The final chapters of ABC’s Once Upon A Time have been written, and fans will finally learn the fates of all their favorite fairytale characters in the two-part series finale airing Friday, May 11, and Friday, May 18 at 8 p.m. ET/7p.m. CT. Everyone in the D23 community should be overjoyed to know that series creators and executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz crafted the big send-off with us Disney fans in mind!

And here’s a D23 exclusive: Keep an eye out for a very familiar pixie waving her wand in front of a very familiar castle. This, of course, is a nod to the iconic opening credits sequence of the long-running TV series The Wonderful World of Disney, where Tinker Bell uses her wand to create a fabulous fireworks display in front of Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle.
The primary objective of the finale, Horowitz says, was “to capture that hope and optimism that Disney movies have always brought.”

The star-studded finale features appearances from virtually all of the best-loved fairy tale characters who have passed through the fictional Storybrooke and the Enchanted Forest over the past seven fanciful seasons. “It’s going to be really magical to see all these characters come in and fight a common cause together,” teases the show’s Cinderella, actress Dania Ramirez. “When am I ever again going to be able to say that I got to work with my grandmother-in-law Snow White?”

Executive producer David Goodman believes it’s not a stretch to compare Once’s finale to Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War, in that the show’s greatest heroes are uniting to take down the biggest baddie they have ever seen—that being “Robert Carlyle as the crazy, gold-spinning Rumple, who we haven’t seen in a while,” says Goodman.
Expect happily-ever-after reunions for all the favorite couples: Snow and Charming, Belle and Mr. Gold, Hook and Emma, Alice and Robin. Plus, we’ll see the return of such long-absent Storybrooke favorites as Grumpy, Geppetto, Jiminy Cricket, the Blue Fairy, and even Ariel, the Little Mermaid, played by Joanna Garcia Swisher. “I have the ability to swim through realms,” reminds Garcia Swisher. “So when she’s called for help, she’s there!”

“Everything does come to a beautiful, happy ending,” assures Lana Parrilla, whose Evil Queen has seen a considerable softening of the heart as the seasons progressed. “We will not disappoint. Having the old gang back put the biggest smile on my face. It felt like they never left. When I first saw Ginny [Goodwin, who plays Snow White] and Josh [Dallas, Prince Charming] back on set I ran off the stage and took both in my arms because I hadn’t seen them in so long.”
Kitsis and Horowitz say the return of their Snow White and Charming in the final hour of the May 18 episode gave them chills. And they expect fans to have a similar reaction. “They have my favorite dramatic entrance since we met Lana Parrilla’s Evil Queen in the pilot,” says Kitsis, with Horowitz adding, “We’ve watched this moment probably a hundred times and we clap every single time.”
While working on their series’ swan song, the creative duo took into consideration what they learned from working on their last series finale: the much-hyped and polarizing 2010 final episode of Lost. “We learned to trust your instincts and follow your heart and vision,” explains Kitsis. “The thing I loved most about the Lost finale was that it was about the characters and their journey. And I think we did the same for our show. We want the fans to love it, of course, but we ourselves have to leave it knowing we did what we wanted.”
