The Disney+ Original Prop Culture Takes a New and Unique Look at Favorite Disney Films

By Jim Frye

Two moments in particular stick out for Dan Lanigan from the production of Prop Culture, the new Disney+ Original where the enthusiastic collector explores the history and warehouses of The Walt Disney Company, along with the Walt Disney Archives, searching for some of the most iconic and beloved props from Disney’s storied past. “The first moment is sitting down with Rick Moranis,” he says, almost reverentially, a nod to Moranis’ long hiatus from entertainment. Moranis cemented his comedy-legend status with such films as Ghostbusters, Little Shop of Horrors, Spaceballs and Strange Brew, but it was his portrayal as Wayne Szalinski, a nutty inventor in Disney’s 1989 hit Honey I Shrunk the Kids, that forever endeared him to Disney fans.

“He hasn’t really sat down with anybody in a really long time,” says Lanigan. “I was very nervous. We just had a great conversation. And as much as I love Honey I Shrunk the Kids, one of my favorite films is also Strange Brew, which he and Dave Thomas directed. He was just super interesting and enlightening.”

The new Disney+ series highlights a classic Disney film each episode; featuring cinematic artifacts and the stories behind the objects, along with the artists and crafts people who brought them to life.

For example, in the sixth episode, viewers will enter the wardrobe as Lanigan examines some of the most memorable artifacts from The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. He travels to San Diego Comic-Con and shares a pair of swords with WETA Workshop founder Sir Richard Taylor, then examines the White Queen’s sleigh with actor Kiran Shah. He follows that by exploring the details behind the movie’s mythical creatures with fabrication department supervisor Beth Hathaway and Academy Award®-winning makeup effects artist Howard Berger. Lanigan then tops it off with a visit to the Walt Disney Archives with director Andrew Adamson to discuss the wardrobe and a Mr. Tumnus statue.

prop culture

“I’ve been reaching out and talking to producers and directors and prop masters for years,” says Lanigan, his boyish enthusiasm barely concealed, “but to do it specially for Disney films—that’s what’s super exciting about this series. We’ll be seeing some cool props and pieces I didn’t even know existed.”

prop culture

In another episode, Lanigan turns his obsession on Who Framed Roger Rabbit, which is where he experienced the second moment that sticks out from the season. “Having a shave and haircut with Christopher Lloyd was really fun,” he says. “And showing him his Judge Doom costume, and seeing how much he really wanted to put it back on and get back into character… it was super, super cool! Every episode has its own special thing.”

prop culture

Lanigan’s Prop Culture journey also takes him to the home studio of Disney Legend Andreas Deja for a lesson on how animated characters were drawn over live-action frames, before he examines concept art with Disney animators Chris Buck and Mike Giaimo as they describe Roger Rabbit’s earliest days. During the episode, stunt coordinator Charlie Croughwell makes a discovery in the desert while Academy Award-winning mechanical effects supervisor George Gibbs demonstrates some of the inventive methods the film’s effects team used to create the illusion of animated characters on a live set. We then meet Charles Fleischer, the voice of Roger Rabbit.

Fans also get to join Lanigan on a special road trip adventure to discover the secrets of iconic props from The Muppet Movie. He visits Jim Henson Studios for an interview with Chairman Brian Henson, then meets up with Drew Struzan, the painter responsible for the original movie poster (Struzan also did many of the iconic Star Wars posters). Viewers will see what goes into dressing fashion diva Miss Piggy with designers Calista Hendrickson and Amy Van Gilder. Then, in Portland, Lanigan searches for a missing prop that was believed to be lost to the sands of time. Back east at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, New York, Lanigan explores their extensive Henson exhibit before heading back to the west coast for a chat with voice actor and puppeteer Dave Goelz. Of course, it wouldn’t really be a Muppet Movie episode without that special rainbow connection, courtesy of songwriter Paul Williams (and Kermit’s legendary banjo)!

prop culture

Lanigan says that creating this series has been a dream for him, and even though a second season has not yet been discussed, he has his wish list already prepped. “If we are lucky enough to get a second season, my personal favorites would be Dragonslayer,” he says. “There’s a lot of really great history there. And I’d love to work on Raiders of the Lost Ark, of course. I’ve been collecting Indiana Jones material for many, many years—it’s one of the first movies I collected as a prop collector. We’ll see if that can happen. Also, Star Wars would be great. Then maybe Edward Scissorhands. There’s also a lot of really great Fox films that we’d love to do as well.”

All eight episodes of Prop Culture are streaming now, only on Disney+!

Disney+ Orders New Series Just Beyond, Inspired by R.L. Stine’s Graphic Novels

By Zach Johnson

The latest news from Disney+ is giving us goosebumps! The streaming service has ordered the eight-episode series Just Beyond from writer and executive producer Seth Grahame-Smith. Produced by 20th Century Fox Television, the horror/comedy anthology, based on the best-selling BOOM! Studios graphic novel series from iconic children’s writer R.L. Stine, was created by Grahame-Smith, who famously blended horror and comedy as author of the novels Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and the screenwriter of the films Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, The Lego Batman Movie and The Saint.

“I grew up watching Twilight Zone reruns and the original Amazing Stories with my parents,” says Grahame-Smith. “I’ve always wanted to make a genre anthology series that families could enjoy together, and do it in a way that delivered for kids and adults alike. R.L. Stine has been a part of millions of childhoods, and Disney+ has already proven itself as a place that knows how to make high-quality shows for the whole family. I couldn’t be more excited to be working with both of them.”

just beyond

“Back in the day, we had a Goosebumps HorrorLand attraction at Walt Disney World,” says Stine. “It was one of the thrills of my life. Now I’m thrilled to be back with Disney for the TV series based on my graphic novels. Writing Just Beyond for BOOM! Studios has been a joy from the beginning, and I’m so happy to have the wonderful screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith bring the series to life on Disney+. How lucky can I be?”

A writers room for Just Beyond is being assembled and the series is expected to debut on Disney+ in the fall of 2021. Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg will be producing the series through their KatzSmith Productions banner.

Katy, Lionel, and Luke Hint at Surprises to Come on American Idol

By Beth Deitchman

“I like that word, ‘surprise, surprise!’ You know what I’m saying?” Lionel Richie asked, following Sunday night’s episode of American Idol—the second to be filmed completely remotely. And we know exactly what he was saying! The evening was chock-full of unexpected moments of delight—from special appearances from musicians extraordinaire Stevie Wonder, Darius Rucker, and Charlie Puth; to the exciting reveal of this season’s top 10… which, thanks to the judges’ save, turned into a top 11.

american idol

The remote shows, Richie said, are coming together through “a group effort like I’ve never seen before.” He’s been thrilled by how innovative the contestants have been with their performances, and emphasizes, “We’re all kind of communicating by this amazing technological approach…How this show is rolling out is amazing. It really is amazing to see it all come together.”

During a virtual press conference after this week’s episode, Richie was joined by his fellow judges, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan, to give us the inside scoop on which performances blew them away this week, what we might expect from the upcoming season finale, and even how they’re dealing with hair and makeup challenges. Here are some of the fun facts we learned:

american idol

It was a unanimous decision for the judges to give their only save for the season to Makayla Phillips.
“There was no pulling of legs and fights breaking out,” Katy Perry reassured us, stressing, “She’s an incredible singer, first and foremost, and we based our decision on the talent.” At this point in the competition, Perry pointed out, all of the remaining contestants are so skilled that any one of them has the potential for superstardom.

Luke Bryan believes that Phillips has what he referred to as an “eye of the tiger” look. “She’s got a little swagger and a little confidence and that’s really great,” he said, sharing that he’s been a fan since her first audition. “I know I wanted that voice to get out there one more time for America to figure out what they wanted to do.”

The judges were just as moved as we were by the Idol hopefuls’ performances from home.
“Francisco made me cry,” Perry said of Francisco Martin’s tender rendition of James Arthur’s song, “Falling Like the Stars.” “I think it was the lyrics and the way he delivered them, the way he kind of looked into the iPhone,” she said with a laugh, acknowledging the new technology the contestants have learned to use to great effect. “It was just a powerful moment that I connected with.”

american idol

Richie has an affinity for a foursome that he lovingly referred to has his “aw shucks and shy guys”: Dillon James, Jonny West, Francisco Martin, and Arthur Gunn. “For me, what I love about them is they are so talented, but I think they are surprising themselves when they get voted to the next level. They’re almost in shock that they made it. I think what we’re discovering is them discovering themselves,” Richie said.

american idol

Staten Island-based Julia Gargano’s tribute to her home city, her moving performance of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind,” landed with all three judges. Bryan shared, “When you look at her being a really hardcore, New York prideful girl, and to be able to, at this point, do that whole moment today and honor New York, it was just a really cool moment with everything New York is dealing with right now.”

All three judges are developing new skills while staying safe at home.
Before the remote shows began, Bryan reached out to the makeup artist who usually tours with him for advice. “She put a little kit together and some instructional videos—and I guess blessed it with some rosary beads and prayed and prayed I would get it right,” he laughed.

american idol

Richie acknowledged that his hair is growing in more than he’d been used to, but he’s OK with that. He shared, ”I’m very happy to see it from one respect: I came from an era when hair was there, so I’m just glad to see it coming back in good strong form.”

Perry admitted that she doesn’t typically wear a lot of makeup in her down time, but she has a drawer full of products that she’s been able to go to. “I’m thankful to know how to apply a false eyelash,” she stressed, confessing that she feels more challenged when it comes to her hair. “I’m utilizing headbands and big earrings and trying to distract from my hair,” she said.

american idol

The coming weeks will bring more surprises… and some Disney Magic!
Next Sunday, ABC will air The Disney Family Singalong Volume II and Katy Perry plans to bring her own blend of pixie dust to the special, which will air immediately before American Idol. During Sunday night’s American Idol episode, the expectant mom told Ryan Seacrest that she’ll be “leaning into” the theme of Mother’s Day. “For me, it’s all about what I grew up listening and watching with my own mom, so I wanted to do a song from when I was a little girl and has special meaning to me,” Perry said.

The Idol hopefuls will also explore the worlds of Disney on next week’s show. Each remaining contestant will perform two songs: one from the renowned Disney songbook and the second dedicated to the mother figures in their lives as a Mother’s Day tribute.

And when it comes to the season finale, viewers should continue to expect the unexpected. “I think all of us are thinking about ways we can contribute from our houses, something interesting for the final show,” Perry said. “I think our producers, they have some tricks up their sleeves. I know Lionel’s got something up his sleeve. I’ve got something up my sleeve, and Luke does, too!” she promised. “We want to keep it spicy!”

Tune in to American Idol next Sunday, May 10, to find out who America voted into the Top 7, and to see the hopefuls take on some of your favorite Disney songs. The fun starts at 7 p.m. ET with The Disney Family Singalong: Volume II, followed by American Idol at 8 p.m. ET.

We’ve intercepted a transmission from a galaxy far, far away: Academy Award® winner Taika Waititi, who recently won Best Adapted Screenplay for Jojo Rabbit and directed the widely-acclaimed first season finale episode of The Mandalorian on Disney+, will direct and co-write a new Star Wars feature film for theatrical release! Joining Waititi on the screenplay will be Academy Award nominee Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who won a BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Film of the Year on the three-time Oscar®-winning film 1917.

Simba-fy Your Instagram Stories with New Disney’s The Lion King Filter

Looking for a cool new way to spruce up all those Instagram stories you’ve been creating lately? (C’mon, don’t be shy; we like to give ourselves some dog ears or neon-colored glasses too.) Then look no further than a brand-new filter, courtesy our pals at Disney Theatrical Productions.

Starting earlier this week, Instagram users can now access filters inspired by Disney’s The Lion King, the long-running, Tony® Award-winning musical based on the hit animated film. Users will be able to “wear” the iconic character masks of Simba and Nala, recreated exactly from director/designer Julie Taymor’s original Tony-winning designs through Augmented Reality technology. The free filter can also be found by searching “Simba and Nala” in the “browse effect” search tool within Instagram.

In case you need a refresher course on how to use an Instagram filter: Use the camera to focus on a user’s face; Simba’s filter will appear. Tap the user’s face once to switch to Nala’s filter. Bring a friend into focus with another user and both filters will appear!

And when using both filters, tap the screen to switch from one user to another.

It’s the “Circle of Life” for your social media, and we’re (as the kids say) “here for it”…

Disney Introduces Cloth Face Masks—Plus Donations for Those in Need

In line with recent recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control regarding wearing cloth face coverings in public, Disney has just announced a new line of non-medical, reusable cloth face masks in the U.S. featuring favorite Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars characters.

The cloth face masks come in small, medium, and large sizes and in a wide variety of prints highlighting a range of fan-favorite characters—including Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse; Anna and Elsa from Frozen; Woody and Buzz Lightyear from the Toy Story franchise; The Avengers; the Child—affectionately known as Baby Yoda—from Disney+’s The Mandalorian; and many more. Disney’s cloth face masks are available for pre-order now in packs of four on shopDisney in the U.S., and are estimated to ship in June. These masks align with the FDA’s latest recommendations on non-surgical, non-industrial grade face masks.

Additionally, Disney is donating one million cloth face masks for children and families in underserved and vulnerable communities across the U.S.—and they’ll be distributed by MedShare, an Atlanta-based humanitarian aid organization that collects and distributes surplus medical supplies and equipment. Disney will also donate all profits from the sales in the U.S. of Disney’s cloth face masks to MedShare, up to $1 million, now through September 30.
