Wins for Nomadland and Soul Among Most Magical Moments from the 93rd Oscars®

By Beth Deitchman

Disney releases combined to win five Academy Awards® during The Oscars®, which aired live last night on ABC. Searchlight Pictures’ Nomadland earned three Oscars: Best Motion Picture, Best Actress in a Leading Role, and a history-making win for its director, Chloé Zhao. Zhao became the first Chinese woman to receive the Oscar for Best Achievement in Directing and she’s just the second woman to win the award in the Oscars’ 93-year history.

Chloé Zhao

As she reflected on her Nomadland journey and on what inspires her to keep going, Zhao expressed her enduring belief that “People are inherently good,” and she shared that she’s found that goodness in people wherever she’s gone in the world. “This,” Zhao said, “is for anyone who had the faith and the courage to hold on to the goodness in themselves and to hold on to the goodness in each other, no matter how difficult it is to do that.”

Frances McDormand

Frances McDormand stars in Nomadland as Fern, who packs up her van and takes to the road to explore life outside of conventional society, following the death of her husband and the economic collapse of the Nevada mining town she’s called home. Accepting her award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, she said, “I have no words. My voice is in my sword. We know the sword is our work. And I like work. Thank you for knowing that, and thanks for this.”

Disney and Pixar’s Soul—the film that asks the question, “What is it that makes you…YOU?”—received two Oscars for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score. As home to Disney and Pixar’s Soul, Disney+ received its first Oscar wins since launching in 2019. Additionally, Soul earned Pixar the studio’s 11th Best Animated Feature Film award, and it marks the third Oscar for Soul director and Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter, who previously won for Up and Inside Out.

Soul

“This film started as a love letter to jazz but we had no idea how much jazz would teach us about life. We don’t get to control what happens but we can, like a jazz musician, turn whatever happens into something of value and beauty,” said Docter, who accepted the Oscar for Best Animated Feature with the film’s producer, Dana Murray. Noting that Soul’s protagonist, Joe Gardner, is a music teacher, Docter expressed his gratitude to music and art teachers everywhere. “You make the world a better place,” Docter said, adding, “My wish for all of us tonight is that we can follow the example of jazz musicians, wherever we are, whatever we have, and turn it into something beautiful.”

Soul

The film’s unforgettable music, which drifts between the real and soul worlds, was also honored with the Oscar for Best Original Score. “You know what’s deep is God gave us 12 notes, it’s the same 12 notes Duke Ellington had, Bach had… Nina Simone,” Batiste said. “Every contribution with music that comes from the divine into the instruments, into the film, into the minds and hearts and souls of every person who hears it, the stories that happen when you listen to it and watch it and the stories you share, the moments you create, the memories you make. Man, it’s just so incredibly special.”

Of course, the Oscar wins weren’t the only Disney magic we experienced during the live broadcast, which the show’s producers created with an “awards-show-as-a-movie approach.”

Disney fans watching The Oscars on ABC were the first to see the inaugural teaser trailer for Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, from 20th Century Studios. The new film adaptation of the musical West Side Story will open in U.S. theaters on December 10, 2021.

Academy Award winner Steven Spielberg directs from a screenplay by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award® winner Tony Kushner. This reimagining of the beloved musical, which tells the classic tale of fierce rivalries and young love in 1957 New York City, stars Ansel Elgort (Tony); Rachel Zegler (María); Ariana DeBose (Anita); David Alvarez (Bernardo); Mike Faist (Riff); Josh Andrés Rivera (Chino); Ana Isabelle (Rosalía); Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank); Brian d’Arcy James (Officer Krupke); and Rita Moreno (as Valentina, who owns the corner store in which Tony works). Moreno, who is one of only three artists to be honored with Academy, Emmy®, GRAMMY®, Tony®, and Peabody Awards, also serves as one of the film’s executive producers.

The film’s creative team brings together the best of both Broadway and Hollywood and includes Kushner, who also serves as an executive producer; Tony Award winner Justin Peck, who choreographed the musical numbers in the film; renowned Los Angeles Philharmonic conductor and GRAMMY Award winner Gustavo Dudamel, who helmed the recording of the iconic score; Academy Award-nominated composer and conductor David Newman (Anastasia), who arranged the score; Tony Award-winning composer Jeanine Tesori (Fun Home, Thoroughly Modern Millie), who supervised the cast on vocals; and Grammy-nominated music supervisor Matt Sullivan (Beauty and the Beast, Chicago), who served as executive music producer for the film. The film is produced by Spielberg, Academy Award-nominated producer Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Tony Award-winning producer Kevin McCollum. West Side Story has been adapted for the screen from the original 1957 Broadway show, with book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and concept, direction, and choreography by Jerome Robbins.

Your Guide to a Dino-Mite Disney+ Marathon

By Jocelyn Buhlman

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the fan-favorite ABC television series Dinosaurs, which means only one thing: It’s time for a re-watch! If you are a dinosaur enthusiast, (much like this author) you might ask yourself: Why stop there? Your journey into the dinos of Disney has only begun, and thanks to Disney+ making all our streams come true, we can keep watching more about our primeval pals in these epic movies and series that are now streaming

Dinosaurs

Dinosaurs
Today’s the 30th anniversary of the funniest family from 60 million and three, BC—so it makes sense to kick off your T-rex-cellent marathon with this classic ABC series showcasing awesome character design from Jim Henson Associates and a Jurassic twist on the humor in everyday life. Catch all four seasons of the Emmy Award®-winning series on Disney+ and you’ll be roaring with laughter in no time.

Dinosaur

Dinosaur
The next item in your Dinosaur-themed marathon is helpfully named Dinosaur. And boy, is that title not lying: You will definitely be seeing a lot of cool dinosaurs in this animated film from 2000 about an Iguanodon named Aladar who was raised by Lemurs, only to rejoin his own kind during a mass migration. It’s a fish-out-of-water story anyone can relate to—human or dinosaur—and it features a visually awesome combination of computer-generated animation and live-action backgrounds.

The Good Dinosaur

The Good Dinosaur
Okay, listen: While all dinosaurs are good dinosaurs, only one of them is The Good Dinosaur, the titular character of Pixar’s 2015 movie. This film is a twist on the “boy and his dog” tale—instead it’s a story about a dino and his boy! Arlo has to adventure back to his home after being caught in a storm, while overcoming his fears of the world around him in the process.

Fantasia

Fantasia
This film was groundbreaking for its gorgeous animation combined with some of the best classical music, creating an amazing illustration of how sight and sound come together to move us emotionally and delight our senses. On top of that, it has an extremely epic dinosaur sequence that went on to inspire the Primeval World scenes in the Disneyland Railroad. If you’re just watching for dinosaurs, keep your ears open for the Rite of Spring sequence, which culminates in an iconic battle between a T-Rex and a Stegosaur.

Meet the Robinsons

Meet the Robinsons
Fine, we’ll be honest: Most of this movie isn’t about dinosaurs. However, when there is a dinosaur, it’s in the form of an extremely memorable mind-controlled T-Rex named Tiny, who was originally the family pet of the Robinsons before falling under mind control by the mysterious Bowler Hat Guy. If you’re really dedicated to Tiny the T-Rex, we also recommend rewatching Wreck-It Ralph and keeping an eye out for Tiny’s cameo during one of the film’s Game Central Station sequences.

Toy Story

The Toy Story Films and Toy Story That Time Forgot
If you’ve read this far into the article, you might be the kind of dinosaur enthusiast who had plastic versions of our favorite prehistoric pals. Relive your childhood memories of dinosaurs ruling the earth (and your toy box) with the Toy Story Films. Rex, an anxious dino we can’t help but love, is featured in all four films—but to maximize your number of dinosaurs, be sure to watch Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4 which feature Trixie the triceratops along with Rex. Finish up your Toy Story dinosaur extravaganza with Toy Story That Time Forgot, an animated short featuring our favorite Toy Story friends in a new adventure with some extremely epic dinosaur-themed action figures.

Bizarre Dinosaurs

Bizarre Dinosaurs
Now that you’ve enjoyed fictional tales of dazzling dinosaurs, dive into National Geographic’s movie about the strangest dinosaurs who once roamed the Earth! Paleontologists take us inside the lives of the strangest of the strange dinosaurs and discover how they got that way.

22 vs. Earth

Disney and Pixar’s New Short 22 vs. Earth Debuting on Disney+ April 30

Have you found yourself wondering what 22 (voiced by Tina Fey) really had against Earth in Disney and Pixar’s hit Soul? Wonder no more—because 22 is coming back in a brand-new short directed by 21-year Pixar veteran Kevin Nolting…

22 vs. Earth, with Fey reprising her role, revisits the skeptical soul in The Great Before, long before she ever met Joe Gardner. As the short unfolds, 22 defies the rules of The Great Before and refuses to go to Earth, enlisting a gang of five other new souls in her attempt at rebellion. However, as the souls’ activities lead to unexpected results, 22’s subversive plot may actually lead to a surprising revelation about the meaning of life.

“While making Soul, we talked about the why of a new soul not wanting to live on Earth, but it didn’t ultimately belong in that movie,” says Nolting. “22 vs. Earth was a chance to explore some of the unanswered questions we had about why 22 was so cynical. As a fairly cynical person myself, it felt like perfect material.”

Look for 22 vs. Earth streaming exclusively on Disney+ beginning Friday, April 30!

First Look at Marvel Studios’ Shang Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings

Earlier this week, just as Simu Liu—star of the highly anticipated Shang Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings—celebrated his birthday by revealing some of the film’s posters to fans on Instagram and Twitter, Marvel Studios surprised him by releasing a first-look teaser trailer for the film… and what a birthday surprise it was! See the action-packed clip for yourself, if you haven’t already, above.

In the film, Liu portrays Shang-Chi, who must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization. The film also stars Tony Leung as Wenwu, Awkwafina as Katy, and Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan—with Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Florian Munteanu, and Ronny Chieng. As Liu explained in his social posts, “It’s absolutely insane to think that in just over four months, we will have a @MarvelStudios movie featuring an almost ENTIRELY Asian cast, each full of rich nuance and dimensionality. Shang Chi is more than just a movie. It is a celebration of our culture and a rallying cry for the forgotten, the unseen, and the overlooked.”

Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and produced by Kevin Feige and Jonathan Schwartz, with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and Charles Newirth serving as executive producers. David Callaham & Destin Daniel Cretton & Andrew Lanham wrote the screenplay for the film, which opens in theaters on September 3, 2021.

Disney Movie Insiders

Disney Movie Insiders Mobile App Brings the Captain America Shield to You!

Feel like you’ve stepped inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with the latest from the Disney Movie Insiders mobile app! A new app update gives users the power to carry the Captain America shield for themselves… virtually, at least.

With this new unique augmented reality experience, app users can transform their space into an immersive training ground and take aim at targets; channel the power of the shield’s history; and train like Captain America! After scanning the immediate area, the app automatically generates targets in the play area. The more targets hit—and the more accurate users aim—the more shields are unlocked, featuring different ones spanning the entire MCU, including the trash can Steve Rogers picks up in the alleyway of Captain America: The First Avenger as well as the upgrade seen in Avengers: Infinity War. Pretty cool, right? Another section of the app lets you snap photos with the shields unlocked in-game to share with friends on social media.

Do note that “Wield the Shield” is only available on iOS devices that are XS, XR, and newer; and “Shield Challenge” and “Honor the Legacy” are available on iOS devices, iPhone 6s and newer.

A Look Back at the Oscars®—The Living Desert

By Christina Pappous Walt Disney Archives

As the 93rd Academy Awards® ceremony approaches, we’re taking a look at some of Walt Disney’s Oscar winners. In the spirit of Earth Day, let’s shine a light on the flora and fauna of The Living Desert (1953)! Though not the first of the True-Life Adventure films to be honored with an Oscar, The Living Desert reflected Walt’s assertion that the series “did not succumb to the alluring temptations to make villains or saints of the creatures portrayed in our films. We have maintained a sensitive regard for the wisdom of Nature’s design and have attempted to hold a mirror to the out-of-doors rather than to interpret its functioning by man’s standards.”

What inspired Walt to send his camera crew to the sandy and sun-drenched wilds of Arizona’s Sonora Desert? It was a life and death battle between a Pepsis wasp and a tarantula—or rather, it was the footage of such a scrap. As a graduate student at UCLA, Paul Kenworthy had captured this deadly encounter on film in order to complete his M.A. thesis. Looking for employment, he had an opportunity to show the material to Disney staff involved in the True-Life Adventures, including director James Algar and writer Winston Hibler. In Kenworthy’s recollection, “after some minutes of projection, word got to Walt that he should drop by for a look.”

Walt’s enthusiasm convinced Kenworthy to produce more and soon, the photographer and fellow cameraman Robert Crandall were assigned to film for three months in the Sonora desert, generating copious footage of peccaries, kangaroo rats and other “local” residents. Previous True-Life Adventures, like Seal Island and Beaver Valley, were featurettes, and ran about 30 minutes in length. Walt was initially reluctant to make them any longer but with The Living Desert, he felt there was sufficient material to shape into a feature-length documentary to be distributed by the newly formed Buena Vista Distribution Company. Walt’s instincts paid off and subsequently, The Living Desert won the Academy Award® for Best Documentary Feature at the 1954 Academy Awards.
