First Disney Store Opens in Glendale, California

Disney Store made its debut on this date in the Glendale Galleria. The first Store design was Hollywood-themed because in the early days, it was believed that every Store’s interior theme would reflect its immediate community. On opening day, people turned out by the hundreds to see Disney’s first retail store outside of a theme park or resort. Throughout Disney Store’s history, several different Disney-themed retail concepts were created, including: Mickey’s Kitchen, a “healthy” fast food restaurant, The Walt Disney Gallery, offering Disney art and collectible merchandise, ESPN The Store (featuring sports-themed product), and U.S. airport locations (featuring city-specific and travel-related items).
