Meet the Monsters

By Jim Frye

Some are hairy. Some have sharp teeth. Some have three eyes. And they’ve all been trained to scare you. Trouble is, these monsters are now on the hunt for laughs. The not-quite-scary characters from Disney and Pixar’s beloved Monsters, Inc. and Monsters University return and new characters are introduced in this all-new series now streaming on Disney+.

Monsters at Work takes place the day after the Monsters, Inc. power plant starts harvesting the laughter of children to fuel the city of Monstropolis. Which is a challenge for new monster Tylor Tuskmon, who lands a job at Monsters, Inc. before discovering that his lifelong goal of scaring is out, and laughter is in. Because he has no experience in harvesting laughs, he gets reassigned to the Monsters, Inc. Facilities Team (MIFT), where he meets a misfit bunch of mechanics.

Here’s a roster of the main Monsters you’ll meet.

monsters at work

Mike / Billy Crystal
Comedian, actor, writer, director, producer, host, and Disney Legend Billy Crystal returns as the frantic yet lovable Mike Wazowski, who has been put in charge of the Monsters, Inc. power plant, along with Sulley, after the two of them discovered that laughter generates more power than screams. Crystal is known to audiences around the world as the star of such feature films as When Harry Met Sally…, City Slickers, and Analyze This; as a cast member of NBC’s Saturday Night Live; and as the acclaimed nine-time host of the Academy Awards®.

monsters at work

Sulley / John Goodman
Fellow Disney Legend John Goodman returns as everyone’s favorite big softie, James P. “Sulley” Sullivan, who—together with best buddy, Mike—now co-manages Monsters, Inc. Goodman is currently on production in the second season of Danny McBride’s HBO comedy series Righteous Gemstones and just wrapped the third season of ABC’s The Conners. Among Goodman’s many accolades are a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor and seven Emmy nominations for his role in Roseanne.

monsters at work

Tylor / Ben Feldman
Tylor Tuskmon is an eager young monster who graduated top of his class at Monsters University and always dreamed of becoming a Scarer, until he lands a job at Monsters, Inc. and discovers that the factory now harvests the laughter of children. Yikes. Feldman recently wrapped the sixth and final season of the critically acclaimed workplace comedy Superstore, in which he portrayed Jonah and was also a producer. He is also known for his role on the Emmy Award-winning Mad Men, where he co-starred as Michael Ginsberg, the aspiring new copywriter at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce.

The MIFT Crew

monsters at work

Val / Mindy Kaling
Mindy Kaling voices Val, an enthusiastic member of MIFT, and becomes close friends with newcomer Tylor. An Emmy-nominated writer, producer, New York Times best-selling author, director, and actor, Kaling joined the eight-person writing staff at NBC’s The Office at age 24. During her eight seasons at the show, she wrote 26 episodes (more than any other writer) and was nominated for an Emmy. She then created and starred in the The Mindy Project which ran for six seasons. “I first just want to say how excited I am to be part of this cast,” she said about Monsters at Work. “I love the actors that I get to act with.”

monsters at work

Fritz / Henry Winkler
Henry Winkler voices the character of Fritz, the scatterbrained boss of the MIFT gang. “It’s unbelievably great. It is so much fun,” says Winkler about working on the series. And what does he think about Fritz? “I love the way he looks. I love being part of this ensemble.” Winkler became a household name in the 1970s in the iconic role of Arthur Fonzarelli, aka “The Fonz,” in the TV series Happy Days on ABC. During his 10 years on the popular sitcom, he won two Golden Globe Awards, was nominated three times for an Emmy Award, and was also honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He currently co-stars as acting teacher Gene Cousineau on the hit HBO dark comedy Barry, and will be seen later this year in Wes Anderson’s new film, The French Dispatch.

monsters at work

Duncan / Lucas Neff
The multi-eyed and winged monster, Duncan, is an opportunistic plumber and is voiced by actor Lucas Neff, perhaps best known for portraying James “Jimmy” Chance in the Fox sitcom Raising Hope. Prior to that, Neff gained his first television credit with a role in the series finale of A&E’s The Beast starring Patrick Swayze. Neff currently stars in Carol’s Second Act on CBS.

monsters at work

Cutter / Alanna Ubach
And rounding out the colorful (literally) cast of characters of the MIFT group is Cutter, the officious rule follower on the MIFT team. She’s voiced by Alanna Ubach, an actress who is currently shooting the CBS all access Guilty Party, playing Tessa, archrival to Kate Beckinsale’s Beth. She is also about to shoot season 2 of critically acclaimed HBO series Euphoria as Suze Howard. She also starred as Mamá Imelda in Pixar’s Academy Award-winning Coco.

Other characters in Monsters at Work include Ms. Flint, voiced by Bonnie Hunt, who was formerly in charge of training new Scarers at Monsters, Inc., but now manages the department responsible for recruiting and training the funniest monsters to become Jokesters. Other cast members from the original movies include John Ratzenberger returning as Yeti and voicing a new role as Tylor’s dad, Bernard; Jennifer Tilly as Celia Mae; and Bob Peterson as Roze, twin sister to his original Monsters, Inc. character, Roz. Stephen Stanton joins the cast as Smitty and Needleman, the bumbling custodial team at Monsters, Inc.; and Aisha Tyler plays Tylor’s mom, Millie Tuskmon.

A True-Life Jungle Cruise with National Geographic: The Mekong River

By Justin Arthur and the National Geographic Image Collection

In celebration of the “gnu” excitement coming to the Jungle Cruise attractions at Disneyland Park and Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom this summer, along with Disney’s Jungle Cruise, in theaters and on Disney+ Premiere Access on July 30, D23 has teamed up with the National Geographic Image Collection to explore some of the real-life rivers that have inspired Adventureland over the years!

The National Geographic Image Collection archives began in 1919 as an illustration library, and contains over 64.5 million still images dating back to the 1860s. The ever-growing Image Collection is carefully preserved, curated and digitized, with new amazing photos from the pages of National Geographic magazine constantly added, making it one of the most significant photo collections in the world. D23 is pleased to partner with the expert team at the Image Collection to offer a glimpse into this vast archive and celebrate the Jungle Cruise!

The real-world Mekong river spans 2,700 miles and snakes through six Asian countries. Originating in the highlands of the Himalayas, the river begins in China and winds its way through vastly different landscapes in Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. The lower basin of  the Mekong is home to a dazzling variety of plant and animal life, and crucial to the livelihoods of over 60 million people. The region, rapidly changing due to the impacts of humans, is also a crucial habitat to many endangered species, including tigers and Asian elephants.

“For 16 months, New Yorkers have been eager to start going to the theatre again,” said Thomas Schumacher, President & Producer Disney Theatrical Productions. “The Lion King and Aladdin return to Broadway in September, but these four concerts allow us to welcome fans back to Broadway even sooner and give us a chance to raise much-needed funds to support the heroic work being done by the remarkable staff at The Actors Fund. “Over the past 25 years, the casts, crews, and staff of Disney Theatrical Productions have been such valued members of The Actors Fund extended family,” said Joseph Benincasa, President and CEO of The Actors Fund. “Their unwavering partnership has helped promote and support our many programs and services that provide vital assistance for our performing arts and entertainment colleagues, who are in need now more than ever. Meet the Characters of Marvel Studios’ Black Widow

By Zach Johnson

Marvel Studios’ Black Widow doesn’t just explore the titular hero’s past—it introduces fans to the people who shaped it. Based on the beloved Marvel comic-book series first published in 1964, the film features Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow. Rounding out the cast are Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Alexei aka Red Guardian, Rachel Weisz as Melina, and O-T Fagbenle as Mason.

The film is directed by award-winning filmmaker Cate Shortland and produced by Kevin Feige. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Nigel Gostelow, and Johansson serve as executive producers, and Brian Chapek and Mitch Bell serve as co-producers. The screenplay is written by Eric Pearson, and the story is by Jac Schaeffer and Ned Benson. Shot on location in Atlanta, Budapest, Morocco, Norway, and the U.K., Black Widow—the first film in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)—debuts concurrently in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access (for $29.99) in most markets on July 9, 2021.

Set between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, Black Widow shines a new light on Natasha’s life in the shadows. “I think what’s exciting about the film is we’re playing with the audience’s expectations. We’re exploring parts of Natasha that the audience has absolutely no idea about,” says Shortland. “We explore her family, love, and passion, and you get to see all these facets of her that we’ve never seen before.”

Before Black Widow launches worldwide, get to know the characters:

black widow

Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow

After her new family, the Avengers, breaks up, Natasha—now a fugitive for breaking the Sokovia Accords—confronts the dark path she took to becoming a covert agent, as well as events that followed. She reluctantly reunites with people from her past who share a critical part of her history, as well as a desire to stop a lethal force from being released.

“I know a lot about this character because she’s in me. But I haven’t really had the opportunity to access all the parts of her,” says Johansson. “Cate loves the idea of going inside this character. I’ve been able to make a lot of discoveries about her—to find different strengths and different flaws. It’s been pretty therapeutic. I can’t imagine that many actors have the opportunity to do that with a character they’ve played for 10 years.”

“When you see Natasha in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she’s often this kind of impenetrable force,” the Tony® Award winner continues. “She’s reckless and out of control but still has this amazing intellect. What are her secrets? Her vulnerabilities? I am excited to share her fragility and her strength. She is in a male world, and she projects a certain way of being in that world. What we wanted to do is find out who is the real Black Widow.”

black widow

Yelena Belova

A product of the Red Room’s unforgiving training program, Yelena is assertive and unapologetic. But when she finds herself caught in more than one widow’s web, Yelena’s only chance at survival may require teaming up with the one person she blames for a lifetime of suffering: Natasha. “Yelena is hurt and complicated and acts out,” says Pugh. “One of the coolest things about playing Yelena is just how complex and broken she is for someone who is so sure of what she does. She knows exactly how to function in the areas in which she’s been trained, but she has no clue how to live as a human being. She’s a lethal weapon, but also a bit of a kid. That’s been one of the nicest qualities about her.”

“She doesn’t exactly fit,” Pugh continues. “That’s one of the charming things about her. She reacts instinctually. There’s nothing mysterious about her. She’s quite simply there to get the job done. I think her relationship with Natasha is interesting because they’re constantly butting heads in the way that siblings do. But she’s equally, deeply in pain. She’s had a very confusing childhood and I think she’s constantly searching for a way to patch herself up.”

What Yelena wants more than anything, Pugh says, is for someone to apologize. “She wants to stop feeling like she’s insane. This isn’t normal, and she really wants to let everybody know that she did not have a choice in this,” the actress explains. “The whole of Yelena’s anger, and I suppose her journey, is just trying to get these people that she thought she knew so well to admit that what they did was wrong, and that she was abandoned.”

black widow

Alexei aka Red Guardian

The Red Room’s answer to Captain America, Alexei is a super soldier and spy who lived a lifetime of triumph during the Cold War. Alexei’s years of espionage are in the rearview, but he still considers himself a top hero… even if no one else does. He loves bragging about his glory days to anyone who will listen—which is easy, as his fellow inmates are a captive audience. Deep down—way deep down— he harbors a lot of guilt about his life as a spy, especially when it involves Natasha, whom he knew long before she became Black Widow. “In the beginning, for Alexei, everyone is sort of a reflection of him. That’s the narcissist’s M.O.; he is not interested in anyone else,” says Harbour. “He’s interested in how he’s reflected in their eyes: ‘So, am I cool? Am I strong? Do you like me? I know you do.’”

After all these years, Alexei has a chip on his shoulder that’s the size of The Hulk. “He grew up in the Soviet Union and was chosen for a program similar to the Americans’ Captain America,” says Harbour. “While the Americans were creating their hero, the Russians were developing the Red Guardian. The problem was that he did not become as famous as Captain America, and it’s the great tragedy of his life. He feels very unappreciated.”

black widow

Melina

A highly trained spy who has been cycled through the Red Room’s Widow program four times, Melina is cunning and methodical. After various undercover missions, one of which involved a young Natasha, the Red Room recognized Melina’s intelligence and made her one of its lead scientists. After decades of service, Melina has been able to distance herself from the Red Room and lives on a pig farm in Russia. But when Natasha shows up on her doorstep with Yelena and Alexei in tow, Melina must decide where her true allegiance lies.

After posing as the matriarch of a seemingly normal family that included Alexei and a young Natasha and Yelena, Melina wonders if she became too attached to her comrades. “She was recruited when she was very young. She became a Russian spy and was planted with Alexei and two very young children in America pretending to be a suburban family with a white picket fence. I think Melina was a lot happier in those years,” Weisz says. “I think her heart really hardened after that. She became hard and maybe a little bitter.”

black widow

Taskmaster

The masked assassin carries out deadly missions on behalf of the Red Room. Armed with the ability to mimic an enemy’s every move, the calculating and formidable villain will stop at nothing until his mission is accomplished. Taskmaster has an ability called photographic reflexes, meaning that “if he fights you once, he knows how to emulate your style,” says Winderbaum. “Natasha’s tricks might work in their first altercation, but by round two and three he knows everything, and she has to come up with something else.” Natasha also has a complicated connection to Taskmaster, even if it’s not immediately apparent. Teases Shortland, “In some ways, the Taskmaster is the living embodiment of Natasha’s backstory.”

black widow

Mason

A man of mystery with a can-do attitude, Mason is actually a former soldier turned international smuggler who’s paying a debt to Natasha after she rescued him from a Cambodian prison. Nonetheless, their bond is unmistakable. His ability to deliver on even the most far-fetched requests is admirable… though he’s often caught sleeping on the job.

“When we meet Natasha and Mason, we realize that they have this rapport—even though they have not seen each other for many years,” says Chapek. “They have this chemistry. It was very important to Cate that we see someone in Natasha’s past life who understands her in a way that the Avengers might not have.” New to the MCU, Mason is a “fixer,” Chapek adds. “We needed someone who could be charming, strong, and intelligent, and be on the same playing field as Natasha. O-T Fagbenle is just that; he is an incredible actor.”

Celebrate our Independence Day…with Independence Day!

By Natalie Auxier, Walt Disney Archives

“Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in this history of mankind.
Mankind—that word should have new meaning for all of us today.
We can’t be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests.

Perhaps it’s fate that today is the 4th of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom, not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution—but from annihilation.
We’re fighting for our right to live, to exist.

And should we win the day, the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice:

We will not go quietly into the night!
We will not vanish without a fight!
We’re going to live on!
We’re going to survive!
Today, we celebrate our Independence Day!”

Starring as President Thomas J. Whitmore, Bill Pullman gave this heroic and rousing speech in the 20th Century Fox blockbuster hit, Independence Day (1996). The film begins with an alien invasion of Earth and takes the audience on a thrilling journey with the heroes who try to stop the interstellar threat from wiping out mankind. Directed by Roland Emmerich, the film also stars Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, Vivica A. Fox, and Mary McDonnell.

The Walt Disney Archives celebrates the 4th of July by showcasing some of the cosmic concept art, storyboards, set drawings, and posters from the film’s extensive art collection! Fun fact: when Independence Day Resurgence (2016) began pre-production, filmmakers reached out to the Archives to research and draw inspiration from the original film for the sequel. This is but one way that the Archives assists the creative process when it comes to the production of sequels, prequels, reboots and remakes in their journey to create seamless continuity between films, or fun little nods to previous works.

Lily is determined to uncover an ancient tree with unparalleled healing abilities that possess the power to change the future of medicine. Thrust on this epic quest together, the unlikely duo encounters innumerable dangers and supernatural forces, all lurking in the deceptive beauty of the lush rainforest. But as the secrets of the lost tree unfold, the stakes reach even higher for Lily and Frank. Their fate—and mankind’s—hangs in the balance.

So, are you Team Frank or Team Lily? No matter your allegiance, mark your calendars for Disney’s Jungle Cruise when it’s released simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access (for a one-time $29.99 fee) on Friday, July 30!

Latest Trailer for Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings

Debuting late last week, the new trailer for Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings is as thrilling as they come.

The film follows Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), a young Super Hero whose journey of self-discovery unfolds in this never-before-seen origin story. “Shang-Chi’s main problem in his life is rooted in not knowing who he really is,” says Destin Daniel Cretton, the film’s director and one of the writers, who is elated to bring Shang-Chi’s story to the big screen. “He has to learn how to own every part of himself. If he doesn’t allow himself to look at all of it—the good, the bad, the light and the dark—and to own it all, he won’t be able to reach his full potential.”

Told with stunning visuals, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s signature spectacle, and lots of mind-blowing action—along with the talents of a diverse, stellar cast—Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings opens in theaters on September 3.
