5 Behind-the-Scenes Stories From High School Musical: The Musical: The Series

By Zach Johnson

It’s the start of something new, Wildcats! The Disney+ original scripted series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is set to debut at launch on November 12. With meta references and some docu-style elements, it follows students as they count down to the opening night of their school’s first-ever production of High School Musical.

From creator and executive producer Tim Federle, the 10-episode series stars Joshua Bassett as Ricky, Olivia Rodrigo as Nini, Matt Cornett as E.J., Sofia Wylie as Gina, Julia Lester as Ashlyn, Larry Saperstein as Big Red, Dara Reneé as Kourtney, Frankie A. Rodriguez as Carlos, Kate Reinders as Ms. Jenn, and Mark St. Cyr as Mr. Mazzara. Before the first episode airs on ABC, Disney Channel, and Freeform on November 8 at 8 p.m. ET before its Disney+ debut, enjoy five behind-the-scenes stories from the cast!

HSMTMTS Wylie

1. Wylie is a lifelong High School Musical fan. “When I was around 5 years old, there was this contest at my local mall: You had to walk across a red carpet and you could win tickets for your whole family to fly out to L.A. and be a part of the High School Musical 3 premiere,” she says. “Somehow, 5-year-old Sofia walked across this carpet and won for her whole family—which is so strange! I have pictures, actually, of my family and me at the premiere. I was so excited! I still am excited to this day just thinking about it! Now, 10 years later, it’s weird to think I’m able to be part of this amazing show.”

2. Reneé was so impressive she was promoted early. “I was only supposed to be in one episode,” she reveals. “Then, Tim was like, ‘We’re going to keep you around…’ I was like, ‘Thank you!’ I’m so just so grateful.” According to Federle, the decision was a no-brainer: “Someone like Dara Reneé, who walked in and was going to play a one-episode sidekick, brought so much to the table that I had to make her a series regular.”

3. Many of the actors inspired storylines for their characters. In one example, Federle recalls how Rodriguez had auditioned with a song from Aladdin but “knew he had something else” to offer. “I was like, ‘Is there anything else that’s going to speak to a deeper place?’ And he was like, ‘Well, I have Whitney Houston.’ He sang ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ and it literally inspired an entire arc in the series. It’s one of my favorite songs in the series, which Olivia and Dara sing and Frankie and Julia dance to.”

HSMTMTS

4. Filming at the real East High was a surreal experience. “I didn’t think it was possible to be star-struck by a building, but I was genuinely star-struck by the school whenever we walked up!” Cornett says with a laugh. “It was like it was magical, in a way.” Reinders confirms that Sharpay Evans’ locker remains intact (“It’s real!”), with Federle joking, “Paris has the Eiffel Tower, and Salt Lake has East High. It’s a mecca!”

5. Federle and Reinders first met on Broadway. “Kate and I did Gypsy together,” the executive producer reveals. “She starred in the 2003 Bernadette Peters revival, playing her daughter, and I was a chorus boy. I was always intimidated by her!” When Reinders auditioned for High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, she brought a flute. That sealed the deal, making Federle realize she already “was this drama teacher who cares so much about theater and has so much to say to the next generation.” Regarding the flute, Reinders says she played the flute, the violin, and the piano when she was a child. So, when she was asked to demonstrate any special skills, she didn’t hesitate. “After I sang,” she says, “I literally pulled it out of a bag and played ‘We’re All in This Together!’”

Kristen Bell Sets the Stage for the Disney+ Series Encore!

By Zach Johnson

The show must go on—and in the case of Encore!, sometime it must go on decades later! Last week, Kristen Bell appeared at the IDA Presents: Disney+ Nonfiction Storytelling Showcase in Hollywood to offer an extended look at the highly anticipated series, premiering at launch on November 12. Bell serves as an executive producer on the series, which brings together former cast members of high school musicals for a reunion unlike any other. After playing the trailer that debuted at D23 Expo 2019, Bell asked the audience, “Who’s crying? Thank you for admitting that, you guys. I was, too!”

It’s hard not to get emotional talking about the series, Bell said. After all, the actress—best known to Disney fans for her voice work as Anna in the Frozen franchise—knew Encore! was something special after producing it as a one-off for ABC in late 2017. So, Bell and fellow executive producers Jason Cohen, Will Gluck, Alycia Rossiter, Jim Roush, and Richard Schwartz tried their luck at making even more magic by turning the special into a series. “We took it to Disney+,” she said, “and they said yes immediately!”

First, they had to lay the framework. “We sat down and tried to figure out: ‘What does an unscripted show like this look like?’” Bell recalled. “Unscripted shows sometimes involve a competition, but that didn’t feel right.” Ultimately, they settled on a simple idea: “We want this to be about real people who want to do this for the sake of human connection.”

Once that was decided, the casting process began. “We would ask people, ‘Do you want to get back on stage? Would you want to do this?’” Bell said. “Someone would send in a Skype interview and a bunch of information about their cast and say, ‘I would want to do it. Here are the 10 people I was in the production with.’ Then, we would have to call all of them. There were a lot of logistics to put this together, but the one thing that was not difficult was finding people. No matter what job you had, everybody wanted to come back. Everybody jumped at the opportunity. I don’t think anybody said no… I think that speaks to how much you grow as a human being from high school into adulthood.”

Kristen Bell

Encore! is a cathartic experience, Bell said, for both the performers and the viewers. In one episode, for example, a cast from Los Angeles High School reunites to perform the Tony® Award-winning musical Anything Goes—44 years after their final curtain call! “They came back onstage… and they nailed it!” a proud Bell said. “There’s something beautiful about reintroducing yourself to your friends, shedding the labels you had and the box you were in—before you knew how to communicate, before you knew what ‘vulnerability’ meant—and coming back and getting to know people, making amends, saying things you wish you had said, or taking back something you wish you hadn’t.”

The Disney+ series will feature former high school classmates staging productions of Annie, Beauty and the Beast, The Sound of Music, and more musicals. Bell added that the producers scoured the country to feature “every kind of person” possible. “There’s so much in this country that divides us, but the one thing that everybody has the same reaction to is when you mention high school,” she explained. “You have that pit in your stomach—whether it was amazing or traumatic or both. It really brings people together.”

Lizzie McGuire’s Entire Family to Return for New Disney+ Series

By Zach Johnson

Best. News. Ever! Hallie Todd, Robert Carradine, and Jake Thomas will reprise their roles as Jo, Sam, and Matt McGuire in Lizzie McGuire, the highly anticipated Disney+ series. They join previously announced star and executive producer Hilary Duff. This week, the cast reunited for the first time in 15 years for a read-through of the first episode! As was revealed at D23 Expo 2019, original Lizzie McGuire series creator Terri Minsky will return as showrunner and executive producer of the Disney+ series. Rachel Winter will executive-produce, and Ranada Shepard will co-executive produce.

“We are incredibly excited to bring back one of the most popular Disney Channel series of all time along with some beloved and familiar faces,” said Ricky Strauss, president, Content & Marketing, Disney+. “With Terri at the helm and Hilary, Hallie, Robert, and Jake back after all these years, it’s our honor to welcome the McGuire family into the Disney+ family.”

Lizzie McGuire Logo

“Just like there is no Lizzie McGuire without Hilary Duff, there is no McGuire family without Hallie, Robert, and Jake,” added Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer, Disney Channels Worldwide. “The original series holds a special place in the hearts of so many, and we can’t wait to introduce fans, both old and new, to an older, wiser, yet still perfectly imperfect Lizzie.”

The new Lizzie McGuire story picks up as the titular character is just about to turn 30. She seemingly has it all—her dream job as an assistant to a fancy New York City decorator, her dream guy, and a picturesque Brooklyn apartment—but things aren’t always as they seem. With a little help from her friends, her loving family, and her 13-year-old alter-ego in animated form, Lizzie navigates the ups and downs of adulthood.

What’s This? Everything You Need to Know About Haunted Mansion Holiday

By Savannah Salazar

Season’s screamings! Holiday cheer is in the air, and spirits are high, especially at Haunted Mansion Holiday—where the Pumpkin King Jack Skellington and company have gathered for their yearly haunt. Inspired by Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, the classic attraction, which is celebrating a “Mostly Ghostly” 50th anniversary this year, gets a frightfully festive transformation just in time for Halloween and Christmas. So, gather around, boos and ghouls, for some spooktacular fun facts.

Haunted Mansion Gingerbread House

Deck the Halls
Outside, the mansion has more than 400 flickering candles to create a ghostly glow, while each night more than 100 jack-o’-lanterns shine bright. And hung both inside and outside the Haunted Mansion are thousands of feet of “Black Gnarly” garland, which Jack Skellington’s ghost dog, Zero, has collected along with more than 200 bones to use as décor and presents. Plus, be sure to look out for Sandy Claws’ list of who’s naughty or nice!

Supernatural Effects
Inside the attraction, there are plenty of haunts coming out to socialize—both from the Haunted Mansion and from Halloween Town. Jack Skellington and Zero appear in an animated sequence above visitors in The Stretching Room as you go farther into the depths of the mansion. During your tour, there are more than two dozen additional denizens of Halloween Town who materialize—from “Scary Teddy” to a man-eating wreath, skeleton reindeer, Oogie Boogie, and Sally.

On the 13th Day of Christmas…
All the rooms of the Haunted Mansion have a bit of holiday spirit, and the séance room is no exception. All around are 13 spinning fortune cards showing Christmas gifts that Madame Leota’s ghoul love gave to her. When it comes to the spirited voice performance of Madame Leota, the voice for the seasonal attraction is performed by Imagineer Kim Irvine, the daughter of Leota Toombs— long-time Imagineer and Disney Legend—whose face was the model for Madame Leota.

Graveyard Ghouls in Cookie Form

Very, Merry Special (Tricks and) Treats
Since the start of Haunted Mansion Holiday—18 years ago, to be exact—there has been a supernaturally sweet creation prominently displayed in the Grand Hall. This year, the gingerbread house celebrates the 50th anniversary of the ghoulish attraction, and the 10-foot tall Haunted Mansion replica is festooned with 15 spirited ghosts and luminous haunts—all in gingerbread form! Altogether, the house is made of more than 30 pounds of gingerbread and 120 pounds of frosting and icing.

Sally from Tim Burton's The Nightmare before Christmas

Graveyard Ghouls
Now, what’s a tour of Haunted Mansion without a trip through the graveyard? During the holidays, happy haunts, a gaggle of ghouls, and the Pumpkin King come out to socialize, including the iconic Graveyard Ice Angels. Designed with a jagged, ice-carved look, their wings and snow-glow colors shine with ghoulish luster every year. The graveyard itself eerily glows with nearly 7,500 square feet of snow, more than 20 gallons of UV (ultra-violet) paint and twinkles with 1,000 tiny, orange lights decorating the trees. It’s truly a chilling sight.
