5 Pieces of Important Intel from the Andor Cast and Crew

By Jocelyn Buhlman

The fate of the galaxy hangs in the balance. The once-mighty force of the Jedi has fallen and a mysterious, powerful Emperor holds the planets in the palms of his gnarled hands. It’s a grim time for the average person trying to navigate life in the Star Wars galaxy, where Episode III ended and when the Andor series is set—with the “bad guys” winning…

When you start watching Andor on September 21 on Disney+, you’d expect the tone to be hopeless—but then, you’ve forgotten what keeps the heart of Star Wars beating. “There’s nothing cynical about this show,” showrunner Tony Gilroy maintains during the show’s recent virtual press conference. The sentiment was shared with the present cast, including Diego Luna, who plays the titular character; Genevieve O’Reilly, who plays Mon Mothma; Adria Arjona, who portrays Bix Caleen; Denise Gough, who plays Dedra Meero; and Kyle Soler, who plays Syril Karn. While details around this show have been kept as top-secret as the Death Star plans or the location of the secret Rebel Base, Gilroy and the cast passed along some key pieces of intel about the series, which sets the stage of a rebellion strong enough to end a Sith-ruled Empire.

Diego Luna as Cassian Andor walks through a street, a brick building behind him. On the left of the image, a person driving some kind of yellow and red transportation vehicle

Andor is the story of how a revolutionary is created

Something both Gilroy and Luna agree on is that while Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was about a key moment in the Rebel Alliance’s history, Andor is a map—laying out the steps of how someone can transform from an average person to a rebel, willing to risk it all in the name of hope. To Gilroy, the “walk-in” for the series was that exact idea: “We can do a story that takes [Cassian Andor] literally from his childhood origins and walk him through a five-year history of an odyssey that takes him to that place, during a revolution, during a moment in history in a place where huge events are happening, and real people are being crushed by it. The fact that we could follow somebody as an example of a revolution all the way through to the end [made it work].”

While this story is set in a galaxy far, far away, the journey of Cassian is one with roots very much here on Earth. “It’s quite relevant today,” Luna says, “to tell the story of what needs to happen for a revolutionary to emerge, to exist, to come to life.” The original Star Wars trilogy shows us a Rebellion at the height of the battle, fully organized and prepared to take down the Empire. Those who watched Star Wars with wide eyes, filled with the hope that they too could make a difference in the world might still be wondering: What’s the first step? It’s not often that an astromech droid rolls into your life with a message from a princess—most journeys to making a difference start a little differently. “That journey matters to me,” Luna says, “You know that [Cassian] started to fight when he was six years old. What does that mean, exactly? Why would a six-year-old miss his childhood and start to fight? I think that story matters.”

He continues, “If that’s possible, then anyone can do something. I always thought of Cassian as a character that has been forced to move; therefore, he brings a pain that he’s carrying, that is making him very cynical about life. [But he’s] finding a way to get the clarity of someone that suddenly starts believing, and that goes through a process of acknowledging that something in a community can give you enough strength to be useful and to bring change.”

Genevieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma, in a white robe, walks with a purpose down a white, octagonal archway. A tree with white flowers hangs from the ceiling and in the distance, a window looks out upon a city.

You’re going to meet the real Mon Mothma

While much of the series is about Cassian’s journey to the Rebel Alliance, it also spends a lot of time exploring different characters who are moving other parts in this story—including a familiar face for many. O’Reilly reprises her role as Mon Mothma, which she previously played in both Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and Rogue One. “Each time we’ve met her, we’ve met this kind of composed, regal, dignified woman,” O’Reilly says, “who often—like with Cassian in Rogue One—sends people out on a mission.” It’s true—this Rebel Alliance leader’s most famous scenes in Rogue One and in Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi (as portrayed by Caroline Blakiston) are both centered around sending the main characters on assignments.

So, what does Mon Mothma do when she’s not telling us about complex plans and the Bothans who died to get them? “For the first time, we get to see the woman behind the role,” O’Reilly tells us, “We get to see a private face of Mon Mothma. We get to flesh out not just the senator, not just the would-be leader of a Rebel Alliance, but also the woman.” The series starts with Mon Mothma “steeped in Empire,” as O’Reilly puts it, “navigating a very male-dominated Empire with a very powerful Emperor Palpatine at the top of it. And so, we find her in a place we’ve never seen her before. We find her in a bit of a gilded cage. What I’m excited for is for us to travel that story with her.”

Denise Gough as Dedra Meero walks through a street in a black, Imperial cap and a white coat, flanked by two Death troopers.

There will be…Girl Power?

Both O’Reilly’s Mon Mothma and Arjona’s Bix Caleen are heroines of the series, but Gough’s character, Dedra, is a powerful woman with a different alignment. “Dedra is an ISP officer. And when we meet her, she’s at the kind of low end of the ladder,” Gough says. “She’s incredibly ambitious and meticulous. What I love about playing her is that, she’s in this very male-dominated world and she’s seeing, around her, the way that people are missing what she can see is happening.”

Much like Mon Mothma, she’s steeped in the male-dominated empire. The difference is that she wants to be there: “She’s clawing her way up the ladder. And I love portraying the effect that power just has on a person, like the danger of that pursuit of power and control, regardless of gender.” Gough amends—”I mean, I do kind of love that you’re thinking, ‘Oh, go girl.’ And then you remember, she’s in a fascist organization.” She laughs, adding, “I’m getting a real thrill being able to play her. She wants to really make her mark in this industry of the Empire.”

A person leaning against a walking stick looks out upon a massive ravine, where some kind of machine is working near step-shaped gray rocks.

They created a fully immersive world

If you’re going to tell a story about intergalactic espionage and revolutions, it helps to have an out-of-this-world set to explore. “I remember coming to one of the sets, the town that had been built by the production designers, and the set units and every little thing had been thought of. Every cabinet had, I don’t know, a whole life inside,” recalls Soler.

Airona agrees: “I remember the first day, walking around and kind of getting lost in it and exploring. And it was so cool.” A specific memory stands out to her that really illustrates the sheer size of the whole thing; as she explains, “There was one day where one of our directors told me to run, and I was like, ‘Well, where do you want me to run?’

He’s like, ‘Anywhere you want!’ ‘Cause everything was filmable. If I would go left, we could’ve filmed there; if I would go right, we could’ve filmed there. He could basically point the camera either left or right, and that was kind of cool.”

Diego Luna as Cassian Andor stands in a line of Imperial soldiers, all looking to the left with a serious expression.

Andor explores the “gray areas” of Star Wars

Throughout Star Wars’ stories, audiences are left to contemplate good and evil; the light and the dark. Even in films like Rogue One, where there are no Jedi or Force users among the protagonists, there is still a steadfast belief in the light side of the Force. But what about that in-between area, that’s not quite light and not quite dark? “[Cassian] spends much of his time in the complexity of the gray areas,” Luna explains, “In the contradictions of characters. And that’s where I think this real thing comes out of it. Because it’s full of that experience, of just being someone trying to live your life and having to make choices. This is a show about people, about real people, you know? It’s very dark times in the galaxy; there are no Jedi around. These people are having to articulate a reaction to oppression, and it’s the most grounded kind of Star Wars you’ll get.”

In many ways, it’s a story about us here on Earth. We don’t have Jedi or Sith or any kind of Force to propel us, so how do we rebel? As Luna says, “It is a show about us—it is a show about these people finding the strength to come up with a reaction and to change and bring change to their reality.” It’s a story he hopes everyone will want to see: “I thought that story matters too much. It’s [something] I would like to tell my kids, and to my friends.”

5 Fantastic Things to Watch This Week

By Andie Hagemann

From a royal engagement to a battle royal, you won’t want to miss all the spectacular content coming to your TV (and assorted streaming devices) this week! On Tuesday, join in celebrating the milestone 25th anniversary of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella with Cinderella: The Reunion, A Special Edition of 20/20, followed by a presentation of the beloved musical on ABC. That same day, the series finale of Freeform’s Motherland: Fort Salem will have you on the edge of your seat! The campers are stirring up drama on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, with a new episode launching Wednesday on Disney+. And the new beginnings are in store on Thursday’s episode of Good Trouble on Freeform. Close out the week with a new episode of Eureka!, airing Friday, with a special guest stopping by Rocky Falls.

Actors and musical artists Brandy and Whitney Houston embrace while portraying Cinderella and Fairy Godmother, respectively. Brandy wears a light blue ball gown off her shoulders, matching gloves, and a silver tiara. Houston wears a gold dress with a high neckline and ornate beading.

Cinderella: The Reunion, A Special Edition of 20/20—Tuesday, August 23, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC
Celebrate the 25th anniversary of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella with a double dose of magic. First, watch the ABC News special featuring members of the all-star cast—including Brandy, Disney Legend Whoopi Goldberg, Paolo Montalban, Victor Garber, Bernadette Peters, Jason Alexander, and Veanne Cox—as well as exclusive behind-the-scenes footage. Learn how the made-for-television musical started a revolution. After the special, The Wonderful World of Disney will present the original film at 9 p.m. ET/PT for the first time in more than two decades. Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella is available to stream on Disney+.

Actor Kandyse Mcclure looks to the left and wears a dark gray turtleneck top with a black blazer. Her surroundings are out of focus but behind her is a large window signaling daylight.

Motherland: Fort Salem—Tuesday, August 23, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Freeform
It all ends here. The series finale is upon us, and the Unit is gearing up for a climactic battle against the Camarilla with the help of a few allies. Meanwhile, Alder (Lyne Renée) races across the world to find the final piece of the First Song. Who will prevail?

Actor Sofia Wylie reads a letter and stands next to a desk. On the desk are piles of papers, including scripts and a container holding pens, pencils, and highlighters. Behind her is a large multi-pane window. She wears a light green cropped, long-sleeved T-shirt and white pants.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series—Wednesday, August 24, on Disney+
Episode 5 picks up in the aftermath of Gina (Sofia Wylie) finding the letter E.J. (Matt Cornett) received from his father. Meanwhile, the campers heed the advice of Corbin Bleu and his documentary crew to stir up some drama at Camp Shallow Lake. Carlos (Frankie A. Rodriguez) instructs the gang on top reality TV star tactics, including crying on camera, running out of a room abruptly, and getting caught saying something scandalous near a hot mic. Will it be enough to keep Corbin’s helicopter grounded?

Actor Kara Wang smiles and sits on a brown, leather couch. She wears a white, long-sleeved sweatshirt emblazoned with blue and yellow butterflies, peace signs, and fruit, along with pants that feature yellow flowers and a bright pink stripe down the side of her leg. To her left is a small journal on the couch’s armrest.

Good Trouble—Thursday, August 25, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Freeform
Speaking of drama, this all-new episode—intended only for mature audiences—has no shortage of it! As the FCGs become the latest victims of cancel culture, Davia (Emma Hunton) goes on a date with someone new. Meanwhile, Joaquin (Bryan Craig) learns more about his sister’s captor, and Sumi (Kara Wang) encourages Alice (Sherry Cola) to release her inhibitions.

An animated adult woman stand with both arms raised above her head. She wears a green shirt and leggings with a pink ballerina skirt and matching leg warmers. A group of children wearing brightly colored outfits stand facing her with some mimicking her arm position. Behind them is a bright blue sky with puffy white clouds and colorful jungle foliage.

Eureka!—Friday, August 26, at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on Disney Junior
American ballet dancer Misty Copeland stops by Rocky Falls in this week’s groovin’ new episode, voicing Rockanne, the dance teacher. The kids learn a new dance for school that comes easy to everyone except for Pepper (voiced by Kai Zen). Actress Ryan Michelle Bathé also guest stars in the episode as Sierra. The second story follows Barry (voiced by Devin Trey Campbell), who decides to be just like his dad—the town’s “fix-it man.”

The Disney+ Day poster for Thor: Love and Thunder. In the center are Thor, The Mighty Thor, King Valkyrie, Zeus, and Korg, who are looking in different directions. Behind them is a blue lightning bolt, with Gorr the God Butcher’s yellow eyes aglow inside it.

Thor: Love and Thunder
Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder finds the God of Thunder (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced—one of self-discovery. But his efforts are interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi), and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who—to Thor’s surprise—inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Thor: Love and Thunder joins 15 other Marvel Cinematic Universe movies now streaming in IMAX Enhanced on Disney+, which provides up to 26 percent more picture for an immersive at-home viewing experience. (No additional cost or device required. Content availability varies by region.)

Obi-Wan Kenobi: A Jedi’s Return
With never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage, colorful personal stories, and meaningful moments, Obi-Wan Kenobi: A Jedi’s Return showcases the making of Lucasfilm’s Original limited series Obi-Wan Kenobi, an epic story that begins 10 years after the dramatic events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. This insightful documentary from Lucasfilm and Supper Club explores the return of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker to the screen—and Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen to their respective classic roles. Director Deborah Chow, cast, and crew reflect on their journey to tell a new story with iconic Star Wars characters Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader, and Princess Leia, while introducing new heroes and villains into the saga. Complete with visits to the creature shop, props department, and more, Obi-Wan Kenobi: A Jedi’s Returnshowcases the side of filmmaking that makes Star Wars titles so unique: respect and passion for the generation-spanning legacy and the beloved characters.

Prince Hans stands in a boat, facing Princess Anna in Frozen. He is wearing formal attire, and she is wearing a green gown. Behind them is the kingdom of Arendelle.

Frozen and Frozen 2 Sing-Alongs
Enjoy Sing-Along versions of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Frozen and Frozen 2, which invite subscribers to fully immerse themselves in the music with onscreen lyrics.

Brie Larson is seated at a desk and writing. Beside her is a teapot and a teacup, and a light. Brie’s hair is tucked behind her ears and she is wearing overalls.

Remembering
Where do ideas come from—and where do they go when they’re forgotten? These central questions are brought to life in Remembering, an original short film by Emmy®-winning director Elijah Allan-Blitz. The story follows a writer (Brie Larson), who loses a very important idea when her phone rings. Personified as golden light, this lost idea is found by the writer’s inner child, who takes us on a journey through The World of Imagination. It is easy to lose touch with this world, but each of us can be inspired by it—if we just remember. With a first-of-its-kind companion Augmented Reality app, where the AR experience is triggered by the film’s moving image, select Disney+ subscribers in the U.S. can interact with the story by scanning the TV to extend The World of Imagination into their living room.

Welcome to the Club (a new short from The Simpsons)
With her heart set on becoming a princess, Lisa Simpson (voiced by Yeardley Smith) is surprised to learn being bad might be more fun.

Dancing with the Stars: The Pros’ Most Memorable Dances
Dancing with the Stars: The Pros’ Most Memorable Dances is a look back on the 20 most memorable dances of 30 seasons of Dancing with the Stars, chosen by the Pro Dancers. Hosted by Derek Hough, Kym Johnson, Cheryl Burke, and Brandon Armstrong, we’ll see them count down to their most unforgettable performance—highlighting everything from the best Mirrorball-winning performances over the years, to iconic opening numbers, Emmy-winning dances, and unforgettable celebrity mishaps. It all leads up to season 31 premiering live on September 19, only on Disney+.

Tierra Incógnita (Original Series Produced in Latin America)
Tierra Incógnita follows Eric Dalaras (Pedro Maurizi), a teenager who discovers a hair-raising world while searching for the truth behind the mysterious disappearance of his parents eight years before. Raised alongside his sister Uma (Mora Fisz) by his maternal grandparents, Eric decides to run away from home and go back to his childhood town, Cabo Qwert, to find answers where his parents were last seen: the Tierra Incógnita horror theme park. With his friends, his sister, and his aunt, Eric must overcome his fears in order to find answers and solve the mystery in a dark and unfamiliar world.

Previously announced Disney+ Day titles include:

Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as Jiminy Cricket, who serves as Pinocchio’s guide as well as his conscience; Cynthia Erivo stars as the Blue Fairy; Keegan-Michael Key stars as Honest John; Lorraine Bracco stars as Sofia the Seagull; and Luke Evans stars as The Coachman.

The series follows Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany), an attorney specializing in superhuman-oriented legal cases, who must navigate the complicated life of a single, 30-something who also happens to be a green, 6-foot-7-inch superpowered hulk. The series stars Mark Ruffalo, Tim Roth, Benedict Wong, Ginger Gonzaga, Josh Segarra, Jameela Jamil, Jon Bass, and Renée Elise Goldsberry.

The Cars on the Road poster features Lightning McQueen, Mater, and other fan-favorite characters.

Cars on the Road
The animated series follows Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) and his best friend Mater (voiced by Larry the Cable Guy) as they head east from Radiator Springs on a cross-country road trip to meet up with Mater’s sister. Along the way, every stop is its own adventure, with outrageous roadside attractions and colorful new characters.

The Growing Up poster features a man, in silhouette, illuminated in purple.

Growing Up
Created by Larson and Culture.House, this innovative, hybrid docu-series explores the challenges, triumphs, and complexities of adolescence through 10 compelling coming of age stories. From Disney Branded Television, Growing Up uses narrative, experimental, and documentary filmmaking as one casted individual, ages 18-22, tells their story. They represent a wide range of lived experiences, giving audiences emotionally powerful narratives that offer an engaging look at teenage-hood and the diverse social, familial, and internal obstacles young people face on their path to self-discovery and acceptance. Each 30-minute episode is centered on a single young person and is anchored by a deeply personal interview that allows them to walk Disney+ subscribers through their childhood and teenage years. Alongside these interviews, creative cinematic reenactments help bring major inflection points to life.

Bertie Gregory smiles in the center of the poster for Epic Adventures with Bertie Gregory. In the circular graphic, he is surrounded by images of himself scuba diving, operating a camera, rock climbing, etc. He is also surrounded by wildlife, including sea lions, penguins, lions, dolphins, bats, and more.

Epic Adventures with Bertie Gregory
The face of a new generation of aspirational adventurers and natural history filmmakers, 29-year-old National Geographic Explorer Bertie Gregory takes viewers on epic and nail-biting journeys that push into the most spectacular and secretive corners of our wild world. Armed with leading-edge film technology, the Disney+ Original series Epic Adventures with Bertie Gregory, from National Geographic, breaks the mold of the traditional natural history program by telling extraordinary, real-life animal stories and taking viewers with him for every beat of the action. For weeks at a time, the charismatic BAFTA Award-winning cinematographer immerses himself into the animals’ lives to capture the untold stories of iconic creatures living in some of the harshest environments on our planet. This season, Disney+ subscribers will see Gregory brave the icy worlds of Antarctica in search of the biggest gathering of whales ever filmed and coming face-to-face with specialist buffalo-hunting lions in Zambia. The awards ceremony is just one of the many spectacular events fans can enjoy during the three-day D23 Expo.

The 2022 Disney Legends Award honorees (listed alphabetically) are:

Anthony Anderson grew up in Los Angeles. D23 Members Embark on a Historic Journey Through Walt’s Hometown

By Peyton Liebler and Emma Zomerman

D23 Members had the opportunity to visit Marceline, Missouri, for a tour of Walt Disney’s historic hometown this spring. They were able to experience signature elements of his boyhood that inspired some of the most foundational parts of the Walt Disney Company such as his dedication to family and his love of magic.

100 D23 Members arrived in Kansas City, Missouri, on May 1, 2022, to check in for their overnight stay, then boarded a bus the next morning to head into Marceline. As Walt himself said, “I’m glad I’m a small-town boy, and I’m glad Marceline was my town.” As D23 Members ventured closer to this little town, those words couldn’t be truer.

Upon arrival, D23 Members enjoyed a special welcome presentation from town officials which detailed the history of the town, and how Walt Disney’s history intertwined with Marceline. After the presentation, D23 Members were treated to a delicious lunch at the Marceline Community Center.

After lunch, D23 Members visited E.P. Ripley Park, for the dedication of Midget Autopia. The attraction, which opened in 1957 at Disneyland Park, was designed only for kids to experience. However, this was not the intention Walt had when creating a park for the whole family, so, in 1966, the attraction closed at Disneyland and was donated to Marceline. During D23’s trip to Marceline, members were able to race along the winding paths following the dedication.

A guest sitting in an emerald green retro car with silver rim and white headlights with brown license plate on the front right of the car featuring Walt in big letters, Jul in the top left and Missouri above Walt. The guest is smiling and has short dark hair, a red and white striped tank top and a woven sun hat with red band and black Mickey ears on either side of the hat. The car is on the sidewalk with brick flooring on the left with brown beams reaching toward the ceiling. On the right side of the car are wood chips and green grass. The background features green trees and a blue sky.

Following the event, guests plotted their own adventures with an “on your own” scavenger hunt and a visit to the Walt Disney Hometown Museum with a shopping experience. It was amazing to see fans channel their inner Walt Disney as they explored and learned about his hometown.

Not only did guests get to tour the town, but they also had the opportunity to visit Walt’s childhood home and barn after their hometown experience. Adjacent to the barn, guests were transported to the Pollyanna Bazaar, which captured the true spirit of Pollyanna through themed décor and food. Guests participated in games, listened to live music, and enjoyed a peaceful dinner on the farm just as Walt would have wanted it.

Many guests sitting and standing outdoors. The circular tables have white table clothes with bright pink and green flowers surrounded by folding chairs with blue checkered covers. Lights and lanterns are hanging above the tables and guests in green, pink, red, and yellow. Behind the tables to the right is a large, rectangular white fabric banner with black text reading “Marceline The Glad You Were Here Town.” Several large green trees and a red barn can be seen in the back left of the photo.

As Walt reminds us, “Goodbye may seem forever. Farewell is like the end, but in my heart is the memory and there you will always be.” On behalf of the D23 team, we hope that the memories you made at this event stay in your heart as we know they will in ours.

As an added bonus, our friends at the Walt Disney Hometown Museum in Marceline are offering a 50% discount off admission for D23 Gold Members! Click here to find out more!
