Smash and Grab Are the Cutest Robots Since WALL•E and Eve

By Zach Johnson

Smash and Grab is, as its title suggests, a total smash.

Pixar Animation Studios’ SparkShorts series continues today with a new entry from director Brian Larsen and producer David Lally. The short, part of an experimental storytelling initiative within the studio, tells the story of two robots who dream of leaving their demanding day jobs behind. Everything changes when Smash (the robot with the hammer arm) sees an opportunity to escape the engine room and lead Grab (the robot with the hands) to freedom. As Lally asks in a behind-the-scenes video, “When those two robots want to do something other than what they’re designed to do, how far are they willing to go to do that—especially for each other?”

To take their concept from script to screen, Larsen and Lally restructured their workflow and began experimenting with motion capture animation much earlier in the process. “We had animators actually in the suits so they could physicalize the characters,” Larsen explains, with Lally noting that team members readily embraced “the scrappy nature” of making an animated short film. “It was just so inspiring for me,” adds Larsen. “All of these people really collaborating and creating a new pipeline—a new way of working. I loved just making that story come to life.”

The YouTube premiere of Smash and Grab arrives a week after the debut of Purl, directed by Kristen Lester and produced by Gillian Libbert-Duncan. Both of these Pixar Animation Studios SparkShorts shorts recently made their big-screen debut at Hollywood’s El Capitan Theatre, with Kitbull, from director Rosana Sullivan and producer Kathryn Hendrickson, hitting YouTube February 18.

Other SparkShorts (Float, Loop, and Wind) will be available on Disney+, The Walt Disney Company’s upcoming direct-to-consumer streaming service, set to launch in the U.S. later this year.

Remembering Ron Miller

Ron W. Miller, Walt Disney’s son-in-law and the husband of Diane Disney, passed away February 9, 2019, in Napa, California. He was 85.

Miller was 21 and a member of the USC Trojans football team when he was introduced to then-20-year-old Diane Disney on a blind date. They were married in Santa Barbara on May 9, 1954. Ron served in the Army and played football for the Los Angeles Rams before his father-in-law recruited him to work at The Walt Disney Studios in 1957. Miller’s first job was serving as second assistant on Old Yeller (1957). Eventually, as CEO, Miller pushed the Company to expand and explore, creating Walt Disney Home Video, Touchstone Pictures, and The Disney Channel.

“Everyone at The Walt Disney Company is deeply saddened by the passing of Ron Miller,” said Bob Iger, chairman and chief executive officer, The Walt Disney Company. “His life and legacy are inextricably linked with our Company and the Disney family because he was such a vital part of both, as our CEO and Walt’s son-in-law. Few people had Ron’s understanding of our history, or a deeper appreciation and respect for our Company, and he shared it generously with anyone who wanted to know more. I was fortunate to have known him, and even luckier to have called him a friend. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

During Miller’s time at Disney, he pushed technological innovation, including computer animation, championing such innovative films as Tron (1982).

Miller, Diane, and Diane’s mother, Lillian, established Silverado Vineyards in 1981, four years after they purchased the property. This place, near the small town of Yountville, California, became Ron and Diane’s permanent residence.

He served on the Board of Directors at The Walt Disney Family Museum since its opening in 2009 and became president in November 2013.

In 2014, D23 joined Miller for a dedication of a bench in honor of his late wife, Diane Disney Miller, at the Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round. In attendance at the ceremony were his family, along with Disney Legends Tony Baxter and Bob Gurr.

Miller is survived by his children Christopher Miller, Joanna Miller, Tamara Diane Miller, Jennifer Goff, Walter Elias Disney Miller, Ronald Miller, and Patrick Miller; grandchildren Annabelle Rey, Nicholas Runeare, Ryan Scheer, Danielle Durham, Sam Goff, Lily Goff, Charlotte Goff, Sebastian Runeare, Haley Scheer, Reilly Miller, Madeline Goff, William Miller, and Elias Miller; and great-grandchildren Stella Durham, Finley Scheer, and Evelyn and Mason Goff.

Donations may be made to the memorial fund that The Walt Disney Family Museum has established in honor of Ron and Diane Disney Miller. Donations will support the museum’s ongoing education efforts. Donations and cards can also be sent to the family through The Walt Disney Family Museum, ATTN: Director’s Office; 104 Montgomery Street, San Francisco, CA 94129.

Services will be private, and the museum has not yet planned a public commemoration.

“Bless my soul, Herc is on a roll!” Now this is some über-nifty musical theater-related news, especially for fans of the Disney animated classic Hercules. (Hey, that’s us!) Just this week, The Public Theater announced that a new stage musical adaptation of the 1997 film will be presented this summer at their Delacorte Theater inside New York City’s Central Park, as part of Public Works’ Shakespeare in the Park theater series. And best of all, it’ll be free!

The show, presented by special arrangement with Disney Theatrical Productions (under the direction of Thomas Schumacher), will feature beloved songs from the film as well as brand-new musical numbers—all written by Disney Legend Alan Menken and David Zippel. It’ll also include a new book (that means “script”) by Kristoffer Diaz, and original choreography by Chase Brock. Directed by Public Works Founder Lear deBessonet, the Hercules musical will run August 31 through September 8.

Fozzie Bear Lends Voice to Big City Greens—This Weekend!

Muppet fans, listen up! There’s a show you’ve just gotta watch—on Disney Channel and/or DisneyNOW—this weekend… Fozzie Bear, The Muppets’ (and the world’s only!) “stand-up comic bear,” will make his voice acting debut as Dr. Enamel, a cheery and affable dentist who eagerly imparts dental wisdom to his patients, in a brand-new episode of Big City Greens this Saturday, February 9, at 8:30 a.m. EST/PST. Hear from the legendary bear himself in the clip, above.

In the episode titled “Hurty Tooth,” the Greens go on a family visit to the dentist’s office where Cricket is determined to avoid Dr. Enamel and power through his toothache. Comedian and actor Paul F. Tompkins also guest stars as the Tooth Fairy.

For those unfamiliar, Big City Greens is an animated comedy-adventure series—created and executive produced by brothers Chris and Shane Houghton (Harvey Beaks)—which follows the offbeat adventures of 10-year-old Cricket Green, a mischievous and optimistic country boy who moves to the big city with his wildly out of place family: older sister Tilly, father Bill, and Gramma Alice. You can catch the show daily on Disney Channel… and good news: The show was recently picked up for a second season!

Hercules Stage Musical Coming to New York City This Summer

By Zach Johnson

This summer, Hercules will once again go the distance—but this time, our hero will go from Mount Olympus to New York City! Today, The Public Theater announced it is bringing Hercules to the stage, continuing its 57-year tradition of offering free performances in Central Park. Part of Shakespeare in the Park, Public Works’ new adaptation will close out the 2019 season.

The stage show, presented by special arrangement with Disney Theatrical Productions, under the direction of Thomas Schumacher, will feature songs from the beloved animated classic, as well as new musical numbers by Disney Legend Alan Menken and David Zippel; it will also include a new book by Kristoffer Diaz and original choreography by Chase Brock. Directed by Public Works Founder Lear deBessonet, the Hercules musical will run August 31 through September 8.

“We are thrilled to welcome Lear deBessonet back at the helm of our Public Works initiative for the first time since 2015,” said Oskar Eustis, artistic director, The Public Theater. “Alan Menken is one of the great musical geniuses of our time; it is an honor to welcome him, David Zippel, and Kristoffer Diaz to the Delacorte. Our Public Works community promises to connect this brilliantly conceived story back to the earth from which it sprang: the people. What a grand and unlikely experience this will be!”

“Many generations of our Public Works families have embraced Disney musicals as a shared American canon,” said deBessonet. “Hercules’ roots in Greek mythology, infused with soulful gospel music, make it a natural extension of Public Works’ radical exploration of humanity through Shakespeare and the classics. We’re excited to see how this Public Works production will uncover the deeper meaning of what it means to be a hero and how true strength is derived, not from the greatness of one person, but the transformative power of community.”

Based on Disney’s Oscar®-nominated 1997 film, directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, the stage production has also recruited scenic designer Dane Laffrey; costume designer Andrea Hood; lighting designer Tyler Micoleau; sound designers Kai Harada and Jessica Paz; wigs, hair, and makeup designer Cookie Jordan; and music arranger and supervisor Michael Kosarin.

You Have to Meet Purl, the Star of Pixar’s Newest Short

By Beth Deitchman

Pixar Animation Studios has woven together an exciting new film program, SparkShorts, an experimental storytelling initiative that welcomes new creative voices at the studio to share their stories. The program’s first three shorts recently made their big-screen debut at Hollywood’s El Capitan Theatre, and Purl launched on YouTube today.

Purl follows the title character, an earnest ball of yarn, as she embarks on her first day at B.R.O. Capital and endeavors to become one of the guys. How far will Purl go to fit in? Find out below in the short from director Kristen Lester and producer Gillian Libbert-Duncan.

“The SparkShorts program is designed to discover new storytellers, explore new storytelling techniques, and experiment with new production workflows,” said Jim Morris, president of Pixar Animation Studios. “These films are unlike anything we’ve ever done at Pixar, providing an opportunity to unlock the potential of individual artists and their inventive filmmaking approaches on a smaller scale than our normal fare.”

Sparkshorts

“We want to nurture our future storytellers and encourage them to share their stories with the world. Who are the future directors and producers and what crazy new ideas do they have brewing? What is the next big breakthrough in our industry?” added Lindsey Collins, vice president of development for Pixar.

“Diversity and inclusion are at the heart of SparkShorts,” she continued. “The program was created to provide opportunities to a wide array of artists—each with something unique to say.”

The two additional SparkShorts films are coming to the Disney•Pixar YouTube channel in the coming weeks:

Sparkshorts

  • Smash and Grab, directed by Brian Larsen and produced by David Lally, tells the story of a pair antiquated robots who risk everything for freedom and for each other after spending years toiling away inside the engine room of a towering locomotive. The short will be available on YouTube on February 11.

Sparkshorts

  • Kitbull, from director Rosana Sullivan and producer Kathryn Hendrickson, spotlights the unlikely friendship between a fiercely independent stray kitten and a pit bull. Look for Kitbull on YouTube on February 18.

The trio of SparkShorts (along with future films) will also be available on Disney+, The Walt Disney Company’s upcoming direct-to-consumer streaming service, which is set to launch in the U.S. later this year.

Every New Disney Trailer from The Game

By Jocelyn Buhlman

Today is traditionally a day when football fans gather together to watch the game and root for their favorite team, but they aren’t the only fans with their eyes glued to their TVs today. Disney fans had several big reasons to tune in today, as several highly anticipate trailers for upcoming Disney films made their debut during today’s broadcast. Didn’t have a chance to catch them all? We’ve rounded them up right here, so you can catch every moment of excitement and Disney magic.

Captain Marvel
We’re almost a month away from Carol Danvers’ big debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and this new trailer is only making our anticipation higher, further, faster.

Avengers: Endgame
It’s the movie 10 years in the making, and April 26 cannot come soon enough! While this new sneak peek doesn’t give us any answers on what happened to our faves since that fateful snap, it does make us even more excited (is that even possible?) to see everyone take on Thanos in Avengers: Endgame.

Toy Story 4
It’s been a big week for fans anticipating Toy Story 4: Bo Peep’s new, action-ready design debuted earlier this week, along with the Twitter account for the hilarious newcomers, Ducky and Bunny. If that wasn’t enough, our excitement has gone to infinity and beyond thanks to this new trailer that debuted after the game!
