Alfonso Ribeiro Joins Tyra Banks for Dancing with the Stars—Plus More in News Briefs

By Courtney Potter

Dancing with the Stars Winner Alfonso Ribeiro Returns as Co-Host

As D23 has previously covered, Dancing with the Stars is making a big move this fall—to Disney+! And when it does, it’ll have a new co-host hitting the ballroom dance floor with mic in hand…

Season 19 Mirrorball Champion Alfonso Ribeiro will now co-host the show, alongside supermodel and businesswoman Tyra Banks, who returns as host and executive producer for her third consecutive season. Expert judges Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli, and Derek Hough also return to their seats on the ballroom floor. The season 31 premiere on Disney+ will be announced at a later date, so stay tuned!

New Dancing with the Stars co-host Alfonso Ribeiro is wearing a blue checkered suit and brown shoes, standing against a white background, and is smiling at the camera.

Dancing with the Stars has been such an important part of my life for so many years, and I am ecstatic to officially rejoin this tight-knit family as co-host,” Ribeiro recently said. “Tyra and I have a longstanding friendship that I hope will resonate with all of the fans at home as we kick off this new season on Disney+.”

Banks added, “I’ve known Alfonso since I was 19 years old, and he always puts a smile on my face whenever I see him. Having such a fun-loving, longtime friend as co-host warms my heart. Plus, he’s won the competition before, so he knows exactly what the stars are going through. Bantering back and forth with him live is going to be so much fun!”

After an incredible 30 seasons on ABC, Dancing with the Stars moves to its new home on Disney+, premiering exclusively in the U.S. and Canada this fall, making it the first live series to debut on the streaming service.

Disney Original Documentary Mija Coming to Theaters This August

Earlier this week, Disney Original Documentary released the official trailer for Mija, the award-winning feature documentary debut from Emmy®-nominated director Isabel Castro. It premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival as an Official Selection of the NEXT section, which featured innovative works with a forward-thinking approach to storytelling.

The film features Doris Muñoz and Jacks Haupt, two daughters of undocumented immigrants from Mexico who are both navigating careers in the music industry. Seeking to provide for their families while achieving their dreams, Doris and Jacks bond over the ever-present guilt of being the first American-born members of their undocumented families and the financial risks of pursuing their dreams. For them, the pressure of success is heightened due to their families’ hope for green cards and reunification. Mija is a poignant and emotional tribute to immigrants and their children.

The film will be released in theaters in New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco on Friday, August 5—and will stream globally on Disney+ later this year, so keep your eyes peeled.

Disneyland Paris Preps to Launch Marvel Avengers Campus

Our friends at Disneyland Paris are preparing for the official opening day of Marvel Avengers Campus—but some fans have already gotten the Super Hero treatment, from a star-studded campus unveiling to an exclusive panel with Imagineers and members of the Marvel Studios team. (Luckily for those of us who couldn’t attend the panel, it was recorded and can be viewed in the video above.)

Bob Chapek, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, was joined by Natacha Rafalski, President of Disneyland Paris, Captain Marvel’s Brie Larson, and Ms. Marvel’s Iman Vellani to introduce the campus to 1,200 invited guests July 9. Summoned around the Quinjet for the grand finale, guests danced the night away thanks to tunes from DJ The Avener—and the evening ended with a spectacular drone show, orchestrated by none other than Doctor Strange himself!

The following day, more than 600 Disney fans, influencers, and media representatives attended the “Creating Avengers Campus” conference to learn more from the Imagineers and Marvel Studios team about the creative and collaborative process that brought Avengers Campus to life—the inspiration for the land; the guiding principles of designing the first-ever Marvel-themed universe in Europe; and the challenges encountered throughout the process.

ESPN Films’ The Captain Follows Derek Jeter’s Life Beyond the Diamond

By Andie Hagemann

Derek Jeter was the face of the New York Yankees, a five-time World Series Champion, and one of the biggest superstars in sports. Now, the once uber-private professional athlete is ready to tell his story. Directed by Emmy® Award winner Randy Wilkins, ESPN Films’ documentary series The Captain chronicles the extraordinary life of the Hall of Fame baseball player on and off the field and features exclusive, candid interviews with Jeter, his family, and dozens of former teammates, rivals, and fans.

Episode one of the seven-part series will debut Monday, July 18, simultaneously on ESPN and ESPN+ at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT, following the MLB All Star Home Run Derby.

The series is executive produced by Spike Lee, Mike Tollin, Mandalay Sports Media, Excel Sports Management’s media arm Excel Media, and Connor Schell, in association with The Players’ Tribune and Major League Baseball. For more on the special, enjoy this exclusive Q&A with Wilkins.

(L-R) Former New York Yankee Derek Jeter sits in a grey chair next to director Randy Wilkins on a soundstage in between filming interviews for ESPN Films’ The Captain.

D23: How did you initially become involved with The Captain? What attracted you to the project?
Randy Wilkins (RW): I’m a native of the Bronx and a huge Yankees fan, so that allure brought me into this space well before I knew that I was going to make it. Being a Yankees fan is a big part of who I am and I’m very proud of that. But in terms of specifically being attached to this project, I came up under Spike Lee; I’ve known him for close to 20 years—he was my professor at NYU [graduate film program], and I started off working under him as an editorial intern on Inside Man in 2004. I worked my way through the ranks, later becoming an assistant editor and editor for a lot of Spike’s projects. I was directing on the side and still making things, but in June of 2020, Spike called me out of the blue and asked how I was doing and dealing with the pandemic. Then he asked me who was my favorite Yankee was. I said Derek Jeter—but at that time, obviously, there are no sports [being played] and Yankees were not first and foremost on my mind. So I thought, ‘What’s going on here? Why are you asking me this?’ Spike told me that Derek wanted to do a film on himself and was ready to speak his truth, and Spike suggested that I’d be the one to direct it. I almost dropped the phone in total shock—one, because I was totally caught off guard that Derek wanted to make a film on himself, knowing that he was so private in the in the public and in the media; and two, because I might have this opportunity to tell Derek Jeter’s story, meet him, and all that other stuff. I met Derek on a Zoom call and we hit it off right away; it felt like I’ve known him for 10 years. Maybe a week or two later, I found out that I got the gig.

D23: Walk us through the story structure of the documentary; did Derek have a lot of input on the creative process?
RW: In terms of story structure, that was all me and our team. Derek didn’t have much influence or commentary on it. We wanted to build out a very specific timeline of all the events prior to Derek’s career, and then during and after, that we wanted to explore throughout the film. We had a room in our office where we had two walls, with a corkboard on it, and [on it] we had a year and then all the baseball events that happened that year. Then we were filling the gaps with cultural stuff that happened in that year and things that might have happened with Derek on a personal level during [at the same time]. We built our interview list from there, and we went off to the races.

But it’s important to let people know that we didn’t stick to that to the tee. My philosophy is the footage is ‘clean’—so wherever the footage leads you, that’s where you’re going. You could have this nice row of index cards on a wall, but that’s not really the story. The story is what we captured in footage. I know Derek looked at cuts, it was collaborative [that way], but there was nothing mandated; it was very much making sure that we were accurate with our information from what Derek can remember, and also making sure that we were telling an authentic story.

D23: Did you learn anything new about Derek that you didn’t know before directing The Captain?
RW: I didn’t realize how important trust and loyalty were to him. There were some stories over the years that talked about his relationships with people both on and off the field, but there wasn’t anything that really captured how important those two values are to him. It was very apparent that he treats friends like family, and that family is first and foremost for him. He has a small circle to protect himself, but—he also admits this—he has trouble trusting people. He’s always jumping to what people’s motives might be when he comes across them. I noticed not just from speaking with him, but to his family, his friends, teammates, and former teammates, how important those values are. I also learned how much his biracial identity shaped his worldview—and how the experiences that he had as a young man, and the experiences that his sister had as a young woman, influenced the way that he interacted with the world and how the world interacted with him. On the athlete side, [I didn’t realize] how intense of a competitor he is. He has an insatiable desire to compete and to win.

D23: What’s your favorite episode?
RW: Episode five, because we really get into race in celebrity culture and the impact of celebrity culture on the celebrities themselves. I think it’s the episode that really captures this idea that I was going for—where, when we talk about Derek, we’re also talking about ourselves. To do that, you have to step outside of the baseball field and address with things that are the tenants of our culture. It gave us an opportunity to really explore things that talk about American culture or our social norms. I think they’re really brought into the scope of the film in multiple ways, and I’m very proud of it.

D23: Do you have a favorite memory of Derek Jeter on the field?
RW: Whenever they won a World Series, that’s my favorite Derek Jeter moment. I’m sure that’s his favorite moment too!

D23: What do you hope audiences come away with after watching The Captain?
RW: I don’t believe in dictating to people how they should feel watching a film or watching a series. An audience brings so many different things to the table that influence the way they experience a film that it’s not my place to dictate or challenge those things. It’s to present a story, try to be as authentic as possible, and let people connect to it in the ways that they connect to it. They might have an experience that sets off an emotion because they see something that takes them back to a very personal experience. I don’t want to take that away from the audience. I think once it’s out, it’s theirs; It’s not mine anymore. So I hope that they really connect to it and enjoy it, and are willing to go along for the ride.

Lauren Ridloff and Alaqua Cox on Deaf Representation in the MCU

By Zach Johnson

In the past year, two Deaf characters have debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), furthering The Walt Disney Company’s and Marvel Studios’ commitment to inclusive storytelling. First came Makkari, the speedster played by Lauren Ridloff in Eternals, then came Maya Lopez, the gang leader played by Alaqua Cox, in Hawkeye. Disney is “Celebrating the Accessible” this Disability Pride Month by honoring the diversity and intersectionality of the disability and neurodivergent communities via increased representation, celebration, education, and accessibility. In excerpts from recent issues of Disney twenty-three (offered exclusively to D23 Gold Members as a benefit of their membership), the two stars open up about what that means to them.

“I’m amazed with Marvel because they are doing such a great job with diversity and representation,” says Alaqua, who will reprise her role in Echo, coming to Disney+ in 2023. “It means so much to me because I feel like kids with all types of cultures and disabilities deserve to have more role models that look like them… I’m so grateful to have this opportunity because I am one of the examples of how we are going to shape the minds of the next generation, and I hope they are happy to watch their culture represented accurately and authentically. Representation matters more than we know.”

Inside The Domo, the starship used by the Eternals, Makkari, played by Lauren Ridloff, leans against Druig, played by Barry Keoghan, as they both look up. Makkari is holding an ancient artifact and wearing a graphic tee, a knit hoodie, and delicate jewelry. Druig is wearing a black leather jacket and a black shirt.

Lauren admits she “didn’t think too much about the fact” that [she] was going to be the first Deaf Super Hero in the MCU until Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige introduced the cast during San Diego Comic-Con in 2019. “When I walked onstage, I noticed a group of people going positively crazy, hands waving in the air,” she recalls. “That’s the deaf way of applauding, so when I realized there was a group of Deaf fans in the audience, the profundity of it hit me right there and made it hard to stay standing up.

“Being cast as a powerful entity who happens to be deaf is groundbreaking,” Lauren continues. “It shouldn’t be like that in this day and age, but it’s finally happening—and on such an enormous platform. Finally, the world sees how I exist as a deaf individual. My strengths are different than most and have a place here in this universe. One just has to learn how to perceive nonconformity as an opportunity for untapped power.”

Marvel Studios hired consultants and interpreters to ensure that both actresses felt supported while filming their respective projects. In addition, several actors and filmmakers learned how to sign basic expressions in American Sign Language (ASL). “I remember meeting Jeremy Renner on my first day of work,” Alaqua says. “I was a nervous wreck, as it was my very first acting job. He complimented me in ASL, which comforted me. Hailee Steinfeld also spelled out her name to me in ASL at the studio where we were doing our stunt training. I thought it was sweet of them to put in the effort to learn basic ASL just to communicate with me. It means a lot as a deaf person.”

Maya Lopez, played by Alaqua Cox, uses American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate with Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio), in a scene from Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye. Maya is wearing a black leather jacket and skintight jeans, and her hair is pulled back. She has cuts and bruises on her face. Kingpin, whose back is turned to the camera, is holding a cane and wearing a white blazer. They are standing inside a colorful restaurant that is decorated for Christmas with garland, ornaments, and more.

As for Lauren, she says Angelina Jolie, who plays the warrior Thena, “was the first to disclose that she had some familiarity with ASL” and used it to introduce her children. Lauren’s husband, Douglas Ridloff, helped her other co-stars—Gemma Chan, Salma Hayek, Brian Tyree Henry, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Richard Madden, Lia McHugh, and Kumail Nanjiani—learn the language. “The cast was very open and receptive to opportunities to sign their dialogue, so we had Douglas work as an ASL consultant,” she says. “He taught them how to sign as if they’d been signing for thousands of years.”

Alaqua and Lauren are both proud of the strides Marvel Studios has made for Deaf representation, and they are excited to see its stories become even more accessible. “There is now a lot of discussion about creating new [ASL] signs for the MCU—name signs for characters,” Lauren says. “Sign language now possesses space within that incredible fantasy world of superhuman skills and abilities. The community is responding to that, so new signs are coming out as a result. We’re now part of the Super Hero vernacular.”

Everything You Need to Know About ZOMBIES 3

By Zach Johnson

Not even a Z-band can temper our excitement for ZOMBIES 3!

It’s Addison and Zed’s final year at Seabrook High School and relations between humans and monsters have never been better. Zed is determined to win a football scholarship, but he’s feeling the pressure—not only because he would be the first zombie to ever attend college, opening the door for all monsters, but because he wants to enroll in Mountain College alongside Addison, who’s already been accepted.

“If he doesn’t go to college and Addison does, who knows what that means for their relationship?” Manheim asks D23. “We have a very cute little song that explores how they’re feeling about their relationship. It’s my favorite song in the movie and it was also my favorite number to shoot.” Elaborating on the school sweethearts’ dynamic, Donnelly says, “It’s really cool to see how mature Addison and Zed have become, because they have so much history and chemistry. They really love each other, but they’re worried about what might happen—even though nothing is actually wrong.”

“They’ve grown a lot together,” Manheim adds. “Now they’re at a fork in the road.”

(Left to Right): Aliens A-li (Kyra Tantao), A-lan (Matt Cornett), and A-Spen (Terry Hu) stand in the town square of Seabrook at night. They have icy blue hair and are wearing futuristic outfits in shades of blue, silver, and white.

It isn’t long before Addison and Zed realize there are multiple forks in the road. For one thing, Addison is still struggling with wanting to know who she is and where she comes from. For the time being, she’s keeping busy getting ready for the international cheer-off, which brings new group of outsiders—aliens—to Seabrook. “Zed has the same reaction to the aliens that he did with the werewolves [in ZOMBIES 2],” Manheim says. “He doesn’t know if they’re safe or why they’re here. He just wants to make sure that Addison is OK.” Terry Hu, Matt Cornett, and Kyra Tantao join the cast as A-Spen, A-lan, and A-li, respectively—a trio of super-smart, telepathic aliens who harbor a big secret. “Having the new cast members as a part of our team was amazing,” Manheim says. “They’re all amazing people and their characters add a completely new dynamic to the movie. It allows for some crazy songs and dances, I’ll tell you that.”

Seabrook begrudgingly allows the aliens to stay for the competition, but the humans and monsters grow suspicious when they discover that the aliens may be looking for more than a friendly competition. “The aliens are here on a secret mission,” Hu tells D23. “The aliens’ planet is not well anymore, so now they need to find a new home.”

(Left to Right): Werewolves Wynter (Ariel Martin), Willa (Chandler Kinney), and Wyatt (Pearce Joza) stand in a line. Their brown hair has white streaks in it, and they are all wearing earth tones.

To do that, they must find “the most precious thing in Seabrook.” The instructions are vague, Hu admits, and things only get more confusing “once the aliens turn off their emotional suppressors and get distracted by their own specific things in Seabrook.” Without spoiling what distracts them, Trevor Tordjman, who plays student body president Bucky, says he can’t wait for fans to see how the aliens interact with the humans and monsters. “They really mix it up in Seabrook,” he says. “It’s very exciting.”

As for the werewolves? “The wolves are fully integrated into Seabrook life,” says Chandler Kinney, who plays pack leader Willa. “They are loving it.” Since ZOMBIES 2, Wynter (Ariel Martin) joined the football team, and Wyatt (Pearce Joza) developed a crush on hacktivist zombie Eliza (Kylee Russell), who secured an internship with Z-Corp. One thing that hasn’t changed, though, is that humans and monsters alike are apt to break into song at any moment. “The new dance numbers are bigger and better,” Kinney tells D23. “Draico Johnson, our choreographer, took them to the next level.”

Don’t forget to stream ZOMBIES 3, debuting Friday, July 15, on Disney+. A special “Lost Song” version of the movie will premiere Friday, August 12, on Disney Channel.
