The Horse in the Gray Flannel raced into theaters on this day in 1968, telling the story of a troubled ad exec (Dean Jones) who desperately needs to come up with a successful ad campaign to promote Aspercel, an indigestion remedy. Using a little horse sense, he gets his firm to purchase a horse, who will be named Aspercel, and plans to have his teenage daughter (Ellen Janov) ride the horse to victory in competitions so Aspercel, both horse and remedy, will get publicity while also paying for his daughter’s expensive equestrian hobby. To keep the film authentic, exciting portions of a Washington, D.C. International Horse Show were filmed for the suspenseful climax. Also on this day, the featurette Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day blew into theaters, accompanying The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit, but that’s a horse of a different color.
