throughout the night.”

2. Explore the Mysterious Villains Grove
There is a portal inside Redwood Creek Challenge Trail where the Disney villains emerged to join our party, leaving behind traces of their magic in the grove. Peterson describes Villains Grove as a “hauntingly beautiful display of light and sound.”

Guests can explore areas of the grove affected by different Disney villains. Catch a glimpse of a waterfall turned poisonous green by Maleficent, or see the Queen of Heart’s garden filled with self-painting roses. Explore areas transformed by Scar, Frollo, Dr. Facilier, and more! Color, light, and sound craft the stories behind this enchanting realm. “It’s gonna transport our guests to a really different world,” Peterson explains. Fans of Disney villains will definitely want to explore this transformation of the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail.

Oogie Boogie Bash

3. A World of Villains
Exclusive to the Oogie Boogie Bash, the new World of Color show, Villainous!, shares the charming, yet spooky story of a young girl named Shelley Marie. Created by Disney animator Eric Goldberg, Shelley has a tough decision to make about her Halloween costume this year—luckily for her, the magic of Disney villains is here to help guide her decisions! Throughout this twisted tale, Shelley explores the villainous side of Disney characters through fountains, lights, lasers, projections, and special effects. Villainous! shows guests that, deep down, there’s a little villain in all of us.

4. Wickedly Immersive Treat Trails
Among the most beloved parts of Halloween at Disneyland are the treat trails, where guests can enjoy trick-or-treating with extra Disney magic! Now that Oogie Boogie is in charge of the celebration, Peterson explains, “Some of those have been handed over to the villains to control.” While you can still enjoy regular treat trails during the party, keep an eye out for the new, immersive treat trails throughout Disney California Adventure. It’s your chance to enjoy trick-or-treating under the watchful eyes of iconic Disney characters such as Dr. Facilier, Maleficent, and Oogie Boogie himself.

Each trail is transformed to match the villain. For example, Peterson describes Oogie Boogie’s trail as, “A world of blacklight, a world of really cool haze, and Oogie Boogie himself will sometimes preside over the festivities and goings-on as people collect their candy.”

It’s not just villains who have taken over the treat trails—keep an eye out for a special trail presided over by  Mad Hatter! While he’s not a villain, Peterson explains, “He is a huge fan of chaos—and he would never miss a party!”

Oogie Boogie Bash

5. While The Villains Are Away, the VK’s Will Play
Peterson poses an important question: “If the villains are all here, who’s watching their kids? And the answer was ‘nobody’… So they are going to throw a dance party!”

A portal has opened from the Isle of the Lost and our favorite VK’s sent over their best dance crew to teach us how to be chillin’ like a villain. The new DescenDANCE is a pulsing party in the Backlot area of Hollywood Land, inspired by the fan-favorite Descendants movie series from Disney Channel. This party combines the entertainment of a show with the interactivity of a dance party—which guarantees that there are so many ways to be wicked.

Oogie Boogie Bash

6. A Purr-fect Addition to the Frightfully Fun Parade
Making its debut in Disney California Adventure, the fan-favorite Frightfully Fun Parade is back, featuring classic spooky characters like The Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow, Jack Skellington, Haunted Mansion dancers, and many mischievous Disney villains who are ready to stir up some trouble along the parade route. Plus—make sure to stay till the end of the parade to see the ever-curious and whimsical Cheshire Cat mischievously smiling at all the magical mayhem. This is the first time ever the Cheshire Cat is appearing in the parade (which is definitely something worth smiling about!).

Oogie Boogie Bash

7. A Brand-New Show Starring Mickey!
This show, which Peterson describes as both “really cute” and “really adorable,” brings Mickey and friends together for a Halloween celebration perfect for the young and young at heart. He explains, “This one is really meant for that family element and anyone who loves characters.” Head over to the Disney Theater in Hollywood Land to check out the new, interactive stage production that includes dancing, not-so-frightening scary-tales, and (of course!) candy.

*The number of tickets available are limited and valid only for the specific event date and hours. Limit eight (8) tickets per person, per event date. Tickets not required for Guests ages 2 and under. Tickets are non-refundable and may not be resold or transferred for a commercial purpose. Costumes are subject to Disney guidelines and should not be obstructive or offensive; please check special event costume guidelines at https://disneyland.disney.go.com/faq/parks/dress for restrictions. Offer and event elements are subject to restrictions, change or cancellation without notice.

How to Have a Spooktacular Halloween at Disney Parks and Resorts around the World

By Zach Johnson

Let’s creep it real, guys and ghouls: There’s no better way to get into the Halloween spirit than by embracing the magic of Disney. This year, the delightful, frightful fun will begin two months before All Hallow’s Eve when the fan-favorite Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party returns to Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort on August 16. Read on to find out which other tricks and treats guests can experience from ghost to ghost—er, coast to coast—and around the world at Disney Parks and Resorts.

Disneyland Resort

From September 6 through October 31, Halloween magic will enchant guests in both parks. Get spirited away at Disneyland, where Main Street, U.S.A., will feature themed décor, including a giant Mickey Mouse jack-o’-lantern and Pumpkin Festival perfect for taking selfies. Inspired by the animated classic Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, Haunted Mansion—celebrating its 50th anniversary—will transform into its annual holiday theme: Haunted Mansion Holiday. And, for the first time in nearly a decade, every guest visiting Disneyland will get to enjoy a version of the supernatural projection and special effects show Halloween Screams. Hosted by Jack Skellington, this nighttime spectacular will add to the spooky fun of the season. On select nights, Halloween Screams will also go sky high with the addition of show-stopping fireworks.

Hallloween at Disney Parks

Over at Disney California Adventure park, Oogie Boogie’s oversized silhouette will summon guests through the main entrance. Bats will swarm the façade of Carthay Circle, as projections transform the tower structure with spellbinding moments. Guests will also find a 10-foot-tall statue of the Headless Horseman, from The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, holding his jack-o’-lantern head up high on Buena Vista Street.

The citizens of Cars Land will turn Radiator Springs into Radiator Screams. The entire land will be transformed with a Haul-O-Ween makeover as the townsfolk of Radiator Springs don costumes and decorate their respective homes for the season. Guests will encounter Lightning McQueen, Mater, Cruz, and Red in “car-stume” as they get ready to go “trunk-or-treating.” Popular Cars Land attractions transform as well: Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree will get spooky as Mater’s Graveyard JamBOOree, while Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters will get a seasonal twist to become Luigi’s Honkin’ Haul-O-Ween.

Hallloween at Disney Parks

Marvel fans will begin a daring adventure when Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! transforms nightly into Guardians of the Galaxy – Monsters After Dark. As the sun sets, the attraction’s exterior will go dark, only to suddenly power back up with lighting effects. Although the Guardians have successfully escaped The Collector’s Fortress, the team accidentally left Groot behind—and in the sensational seasonal overlay, guests will help Rocket distract the escaped creatures so he can rescue Groot.

The new Oogie Boogie Bash – A Disney Halloween Party, replacing Mickey’s Halloween Party, will start September 17 and run for 20 select nights at Disney California Adventure. Oogie Boogie will cast his spell and summon the Disney villains to scare up some thrilling surprises. 5 Important Things You Need to Pack for D23 Expo 2019

By Savannah Salazar

Time is flying by because D23 Expo is only a few weeks away! In preparation for the ultimate Disney fan event, follow our five key things to start packing (in perhaps a wonderful Disney luggage piece from American Tourister).

1. Let’s Start with the Essentials…
For no worries for the rest of your D23 Expo planning, be sure to activate and pack your D23 Expo badge as soon as it arrives. Badges will begin to ship on August 5. Plus, if you are a D23 Gold Member, make sure you bring your Gold Member card as well.  2. Strut that Disney Style
Mickey Mouse’s bright red shorts. Minnie’s polka dot dress. Donald Duck’s timeless sailor outfit. What do these all have in common? They’re all iconic Disney fashion, and D23 Expo is the perfect place to strut your own fan-tastic Disney looks. Whether you’re designing your own Disney creations, putting together an enchanting Disneybound, or just casually repping your favorite hero from a galaxy far, far away, don’t forget to pack your favorite Disney clothes. For those of you bringing your Disney cosplay creations, get photo ready for the first-ever official D23 Expo cosplay photo shoot!

3. Zero to Hundred Percent Charge
Let’s face it. Cellphones are a part of our world, so bringing a portable charger to D23 Expo is a must. You’ll want your phone to be fully charged at all times to keep up on everything going on from panels and surprises, photo opportunities, social media and keeping in touch with your friends and family.

4. Leave Behind the Glass Slipper
As much as we all love a beautiful glass slipper, it’s almost a guarantee you will be walking a lot around the Anaheim Convention Center. Bring a comfortable pair of shoes to enjoy exploring everything D23 Expo has to offer, and avoid those poor unfortunate soles.

5. And a Bag with Character for Whozits and Whazits Galore
Badge? Check. Shoes? Check. Charger? Check. Now, where to put all of that? Bringing a bag to the floor will help you carry all of the incredible swag, collectibles, exclusive merchandise and souvenirs you’ll be able to get throughout D23 Expo. You can even get this Minnie Mouse-themed luggage set from American Tourister that can hold all your Disney goodies!

5 Super-Powered Facts About Sky High You Might Not Know

By Jocelyn Buhlman

We’ve all dreamed about being superheroes, but have you ever thought about what it takes to be one? Sky High, the 2005 film following the adventures of teens at a school for the super-powered, set out to show us just what it takes to become a world-saving legend. Grab your cape and get ready to fly off into these five facts about this fan-favorite Disney film.

Sky High

1. Sky High was the second time Kurt Russell portrayed a super strong Disney character.
Disney Legend Kurt Russell began his long career with The Walt Disney Company when he was just 15 years old, starring in his first Disney film, Follow Me, Boys! Having such a long history with Disney, it’s no surprise that Sky High wasn’t his first time flexing his heroic muscles. Before playing the super strong Steve Stronghold (a.k.a The Commander) in Sky High, Russell played college student Dexter Riley—who gains super strength through a science experiment gone wrong—in The Strongest Man in the World!

Sky High

2. Two of the films’ writers know all about teens saving the world.
If we asked you to name a story about a world-saving teen trying to make it through the day-to-day struggle of high school, would you say Sky High? Or would you think about a certain classic Disney Channel series about a girl who can do it all? It only makes sense that screenwriters Robert Schooley and Mark McCorkle had a hand in both stories! Before teaming up with Paul Hernandez to write Sky High, Schooley and McCorkle created the Disney Channel original series Kim Possible, following the life of high school girl who fights crime in her spare time. Clearly, they were a natural fit for crafting the world of Sky High!

Sky High

3. The film is star-studded with nerdy cameos.
A big comic book fan himself, screenwriter Paul Hernandez wanted to fill the film with cameos from iconic stars from the worlds of comics and science fiction. Actors like Bruce Campbell, Kurt Russell, and Cloris Leachman are all notable for their roles in sci-fi and comic book-inspired stories, but perhaps the most iconic cameo is Lynda Carter as Principal Powers. Before she was running Sky High, Carter was best known to the world as TV’s Wonder Woman. Of her Sky High character, Carter explains, “I really like to play against what is expected, so I didn’t want to act like a typical principal. These super-kids are not easy to deal with, so [directors] Mike and Andrew really liked the idea of having her be this real intimidating force of nature that the kids can’t help but respond to.”

Sky High

4. The creative team faced a challenge in costuming.
While modern superheroes are known for their iconic costumes, most high school kids don’t have access to that kind of super-powered wardrobe. For the students of Sky High, the creative team wanted to showcase the students’ individual sense of style with a comic book twist.  “With each of the kids, I tried to hint, in a witty way, at their superpowers and their personalities,” explains costume designer Mike Wilkinson. “So we did two things—first, we used color to delineate each character and then we used the idea of archetypes to really give the costumes some punch. For example, Will was thought of a classic all-American, Layla is a bohemian hippy, Zach is a clown, Magenta is the Goth girl, and Ethan is nerdy/preppy.” Each character’s costume is as iconic and bright as a comics character—while still dressing them like a normal teenager.

Sky High

5. The film focused on practical effects over CGI.
Continuing with the old-school inspiration, director Mike Mitchell decided to rely on innovative, old-school in-camera tricks and physical stunts utilizing wires, harnesses, and cleverly engineered sets to replicate a nostalgic, action-movie feeling. “Because we wanted to hearken back to a kind of ‘60s comic book style in the film’s look, we need a more low-tech approach mixed in with the latest cutting-edge techniques,” he said.

Inside Disney’s Re-Imagined The Lion King: 7 Facts We’re Not ‘Lion’ About

By William Keck

For several years, the genius filmmakers behind this summer’s The Lion King created and fine-tuned the most minute of details with the common goal of leaving audiences so mesmerized by the moving story and spectacle on screen that they wouldn’t be distracted or even notice them. But they’re there, to be sure. And now the film’s producer/director Jon Favreau and some of his production team explain how his talented team went about creating a masterpiece with all the photorealism of a Disneynature documentary, combined with the deep emotions, fears, and humor we’ve come to expect from a Disney classic.

1. MORE TO SEE THAN CAN EVER BE SEEN
Even though you may be watching The Lion King in a theater, you’ll probably get a sense that you’ve landed in the middle of an African desert or savanna. And there’s a good reason for that. Prior to the start of production, the filmmakers embarked on a safari field trip to Kenya to study the behaviors of real lions, observing over two weeks how the wild creatures interacted while taking hundreds of thousands of photographs. “I’d only seen these animals in zoos,” recalls Animation Supervisor Andy Jones, who found the opportunity invaluable to “really see them in their own environment and get a feel for how they roam around each other. Every time they come up (to each other) they touch heads and they do a greeting and then move on, even the cubs do it. They learn at a young age. It’s a really nice kind of family culture.” The film’s director, Jon Favreau, also had Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park in Orlando at his disposal whenever he needed to further observe the animals his team was animating. “We can go down there without interfering with them… and they don’t even know we’re there, hopefully.”

The Lion King

2. TRUTH IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER
Believing in the old adage “the eyes are the window to the soul,” the filmmakers paid extra attention to each character’s eyelids, pupils, irises, and sclera. Visual Effects Supervisor Adam Valdez says, “The classic example is the top lid. If the top lid gets near the pupil you look sleepy.” Another pitfall Valdez avoided was having any of the characters exhibit something he calls the dreaded “doll eye,” because “we all think dolls are creepy.” (Our sincerest apologies to Toy Story 4’s Gabby Gabby.) For Valdez, that meant focusing his own eyes on how the light first penetrates the eye before scattering and coming back out. He equates the phenomenon to the way light moves through water. “When you get it right,” he says, “the eye is engaging, and it’s inviting and it communicates.”

3. READ MY LIPS
One of the biggest challenges facing the filmmakers was making the animals speak and sing, realistically, considering… well, animals don’t speak or sing. Although, don’t tell that to Visual Effects Supervisor Rob Legato, who believes “animals talking is not that extraordinary. A parrot talks, you know. An animal does talk.” (Just visit the Enchanted Tiki Room for proof!) While that may be true, they typically don’t speak in full sentences and belt lyrics to pop songs penned by Disney Legend Elton John. Jones, who’d worked with Favreau on The Jungle Book live-action retelling, says the approach they took for the speaking animals was to make sure that facial movement stayed true to how that particular animal’s mouth would really move. “We definitely tried hard to make it limited to the real physicality of the mouth,” stressing that Favreau was insistent that the animals’ lips not come off as too perfectly precise when reciting words, as has been the case in certain CG productions. “Jon hates that, because he feels that you’re staring at the mouth instead of just enjoying the performance.” Aware of similar frustrations Walt Disney faced when he was animating the characters in Bambi soon after the studio’s completion of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Favreau had already worked through some of these issues when helming The Jungle Book. “We found certain animals were easier than others,” Favreau recalls. “The wolves were hard, the bears were hard, I think because they had big snouts.” Favreau realized he got lucky in that two of the film’s show-stopping songs—“The Circle of Life” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”—are just part of the score, not sung by characters on screen. And two of the main songs the characters do sing on camera—“I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” and “Hakuna Matata”—are both more whimsical in nature, which gave Favreau license to be just a bit freer.

The Lion King

4. EVERYTHING THE LIGHT TOUCHES IN OUR KINGDOM
Having worked on many of the Marvel Super Hero films, Favreau is more accustomed to cutting-edge special effects technology being applied to explosions or fight scenes in space. So getting to apply these techniques to the smaller nuances in The Lion King proved especially satisfying.  “I’m a fan of those [large-scale action] movies, too,” says Favreau, “but it is nice to be able to be in this part of the garden where we can say, ‘Hey let’s really look at what a leaf looks like or the way water moves, or the way wind blows grass, and create, just really beautiful arresting images.’” The small touches were, of course, also applied to details on the individual animal characters. “It could be how muscle moves,” Valdez explains. “How skin moves and then how wind affects the fur. It can be how animals interact with plants, wind forces, fire, water, and smoke.” And by digitally recreating an animal’s skeleton (something audiences will never even see), Virtual Production Supervisor Ben Grossman says it helped the filmmakers give a character like Scar a limp, or a shiftier stance.

The Lion King

5. THE CIRCLE OF LAUGHS
While it’s become customary for most animated films to record their voice talents individually—sometimes remotely from countries far away from one another—Favreau felt it necessary to assemble his actors in one room to record how they interacted from different angles as an added tool for his animators to draw from. His process involved clearing out a soundproof room, with different groupings of actors standing without their scripts in hand performing to each other at microphones. Relating these sessions to “radio plays,” Favreau encouraged the voice talent to freely riff off one another and improvise at will, just as he’d previously done with Iron Man actors Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow. “We’re trying to create a naturalism with the scenes between the characters,” explains Favreau, who gained inspiration from old recorded footage of the late Robin Williams voicing the animated Genie in Disney’s original Aladdin. “The physicality that comes from it inspires [character performance] decisions. Because we find that as good as the animator is, they come from an animation tradition and make different acting choices. Eye contact patterns, status relationships, all of that comes through when you have two actors performing together. It’s important to see when they make eye contact, when they break it, who cuts who off in the dialogue.” Adds Legato, “That chemistry creates a much more lifelike thing. Particularly enjoyable for Andy Jones was watching Seth Rogen (Pumbaa) and Billy Eichner’s (Timon) improv-heavy recording sessions. “It created some interesting takes that the writers hadn’t thought about,” he says.

With their busy schedules, not every actor was available for every group session. Beyoncé, for instance, proved “logistically trickier than some of the other cast members,” says Favreau. “She’s a busy person, she has babies, she has albums, she goes on tour, her husband goes on tour.” But to no one’s surprise, Queen Bey made everyone feel the love tonight, and gave this 2019 Nala all the playfulness and power they’d intended.

The Lion King

6. LOOK BEYOND WHAT YOU SEE
The film’s sets are computer-generated, and virtual technology has advanced to such a degree that allowed Favreau and his crew to wear goggles and VR headsets and enter different scenes as if they were really there. Inside the VR worlds, they were even able to move images around. “We could shrink everything down so we could look at it like a model, and make ourselves tiny,” says Favreau of this groundbreaking Honey I Shrunk the Kids-like technology. “So we could go through little tunnels and stuff (with) the cubs and hyenas. If we think there are too many hyenas in a screen we could move them as chess pieces.” Trippy, right?

Producer John Bartnicki explains the creation of these VR worlds began with the gorgeous stills taken while scouting in Kenya that were then handed over to the virtual art departments to build sets on their computers.  “So, you can actually walk on the savanna,” says Bartnicki, “or go up to Pride Rock.” Adds producer Tom Peitzman, “You literally can put the goggles on and then you can be in the Pride Lands,” recalling how funny it looked seeing all of these adult artists in their headgear waving little wands at each other like sorcerers. “They would point with their lasers and say, ‘Come on over here,’ and they all go to that spot.” Many of the actors also had a chance to put on the goggles and enter the virtual Pride Lands. And producer Karen Gilchrist says, “they had quite a fun time with it!”

The Lion King

7. A BONE TO PICK
When production designer James Chinlund showed a rough concept of the film’s elephant graveyard location to his 12-year-old daughter, her advice to dad was to add more bones. Lots more bones, because that’s how she remembered the hyenas’ ominous hideout from the animated classic. But Chinlund knew that particular location where the animated cubs slid down larger-than-life tusks as if in a prehistoric playground, wouldn’t look realistic with the documentary- style approach they were taking. “If we literally provided these huge bones and all this stuff like it was in the animated film I think you’d be pulled out… I mean it wouldn’t feel real,” Chinlund explains. As a sinister alternative, Chinlund drew inspiration from a real lake in Ethiopia called Lake Abhe Bad, to create a sort of nightmarish sulfur hot spring pool area, where over time, elephants and other animals had become trapped. “Sort of like the [La Brea] tar pits,” explains Chinlund. “So you’ll see a lot of bones and the hyenas have decided to occupy this part of the world because as scavengers there’s good pickings out there.” Of course even though Chinlund found a way to adhere to their documentary-style rules, he didn’t ignore his youngest critic. “I listened to her and added more bones,” he shrugs. “Yeah, she’s the boss.”

5 Times Tom Hanks was Part of an Iconic Disney Duo

By Beth Deitchman

Thirty years ago today, officer Scott Turner found himself paired with an unlikely new partner—a strong and silent type, with a tendency to drool—in Turner and Hooch, Touchstone’s 1989 action-comedy about an affable detective and a massive, messy, ill-mannered dog. Tom Hanks starred as the human member of this mismatched pair; he shared the screen with the charismatic Beasley, a Dogue de Bordeaux—a breed regarded by the American Kennel Club as “of considerable courage,” not to mention “famously loyal, affectionate, and protective.” We were immediately smitten with the slobbery pooch,  but it took a little longer for Scott to overlook some of Hooch’s quirks, which included chewing on furniture and barking all night. And did we mention the drool?

Turner and Hooch

As Hooch proved himself to be both crack crimefighter and man’s best friend in every sense of the word, he won his way into Scott’s heart. Their bumpy road to friendship was a ride that still delights us 30 years later—and Turner and Hooch are just one of several beloved Disney duos to feature beloved actor Tom Hanks. Here are some of our other favorites:

Splash (1984)—Allen and Madison
Five years before Turner and Hooch, Touchstone released its first feature, Splash, which starred Hanks as Allen, a purveyor of produce in New York City, and Daryl Hannah as Madison, a woman unlike anyone Allen has ever encountered—in no small part because she’s a mermaid. The couple has a fin-tastic connection: They meet briefly as children and reconnect as adults when the mermaid saves Allen from nearly drowning in Cape Cod. Madison, whose tail gives way to legs when she’s on land, follows Allen back to New York where they fall in love over “six fun-filled days” and where the mermaid famously takes inspiration from a street sign when it comes to choosing a human name for herself. Their wildly different backgrounds aren’t the only obstacles that threaten to keep Allen and Madison apart. They also have to contend with scientists who are determined to study the mermaid. “All my life, I’ve been waiting for someone, and when I find her, she’s a fish,” says Allen, of this star-crossed romance.

Toy Story

Toy Story (1995)—Woody and Buzz
“This town ain’t big enough for the two of us.” It’s one of the catchphrases heard throughout the Toy Story movies from everyone’s favorite cowboy, Woody (voiced by Hanks), and lucky for us, Andy’s room was more than big enough for a toyful twosome. Woody and Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Tim Allen) couldn’t have been more opposite when they met: Woody was a soft, huggable pull-string toy, a sheriff out to stop varmints from poisoning the water hole and other nefarious deeds, with a trusty horse that was ready to be summoned at a second’s notice. In the beginning, Buzz couldn’t conceive of himself as a toy. Rather, he was a space ranger on a mission to protect the galaxy from the evil Emperor Zurg, armed with a blaster, the ability to fly, and super-cool sound effects. But nothing brings together playthings like a shared love for their kid. Woody and Buzz’s rivalry evolved into a close friendship that will endure “to infinity and beyond.”

Saving Mr. Banks

Saving Mr. Banks (2013)—Walt Disney and P.L. Travers
There’s so much Disney magic to be found on screen in the 1964 film Mary Poppins that it’s surprising to think that Walt Disney and P.L. Travers didn’t see eye to eye on the film from the outset. Walt Disney, as played by Tom Hanks in Saving Mr. Banks, spent years pursuing the rights to P.L. Travers’ book. The curmudgeonly author was just as determined to avoid seeing her beloved nanny co-opted by a Hollywood production. The stunning 2013 film goes behind the scenes on the Burbank Studio lot—and also features a pivotal trip to Disneyland for Walt and Travers—as the two talented creators come to discover that they may have more in common than they realize. “George Banks and all he stands for will be saved,” says Walt, in his effort to persuade Travers to entrust him with Mary Poppins. “Maybe not in life, but in imagination. Because that’s what we storytellers do. We restore order with imagination. We instill hope again and again and again.”

Toy Story 4

Toy Story 4 (2019)—Woody and Bo Peep
The newest Toy Story adventure has given us one of our new favorite pairings: Woody and “the toy that got away,” Bo Peep. For years, Bo was right down the hall in Andy’s house, in charge of the toys in Molly’s room and part of a treasured lamp that provided comfort and reassurance to Andy’s sister at bedtime… until Molly outgrew her fear of the dark, and the lamp and Bo were cast aside. When chance brings Bo back into Woody’s life, both toys are struck to realize how much they’ve missed each other while their journeys have taken them on divergent paths. Bo has embraced life as “a lost toy” and has taken control of her own destiny, while Woody has stayed faithful to what he believes to be a toy’s true purpose: loving and supporting a kid. “You can’t teach this old toy new tricks,” says Woody to Bo in Toy Story 4. See the film, in theaters now, to find out for yourself whether that’s truly the case.
