How Josh Gad and Olaf’s Frozen Adventure Filmmakers Celebrate the Season

By Courtney Potter

“Love and joy and peace on Earth and tidings of good cheer; do you have tradition things for that time of year?” In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ latest featurette, Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, holly-jolly snowman Olaf (voice of Josh Gad) has tasked himself with finding the perfect holiday tradition to pass along to his best friends, Anna (voice of Kristin Bell) and Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel), and, as evidenced by the quote above (from “That Time of Year,” one of the featurette’s four brand-new songs), he traverses the kingdom of Arendelle—with help from reindeer Sven—to ask its citizens how they celebrate.

So we here at D23 decided to ask the featurette’s filmmakers—directors Kevin Deters and Stevie Wermers-Skelton (Prep & Landing); producer Roy Conli (Oscar® winner for Big Hero 6); songwriters Elyssa Samsel and Kate Anderson; and Olaf himself, Josh Gad—for their own favorite ways to “Ring in the Season.” After reading their answers, you’ll be in the holiday spirit in no time!

Stevie Wermers-Skelton loves putting up her Christmas tree… and dressing up her dogs too!
“I really enjoy putting up the tree,” admits Wermer-Skelton. “That’s kind of my job, with my husband and me. He gets the boxes down—or in this case, up from the basement. And I find all of the ornaments and string the tree together, put all the lights on. He’s responsible for the outside cause he’s crawling up on ladders and whatnot. And then, yeah—making my dogs wear Prep and Landing costumes and taking pictures of them!”

Olaf's Frozen Adventure filmmakers
Kevin Deters

An ornamental coincidence—and some chocolatey treats—bring back memories for Kevin Deters.
As Deters explains, “My wife and I discovered [something] when we first got together and had our own tree at Christmas. The very first ornament that my parents got for me when I was a baby is a little teddy bear holding a trumpet. [Then] my wife pulled out the ornament that her parents had first gotten her when she was a baby—and it’s exactly the same bear! Without the trumpet, but it was still astounding to us. So we always put those up on the tree first, which is pretty special for me.

“Also, I come from a large family in the Midwest, [and] we’re out here in California raising our sons… Growing up, my mother always made a certain kind of cookie at Christmas. They’re called Chocolate Krinkles. They’re essentially extremely sugar-filled bag brownies that you roll in powdered sugar and bake. They’re amazing. And I only ever got them at Christmas—so it’s really fun for me to make them and for my wife to make them with our sons every year. We still do that every year. I eat them until I get sick, I can’t help myself.”

Olaf's Frozen Adventure filmmakers
Elyssa Samsel and Kate Anderson

Speaking of delicious eats, Kate Anderson and her family enjoy lots of Christmas baking.
“Every year my family makes this cookie recipe that we found on the Internet years ago,” Anderson says. “We turn on a Bing Crosby holiday album and spend a morning baking together. For some reason, the recipe makes like 20 dozen cookies, so we end up with every surface of the kitchen and living room covered in chocolate chip cookies for a full day! Then we box them up and give them to neighbors and friends—and watch our own waistlines grow several inches, because once you have one, you just can’t stop. It doesn’t help that the house smells like cookies for a week, so the cravings never cease!”

Memories of Christmas live all year ’round at Roy Conli’s house…
“My favorite holiday tradition now [is], my wife and I go out and we buy a living Christmas tree,” says Conli. “And we plant it on our property at the end of Christmas. Fortunately, we have like a half-acre of property, so I have room to put in a couple of trees once a year. That’s our big thing. We always go to the same place [near Los Angeles]. We buy a tree, bring it home, decorate it, keep it watered. It then sits on our patio for about a month and a half, two months. Then we dig a hole and put it in the ground. I’ve now got several trees out there that we’ve planted.”

Elyssa Samsel and her father have a movie-watching tradition each holiday season.
“It doesn’t feel like Christmas until my dad and I watch both the 1970 film version of Scrooge and Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life,” Samsel explains. “There’s something embedded in those movies that just always wakes up my holiday spirit! It’s all the nostalgia from childhood, when my whole family would watch them together.”

Olaf's Frozen Adventure filmmakers
Josh Gad

…And for Josh Gad, it’s all about experiencing the merry magic through the eyes of his daughters.
Each year, the actor looks forward to seeing his daughters’ reactions on Christmas morning as they discover a personal letter from Santa, as well as a trail of cookie crumbs that serve as indisputable evidence that a visit was paid by St. Nick himself. “That tradition is something that I hope they don’t tire of any time soon, because the second I see that moment in their eyes when they walk down the stairs, it’s more rewarding than any present that they could possibly open—or any other moment during the course of that day. Because it’s so pure, so innocent, like Olaf himself! There’s something just so wonderful about the sky being the limit. The possibilities being endless… it’s something that I truly love.”

Whether you missed Olaf’s Frozen Adventure—which opened ahead of Disney•Pixar’s Coco for a limited time, in theaters around the country—or you’re simply melting to see it again, tune in for its broadcast debut tonight at 8 p.m. ET on ABC!

Jiminy Cricket and the Nine Old Men

By Jim Fanning

The Yuletide season encompasses many an enchanting tradition, and, as no less an authority than Jiminy Cricket pointed out in the beloved Disney TV episode “From All of Us to All of You,” originally telecast in 1958, “one of the nicest things that can happen this time of the year is to receive Christmas cards from your friends.” In keeping with this custom, specially designed holiday greeting cards were sent out annually from Walt Disney and his staff.

Nine Old Men Member Gift item

The Disney Studios Christmas card for the 1939 holiday season is a particularly treasured historical and artistic artifact. The “Season’s Greetings” card was issued as Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) still played in theaters. It was the first animated feature created by Walt and his artists, including the animators who he would come to call the Nine Old Men—for each of the Nine contributed to Snow White in some capacity. Now, in December 1939, Walt’s second feature was waiting in the wings. Pinocchio was slated for release in February 1940, and the Studio holiday card served as a preview. The elaborate card bears the signatures of this group of artisans who lovingly crafted this yet-to-be-unveiled masterpiece, including the signatures of all but one (Marc Davis) of the Nine Old Men.

780w-463h_121317_d23-days-member-gift-seasons-greetings-3

Also found on the beautifully designed greeting are the “signatures” of the new Disney characters created by the Nine Old Men and the rest of the staff, the cast of Pinocchio. Perhaps most significant among them is Jiminy Cricket. Designed and animated by Ward Kimball, Jiminy instantly became a Disney icon when he was introduced as the little woodenhead’s diminutive conscience. One of the many beloved characters created by the Nine Old Men, the winning personality of this cute-as-a-bug little guy is on full display in Ward’s animation drawing of jaunty Jiminy. This expressive drawing is from the merrily memorable “Give a Little Whistle” sequence in Pinocchio.

Nine Old Men Member Gift item

The endearing personality with which Ward infused the cheerfully conscientious cricket made him a true breakout character. Jiminy hopped beyond his role in Pinocchio to become a solo star in storybooks, comic books, and recordings. The new medium of television made the book-smart, street-smart cricket a star all over again in the 1950s, as he spryly expounded on the Mickey Mouse Club series, most notably the “I’m No Fool” safety segments—directed by one of the Nine, Les Clark. Jiminy often leapt into the spotlight on the Disneyland anthology series. He even stepped in to serve as host (and as producer, director, writer, and “everything”) while Walt was on holiday in 1956’s “On Vacation.”

When Jiminy hosted “From All of Us to All of You,” Christmas cards were at the heart of this unforgettable holiday TV treat, for as the chipper cricket explained, “Our gang would like to present their cards and through them share some memorable moments.” Using specially created cards similar to the official Disney Studio cards, Jiminy then introduces scenes from such evergreens as Snow White, Pinocchio, Cinderella (1950), and Peter Pan (1953), all created by Walt Disney and his Nine Old Men. Memorable moments, indeed.

The Walt Disney Company To Acquire Twenty-First Century Fox, Inc., After Spinoff Of Certain Businesses, For $52.4 Billion In Stock

  • Acquisition complements and enhances The Walt Disney Company’s ability to provide consumers around the world with more appealing content and entertainment options
  • Transaction to include 21st Century Fox’s film and television studios, cable entertainment networks and international TV businesses
  • Popular entertainment properties including X-Men, Avatar, The Simpsons, FX Networks and National Geographic to join Disney’s portfolio
  • Expands Disney’s direct-to-consumer offerings with addition of 21st Century Fox’s entertainment content, capabilities in the Americas, Europe and Asia; Hulu stake becomes a controlling interest
  • Addition of extensive international properties, including Star in India and Fox’s 39% ownership of Sky across Europe, enhances Disney’s position as a truly global entertainment company with world-class offerings in key regions
  • Robert A. Iger to remain Chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company through 2021

The Walt Disney Company and Twenty-First Century Fox, Inc. (21st Century Fox) today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement for Disney to acquire 21st Century Fox, including the Twentieth Century Fox Film and Television studios, along with cable and international TV businesses, for approximately $52.4 billion in stock (subject to adjustment). Building on Disney’s commitment to deliver the highest quality branded entertainment, the acquisition of these complementary assets would allow Disney to create more appealing content, build more direct relationships with consumers around the world and deliver a more compelling entertainment experience to consumers wherever and however they choose. Immediately prior to the acquisition, 21st Century Fox will separate the Fox Broadcasting network and stations, Fox News Channel, Fox Business Network, FS1, FS2 and Big Ten Network into a newly listed company that will be spun off to its shareholders.

Under the terms of the agreement, shareholders of 21st Century Fox will receive 0.2745 Disney shares for each 21st Century Fox share they hold (subject to adjustment for certain tax liabilities as described below). The exchange ratio was set based on a 30-day volume weighted average price of Disney stock. Disney will also assume approximately $13.7 billion of net debt of 21st Century Fox. The acquisition price implies a total equity value of approximately $52.4 billion and a total transaction value of approximately $66.1 billion (in each case based on the stated exchange ratio assuming no adjustment) for the business to be acquired by Disney, which includes consolidated assets along with a number of equity investments.

Popular Entertainment Properties to Join Disney Family

Combining with Disney are 21st Century Fox’s critically acclaimed film production businesses, including Twentieth Century Fox, Fox Searchlight Pictures and Fox 2000, which together offer diverse and compelling storytelling businesses and are the homes of Avatar, X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool, as well as The Grand Budapest Hotel, Hidden Figures, Gone Girl, The Shape of Water and The Martian—and its storied television creative units, Twentieth Century Fox Television, FX Productions and Fox21, which have brought The Americans, This Is Us, Modern Family, The Simpsons and so many more hit TV series to viewers across the globe. Disney will also acquire FX Networks, National Geographic Partners, Fox Sports Regional Networks, Fox Networks Group International, Star India and Fox’s interests in Hulu, Sky plc, Tata Sky and Endemol Shine Group.

“The acquisition of this stellar collection of businesses from 21st Century Fox reflects the increasing consumer demand for a rich diversity of entertainment experiences that are more compelling, accessible and convenient than ever before,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company. “We’re honored and grateful that Rupert Murdoch has entrusted us with the future of businesses he spent a lifetime building, and we’re excited about this extraordinary opportunity to significantly increase our portfolio of well-loved franchises and branded content to greatly enhance our growing direct-to-consumer offerings. The deal will also substantially expand our international reach, allowing us to offer world-class storytelling and innovative distribution platforms to more consumers in key markets around the world.”

“We are extremely proud of all that we have built at 21st Century Fox, and I firmly believe that this combination with Disney will unlock even more value for shareholders as the new Disney continues to set the pace in what is an exciting and dynamic industry,” said Rupert Murdoch, Executive Chairman of 21st Century Fox. “Furthermore, I’m convinced that this combination, under Bob Iger’s leadership, will be one of the greatest companies in the world. I’m grateful and encouraged that Bob has agreed to stay on, and is committed to succeeding with a combined team that is second to none.”

At the request of both 21st Century Fox and the Disney Board of Directors, Mr. Iger has agreed to continue as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company through the end of calendar year 2021.

“When considering this strategic acquisition, it was important to the Board that Bob remain as Chairman and CEO through 2021 to provide the vision and proven leadership required to successfully complete and integrate such a massive, complex undertaking,” said Orin C. Smith, Lead Independent Director of the Disney Board. “We share the belief of our counterparts at 21st Century Fox that extending his tenure is in the best interests of our company and our shareholders, and will be critical to Disney’s ability to effectively drive long-term value from this extraordinary acquisition.”

Benefits to Consumers

The acquisition will enable Disney to accelerate its use of innovative technologies, including its BAMTECH platform, to create more ways for its storytellers to entertain and connect directly with audiences while providing more choices for how they consume content. The complementary offerings of each company enhance Disney’s development of films, television programming and related products to provide consumers with a more enjoyable and immersive entertainment experience.

Bringing on board 21st Century Fox’s entertainment content and capabilities, along with its broad international footprint and a world-class team of managers and storytellers, will allow Disney to further its efforts to provide a more compelling entertainment experience through its direct-to-consumer (DTC) offerings. This transaction will enable Disney’s recently announced Disney and ESPN-branded DTC offerings, as well as Hulu, to create more appealing and engaging experiences, delivering content, entertainment and sports to consumers around the world wherever and however they want to enjoy it.

The agreement also provides Disney with the opportunity to reunite the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool with the Marvel family under one roof and create richer, more complex worlds of inter-related characters and stories that audiences have shown they love. The addition of Avatar to its family of films also promises expanded opportunities for consumers to watch and experience storytelling within these extraordinary fantasy worlds. Already, guests at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort can experience the magic of Pandora—The World of Avatar, a new land inspired by the Fox film franchise that opened earlier this year. And through the incredible storytelling of National Geographic—whose mission is to explore and protect our planet and inspire new generations through education initiatives and resources—Disney will be able to offer more ways than ever before to bring kids and families the world and all that is in it.

Flight of Passage

Enhancing Disney’s Worldwide Offerings

Adding 21st Century Fox’s premier international properties enhances Disney’s position as a truly global entertainment company with authentic local production and consumer services across high-growth regions, including a richer array of local, national and global sporting events that ESPN can make available to fans around the world. The transaction boosts Disney’s international revenue mix and exposure.

Disney’s international reach would greatly expand through the addition of Sky, which serves nearly 23 million households in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria and Italy; Fox Networks International, with more than 350 channels in 170 countries; and Star India, which operates 69 channels reaching 720 million viewers a month across India and more than 100 other countries.

Prior to the close of the transaction, it is anticipated that 21st Century Fox will seek to complete its planned acquisition of the 61% of Sky it doesn’t already own. Sky is one of Europe’s most successful pay television and creative enterprises with innovative and high-quality direct-to-consumer platforms, resonant brands and a strong and respected leadership team. 21st Century Fox remains fully committed to completing the current Sky offer and anticipates that, subject to the necessary regulatory consents, the transaction will close by June 30, 2018. Assuming 21st Century Fox completes its acquisition of Sky prior to closing of the transaction, The Walt Disney Company would assume full ownership of Sky, including the assumption of its outstanding debt, upon closing.

Transaction Highlights

The acquisition is expected to yield at least $2 billion in cost savings from efficiencies realized through the combination of businesses, and to be accretive to earnings before the impact of purchase accounting for the second fiscal year after the close of the transaction.

Terms of the transaction call for Disney to issue approximately 515 million new shares to 21st Century Fox shareholders, representing approximately a 25% stake in Disney on a pro forma basis. The per share consideration is subject to adjustment for certain tax liabilities arising from the spinoff and other transactions related to the acquisition. The initial exchange ratio of 0.2745 Disney shares for each 21st Century Fox share was set based on an estimate of such tax liabilities to be covered by an $8.5 billion cash dividend to 21st Century Fox from the company to be spun off. The exchange ratio will be adjusted immediately prior to closing of the acquisition based on an updated estimate of such tax liabilities. Such adjustment could increase or decrease the exchange ratio, depending upon whether the final estimate is lower or higher, respectively, than the initial estimate. However, if the final estimate of the tax liabilities is lower than the initial estimate, the first $2 billion of that adjustment will instead be made by net reduction in the amount of the cash dividend to 21st Century Fox from the company to be spun off. The amount of such tax liabilities will depend upon several factors, including tax rates in effect at the time of closing as well as the value of the company to be spun off.

The Boards of Directors of Disney and 21st Century Fox have approved the transaction, which is subject to shareholder approval by 21st Century Fox and Disney shareholders, clearance under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act, a number of other non-United States merger and other regulatory reviews, and other customary closing conditions.

Important Information About the Transaction and Where to Find It
In connection with the proposed transaction between The Walt Disney Company (“Disney”) and Twenty-First Century Fox, Inc. Everything You Need to Know Before You See Star Wars: The Last Jedi

By Jim Frye

As the world prepares to climb back into the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon and hyperdrive across the galaxy in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which opens this Friday, December 15, D23 catches you up on everything you need to know before you see the film.

The Journey So Far
A long time ago (in 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope, to be exact) in a galaxy far, far away, a ragtag team of rebels, led by Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo, overthrew the evil galactic Empire and restored peace to the galaxy. Thirty years later (in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Supreme Leader Snoke and his oppressive First Order rise up from the ashes of the Empire and use their Starkiller Base to destroy much of the New Republic. Standing against this new menace is the Resistance, led by General Leia Organa, aided by our new heroes—Rey, Finn, and Poe—along with a familiar face: Han Solo. Together, they face off against the dark warrior Kylo Ren on their quest to find Luke Skywalker, the last of the Jedi—their only hope.

New Heroes

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Rey
Rey, the central character of The Force Awakens, is a scavenger, a survivor toughened by life on the harsh desert planet of Jakku. When the droid BB-8 shows up and needs help, Rey finds herself drawn into a galaxy-spanning conflict and learns that her life is being shaped by the mysterious power of the Force. She soon faces off against the dreaded Kylo Ren before flying off in the Millennium Falcon to find the elusive and legendary Luke Skywalker.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Poe
Poe Dameron is a commander in the Resistance’s Starfighter Corps and one of Leia Organa’s most-trusted operatives. While on a mission to deliver important intel to the Resistance, he is captured by Kylo Ren, but later escapes and leads the attack on the First Order’s Starkiller Base.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Finn
The stormtrooper FN-2187 was trained to serve the First Order, but his conscience drove him to help Resistance pilot Poe Dameron escape, after which Poe gave him the nickname “Finn.” He teamed up with Rey, the droid BB-8, and Han Solo on their quest to help the Resistance by finding Luke Skywalker.

Old Friends

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Leia
Ranked among the galaxy’s greatest heroes because of her leadership in ending the tyranny of the Empire, Leia Organa has grown from princess to general of the Resistance, leading the fight against the First Order. Having suffered incredible personal loss, she is still determined to find her brother, Luke Skywalker, in the hope that he can help to finally bring peace to the galaxy.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Luke
Tatooine farmboy Luke Skywalker rose from humble beginnings to become one of the greatest Jedi the galaxy has ever known. Along with his friends Han and Leia, he helped end the Empire and the terror of the Sith. A generation later, he is being called upon to again defend the galaxy from a new evil.

New Threats

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Kylo Ren
A dark warrior strong with the Force, Kylo Ren reveres the history of Darth Vader and resists the influence of his parents, Han and Leia. As a leader of the First Order and a student of Supreme Leader Snoke, Kylo seeks to destroy the New Republic, the Resistance, and the legacy of the Jedi.

Supreme Leader Snoke
The mysterious dark figure Supreme Leader Snoke looms large and menacing, commanding the forces of the First Order, while also training Kylo Ren in the ways of the Force.

Inside the Walt Disney Archives’ Holiday Exhibit

By Rick Lorentz, Archivist, Walt Disney Archives

On December 8, 2017, the Walt Disney Archives presented Holiday Memories from The Walt Disney Archives—their first winter holiday exhibit on The Walt Disney Studios lot in more than 10 years. Cast members had the opportunity to view 150-plus holiday-themed historical objects from the Archives collection that were displayed inside the historic Hyperion Bungalow. Two days later, on December 10, D23 members were treated to festive food and craft offerings around the lot, holiday entertainment (including a screening of Have Yourself a Goofy Little Christmas), and the chance to visit the exhibit.

Through a careful selection of holiday objects, the Archives shared memories that included original art, props and costumes from The Walt Disney Studios, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, and well-known Disney films.

Holiday cards

Beginning in the late 1930’s, artists at The Walt Disney Studios created one-of-a-kind artwork for the annual studio holiday card that would be sent to employees, business partners, and friends of Walt Disney. Several pieces of original art were restored and framed for presentation in the Holiday Memories exhibit. The art often reflected the latest film release from the Studio, or looked forward to banner releases for the coming year. Included in the exhibit were works representing Bambi (1942) and Mary Poppins (1964). Mickey Mouse even had the honor of representing 1948! The holiday art from that year depicts Mickey in his pajamas and nightcap carrying a lighted candle. The glow of the candle projects a bright snowflake image and is accompanied by the holiday sentiment, “Seasons Greetings.” Each year, the interior of the card contained more original art plus a monthly calendar for the upcoming year.

Fred MacMurray

The month of December was always a special time for Walt Disney. Along with the holidays, there were several Disney family member birthdays to celebrate during the last month of the year.  Walt’s staff kept meticulous records of the many gifts that Walt and Lillian would send, not only to immediate family but also to an extended family of performers, directors, and studio cast members. The Walt Disney Archives was pleased to present a couple of the card and gift lists that were once kept in Walt’s private business office. In the exhibit, an index card labeled “Fred MacMurray” lists the gifts that were sent to Katherine and Laurie, Fred’s daughters, over the course of several years.

Walt Disney World

It is during the holiday seasons when Walt Disney Parks and Resorts really sparkle, and helping to make special holiday memories are the festive parades and classic seasonal merchandise. The reindeer character costume from Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World stands at a towering height of 8-feet, 6-inches. Parade dancers also marched while carefully maneuvering a 5-foot-wide snowflake as part of their holiday costume.

Country Bear Christmas

Country Bear Christmas Special was a seasonal treat at Disneyland Park from 1984–2000. In the show, Liver Lips McGrowl played a custom electric guitar designed to resemble a Christmas tree and a penguin, shivering inside a ice cube, was enlisted to assist Terrance in his frosty rendition of “Blue Christmas.” Imagine the excitement of Archives staff when it was discovered that the attraction’s penguins were still in working order and ready for the show to go on!

Christmas Carol

Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol has been interpreted by Disney in three major films—Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983), The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992), and Disney’s A Christmas Carol (2009). We selected a variety of development art, models, and miniatures from the Archives collection that were used in the production of the three films.

A special holiday treat was the chance to see the hat, scarf and shoes worn by the Great Gonzo in The Muppet Christmas Carol.  Thank you to our friends at The Muppet Studios for loaning the priceless costume pieces!

Babes in Toyland

Another favorite holiday film, Babes in Toyland (1961), featured beautifully detailed costumes designed by Bill Thomas. The red cape with white fur trim was worn by Annette Funicello as Mary Contrary while a white suit with red silk underlining was worn by Tommy Sands as Tom Piper.

The Santa Clause

Tim Allen portrayed Santa Claus in three movies, The Santa Clause (1994), The Santa Clause 2 (2002), and The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause (2006). On display in the exhibit was a large variety of props used in the film, as well as several costumes, including one of the smallest costumes in the Archives collection, Judy the Elf.

At the close of the exhibit, more than 2,000 Disney cast members and D23 members had visited the Hyperion Bungalow—and hopefully created a few holiday memories of their own to cherish for years to come!

Disney On Broadway Brings Star Power to Epcot Festival of the Arts

Epcot at Walt Disney World Resort is already an incredible place to visit (don’t get us started on the amazing fish and chips at the Rose & Crown Pub in the United Kingdom pavilion)—but they somehow go about making it even cooler by offering several fabulous festivals throughout the year. Example: the Epcot International Festival of the Arts, running from January 12 to February 18! After last year’s inaugural—not to mention successful—outing, the Fest returns to celebrate all things art… performing, visual, and even culinary.

And this just in: As part of their “12 Days of Disney Parks Christmas,” our pals at the Disney Parks Blog recently made a big Fest-related announcement… Disney On Broadway performances will once again thrill visitors each weekend (Friday through Monday) during the 2018 event!

Broadway stars Ashley Brown (Mary Poppins), Josh Strickland (Tarzan), Kissy Simmons (The Lion King), Kevin Massey (Tarzan), and Alton Fitzgerald White (The Lion King) are all returning—and they’ll be joined for the first time this year by Kara Lindsay, known for her role as Katherine Plumber in Newsies. To find out more about the Disney On Broadway performance schedule during the Festival of the Arts, or about the Fest itself, visit disneyworld.com/ArtfulEpcot.

The Lion King Releases First Dual-Language Music Video

Speaking of Disney On Broadway, Disney’s The Lion King has been stunning audiences on the Great White Way for 20 years… and now, the show has released its very first dual-language music video, for the show’s epic ballad, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”… or, in Spanish, “Puedes Sentir El Amor.” Delight your senses by taking a gander at the charming clip, above.

Performed in Spanish and English, the video features Agustín Argüello, who plays Simba in the Mexico City production (now playing at the Telcel Theater), and Adrienne Walker, who currently stars as Nala on Broadway. It’s all in celebration of the show’s 20th anniversary on Broadway at the Minskoff Theatre—as well as the show’s whopping 24 productions around the globe. Find out more about The Lion King’s incredible history on the musical theater stage right here.

A Wrinkle in Time is an epic adventure based the timeless classic, in which audiences will travel across dimensions of time and space, examining the nature of darkness versus light and, ultimately, the triumph of love. Through one girl’s journey—led by three mysterious celestial guides—moviegoers will discover that strength comes from embracing one’s individuality… and that the best way to triumph over fear is to travel by one’s own light. Also starring Chris Pine, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Zach Galifianakis, the film debuts March 9.
