Did You Spot These Details and Easter Eggs in The Book of Boba Fett?

By Jocelyn Buhlman

WARNING: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR ALL EPISODES OF THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT

The final chapter of The Book of Boba Fett made its Disney+ debut last week—but that doesn’t mean we need to leave the action-packed world of the series just yet. As The Book of Boba Fett follows Fett’s return to the sands of Tatooine, each episode hides familiar details, and Easter eggs abound for any Star Wars fan with a keen eye. During your rewatch of the series, here are some of our favorites for you to find:

The Book of Boba Fett

The Droids You’re Looking For
This is no Jedi mind trick! Throughout the series, sharp-eyed Star Wars fans could spot some familiar droids making cameo appearances. Keep an eye out for a card dealing RX-Series droid similar to our favorite DJ/Star Tours pilot at Sanctuary in Chapter 1, “Stranger in a Strange Land.” Also in Chapter 1, Boba Fett enlists the droid 8D8 as his translator—a much more innocent job than his previous gig, torturing droids in Jabba’s Palace during Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.

Chapter 5 gives us an update on another famous droid from the Star Wars original trilogy. R5-D4 first appeared in Star Wars: A New Hope, where he was almost sold to Uncle Owen and Luke Skywalker—until his motivator exploded and the fate of the galaxy was changed forever. Now, it seems that R5 has made his home in Peli Motto’s shop, where you can spot him rolling by, still with a hole in his head from his broken motivator.

The Book of Boba Fett

A Familiar Face with an Alien Appearance
Robert Rodriguez, executive producer and director of multiple Book of Boba Fett episodes, makes a cameo appearance in Chapter 1—although you might have a hard time spotting him, since he’s portraying an alien! As Dokk Strassi, Rodriguez takes on the role of the leader of the Trandoshan family who once worked for Jabba the Hutt. If you’ve got a sharp ear, you may also recognize him as the voice of Mok Shaiz, the Ithorian Mayor of Mos Espa.

The Coolest Musical Collaboration in the Galaxy
Star Wars fans around the world rejoiced when watching Chapter 1, where they discovered that fan-favorite character Max Rebo had survived the events of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. For those of you unfamiliar with the blue, elephant-like musician, Rebo is the leader of the Max Rebo Band, Jabba the Hutt’s in-house ensemble who performed live music and won the hearts of Star Wars fans everywhere. Rebo is now working at Sanctuary, where he lays down tunes with a Bith musician who might have been part of another iconic Star Wars musical group. We first spotted a group of musical Biths in A New Hope, where the band Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes performed perhaps the most iconic tune in the galaxy, called “Mad About You” in-universe and known to us earthlings as “Cantina Band.” At Sanctuary, Rebo and the Bith riff on that iconic tune, continuing to provide the best jams in all the galaxy.

How Rude!
The Star Wars franchise has provided us with a lot of creative insults (“scruffy-looking nerf herder” is a fan-favorite)—and, naturally, in a galaxy far, far away, not every insult is going to be one we understand. In Chapter 2, “The Tribes of Tatooine,” a captured assassin is asked for his last words and rudely says, “Echuta!” Well, at least we think he’s saying it rudely. We don’t really know what the word means, but the last time we heard it was in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, when another protocol droid says the word to C-3PO, and he responds, “How rude!” Whatever the word means, we advise against using it—after all, the rude assassin got thrown into the Rancor pit!

The Book of Boba Fett

Okay, But Where Do We Get Those Power Converters?
In The Book of Boba Fett, we revisit many iconic Tatooine locations, from Jabba’s Palace to Beggar’s Canyon to… Tosche Station?! The location made famous by Luke Skywalker’s desire to go “to Tosche Station to pick up some power converters,” was never actually visited on-screen in Star Wars: A New Hope, so the first time we get to visit the station is in Chapter 2 of The Book of Boba Fett.

Savvy Star Wars fans might already know that we actually were supposed to see Tosche Station in A New Hope, thanks to a deleted scene where Luke goes to the station and visits his friends, Biggs Darklighter, Camie, and Fixer. While Darklighter did make it into the final edit of A New Hope, Camie and Fixer were left on the cutting room floor—until now, that is! You can spot them still hanging out in Tosche Station during Boba’s visit.

Return to Return of the Jedi
Those of us who spent a large amount of our childhoods watching Return of the Jedi may have spotted a familiar shot in Chapter 3, “The Streets of Mos Espa.” A nighttime shot outside of Jabba’s palace shows a Worrt using its toad-like tongue to catch and eat some local critters; an extremely similar shot appears in Return of the Jedi, during the setting of Tatooine’s twin suns.

That’s not the only shoutout to Return of the Jedi. During Chapter 3’s epic chase through Mos Espa, some workers with terrible timing carry a painting into the path of the fray. The soon-to-be-ripped-in-half painting is actually concept art of Jabba’s palace created for Return of the Jedi by legendary artist Ralph McQuarrie. Don’t worry—it wasn’t the original.

Just Like Beggars Canyon Back Home
Having spent his childhood on Tatooine, Luke Skywalker built the skills he needed to eventually take down the dreaded Death Star by shooting womp rats in Beggar’s Canyon. He is met with some apprehension when he explains his experience to his fellow Rebel Alliance pilots—but, of course, in Star Wars: A New Hope, he’s able to save the day thanks to his skills. As a shout-out to Luke’s experience bullseyeing womp rats, keep an eye out during Chapter 5 when the Mandalorian tests his ship in Beggar’s Canyon—you might spot one of those womp rats for yourself!

Meet the New Characters of The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder

By Zach Johnson

We’re one week away from the premiere of The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder on Disney+—and from meeting the newest residents of Smithville! The highly anticipated animated series follows the adventures and misadventures of Penny Proud (voiced by Kyla Pratt) and her family and friends as they navigate modern life with hilarity and heart. New to the neighborhood are siblings Maya Leibowitz-Jenkins and KG Leibowitz-Jenkins, who not only have to deal with the struggles of being the new kids but also having two fathers—a first for Smithville.

Before the series premieres, allow us to introduce you to the Leibowitz-Jenkins clan.

Maya Leibowitz-Jenkins (voiced by Keke Palmer)
Maya is a 14-year-old activist who marches to the beat of her own drum. She is extremely mature for her age and never hesitates to shut anyone down with her honesty and wisdom. Maya is skeptical of social cliques and initially disassociates herself from Penny and her crew.

Francis ‘KG’ Leibowitz-Jenkins (voiced by Artist “A Boogie” Dubose)
KG is a big gamer; in fact, it’s rare to see him without his console in hand. Unlike Maya, he instantly becomes part of the popular in-crowd at school because of his nonchalant persona and never-ending usage of the word “sheeeesh.”

Randall Leibowitz-Jenkins (voiced by Billy Porter)
Randall is a 40-year-old, tailored suit-wearing banker and the self-proclaimed “brother in charge” at Wizard Kelly Bank. He’s a sharp-tongued intellectual and dedicated foodie. He works overtime to keep up with his kids, but, most importantly, he encourages them to be who they need to be.

Barry Leibowitz-Jenkins (voiced by Zachary Quinto)
Warm and strong, Barry is a devoted husband to Randall and father to Maya and KG. He is a late ’30s detective with an infectious laugh. Big and athletic, when he slaps Oscar on his back he sends him flying for miles.

The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder is executive produced by Bruce W. Smith and Ralph Farquhar, both of whom led the original Disney Channel series The Proud Family (2001-2005). Stay tuned for more The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder content leading up to the premiere!

Introducing Storyliving by Disney, a Residential Community Infused with Extra Magic

By the D23 Team

As Disney fans, we all want to spend as much time in the worlds of Disney as possible—and soon, there will be a whole new way to live a life full of Disney magic. The Walt Disney Company announced today plans to introduce Storyliving by Disney, vibrant new neighborhoods that are infused with the company’s special brand of magic. These master-planned communities are intended to inspire residents to foster new friendships, pursue their interests, and write the next exciting chapter in their lives—all while enjoying the attention to detail, unique amenities, and special touches that are Disney hallmarks.

“For nearly 100 years, Disney has shared stories that have touched the hearts and minds of people all around the world,” said Josh D’Amaro, chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. “As we prepare to enter our second century, we are developing new and exciting ways to bring the magic of Disney to people wherever they are, expanding storytelling to storyliving. We can’t wait to welcome residents to these beautiful and unique Disney communities where they can live their lives to the fullest.”

Disney Cast Members have brightened our days at countless Disney Parks adventures, and that special brand of magic will extend to Storyliving by Disney. At each location, including neighborhoods for residents ages 55+, Disney Cast Members trained in the company’s legendary guest service will operate the community association. Through a club membership, Disney will also provide access to curated experiences, such as wellness programming, entertainment ranging from live performances to cooking classes, philanthropic endeavors, seminars, and much more.

Naturally, all this Disney magic is being created with Disney Imagineers in a key role of creative development, working in conjunction with respected developers and homebuilders. “Disney Imagineers are exploring the richness of each local region to inspire the theme of Storyliving by Disney communities,” said Michael Hundgen, executive producer, Walt Disney Imagineering. “Distinctively designed indoor and outdoor spaces will offer residents new opportunities to explore, engage, and create the next incredible chapter of their story.”

Announcing Cotino, a Storyliving by Disney community

If you’re already packing your bags for a Storyliving by Disney community, make sure to circle California on your map! The first Storyliving by Disney community will be built in Rancho Mirage, in California’s Coachella Valley—a location where Walt Disney himself owned a home and would spend leisure time with his family. Additional locations in the U.S. are under exploration for future development.

Recreational area of Cotino™ a Storyliving by Disney™ community

Where better to plant the first stake in the ground for a Storyliving by Disney community than an area that once felt the footsteps of Walt Disney himself? Walt and Lillian Disney escaped to the heart of the Greater Palm Springs area to enjoy a rejuvenating retreat—and soon Disney fans can enjoy the same experience at Cotino, a Storyliving by Disney community. Architecture and amenities of this Storyliving by Disney community will reflect the history and present-day inspiration of the rich valley culture.

Cotino is being developed in collaboration with DMB Development, which is highly regarded for its development of large-scale planned communities in the U.S. According to Brent Herrington, the company’s CEO, “Cotino represents the creativity and operational excellence of Disney combined with the extensive community development expertise of DMB Development. We are delighted to collaborate with Disney in this groundbreaking new concept.”

Cotino will welcome homeowners of all ages and will include at least one section expressly for 55+ residents. Home buyers will have a range of home types to choose from, including estates, single family homes, and condominiums.

Per the Specific Plan approval for the development, the community is expected to surround an approximately 24-acre grand oasis featuring clear turquoise waters with Crystal Lagoons® technology, enabling crystalline lagoons of any size to be built sustainably, with low water consumption and using a minimum amount of additives and energy. A voluntary club membership will offer access to a waterfront clubhouse, a club-only beach area and recreational water activities, as well as Disney programming, entertainment, and activities throughout the year.

Town Center of Cotino™ a Storyliving by Disney™ community

Cotino also has Specific Plan approval for a vibrant mixed-use district featuring a range of shopping, dining and entertainment, a beachfront hotel, and a professionally managed beach park with recreational water activities that can be accessed by the public through the purchase of a day pass.

Beyond Infinity with New Lightyear Trailer—Plus More in News Briefs

By Courtney Potter

Disney and Pixar’s Lightyear: New Trailer Launched!

It’s the definitive origin story of a beloved Toy Story favorite—and it’s coming to theaters this summer! Disney and Pixar’s Lightyear follows the legendary Space Ranger—the hero that inspired the toy—on a thrilling intergalactic adventure. Check out the trailer (for the first or 81st time), above.

“Buzz’s world was always something I was excited about,” director Angus MacLane recently said. “In Toy Story, there seemed to be this incredible backstory to him being a Space Ranger that’s only touched upon, and I always wanted to explore that world further. So, my Lightyear pitch was, ‘What was the movie that Andy saw that made him want a Buzz Lightyear toy?’ I wanted to see that movie. And now I’m lucky enough to get to make it.”

Joining the previously announced Chris Evans, who lends his voice to Buzz, are Keke Palmer, Dale Soules, and Taika Waititi as a group of ambitious recruits; Peter Sohn as Buzz’s robot companion, Sox; and the voices of Uzo Aduba, James Brolin, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez, and Isiah Whitlock Jr. Plus, Oscar®-winning composer Michael Giacchino—who has a storied history with Pixar—is on board to score the film.

Lightyear is set to release on June 17!

Questlove, a friend of D23, made his filmmaking debut with this powerful and transporting documentary—part music film, part historical record—created around an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture, and fashion. Over the course of six weeks in summer 1969, just 100 miles south of Woodstock, The Harlem Cultural Festival was filmed in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park). Hulu Announces Upcoming Futurama Revival

Attention, irreverent animation fans: a favorite series will soon be back! Earlier this week, 20th Television Animation and Hulu announced the return of Matt Groening and David X. The show’s returning voice cast includes Billy West, Katey Sagal, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, Lauren Tom, Phil LaMarr, and David Herman.

“I’m thrilled to have another chance to think about the future… or really anything other than the present,” joked Cohen. Added Groening, “It’s a true honor to announce the triumphant return of Futurama one more time before we get canceled abruptly again.”

Futurama focuses on the life of Philip Fry (voice of West)—a 25-year-old pizza delivery boy who accidentally froze himself on December 31, 1999, and woke up 1,000 years later with a fresh start at life and a “diverse” new group of friends, including Leela (voice of Sagal), a tough but lovely one-eyed alien, and Bender, a robot who possesses human characteristics and flaws. The series originally debuted in ’99, and over its seven seasons spanning two decades, 140 original episodes were produced—with the then-final episode airing on September 4, 2013.

Keep your eye(s) peeled for more info in the coming months.
