Good day to ye. On this eighth day of the month of November in 1973, the much-heralded animated feature Robin Hood was released, retelling the classic olde tale of thy well-intentioned outlaw. This film holds a special place in the heart of Huston Huddleston, whose parents were both involved in its production. “My mother, Nancy Adams, had been singing with Phil Harris, Harry James, and Frank Sinatra, Jr. at the Frontier Hotel in Vegas since 1971 and [Disney Legend] Woolie Reitherman came up to visit. Robin Hood was basically finished and they had a melody George Bruns had written with a woman singing the melody over the love scene between Robin and Marian. Woolie was unhappy with it and asked my father Floyd if he would write a lyric to it. Floyd wrote it over the weekend and was literally sitting on Woolie’s doorstep at Disney Monday morning. They first tried John Gary to sing the vocal, but thought it would be more effective with a girl’s voice, and Woolie asked Nancy to sing it. All were shocked when it received an Oscar® Nomination, even more shocked when they were up against two No. 1 hits, ‘Live and Let Die’ and ‘The Way We Were.'”
