Breaking News: Frozen is Taking the Snow on the Road

By Beth Deitchman

We’ve got some news that we can’t keep in—and heaven knows, we won’t even try! The Broadway smash Frozen will embark upon a North American tour in the fall of 2019 (commencing in Schenectady, New York), with an official opening planned for The Hollywood Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles, California.

Since its March 2018 opening, Frozen has smashed two long-standing house records at Broadway’s St. James Theatre, and the musical has received three Tony® Award nominations, including Best Musical. When Frozen takes the snow on the road next year, it will join the North American tours of The Lion King and Aladdin that are crisscrossing the continent at this very minute.

Frozen’s incredibly talented creative team—including the Academy Award®-winning writing trio of composer/lyricists Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez and book writer Jennifer Lee, along with Tony Award-winning director Michael Grandage, Tony-winning choreographer Rob Ashford, Tony-winning scenic and costume designer Christopher Oram, Tony-winning lighting designer Natasha Katz, Tony-nominated sound designer Peter Hylenski, Tony-winning video designer Finn Ross, Drama Desk Award-nominated puppet designer Michael Curry, and Tony-winning music supervisor Stephen Oremus—will again collaborate to bring the tour to vivid life.

Stay tuned for casting announcements and for the tour’s full itinerary, which will be released at a later date. In the meantime, you can register for advance ticket notifications and find additional information at FrozenTheMusical.com/TourFacebookTwitter, and Instagram.

This promises to be a tour worth melting for!

Exclusive First Look: The New Fantasia-Inspired Mickey Mouse Short is a Treat for the Eyes and Ears

By Beth Deitchman

Fantasia—it’s a word with several meanings. In music, it refers to a composition that doesn’t have a clearly defined form. Translated to other works of art, such as poetry or drama, a fantasia is a work that is brought to life with unrestricted creativity. And in the wonderful world of Disney, Fantasia is Walt Disney’s 1940 masterpiece, a symphonic concert with Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra, embellished by Disney animation. “Springtime,” the brand-new Mickey Mouse cartoon short debuting this Saturday, May 12, at 7:55 a.m. ET, is also a fantasia. The short has no dialogue and no sound effects; the soundtrack is comprised only of music, with a classical-inspired score that pays homage to the iconic film.

We sat down with Christopher Willis, the Emmy®-nominated composer for the Mickey Mouse shorts (as well as The Lion Guard and the Emmy-winning HBO series Veep) about putting a classical spin on this contemporary series. Here’s what the musicologist (who has a PhD on 18th-century music) had to say about “Springtime.”

Mickey Mouse Springtime

“Springtime” begins with a wonderful nod to Fantasia.
The first sound you’ll hear at the start of “Springtime” is the tapping of a conductor’s baton against a music stand to gain the attention from his or her orchestra. This is a callback to Fantasia’s opening scene, which began with a silhouette of famed conductor Leopold Stokowski, who engages the orchestra to start the film.

Mickey goes on an epic adventure.
Mickey and his nemesis, Pete, face off against each other in what Willis describes as a kind of “ballet.” Pete is the spirit of winter, while Mickey is a harbinger of spring. Winter doesn’t want to go away without a fight, so they have to battle it out in order for the seasons to progress,” Willis explains.

There is one big difference between the music in “Springtime” and the music in Fantasia.
Willis points out that in Fantasia, “The filmmakers found beloved pieces of classical music and then worked out stories or scenarios that would fit them and would help people to appreciate them even more.” He emphasizes that “Springtime” is written in a classical style that’s a mixture of 18th- and 19th-century influences such as Beethoven, Rossini and Tchaikovsky. Because “Springtime” is less abstract than the vignettes in Fantasia, Willis knew they needed a new piece that sounds classical. “With the expectation and the history that we’ve built up with Mickey Mouse, I think it makes more sense to be a complete story.”

Mickey Mouse Springtime

Different instruments represent the iconic characters.
With no dialogue, in “Springtime” it’s the music that tells the story and the instruments help guide you along. The low brass instruments, often used by Mozart to signify a powerful and often demonic force, here represent Pete; while the flute signifies Mickey. A solo violin represents a flower in a temple and the object of Mickey’s affection. You’ll have to tune in to “Springtime” for a grand violin solo—and a grand reveal, as well.

For the first time, Willis didn’t so much as score the animation as the artists animated Willis’ score.
Because the short is completely music-driven, Willis wrote the score much earlier than he usually would in the animation process. Executive producer/supervising director Paul Rudish and his team presented what were essentially sketches to Willis, so that he could advise on the pacing of specific scenes. “It allowed me to come back and say, ‘Well, if you could give me some more time here and a little less time here, a little more time here and a little less time here, then I can make musical phrases that make sense,’” he details.

There are Easter eggs—or should we say Ear-ster eggs?—for classical music aficionados.
When the temple is introduced in the short, Willis reveals that the accompanying music pays homage to Mozart, especially his opera The Magic Flute. And in fact, Mickey actually plays a magic flute throughout the short.

The score for a frenetic sequence when Pete steals Mickey’s magic flute features a fugato, a section often included in the middle of a classical composition to signify chaos. And for when spring begins to bloom at the end of “Springtime,” Willis composed a folk dance, an 18th-century musical “jig” that signifies a celebration. “Things in the cartoon often mean similar things to what they might have meant in classical music,” says Willis. He adds that the more you know about classical music, the more winks and nods you’ll discover—or perhaps, the more you enjoy the short, the more you’ll be inspired to learn.

The classic end-credits tune becomes a classical end-credits tune.
Stay tuned through the credits for a special version of Mickey’s beloved whistling melody, which is performed in “Springtime” by an orchestra in the classical style. Willis explains, “We wanted to give the cartoon a classy sendoff, rather than coming back to the old familiar whistling style.”

“Springtime” premieres Saturday at 7:55 a.m. ET/PT and on the DisneyNOW app. But you can view an exclusive clip from the short right here:

8 Important Life Lessons We’ve Learned from Disney Mothers

By Megan Deppe

There’s no one in your life who knows and loves you quite like your mother does. She’s been there since the day you were born, and she began sharing her wisdom with you long before you first headed off to school. To celebrate Mother’s Day, we’ve rounded up some of the powerful lessons that Disney mothers (and grandmothers) have taught us throughout the years. And for an additional holiday treat, you can also follow this link to our collection of Mother’s Day phone backgrounds to share with your Mom on her special day!

Coco

1. “Never forget how much your family cares for you.”—Mamá Imelda, Disney•Pixar’s Coco
Because Miguel’s family banned music from their lives, he never felt that they supported his dream to follow in the footsteps of his favorite musician, Ernesto de la Cruz. Many times, Miguel’s great-great-grandmother Mamá Imelda tries to make him promise to forget about music. But when it is time for Miguel to return to the Land of the Living, Mamá Imelda insists that he make a different promise: to remember that, no matter what, his family will always love him—because that is what family is for.

Incredibles 2

2. “You have more power than you realize.”—Mrs. Incredible, The Incredibles
Since Violet had to hide her powers for so many years, she doesn’t have a lot of confidence in herself when she uses them. Mrs. Incredible tells her not to worry, though—being a hero is in Violet’s blood, and she is stronger than she thinks she is. It’s proof that you should always trust a mother to know what you are capable of, even if you don’t—especially if you don’t.

Black Panther

3. “Show them who you are.”—Queen Ramonda, Black Panther
When it is time for T’Challa to ascend the throne, he’s unsure about what sort of a king he wants to be: Should he continue the traditions that have been passed down for years, or should he begin to change Wakanda and follow his own path? When he fights to prove himself as a leader at Warrior Falls, his mother reminds him that he has always been a king—he just needs to show that side of himself to everyone else, including those who would challenge him.

4. “Love is infinite; you can always make more when you need it.”—Emily Barnes, Twitches
When Camryn finds her twin sister and birth mother, a part of her feels guilty for loving them when she has wonderful parents she’s known all her life. Her adoptive mother, Emily, gives her a great bit of advice: There’s no such thing as a limit on love. Just because there are more people to love in her life doesn’t mean that Camryn has to choose who to love—it just means that there are more people to love her back.

Tarzan

5. “You will always be in my heart.”—Kala, Tarzan
Tarzan struggled for a long time because he didn’t look like the rest of his gorilla family, but his mother, Kala, never let him feel as though he was less important because he was different. When Tarzan considers leaving the jungle to be with his own kind, Kala supports his decision and reminds him that a mother’s love never ends—their hearts go with their children forever.

Camp Rock 2

6. “You are so much more than you can see.”—Connie Torres, Camp Rock
When Mitchie arrives at Camp Rock, she’s so intimidated by all of the stars around her that she lies about who she is just to fit in. When her secret comes out, her mother reminds her that it doesn’t matter if she doesn’t have any famous relatives—Mitchie is already amazing, all on her own. She simply needs to believe in herself enough to see that. Connie admits that she is a little biased, of course, but a mother’s opinion counts for a lot—probably more than anyone else’s.

Moana

7. “There is nowhere you could go where I won’t be with you.”—Gramma Tala, Moana
Throughout her entire life Moana has dreamed of sailing beyond the reef, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t a little nervous when it’s time to go—especially when that means she’ll be leaving her beloved grandmother behind. But Gramma Tala reminds Moana of an important fact: Just because your family is not with you in person doesn’t mean they are not with you at all. Family is with you wherever you are.

Cinderella

8. “Have courage and be kind.”—Ella’s Mother, Cinderella (2015)
It’s easy to let life turn you bitter when things don’t go the way you want them to, just like Ella’s stepmother. Ella chooses to take her mother’s advice to heart instead—to have courage and to be kind. The lesson reminds her to stay strong and true to herself—no matter what her family throws at her—and to make the world a kinder place by doing so.

Everything We Know About the Once Upon A Time Series Finale

By William Keck

The final chapters of ABC’s Once Upon A Time have been written, and fans will finally learn the fates of all their favorite fairytale characters in the two-part series finale airing Friday, May 11, and Friday, May 18 at 8 p.m. ET/7p.m. CT. Everyone in the D23 community should be overjoyed to know that series creators and executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz crafted the big send-off with us Disney fans in mind!

Once Upon a time season finale
Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis

And here’s a D23 exclusive: Keep an eye out for a very familiar pixie waving her wand in front of a very familiar castle. This, of course, is a nod to the iconic opening credits sequence of the long-running TV series The Wonderful World of Disney, where Tinker Bell uses her wand to create a fabulous fireworks display in front of Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle.

The primary objective of the finale, Horowitz says, was “to capture that hope and optimism that Disney movies have always brought.”

Once Upon a time season finale
Dania Ramirez

The star-studded finale features appearances from virtually all of the best-loved fairy tale characters who have passed through the fictional Storybrooke and the Enchanted Forest over the past seven fanciful seasons. “It’s going to be really magical to see all these characters come in and fight a common cause together,” teases the show’s Cinderella, actress Dania Ramirez. “When am I ever again going to be able to say that I got to work with my grandmother-in-law Snow White?”

Once Upon a time season finale
Robert Carlyle as Mr. Gold

Executive producer David Goodman believes it’s not a stretch to compare Once’s finale to Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War, in that the show’s greatest heroes are uniting to take down the biggest baddie they have ever seen—that being “Robert Carlyle as the crazy, gold-spinning Rumple, who we haven’t seen in a while,” says Goodman.

Expect happily-ever-after reunions for all the favorite couples: Snow and Charming, Belle and Mr. Gold, Hook and Emma, Alice and Robin. Plus, we’ll see the return of such long-absent Storybrooke favorites as Grumpy, Geppetto, Jiminy Cricket, the Blue Fairy, and even Ariel, the Little Mermaid, played by Joanna Garcia Swisher. “I have the ability to swim through realms,” reminds Garcia Swisher. “So when she’s called for help, she’s there!”

Once Upon a time season finale
Lana Parrilla as Evil Queen

“Everything does come to a beautiful, happy ending,” assures Lana Parrilla, whose Evil Queen has seen a considerable softening of the heart as the seasons progressed. “We will not disappoint. Having the old gang back put the biggest smile on my face. It felt like they never left. When I first saw Ginny [Goodwin, who plays Snow White] and Josh [Dallas, Prince Charming] back on set I ran off the stage and took both in my arms because I hadn’t seen them in so long.”

Kitsis and Horowitz say the return of their Snow White and Charming in the final hour of the May 18 episode gave them chills. And they expect fans to have a similar reaction. “They have my favorite dramatic entrance since we met Lana Parrilla’s Evil Queen in the pilot,” says Kitsis, with Horowitz adding, “We’ve watched this moment probably a hundred times and we clap every single time.”

While working on their series’ swan song, the creative duo took into consideration what they learned from working on their last series finale: the much-hyped and polarizing 2010 final episode of Lost. “We learned to trust your instincts and follow your heart and vision,” explains Kitsis. “The thing I loved most about the Lost finale was that it was about the characters and their journey. And I think we did the same for our show. We want the fans to love it, of course, but we ourselves have to leave it knowing we did what we wanted.”

The Memories that Leave the Once Upon A Time Stars Feeling Happy Ever After

By William Keck

When Ginnifer Goodwin landed her childhood dream role of Snow White on ABC’s Once Upon a Time, she never could have imagined just how dramatically her life would change. Her on-screen Prince Charming, actor Josh Dallas, would become her real-life husband, and together they would become parents to a pair of princes: sons Oliver, just shy of 4, and Hugo, almost 2. Goodwin and Dallas are beyond excited to show their sons the show on which mommy met daddy. “They’ll also be able to see both of their pregnancies,” notes Goodwin.

Once Upon a time Finale event
Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas

“Yes, they’re going to see themselves inside mommy’s tummy,” says Dallas, smiling like a proud papa. “And they’re going to see mom and dad meeting in that first season. I can’t wait to show them ‘Snow Falls,’ the third episode of the first season when Charming catches Snow in the net.”

Once Upon a time Finale event
Joanna Garcia Swisher and Ginnifer Goodwin

Actress Joanna Garcia Swisher, who had just given birth to her daughter Emerson, now 5, when she was first hired to portray Ariel and slip into the Little Mermaid’s tail, knows firsthand the joy in store for Goodwin and Dallas as their children grow up to realize their parents are Disney royalty.

“Some of my best, most emotional conversations on set were with Ginny about becoming a mother,” recalls Garcia Swisher, who was able to bring her daughter to the show’s Vancouver set. “Emerson got to meet Aladdin, Princess Jasmine, and Jafar—all in costume. Colin O’Donoghue (Captain Hook) let her try on his hook and the prop department let her take some seashells and little trinkets from my treasure trove. It was all so real in her mind.”

But Dallas and Goodwin say their sons aren’t quite old enough to comprehend what’s real and what’s not in Once’s imaginative world.

“Oliver does understand that live-action entertainment is pretend, which we had to teach him because he was getting scared by watching certain things,” explains Goodwin. “That made it easier for him to understand what mommy and daddy do for a living. But he does think animation is real.” Just the other day in their car Oliver asked his parents how to get to Zootopia, as if Disney’s mammalian metropolis were an actual location found on a map.

Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz

While the finale promises happy endings for all the fan favorites, over the past seasons, many characters—particularly the villains—have taken their final breaths. Most recently it was Mother Gothel, played by actress Emma Booth, whose life was cut short. Though disappointed to miss the series‘ final four hours, Booth is grateful that the writers gave her wicked alter ego a memorable swan song. “[Executive producers] Eddie Kitsis and Adam Horowitz called and said, ‘She’s too evil to turn good, so we’re just gonna turn her into a tree,’” recalls Booth. “I thought that was awesome. She’s Mother Earth, so how could you think of anything better?”

Beyond being a fanciful fantasy series that offered joy to millions around the globe, many in the cast applaud the show’s bravery in casting a diverse rainbow of actors in leading roles and representing all kinds of love.

Once Upon a time Finale event
Rose Reynolds and Tiera Skovbye

Rose Reynolds, who plays Alice in Wonderland, commends the writers for conceiving a storyline that paired Alice romantically with actress Tiera Skovbye’s Robin Hood. “I’ve had a lot of people in the LGBTQ community saying, ‘Thank you for representing me,’” shares Reynolds. “It’s been important for them to see themselves in Robin and Alice. It’s been very profound and moving for me.”

Once Upon a time Finale event
Dania Ramirez and Emma Booth

Similarly, Latina actress Dania Ramirez knows what it has meant to young girls of color to see her slip into Cinderella’s glass slipper. She recalls getting off a plane and being greeted at LAX airport by an assemblage of four young Latin girls bearing signs expressing their adoration for a princess who looked like them. “They followed me to my car and said, ‘Thank you for representing us on TV,” Ramirez recalls. “It was a really beautiful moment that made me cry.”

Recently, actress Keegan Tracy, who has appeared on and off as the Blue Fairy since the first season, was approached by a little girl at a fan convention who was dressed just like her character. “She was just overjoyed,” recalls Tracy. “When she walked away after meeting me, she did this thing where she jumped up and down and clapped her hands. And I realized, this is exactly why we’ve done this show.”

Icons Celebrate Mickey Mouse’s 90th with Photos by RANKIN

By Courtney Potter

Mickey Mouse… he’s a “true original,” and he celebrates his 90th birthday this year! And to honor this totally historic milestone, icons from the worlds of fashion, film, music, TV, and entertainment—including Disney Legend Mark Hamill; Marvel’s Agent Carter star Hayley Atwell; Disney fan Liv Tyler; Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides costar Sam Claflin, and more—have been photographed by RANKIN in a set of super-stylish portraits to be released in a book to celebrate 90 years of Mickey. It’s all in support of Together for Short Lives, an incredible UK charity that provides vital support to seriously and terminally ill children.

This limited-edition book, Mickey Mouse & Me, will include portraits of the cultural icons—and families who’ve received help from Together for Short Lives—that pay tribute to Mickey’s impact by posing with a special black-and-white Steamboat Willie statue. (As you know, Mickey made his first appearance on screen in that 1928 short!) The book will also feature images of the celebs wearing the iconic ears and giant white gloves Mickey is known for—plus their personal stories about the influence of Walt Disney’s most famous creation on their own lives.

More than 30 celebrities have been photographed for the book, which will be available exclusively on eBay beginning this summer. And as a bonus, a rare shot of RANKIN himself—the renowned photographer and film director behind the portraits—will be seen in the book.

“Mickey Mouse amazed me as a kid,” RANKIN said recently, “and Fantasia made me want to be involved in film. He is much more than a character, but a symbol of optimism, hope, and inspiration for people from every walk of life—and you can see his influence in my photography over the years. This book pays tribute to the inspirational impact he has had on a generation and his journey from simple sketch to cultural icon over 90 years. We’ve had a lot of fun making it, owe a debt of gratitude to those involved, and I hope we raise a lot of money for an incredible charity.”
