Disney twenty-three Celebrates 60 Magical Years of Disneyland

As Disneyland approaches its 60th anniversary, Disney twenty-three brings readers inside the party, with an in-depth look at how the park is celebrating this milestone with new parades, spectaculars, and enhancements to popular attractions. In preparation for the landmark occasion, D23: The Official Disney Fan Club took Disney Legend Marty Sklar—who worked at Disneyland on opening day—and Walt Disney Imagineering Chief Creative Executive Bruce Vaughn on a walk through Disneyland, where they reminisce about details from the past, such as the park’s legendary opening day, and look ahead at all the excitement yet to come.

Also in the Summer issue, available exclusively to D23 Gold Members, the Walt Disney Archives unveils rarely showcased ephemera from Disneyland’s opening including a media pass and concept art for freeway billboards promoting the world’s first theme park. And for Disney parks foodies, there’s a look at some of the park’s signature snacks, from Dole Whips and turkey legs to churros and Mickey Mouse ice cream bars.

Plus, film critic, historian, and co-producer of the Walt Disney Treasures DVD series Leonard Maltin gives a behind-the-scenes look at Disney’s three big summer movies featuring exclusive interviews with Tomorrowland director Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Ratatouille), Inside Out director Pete Docter (Monsters, Inc., Up), and Ant-Man director Peyton Reed. Each director offers Maltin—who authored the book The Disney Films—a fascinating look at the creation of the colorful, complicated, and magnificent worlds of their three films.

Also included in the Summer issue of Disney twenty-three:

  • Rarely seen photos from the Disneyland Hotel’s storied history
  • A look inside a Disneyland Pitch Portfolio that was used to sell East Coast investors on Walt’s vision for the park
  • Fifty years of Disney Ambassadors and how they bring magic to people around the globe
  • Newlyweds share the stories of their beautiful Disney-themed weddings
  • An up-close look at the beloved animated feature Pinocchio with historian J.B. Kaufman
  • Regular columns including A Walk with Walt, D Society, and Ask Dave

D23 Members are invited to visit D23.com for additional online-exclusive features, including a gallery of more artwork from the Disneyland Pitch Portfolio, used to showcase concepts of the park that would turn Walt’s dream into a reality.

Other features coming to D23.com include:

  • Disney Legend Marty Sklar talking about the past and future of Disneyland as the park celebrates its 60th anniversary
  • A robust gallery of images of Disneyland through the years
  • A dazzling display of wedding cakes to bring a sweet finish to any Disney fan’s wedding, from classic confections to truly innovative tastes for all the senses

Disney twenty-three, which is delivered directly to fans’ doorsteps, is offered exclusively to D23 Gold Members as a benefit of their membership. The latest issue will begin arriving late May.

Take a Spin Through Disney Dances

Finding the perfect dress. Renting the coolest tux. Getting your hair and makeup professionally done. Fumbling with the corsage as you try to pin it on your date’s lapel. Dancing with all your friends. And, after all is said and done… memories to last a lifetime.

It’s prom season across America, so dances (and balls—their fancier, fairy-tale-esque cousin) are on everyone’s mind… including ours!

So strap on those dancing shoes and check out some of Disney’s most memorable dances.

Dorothy McGuire and Hayley Mills dancing in Summer Magic

“The Ugly Bug Ball”

The 1963 Disney film Summer Magic, starring Dorothy McGuire and Hayley Mills, features a ditty called “The Ugly Bug Ball.” Sung by the legendary Burl Ives, the song tells the tale of two bugs who fall in love while dancing. Bonus fact: It was written by Richard and Robert Sherman of Mary Poppins and “it’s a small world” fame.

Will Friedle and Elisabeth Harnois dancing in My Date with the President's Daughter

My Date with the President’s Daughter

Duncan (Boy Meets World co-star Will Friedle), just your average teenager, meets pretty Hallie (Elisabeth Harnois) at the mall… Little does he know her father (Dabney Coleman) is the leader of the free world! This 1998 Wonderful World of Disney TV movie centers on Duncan and Hallie’s hilarious attempts to get to his high school dance.

Hayley Mills dancing in The Parent Trap

The Parent Trap

Mischief and mayhem erupt at a dance after identical teenagers Susan and Sharon (both played by Hayley Mills) meet for the first time at summer camp. (Doesn’t it always seem like mischief, mayhem, and dancing go hand in hand?) In the dance’s aftermath, the twins decide to work together to reunite their divorced parents (Maureen O’Hara and Brian Keith).

Angela Lansbury and David Tomlinson dancing in Bedknobs and Broomsticks, the 1971 Disney favorite

“Beautiful Briny Ballroom”

Bedknobs and Broomsticks, the 1971 Disney favorite starring Angela Lansbury and David Tomlinson, features an extended sequence in one of the coolest “ballrooms” ever seen. Live action and animation combined to make it look like Miss Price and Professor Browne are dancing alongside all manner of sea creatures.

Doug dancing with Patti

Doug’s 1st Movie

The 1999 Walt Disney Pictures animated film follows nice-guy Doug as he fights for the love of crush Patti while simultaneously trying to save a kindly lake monster (named Herman, after the Moby Dick author) from the clutches of town menace Bill Bluff. The final confrontation takes place at the big school dance!

Annette Funicello in the Monkey's Uncle

The Monkey’s Uncle

Nothing like a big college dance to kick off a shenanigans-filled movie like 1965’s The Monkey’s Uncle. In case having a chimpanzee as a co-star wasn’t crazy enough, Annette Funicello’s Jennifer spends the opening sequence dancing to the Beach Boys (yes, the real Beach Boys!) at a Midvale College dance.

Caterpillars dancing in the Silly Symphony Woodland Cafe

Woodland Café

An early Silly Symphony cartoon, released in 1937, takes place at a popular bug nightclub (don’t you wish you could visit something like that?!). Caterpillars, fireflies, spiders, and other insects dance the evening away—and some even look like famous Hollywood celebrities, including actor Lionel Barrymore.

Kim Possible dancing

Disney’s Kim Possible Movie: So the Drama

In this Disney Channel Original Movie from 2005, heroine Kim is totally swept off her feet by Erik, a new guy at school. He asks her to the junior prom, which makes Kim’s best friend Ron more than a little jealous. Adventure ensues when evil Dr. Drakken kidnaps Kim’s father—and it’s up to Ron to snap Kim out of her love-struck trance so she can save the day!

No Fairy Godmother Needed—There’s a Real-Life Cinderella Prom Dress

Every girl dreams of looking like a princess on prom night, but this year the new Disney Forever Enchanted Cinderella Collection by Ashdon makes it possible! The crown jewel of the collection is this Cinderella Keepsake Gown, directly inspired by the beautiful and ornate dress worn by Lily James in Cinderella. From the butterfly-trimmed bodice to the sequin-covered skirt, all you need to complete the look is a pair of glass slippers.

The Disney Forever Enchanted Cinderella Collection is available at specialty and formal wear retailers across the US and Canada, but this Cinderella Keepsake Gown can be found exclusively at Promgirl.com and Simplydresses.com.

The Muppets Return to ABC—And More in News Briefs

ABC Upfronts: New Series Offer Muppets and Much, Much More!

ABC took over Avery Fisher Hall at NYC’s Lincoln Center this afternoon to announce their 2015–16 Primetime TV schedule… and it’s pretty spectacular. (Four words: “Kermit’s back on television!”) Besides returning faves like Scandal, The Bachelor, Marvel’s Agent Carter, and Nashville, a whopping 10 new shows are set to take up permanent residence in your nighttime schedule (not to mention your DVR)—and there’s something for everyone:

The Muppets: No, your eyes don’t deceive you. The Muppets are returning to primetime, courtesy of The Big Bang Theory co-creator (and former Muppets writer) Bill Prady! (Watch the hilarious trailer, above.)

The Catch: From Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal) and Betsy Beers comes a new drama centered on a strong, successful fraud investigator who’s about to be the victim of fraud herself… by her own fiancé.

Wicked City: This new drama follows a unique police investigation of a serial murder case, all set against L.A.’s infamous, drug-fueled “punk” era…

Dr. Ken: Doctor-turned-actor/comedian Ken Jeong (Community, The Hangover) plays Dr. Ken, a brilliant physician with absolutely no bedside manner.

The Family: This thriller follows the return of a politician’s son who was presumed dead after disappearing over 10 years ago. As the mysterious young man is welcomed back into his family, suspicions emerge—is he really who he says he is?

The Real O’Neals: A fresh, funny look at a seemingly faultless Catholic family whose lives take an unexpected turn when surprising truths are revealed.

Of Kings and Prophets: An epic Biblical saga of faith, ambition, and betrayal as told through the eyes of a battle-weary king; a powerful and resentful prophet; and a resourceful young shepherd on a collision course with destiny.

Uncle Buck: Based on the hit 1989 movie of the same name, Uncle Buck (comedian/rapper Mike Epps) is a fun-loving but irresponsible guy who takes a job as a nanny for his brother and sister-in-law’s family.

Oil: A young couple dreams of a new life beyond their working class roots—so they move to “The Bakken” in North Dakota, a town now booming after the biggest oil discovery in American history, and find themselves pitted against a ruthless tycoon (executive producer Don Johnson, Nash Bridges).

Quantico: A diverse group of recruits, the best and the brightest, arrives at the FBI Quantico Base for training. It’s impossible that one of them is suspected of masterminding the biggest attack on New York City since 9/11… right?

Other returning ABC series include Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., black-ish, Galavant, The Goldbergs, Grey’s Anatomy, Castle, Once Upon a Time, How to Get Away with Murder, and Dancing with the Stars. For a complete rundown of all the renewed shows, check out ABC.com.

Fans lined up outside the Haunted Mansion on Saturday, May 9, for their first glimpse of the Hatbox Ghost… and he did not disappoint. Climb into our virtual Doom Buggy and see how he was brought to, well, life by watching this behind-the-scenes clip from our friends at Walt Disney Imagineering, above.

Cliffhangers, Twists, and Big Changes: ABC Season Finale Preview

The season finales of our favorite ABC shows are always a little bittersweet: they’re so exciting and action-packed, but we don’t get to watch new episodes until the fall! To make sure you don’t miss a beat, here’s a preview of some of the big moments you can expect in ABC’s season finales.

Once Upon A Time (May 10):

Thanks to a 120-minute finale we get “two chapters,” if you will, of this fairy-tale fan favorite. Now that Gold has The Author in his grasp, look for a topsy-turvy world where the villains are heroes and the heroes… Well, the heroes are in some deep pixie dust, and it doesn’t look like anyone (except for maybe Gold) will actually get a happy ending. It’s up to Henry to save his family and his friends before the ink dries on anyone’s “revised” story. And the end culminates with a twist so shocking, viewers will think Elsa coming out of the portal last year was just another day in Storybrooke.

Castle (May 11):

Early in Season 7, fans learned that an 11-year-old Castle witnessed, well, something in Hollander’s Woods. We don’t know what Castle saw, but we know that it was a defining event that set him on the course to becoming a mystery writer. In Castle’s season finale, a death in the woods forces Castle to revisit this secret from his childhood. His investigation turns into an obsession, which puts Castle at the center of a mystery that has gone unsolved for decades. We’re hoping that we’ll only have to wait until the end of the episode to have our questions answered.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (May 12):

What could be better than one hour of Marvel goodness? How about two hours? The bad news is that with the episode titled, “S.O.S.,” that pretty much implies a lot of not-so-marvelous (sorry, we had to) things are going to go down. S.H.I.E.L.D. puts everything on the line to survive a war that blurs the lines between friend and foe. Look for Coulson and the team to make some shocking sacrifices that are game-changers for everyone.

050715_spring-finales-what-to-expect-feat-4

The Middle (May 13):

If there’s anything we’ve learned, it’s that life with the Hecks is always, well, hectic. Changes are on the horizon for everyone, with Axl encountering girl drama, Sue’s graduation on the brink of ruin, and Brick presented with an unexpected opportunity. Let’s just hope everything turns out better than the Mother’s Day fiasco from this week’s episode.

050715_spring-finales-what-to-expect-feat-5

The Goldbergs (May 13):

When we last left the family, Erica had her heart set on admission to Juilliard, and Barry was finally getting on Lainey’s father’s good side. But the end of the school year brings new challenges, with Beverly and Murray unsure of how to react to Erica leaving the nest for a few weeks. Plus, Barry has a new scheme to get closer to Lainey—and it involves being the school mascot.

050715_spring-finales-what-to-expect-feat-6

Nashville (May 13):

As Juliette remains intensely focused on finishing her new album, Avery makes a decision that will change their lives forever. And just when Rayna and Deacon finally looked like they were going to be able to make beautiful music together this year, Deacon’s life now hangs in the balance with Rayna and the girls at his side for whatever the future may bring.

A Toy (Designer’s) Story

Ever since the first sets of Vinylmation were released in 2008, they have been popular collector items for Disney fans of all ages. The 3-inch figures in the famous mold of Mickey Mouse have been created with themes that range from Mickey and his friends to Muppets, and much more.

A recent release features designs inspired by the first season of the popular Emmy Award®-winning Mickey Mouse shorts, and were created by a character designer on the show, Tara Billinger, a self-professed toy lover and huge Disney fan.

“I go to Disneyland at least once every other week,” Billinger confessed.

She’s also an active part of the online community that dedicates itself to discussing, critiquing, and simply just enjoying Disney toys. As an avid collector, Billinger finds herself shopping and interacting with fellow toy lovers on websites from all over the globe.

“A lot of people love the Mickey Mouse shorts, so I had a feeling that they would love these figures,” she said. “I tried my best to make them appealing, so fans would be like, ‘Oh, that one is from that episode and that one is from that episode.’ When I went to Disneyland to pick up a couple boxes [of the figures], the Cast Member at the counter told me there were so many people buying these. I was so excited to hear how popular they were.”

Scenes from Disney Cartoons
Billinger wanted fans to recognize the designs from episodes they remembered enjoying.

Tara’s passion for toy design and creation extends into her personal life as well, making her own toys that she displays and sells at conventions across the country. One look at her desk, blanketed with toys and collectibles (mostly Disney), and there’s no mistaking what makes her happy in life.

After spending some time in Southern California at a young age, Tara mostly grew up in Utah, where she dreamed of becoming an animator. The road to get to where she is wasn’t easy and was peppered with naysayers, but she was ready to make her dream come true despite the obstacles in her way.

“I grew up with a single mom and couldn’t afford college,” she explained. “I just saved all the money I did have and decided to come out [to L.A.] to see if I could find a job [in animation], and if nothing happened then I’d move back.”

Shortly after arriving, Tara got a job in Development with Disney Television Animation, where she found herself stationed near another Disney fanatic, Paul Rudish, the executive producer and supervising director of the Mickey Mouse shorts. The two would happily talk about their love of all things Disney, and formed a bond that would eventually land Tara an opportunity of a lifetime working on the show.

“I get to draw the characters in cool poses all day long,” she said beaming. “I’m a big animation nut and I love the classic characters, and I’m obsessed with the history. I’m so grateful to be a part of the show.”

Tara Billinger and Disney Vinylmation Toys

It’s not often that people have the opportunity to be employed working on three of their greatest passions in life, but for Tara, she could not have dreamed of a more exciting job, where Disney, animation, and toys take center stage every day.

While only some of her Vinylmation designs have been released, rest assured, she’s created designs for every season of the show, and did extensive research to ensure they are high-quality figures that all Disney toy fans will enjoy. After all, she might be the biggest one there is.
