Its wide expanse and cavernous depths make the Grand Canyon an extraordinary natural setting, one that has inspired artists around the world, including Walt Disney. All have tried to capture through words, drawings, and paintings its majestic splendor. The Walt Disney Company did it with film. In 1959, the Disney Studios released Grand Canyon with Sleeping Beauty. This 29 minute-long short, scored with “The Grand Canyon Suite” by composer Ferde Grofé, shows off the natural landmark’s dazzling colors, amazing wildlife and thrilling excursions. It took home the Oscar® in 1959 for Best Short/Live-Action Subjects and has since inspired the diorama simulation of the canyon on Disneyland’s Railroad route.
