She-Hulk: Attorney at Law Introduces the MCU’s Relatable Super Hero

By Andie Hagemann

The nine-episode comedy series centers around Jennifer—a 30-something attorney specializing in superhuman-oriented legal cases... who also happens to transform into a green 6-foot-7-inch superpowered hulk. With the help of her cousin Bruce Banner/Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and best friend and paralegal Nikki Ramos (Ginger Gonzaga), she learns how to embrace her newfound powers and boldness while navigating everyday life. The series, directed by Kat Coiro (Episodes 1-4, 8-9) and Anu Valia (Episodes 5-7), launches new episodes weekly on Thursdays.

Art imitated life as Maslany incorporated her own naivete about the Marvel Cinematic Universe into her portrayal of Jennifer/She-Hulk. “I wasn’t a big Marvel-head before this, so it was exciting to step into it and be totally fresh,” Maslany tells D23. “[Jennifer] is focusing on being a lawyer and trying not to be She-Hulk for so long; she doesn’t really know the world of Super Heroes and that’s a fun dynamic to play with.”

Actor Tatiana Maslany portrays Jennifer Walter/She-Hulk with CGI green skin and hair. She is walking while wearing a silver beaded ballgown.

Unlike Bruce Banner, Jennifer maintains consciousness when she transforms into She-Hulk. Jennifer isn’t tasked with years of learning how to be calm, cool, and collected like Bruce, who has adopted a Zen lifestyle post-Avengers: Endgame. Coiro, a longtime fan of She-Hulk, admires the character’s relatability in how she handles the mundane moments of everyday life as well as her new bigger, bolder presence in the world.

“She-Hulk is such a fascinating character,” says Coiro. “She embodies so many of the things that women struggle with. When [Jennifer] is She-Hulk, she takes up a lot of space in the room in a way that most women aren’t used to doing, and that can sometimes feel uncomfortable.”

Maslany adds, “[Jennifer] is thrown into this high-powered position that maybe she’s not willing [to take on], but it’s an incredible opportunity. She’s navigating the fact that being She-Hulk is what got her this great, big job, but she wants to be herself. It’s a fun dichotomy.”

(Left to Right) Actor Jameela Jamil portraying Titania sits at a wooden table and looks at a cell phone she is holding in her left hand. Jamil wears a teal blazer adorned with silver beads and sequins on each shoulder. A male actor sits at the table to her right with empty courtroom benches seen behind them.

As if a new job, identity, and superhuman clients weren’t enough to deal with, Jennifer is soon confronted with her first nemesis, Titania (Jameela Jamil)—a superpowered social media influencer who is determined to take down She-Hulk after the Super Hero lawyer humiliated her. “Titania is a villain but she’s very rooted in our modern culture; she’s larger than life and a public personality,” Coiro says.

Beyond the humor, Maslany and Coiro say She-Hulk: Attorney at Law challenges the perceptions of what a Super Hero can be.

“She’s really representative of exploring all the different sides of ourselves—from the plain to the powerful; from the befuddled to the confident,” says Coiro. This series—and Tatiana’s performance—is silly, fun, and entertaining. It’s ridiculous at times, but, at its core, it really is about embracing all the parts that make up a woman.”

How Lucasfilm’s Andor Reintroduces Its Rebel with a Cause

By Zach Johnson

You may know Cassian Andor’s fate, but you don’t know his past.

That will change when Lucasfilm’s highly anticipated series Andor launches Wednesday, September 21, with a three-episode premiere, exclusively on Disney+. Diego Luna reprises his role as Cassian Andor, who was introduced in the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, in a story set against a backdrop of political intrigue and rising rebellion. Created by showrunner Tony Gilroy (who wrote five of the 12 episodes), Andorexplores a new perspective from the Star Wars galaxy, in which Cassian will discover how to make a difference and, ultimately, become a rebel hero.

“Everything that made sense as you watched the film is going to be challenged,” Luna promises. “I know where [his arc] ends, so I can be creative about how to get there. I think it triggers a different part of your creativity when you start backwards.”

The idea of working backwards didn’t faze Gilroy, who says, “We’re all living in a prequel. We’re all going to die!” In shaping Cassian’s arc, he wanted the narrative journey to feel compelling and complete. To achieve that, the series reintroduces Cassian at an especially low point in his life, five years prior to the events depicted in Rogue One, at a time when the Empire was consolidating its power across the galaxy.

In a scene from Andor, Luthen Rael, played by Stellan Skarsgård, is riding a speeder bike. He is seated behind Cassian Andor, played by Diego Luna, who is steering the bike. The background is blurred and their hair is windblown, implying they are traveling at high speeds.

“There are touchpoints in Rogue One—there are snapshots for every character, little moments of truth, that go back to who they were,” Gilroy says. “Cassian had been fighting in the revolution since he was 6 years old, and at end of the film, he says, ‘My God, if we don’t go out and make this final effort, then everything I’ve done—all of the horrible things I’ve done for the Rebellion—will have been for naught. It’ll have been useless.’ So, we know there’s a very dark period, and we’ve seen his behavior all the way through that. There were tiny navigational points, so I started to build from those.”

In spite of its name, Andor isn’t just about Cassian’s journey. In fact, the live-action series will introduce several new characters, including Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård), Bix Caleen (Adria Arjona), Dedra Meero (Denise Gough), Syril Karn (Kyle Soller), Maarva Andor (Fiona Shaw), and Vel Sartha (Faye Marsay), and reintroduce characters such as Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly) and Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker). “I love that this story is about regular people,” Luna says. “It’s about you and me. It’s about us.” In fact, Luna adds, “It’s unfair to call the show Andor, because this is about communities.”

Marvel Studios Goes Big at the She-Hulk: Attorney at Law Premiere

By Zach Johnson

Marvel Studios rolled out the green-and-purple carpet at The El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood Monday to celebrate the world premiere of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, debuting Thursday, August 18, on Disney+. The event brought out many of the series’ stars, including Tatiana Maslany, Mark Ruffalo, Jameela Jamil, Ginger Gonzaga, Josh Segarra, and Renée Elise Goldsberry, among others, in addition to the creative teams.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law introduces Jennifer Walters, an attorney specializing in superhuman-oriented legal cases, to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Jennifer is a single, 30-something woman... who just so happens to be a green, 6-foot-7 superpowered hulk. “For us, it was so important that we made her feel like a real person,” head writer Jessica Gao told D23 at the premiere. “All of these characters that you see in Marvel movies have a lot on their plate because they’re usually saving the universe and the fate of humanity. You don’t really have a lot of time to spend regular life with them. What’s great about this show—and what’s great about television—is we have that time and space. We’re able to show this well-rounded portrait of a person who, in a very grounded way, deals with getting superpowers.”

Jon Bass, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Jameela Jamil, Ginger Gonzaga, Tatiana Maslany, Mark Ruffalo, Josh Segarra, Patty Guggenheim, and Griffin Matthews wrap their arms around each other and smile at the launch event for Marvel Studios’ She-Hulk Attorney at Law.

Helping to ground Jennifer are Nikki Ramos (Gonzaga), her best friend and paralegal, and Augustus “Pug” Pugliese (Segarra), a new friend and attorney. “Nikki is very rad, very free, and very reckless,” Gonzaga said. “She starts a lot of the fires that Jen won’t engage herself in.” As for Pug? “Pug is ride or die,” Segarra told D23. “Pug is all love. He loves hard. He was saved by Spider-Man, so he decided to dedicate himself to protecting Super Heroes—and here we are! I’m excited for folks to see how much he loves Jen Walters when she gets there. Come on, man! It’s the She-Hulk—in the flesh!”

Excluding Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk, Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky/Abomination, and Benedict Wong as Wong, the series is populated with characters never-before-seen onscreen, such as Eugene Patillio/Leap-Frog (Brandon Stanley). “Leap-Frog’s in the MCU! We’ve finally done it, guys! It’s happening!” Stanley said with a laugh. As for what makes Leap-Frog special, Stanton teased, “I can leap. I can get up there, baby!”

Then there’s Madisynn—“a mess of a human,” according to Patty Guggenheim. Unlike Leap-Frog, Guggenheim’s character cannot be traced back to Marvel Comics. “She’s an original,” Guggenheim shared. “She’s a party girl who stumbles into this world—quite literally.”

For some of the actors, who still can’t believe they’re now part of the MCU, Monday’s premiere helped it sink in. “Oh, my God! It’s wild! It’s the weirdest! Is this real? There’s a poster of me that’s giant!” Gonzaga said. “There’s so much art and imagination involved in the comics, films, and TV shows, so it’s a dream come true!”

Before you stream Marvel Studios’ She-Hulk: Attorney at Law on Disney+ later this week, D23 presents a smashing series of photos from the purple and green carpet:
